[Bug 99050] Dell 170Ls do not show a "thermometer bar" screen during start-up or shut-down procedure

2007-03-30 Thread Simón A . Ruiz
Public bug reported:

When booting up or shutting down Ubuntu 6.10 on our 120+ Dell 170L
workstations, on a Live CD or after installation, the standard
"thermometer bar" screen does not appear, only a blinking cursor in the
top-lefthand corner.

Everything works otherwise; it still transitions to the standard login
screen when it's done booting up and powers off when it's done shutting
down, it just doesn't show that it's doing anything.

Ubuntu 5.10 did not have this problem, nor do our Dell210L workstations
or Dell Inspiron 1300 laptops running Ubuntu 6.10.

[Bug 99049] kubuntu feisty beta - installer chrashs on portition table

2007-03-30 Thread piovisqui
Public bug reported:

Maybe it's the same bug, I do not know:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/43125

I downloaded Kubuntu 7.04 beta, burned and booted. I was installing it. The
installer asked about use the whole HD to install (automatic) or just a
partition(manual). I chose manual and the partition table appeared. I marked
/dev/sda3 for formatting. When I tried to edit it (intended to format from
reiserfs to ext3) the installer chrashes and this error appears:
__

Traceback(most recent call last):
file: /usr/lib/ubuquity/frontend/kde-ui.py
line 1942, in
on_partition_list_edit_activate
index=selected[0]
IndexError: list index out of range
__

I think the error says the same as me.

However I installed it sucessful. How? I edited the partition and after
marked the checkbox of "Format?", then clicked next. I'm using Kubuntu
now to post the bug :)

There is something else that I'm not sure if it's a bug. I connected to
the internet and apt-get works. Konversation (IRC) too. But konqueror
does not browse any site. I used apt-get to install Firefox and Mozilla
worked!

[Bug 99056] [feisty] Keyboard Stop button only pauses rhythmbox

2007-03-30 Thread Damiano Dallatana
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I just installed Feisty beta 1 over Edgy (erased edgy root partition, and left
edgy /home untouched).
Using Rhythmbox, I noticed that when I press the "stop" key on my keyboard,
rhythmbox pauses.
I reconfigured the keyboard shortcuts, making sure the stop key was set for
stopping the music, but nothing changed (restarted xorg to make sure the
changes were applied).
This is a regression, as using Rhythmbox on Edgy Eft the stop button worked
properly.

Using rhytmbox 0.9.8 on feisty (completely updated) on it-IT
environment.

[Bug 99053] Problems installing 7.04 beta on Acer Aspire 3023 WLMi

2007-03-30 Thread Michael Doube
Public bug reported:

Feedback on Ubuntu 7.04 beta installation on an Acer Aspire 3023 WLMi
notebook

the dmesg and lspci outputs are from the desktop live CD

Desktop:

Goodness:
Hardware is mostly supported, including display acceleration.

Problems:

Checking CD for defects - a result of 'checksum failures = 0' will not be
comprehensible to a new user, consider Plain English - e.g. CDROM OK, CD
Passed, etc.
Wireless doesn't go (presumably a firmware issue)
Keyboard not detected properly (UK not US layout)
Display is 800x 600 in top left corner, nice image but repeated on bottom 200
pixels and rest of screen (right hand 480 pixels, top to bottom) black Took a
screenshot but it doesn't show the error. Suggested fix: prevent repeated
display (2 menus, cursors etc. are confusing!), or better, make the default
resolution for the Aspire 3020 / 5020 1280x800.
Very disturbing horizontal flickering noise on desktop logout
Install screen is bigger than viewable area - can't see forward and back
buttons - unwilling to proceed at this point (especially as I want to preserve
my home and WinXP directories and not automatically partition)!

install in safe graphics mode: fails while loading X, then hangs while
attempting to load bcm43xx_mirocode5.fw

Result: Aborted installation attempt.

Server:

Goodness:
Apart from being VGA and a bit crufty to look at:
Partitioning works
Familiar options
LAMP install works (main reason I install Ubuntu server).

Badness
Setup hangs on 'Configuring apt': Scanning the mirror... screen (Ctrl-Alt-Del
reboot) is this because I am behind a port-blocking firewall? Or possibly
because my network cable might have been a bit flaky... solution: don't
configure network during installation!
vi appears not to understand my Insert key, despite setting up the gb keyboard
so editing /etc/network/interfaces was impossible. pico works.
can't access apt servers:
Err http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com feisty/main Translation-en_GB
   connection failed
ping and wget www.google.com works
Bit of a pain, because I want to put a desktop on my server installation!

Gave up at this point (other things to get on with)

Hope you find the feedback useful

Mike

[Bug 99051] Kubuntu Beryl makes screen unusable and white, need to kill X

2007-03-30 Thread lefty.crupps
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: beryl

When I install Beryl according to Mark Shuttleworth's blog posting, I
get menu entries for Beryl Settings Manager in KMenu>System, and Emerald
Theme Manager in KMenu>Settings (shouldn't these be together?) but
neither actually run Beryl. I had to separately install beryl-manager
(this should have been pulled in too, since the Settings Manager is
useless if there is nothing to use those settings).

Anyway, once I got that part done I ran (in Yakuake) beryl-manager and
all my window manager borders etc disappeared, but nothing replaced them
until I ended up with a blank white screen. I had to kill X to get out
of this mode.

[Bug 99054] ndiswrapper and bcm4311 in feisty

2007-03-30 Thread Ülo Parri
Public bug reported:

I have hp pavilion dv2007ea laptop. Wireless worked well before, but now i
can't connect anymore.
I have had same problem with edgy and gentoo.
When i started using feisty all was well no problems, but now all seems to be
fine, but no wireless connection can be made.
bcm43xx module gives really slow connection, so it's not an alternative.
Could be kernel or ndiswrapper problem.

