It gets into Xorg and shows a loading screen with a brown background and a moving white line in the center. Then, the screen flashes six times, the line stops moving, and the computer freezes up. Ctrl-Alt-Fx no longer works, and the only way I can get it to respond is with Alt-SysRq-REISUB. I extracted the relevant logfiles by mounting the persistent storage file, and will attach them. [Bug 424571] Re: gxine skips, plays too fast, freezes
The same thing happens in xine. In Totem, sometimes the video gets behind the audio, so it pauses, then plays fast to catch up. No doubt my machine (an EEE box) is too slow to keep up, but in totem it's generally watchable and the degradation is fairly graceful. Gxine seems to react to dropped frames by actively speeding things up, making it worse. Rhythmbox often has similar problems when playing music, suddenly stopping and maybe picking up the thread 30 seconds later. I can't discern any particular pattern to when it happens, but when it does, all videos (and, with Rhythmbox, music) seem to be bad for a while. It doesn't seem to be due to load, I have a status monitor applet and it doesn't show anything in particular happening. (However, when audio or video is playing, the network usage goes to 100%, which I guess is a separate bug.) Ubuntu 9.04, gxine 0.5.903-4ubuntu1, xine-ui 0.99.5+cvs20070914-2.1~lenny2ubuntu1, libxine1 1.1.16.3-0. I didn't assign the bug to a package because the bug reporting page doesn't have an option to do so. If it had, I would have assigned it to gxine, because of the utter impossibility of navigating my way through the maze of audio/video libraries, frameworks, front-ends, codecs and servers with which Ubuntu is encrusted. The problem could be anywhere and no diagnostic information bubbles up into user-space. I have 11 packages installed with "xine" in the name alone. Your wondering if I can reproduce the bug under Karmic Koala 9.10? I haven't upgraded to 9.10 yet and are probably waiting for 2009 - 10 for that. You want me to report on the conditions when the crash "tends to occur". As I mentioned in first post that was the first time this occured and I haven't been abel to reproduce the crash with the same software running - if you from earlier logs can give me input on which applications should be running (it's likely I had applications running in backround which I didn't think off). I would be happy to help you with a backtracing - if you thinkg it possible. I have ofcourse started and restarted my laptop a "few" times since the 27th of august. [Bug 407428] Re: sshd zombie processes and strange behavior after karmic upgrade
The attached patch fixes the problem for me. From the patch comments: External programs triggered by events (via RUN=) will inherit udev's signal mask, which is set to block all but SIGALRM. For most utilities, this is OK, but if we start daemons from RUN=, we run into trouble (especially as SIGCHLD is blocked). This change saves the original sigmask when udev starts, and restores it just before we exec() the external command. Signed-off-by: Jeremy Kerr I'm not a udev hacker, so not sure if this is the proper fix. I've sent it to linux-hotplug for comment. ** Attachment added: "Patch to restore signal mask before execing external processes" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/31357893/0001-Restore-signal-mask-before-executing-event-RUN-comma.patch -- sshd zombie processes and strange behavior after karmic upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/407428 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 326340] Re: Inkscape leaves artifacts on the screen
This bug report is supposed to be about one issue only: the display artefacts left on screen when using the win32 version. Reading through the report, I don't think anyone has experienced this on Ubuntu, so I'm marking this as invalid. Other small screen display issues should be reported separately. ** Changed in: inkscape (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- Inkscape leaves artifacts on the screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/326340 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 369587] Re: Totem (Ubuntu 9.04 i386) has poor audio playback while playing video.
I still get a similar issue but this time it's a strange popping sound with audio, same hardware. It's absent while using the same laptop without harddrive encryption (using the default options from the Ubuntu alternative install). I've noticed that every 7 seconds or so cpu useage jumps about 35% (while idle & while running the videos that cause the earlier problems so I'm assuming that it's the filesystem encryption/decryption that has an impact on audio quality in this case as the CPU is busy with filesystem/disk rather than audio?). However, these same files that once caused the same laptop a few months ago to peg 100% cpu useage consistently are now down to only 35% to 40% total CPU useage (with the +35% spikes every 7 or so seconds as when idle) and video playback is stable in a window and full screen at 1280x960 resolution. These are avi files encoded in "RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 640x480, 23.98 fps, video: xvid, audio mpeg-1 layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)". If you need i can upload a file for you to play with to some repository. However, they are about 140MB each which means i can't e'mail them. Likewise, the odd thing is when I use a hi-def avi that I encoded myself from the local cable company (using MythTV and converted to avi) with a native resolution of 1280x720 xvid, 30fps, and mp3 audio, i don't hear any pops. I'm wondering if now it's nothing but a poor encoding to the files totem is having issues with. Let me know if you need the files themselves, i'd be happy to provide. I'm reluctant to cut or reencode the actual files for smaller size in case any artifacts that would differences in playback would appear and invalidate any tests. --- On Fri, 9/4/09, Sebastien Bacher wrote: From: Sebastien Bacher Subject: [Bug 369587] Re: Totem (Ubuntu 9.04 i386) has poor audio playback while playing video. [Bug 424743] [NEW] If ubuntu one Icon is set to be invisible, there is no way to get it back
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client With one of the recent releases of Ubuntu One, the option was created to make the icon invisible on panel. That worked fine, but it is not possible to get it back somehow to make it visible again. As a result, as settings requires to rightclick on the icon in panel, setting cannot be changed anymore. The activity notification (the black panel) works fine and the synchronisation seems to be ok as well. To fix it, it should be possible to open it from >applications>internet>ubuntu one... even if the icon is set to be invisible. Can that be fixed?
