[Bug 72800] Random hardlocks experienced in Edgy
Public bug reported: Myself and several other users have been experiencing hard locks in Edgy (i.e. the system becoming completely unresponsive to any mouse or keyboard input - including Ctrl+Alt+Delete and Ctrl+Alt+Backspace). People's precise symptoms differ somewhat, and are documented in this forum thread on the Ubuntu forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=296031. In my particular case the symptoms are different each time - the hard lock has so far happened: - while doing nothing in particular and hovering the cursor over the icons in the top-right of the screen. - during a Skype call. - while using Azureus. I don't have anything particularly out-of-the ordinary on this machine, so it's pretty much an up-to-date Edgy install, plus a few fairly standard programs (e.g.. Sun Java, Azureus, Skype, video codecs, ...). The hardware is a laptop (Acer 1357LMi) with Athlon XP-M 3000+ CPU and ATI Radeon Mobility 9200 graphics. I'm afraid I can't be particularly helpful in terms of a reproduction scenario (as I say, the problem seems to be somewhat random - though many others are hitting it). I'm happy to reproduce this myself and produce any useful information if someone can tell me what to gather here. The frequency of this bug seems to be that it now mostly happens within an hour of booting - enough to make the OS pretty much unusable for everyday use so I'm back on Windows. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed ** Description changed: - Myself and several other users have been experiencing hardlocks in Edgy + Myself and several other users have been experiencing hard locks in Edgy (i.e. the system becoming completely unresponsive to any mouse or keyboard input - including Ctrl+Alt+Delete and Ctrl+Alt+Backspace). [Bug 72651] Re: Toshiba Satellite laptop believes fully charged battery is critically low -- forces shutdown
Sure! 1) Sorry, couldn't find anything relevant here. Even did a few keyword searches. Then again, my model isn't listed so perhaps that's why. 2) BIOS is current. 3) Installed closest DSDT but no change. Once again, there is no specific DSDT for my model (Toshiba Satellite 1130-S155) so I used the generic Satellite one. Please let me know if I can assist in getting better info on this model out there. I'm afraid I don't know nearly enough to create an updated DSDT or anything myself, but I'll be happy to provide any info on my system and/or test patches. [Bug 43745] Re: Ubuntu corrupts real time clock on some dell laptops
It is with great sadness that I report Kubuntu 6.10 Edgy corrupts the bios on my old (5 years) Inspiron 8000 Pentium 3 1GHZ. So it appears that this problem is not limited to newer hardware. Installed Kubuntu 6.10 Edgy, rebooted 5 times or so. And when booting up the Bios message appeared stating that the date/time had been lost and did I want to F1 Set the date/time now or F2 ignore this error. Luckily this BIOS has more user friendly options than my Inspiron 6400 which simply displays the infuriating "time of date clock stopped" message and then fails to boot or do anything. This is very serious guys, what action is being done to investigate this problem? Nearly 6 months and no resolution. [Bug 72811] wrong modules loaded?
Public bug reported: Hi Ben, with the lastest 2.6.19 I am having a bunch of issues with my storage controllers. The 2 hd (hda/hdb) connected to 00:0f.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT823x/A/C PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06) can't do DMA anymore. It looks like they are owned by ata_generic or something? The 2 CD/DVD (hdc/hdd) suffer of the same issue (connected to the same controller). Note in the attached dmesg that they are discovered twice, first with normal/real name and later by a more generic one. The 4 hd (hd* in .17 and sd[a-d] in .19) to the 00:0c.0 Mass storage controller: Promise Technology, Inc. 20269 (rev 02) have changed name. This isn't really an issue but we lose control over DMA/32 bit io. The other storage controllers have no disks connected at the moment. The Fiber Channel is connected to a powered off SAN so there are no disks. As a side note, hdc and hdd do not appear in /proc/partitions anylonger. I am not sure if that's wanted behaviour. [Bug 34247] Re: Trash always empty.
I have instrumented gnome_vfs_volume_handles_trash(...) in libgnomevfs /gnome-vfs-volume.c. I have observed that gnome-vfs identifies the type of the root filesystem as "rootfs". There is no entry for such a filesystem in gnome-vfs-filesystem-type.c, so it thinks that the root filesytem, on which my home directory exists, does not handle trash. See comment 16 of this thread for another explanation of this. Could someone explain to me what "rootfs" is any why my root filesystem is not registered as ext3? It was my assumption that the _GnomeVFSVolumePrivate->filesystem_type parameter was supposed to show "ext3" as my file system type. Absent any insights from you, I will now instrument the code that makes the GnomeVFSVolume structs to find out why my root filesystem is getting mis-read. Right now I am 99% sure that this is a problem with gnome-vfs not reporting filesystem types correctly. Nautilus seems to be behaving properly given the information gnome-vfs provides. This problem also seems to be coming back to comment 16 of this thread. However, I disagree about adding a new filesystem type in the table. I want to know why it isn't reporting the correct type to start. -- Trash always empty. https://launchpad.net/bugs/34247 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 38140] Re: dhclient3 keeps running after ifdown
I'm also adding this comment because bug 49801 has been marked as a duplicate of this one. I'm not sure they are the same: the problem, dhclient not killed, is the same, but the conditions are different. I installed Edgy on a new machine late yesterday, changed eth0 from dhcp to static in /etc/network/interfaces, ran ifdown eth0 && ifup eth0 and verified that eth0 had come back up with the correct static address. All was well went I went home a few hours later but when I came back this morning discovered that the address assigned to eth0 had changed because the dhcp client was still running. /var/run/dhclient.eth0.pid was not empty; it contained the pid of the rogue dhclient process. I'll second tho's suggestion: could it be caused by ifdown assuming that the relevant part of /etc/network/interfaces hasn't changed since the network was brought up? -- dhclient3 keeps running after ifdown https://launchpad.net/bugs/38140 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