Updates also brought suspend and sound bug. So to me feisty herd 5 was good and
it's gone downhill since.

Have tried both 64 and 32 bit versions.

[Bug 82089] Re: gnome-terminal seg faults while upgrading to edgy

2007-03-30 Thread Glyphobet
I did not attempt to provide a backtrace since that would require
downgrading to Ubuntu 6.06 (which would probably require a reinstall and
possibly reformatting my disk), building debugging packages for gnome-
terminal 6.06, and then re-running the upgrade process. That would take
all day, or maybe multiple days, and I don't have that kind of free time
to have one of my two primary machines out of commission.

If you read the bug report that I submitted to Gnome, and linked from
this bug report, you will see that I gave them on Jan 16th exactly the
same explanation for why I wasn't going to be able to obtain a
backtrace.

In this context, Sebastian Bacher's request on Jan 29th for me to obtain
a backtrace seemed so ridiculous to me that I honestly thought it was
generated by a robot, and nobody had actually read the details of my bug
report. So I ignored it, waiting for a real person.

[Bug 99054] Re: ndiswrapper and bcm4311 in feisty

2007-03-30 Thread Gert Kulyk
Did you try to blacklist bcm43xx before trying to set-up ndiswrapper? If
not, ndiswrapper will fail. In general I would recommend at least trying
bcm43xx again, ndiswrapper caused a lot of troubles (at least for me).

Since kernel 2.6.20 the bcm43xx module is much more stable than it was
in earlier releases. OK, at the moment still not a lot more than
11Mbit/s, but at least you'll get a stable connection.

actually, suspend/resume has worked the last few times, maybe my problem

so is there any hope hope that adept will behave same way as synaptics in the

what happens then adept is launched with gksudo instead?

Simo Sorce send me this link on the italian samba ml and I simply adapted the
patch, I think this is 3.0.23.x material
IMHO is better for ubuntu to update samba dapper version to 3.0.24 + vista
patches, but this is a sysadmin dream ;-)

[Bug 99061] There should be a space between the user entered status message and the one from kopete's "now listening" plugin

When you activate kopete's "Now listening" plugin and check it to add

corrupted during installation, or if something else is going on.

[Bug 99065] feature request: reviving ssh-agent

2007-03-30 Thread mukesh agrawal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openssh-client

ssh-agent sometimes dies on me. this leaves the problem that any
existing clients of that agent, as well as any processes that were
forked prior to the death of the agent, will be unable to reach the
agent. this is quite a nuisance, since it makes starting ssh-agent from
pam (using libpam-ssh) less useful.

i can't just resolve this by starting a new ssh-agent, because it will
have a different authentication socket than what the prior processes
expect. (those processes locate the ssh-agent via the SSH_AUTH_SOCK
environment variable.)

it would be nice to have an option to ssh-agent to connect to the same
socket as the previous agent. fwiw, for now, i'm using this script to
emualte the behavior i'd like:

#!/bin/sh

set -o errexit

if [[ -z $SSH_AUTH_SOCK ]]; then
>&2 echo "can't revive agent: SSH_AUTH_SOCK not set"
exit 1
fi

SSH_AUTH_DIR=$(dirname $SSH_AUTH_SOCK)
if [ ! -d $SSH_AUTH_DIR ]; then mkdir $SSH_AUTH_DIR; fi

[Bug 94095] Re: Ethernet interface not configured at boot time

2007-03-30 Thread Robert Clark
I do not see this problem if fsck runs at boot time. This leads me to
believe that this is a timing problem at boot time. I'm aware that
changes were made to improve boot times in feisty. Since I never saw
this problem in edgy, suspect the boot optimization(s) in feisty is
causing the problem.

I think the automatic fsck after 30 boots, gives the ethernet setup
enough time to complete before other network steps are done.

Others feisty users may not see this, because they are running on
newer/faster hardware.

[Bug 99070] shares-admin won't share nsf AND smb

2007-03-30 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

This is actually a complicated set of bugs

1. right-click on a folder and select "Share Folder" from the popup menu.
observe that only either SMB or NFS can be selected at a time.
If you select SMB and fill in the details and then select NFS and fill in the
details and finish, then the SMB details are lost.

2. sudo shares-admin
can be used to set up SMB and NFS together, but then when the share is edited
via right-click "Share Folder" one of them goes away again.

3.There is also a bug using sudo shares-admin
a. run shares-admin as root
b. click on +ADD
c. click on the PATH listbox an select "other"
d. type: /home
and press ENTER
e. see that HOME now appears in the drop-down list box
f. click on OK.
g. see that /home as NOT been shared, but whatever was the initial path in the
path-choosing dialog.

If I use click-browsing to navigate to a folder then this is selected OK
AND saved OK.

In doing this test I also got:

Is "its totally broken on this arch" sufficient reason to add it to one

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kopete

[Bug 98892] Re: Packaging error

2007-03-30 Thread Cesare Tirabassi
Many thanks for reporting this bug.
I have corrected the "bashism" in patch 10_build.patch:

Was:

$(INSTALL) -d $(DESTDIR)/{etc,bin,usr/{share/man/man{1,5}}}

Is:

$(INSTALL) -d $(DESTDIR)/etc
$(INSTALL) -d $(DESTDIR)/bin
$(INSTALL) -d $(DESTDIR)/usr/share/man/man1
$(INSTALL) -d $(DESTDIR)/usr/share/man/man5

Patch to package is attached for the universe sponsor to upload, if acceptable.
Any criticism is more than welcome.

Just discovered Bug #83544 on record that might be related to my Toshiba
problem.
Thought I'd point it out since I discovered it while doing a "google"
