My earlier patch (in this thread), replaces the contents of validate_nice_value() function with a single line: test "$1" -ge -20 -a "$1" -le 19 2> /dev/null The patch I submitted was against the broken version (7.2.0ubuntu4 with "$? -ne 1"), but the same idea works with the not-so-broken one. If I want it back, I have to delete the f-spot-directory in ~/.gnome2 and re-import the photo's. Then I can make it work until...see above. This is very frustrating. So I don't use it anymore. I'm using the "ati" driver without any additional option, and I have a mobility 9700, in feisty. And again glxgears is using more than 60% of my cpu. [Bug 92171] Sound incredibly quiet, alsamixer broken after kernel upgrade
Public bug reported: I'm currently running Feisty on a Toshiba Satellite A100, which uses the snd-hda-intel ALSA driver. After upgrading from 2.6.20-8-generic to 2.6.20-9-generic, the sound is an order of magnitude quieter; turning both the hardware and software volume controls up to maximum gives a barely-audible whisper. When viewing alsamixer, several sliders are missing or inactive, including the "master" slider (which merely has an on/mute switch instead of an adjustable sound level). >From what I can see, the 2.6.20-10 upgrade still contains the broken driver. Actually there is no reason why this bug should be a duplicate of 80287. Symptom are quite different: in one case it fails to launch, on the other case it launch but does not start well. Ok, This was because I updated the kernel but not the restricted modules (they weren't available at the time...) After rebooting into the old kernel and re-updating, the new restricted modules were installed and my wireless now works fine again... It seems from the forums that other people were also experiencing the same problem - perhaps there should be a warning if you update the kernel but not the restricted modules (if you have them installed)?
