[Bug 130998] Re: ZyDAS 802.11b WiFi freezes kernel 2.6.22-9 in Gutsy Tribe 3

2008-02-01 Thread Mario Capurso
I have a different Zydas usb adapter (ORIGO) that failed in a different
way:

If you connect a ZyDAS 802.11b WiFi usb, it is seen in the usb list

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsusb

Bus 002 Device 001: ID :

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0ace:1201 ZyDAS 802.11b WiFi

the module is loaded

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsmod

zd1201 23812 0

zd1201 23812 0

...

usbcore 138632 3 zd1201,uhci_hcd

...

but dmesg gives the following messages:

[11781.58] usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and
address 3

[11796.692000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110

I solved in this way

I went to

http://sourceforge.net/projects/linux-lc100020/

and I got the firmware as a tar.gz

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/lin...5&big_mirror=0

Next I gunzipped zd1201.fw and I copied in
/lib/firmware/2.6.22-14-generic/ working as a root.

cp zd1201.fw /lib/firmware/2.6.22-14-generic/

Finally I extracted and reattached the usb wifi adapter.

and dmesg gives :

[18589.16] usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and
address 7

[18632.704000] usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and

[18633.448000] usb 1-1: wlan0: ZD1201 USB Wireless interface

[18635.54] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan0: link becomes ready

And now it becomes visible in the network manager

[Bug 187961] [NEW] package bzip2-doc failed to install: confusing INFO-DIR-ENTRY in file

2008-02-01 Thread John Schofield
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bzip2-doc

Setting up bzip2-doc (1.0.4-2ubuntu1) ...
 install-info(/usr/share/info/bzip2.info): warning, ignoring confusing
INFO-DIR-ENTRY in file.

No `START-INFO-DIR-ENTRY' and no `This file documents'.
install-info(/usr/share/info/bzip2.info): unable to determine description for
`dir' entry - giving up

This is from either an "aptitude dist-upgrade" from gutsy --> hardy, (I
removed the package to make the upgrade possible) or from doing the
installation now from an updated hardy box with "aptitude install
bzip2-doc".

I will attach my sources.list file and crash log.

[Bug 187961] Re: package bzip2-doc failed to install: confusing INFO-DIR-ENTRY in file

2008-02-01 Thread John Schofield
I believe this is not related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bzip2/+bug/187946 , despite
the comment posted there -- this appears to be two different root
causes.

However, upon looking at the attached log file, it looks like case
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bzip2/+bug/184831 DOES have
the same root cause as this case, so this case should probably be
resolved as a dupe of that one.

Hmm. For me this patch doesn't do anything at all.

I compiled and installed it, logged out and logged in again and tried it

"Clean Up by Name".

[Bug 187967] [NEW] [regression][M6 LY] blue box instead of video output

2008-02-01 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

This regression bug had the same workaround for me as bug 148408 so the
root cause might be the same which would make this a dupe. Until that
is clear, I believe it makes sense to have a separate bug report.

The latest version of xserver-xorg-video-ati in gutsy has a number of
problems that were not present in the latest feisty version.

This one is about video output being a blue box instead of the moving
images for mplayer, totem, xine and all players I tested. The sound
played fine. Downgrading to feisty xserver-xorg-video-ati from feisty
on an otherwise gutsy machine.

[Bug 187971] [NEW] Samba randomly doesn't connect to local server

2008-02-01 Thread Václav Čermák
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 for the office work. All our data are stored on local
server (also in the office). I had problem connecting to the server. Or
actually I could connect but one day I could open files and edit and other I
couldn't. Recently I've discovered that I have to unplug my laptop from the
network and connect it during or after login. Then it works just fine.
Here is my version of Samba:
ii samba 3.0.26a-1ubuntu2.3 a LanManager-like file and printer server
for Unix
I'm no geek so I just try to describe the problem in non-tech words.

