I've seen this behavior in quite few installation I have done; and saying "install a DNS server/Edit sysctl.conf" should not be the answer to fix the problem, not everybody have the skills required to do that, and it should not be a requirement at all. I don't think this could be fixed for karmic at this point but it should be fixed for lucid, otherwise the "common" users (not experts) will get tired of using "software" that doesn't work (They can't browse the web the way they like). So far I just disable IPv6 in firefox after installing ( network.dns.disableIPv6 ), thats quite enough to make most users happy.