[Bug 186694] Re: update-manager-core dapper backport

2008-02-01 Thread Mario Limonciello
In it's current form, this package will not build on dapper. It depends
upon python-central which was introduced in edgy. This can be resolved
by managing the package with python-support instead. Attached is a
patch to switch the uploaded update-manager-core to python-support.

Hi Leann, I'm afraid there could be a regression in this new kernel
that causes to the pc to hang with rt61pci, unfortunately I can't seem
to be able find any information on the logs, the only thing I get is a
frozen system and a blinking capslock led

[Bug 187855] Re: keyboards events generated wrongly create issues

2008-02-01 Thread Sarah Hobbs
Fujitsu and I are getting this as well, on an EN_US keyboard (i
believe).

This has been happening for months, so it could well have been from that
update.

I've used the "setxkbmap -rules xorg -layout us" before, and it didn't
fix the problem. I'm not running KVM or another VM.

While preparing the updated app-install-data-commercial package I did a

I believe I had a similar problem (not sure if is really the same, I

What I have currently done is to revert back to the latest version of
xserver-xorg-video-ati from feisty which still worked well for me and
did not have a number of other serious problems.

maybe something shows up in ~/.xsession-errors if it appears again.

[Bug 187974] [NEW] EULA hard to read in gnome frontend

The debconf EULA is hard to read with the current template file under
the gnome debconf frontend (that is the default used when add/remove
installs a package).

I attach a screenshot. vmware-server is a good example how this can be
worked around.

[Bug 33673] Re: Not obvious when logout is stalled by window on another virtual desktop

2008-02-01 Thread brad
I'd like to confirm this bug.
If gedit is running, but is underneath another running application, (in my
particular case it was Evolution), and logout is initiated, (shut down), and
the gedit document hasn't been saved, the dialog box, to save or discard, opens
underneath the currently running application, causing the system-shutdown to
stall, with no way to get at the dialog box, (the curser moves, but
(close)application wont respond. Maybe something like an "always on top" could
be added to gedit's dialog pop-ups to make sure they can jump to the uppermost
window?

My system is a Pentium4, Ubuntu 7.0.4 (all current updates). No
modifications.

[Bug 187982] [NEW] update-manager fails to bring up the password prompt for root privileges

2008-02-01 Thread Matthias Andersson
Public bug reported:

I've noticed that around a third of the times there's an update
available update-manager informs about it, when I click on the icon in
the tray it opens up the program which fetches the list of available
updates but when I press "install updates" the update-manager fails to
bring up the password prompt and the only way to get rid of the instance
is by going through the terminal, ps-ef |grep update manager and kill
the pid. So far it has always worked on the second try.

If the prompt for the password manages to launch as it should then the
rest of the installation works just fine.

Public bug reported:

Looking for a method to start RB playing, and since there is not a
launch option that lets you do so, I tried using the command "rhythmbox

Ralf claimed that users expect their smb.conf to say security=share. I
contested that based on the fact that the vast majority of users don't
care, don't know that they even have an smb.conf, and *shouldn't*.

My point exactly. There are several solutions, so why keep pushing the
wrong one?

The point wasn't whether the user had to change his smb.conf. The point
was that that the particular type of user in question has no opinion on
what string of characters are in his smb.conf. He cares about sharing
files, not the technical mechanics of it.

> I do appreciate that you are trying to combine usability and security,

I'm having difficulty conveying the extent to which that sort of
statement irritates me... We are not ignoring the fact that Ubuntu
machines are used in mixed environments.

> If an Ubuntu user, at the moment, shares a folder, a windows user

It seems to be a common misconception on this thread, that the only way
to make files available via samba to unauthenticated users is to tell
samba to use security=share. This is simply not so. If you want
nautilus-share to present the guest_ok setting in its ui, please file a
bug against nautilus-share. Quit suggesting that we turn Samba into a
gaping security hole by default.

Oh, almost forgot, the wireless should turn itself on by default, and

seemed to be something in sysfs not working, maybe its cause i use

the icon and uncheck 'Enable wireless'.

Your sleep key is working fine, as the laptop enters sleep mode. If it
doesnt come back up, it's probably a kernel or driver problem. I had the
same issue until Gutsy (laptop not coming out of sleep), but now it
works fine. I dont know how to fix it though, i just waited for the

netcat (1.10-35) unstable; urgency=low

  * Netcat has been split into netcat-traditional (built by this package),
and netcat-openbsd (a rewritten implementation). The command and man
page will be managed by the alternatives system. This package generates
a transitional "netcat" package that will depend on netcat-traditional.

netcat (1.10-34) unstable; urgency=low

  * Rename TOS option from -x to -T. This is painful, but it was never a
standard option, and will be needed for command-line compatibility with
other implementations of netcat. Forcing them to rename -x is not
viable.
  * Don't return EXIT_FAILURE from -h, and include debian revision number
in its output. (Closes: #457171)
  * Include portability fix for Darwin. (Closes: #457172)
  * Don't give select more nfds than necessary. (Closes: #457173)
  * Reformat all the patch headers.
  * Include note about the use of http_proxy in examples/webproxy. (Closes:
#308687)
  * Edit EXAMPLES pointer in man page, and add an examples section to
README.Debian. (Closes: #450676)

need to in order for the bug to leave.

At what point has anyone suggested asking an Ubuntu user what settings
he would like to set in her SMB.conf? The setting of security=share is
merely one of a few solutions in making windows file sharing on Ubuntu
simpler. If enabled by default, the user would not have to alter
smb.conf at all.

I do appreciate that you are trying to combine usability and security,
but simply ignoring the fact that many users are using Ubuntu machines
in a mixed network with Windows ones is surely not a good idea. If an
Ubuntu user, at the moment, shares a folder, a windows user CANNOT
access the folder without access to the Ubuntu users ID, or creating his
own. Secure or not, this is not usable.

Please sync netcat-openbsd (universe) from Debian unstable (main).
Changelog since current hardy version 0:

netcat-openbsd (1.89-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Replace references to "netcat-base" with "netcat-traditional" (future
name of the old netcat package).

netcat-openbsd (1.89-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Initial release. (Closes: #145798)
  * Includes support for:
- IPv6 (Closes: #461317)
- Unix domain sockets (Closes: #348564)
- SOCKS (Closes: #142898)
  * Conflict with netcat versions older than netcat-traditional, so that we
can use alternatives.
  * Port some features over from netcat-traditional:
- Exit successfully when printing help text (-h), and include the Debian
  revision.
- Add the -q (quit on standard input EOF) flag.
- Add support for specifying ports by name (/etc/services). Unlike the
old hack for this, nc will first try to find a named service, then fall
back to numeric parsing, so no escaping is needed.

[Bug 124736] Re: [gutsy] some asus hotkeys no longer work

2008-02-01 Thread Mephisto
Xev doesnt necessarily pick up keypresses from the acpi keys. it aren't
keys but acpi events after all, which are then converted to keypresses
by the acpi event system. Nevertheless, the brightness keys should work
fine without it, since they are managed in hardware (they work outside
the OS too) and the keypresses are just to let your desktop know that
you've been changing it, so it can give feedback to you about the
status. You could see if the key does anything at all by running 'sudo
acpi_listen' and see if it gives output for your key. It should give the
following output:

hotkey ATKD 002e 0003
hotkey ATKD 002d 0002
hotkey ATKD 002c 0001
hotkey ATKD 002b 0001
hotkey ATKD 001c 0001
hotkey ATKD 001d 0001
hotkey ATKD 001e 0002
hotkey ATKD 001f 0008

This was from turning the brightness on my A6K down by 4 (Fn+F5), and up
by 4 (Fn+F6) (ignore the 4th value, its just a number that goes up when
you generate the same event again). If your output is different, post it
here and i can probably give you instructions to fix it. If your Fn+F6
does not generate events, it may be physically broken.

Also, as a temporary workaround, you can try to adjust the brightness with:
sudo echo "X" > /proc/acpi/asus/brn
where X is a number between 0 (dark) and 15 (bright).
