[Bug 72800] Random hardlocks experienced in Edgy

2006-11-21 Thread The Belgain
Public bug reported:

Myself and several other users have been experiencing hard locks in Edgy
(i.e. the system becoming completely unresponsive to any mouse or
keyboard input - including Ctrl+Alt+Delete and Ctrl+Alt+Backspace).
People's precise symptoms differ somewhat, and are documented in this
forum thread on the Ubuntu forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=296031.

In my particular case the symptoms are different each time - the hard lock has
so far happened:
- while doing nothing in particular and hovering the cursor over the icons in
the top-right of the screen.
- during a Skype call.
- while using Azureus.

I don't have anything particularly out-of-the ordinary on this machine,
so it's pretty much an up-to-date Edgy install, plus a few fairly
standard programs (e.g.. Sun Java, Azureus, Skype, video codecs, ...).
The hardware is a laptop (Acer 1357LMi) with Athlon XP-M 3000+ CPU and
ATI Radeon Mobility 9200 graphics.

I'm afraid I can't be particularly helpful in terms of a reproduction
scenario (as I say, the problem seems to be somewhat random - though
many others are hitting it). I'm happy to reproduce this myself and
produce any useful information if someone can tell me what to gather
here. The frequency of this bug seems to be that it now mostly happens
within an hour of booting - enough to make the OS pretty much unusable
for everyday use so I'm back on Windows.

I noticed a few days later that the date moved but everytime i changed the date
it reverts back to what it is, that is
April 7, 1976 plus number of days after i installed Dapper

[Bug 72651] Re: Toshiba Satellite laptop believes fully charged battery is critically low -- forces shutdown

2006-11-21 Thread Olek
Sure!

1) Sorry, couldn't find anything relevant here. Even did a few keyword
searches. Then again, my model isn't listed so perhaps that's why.

2) BIOS is current.

3) Installed closest DSDT but no change. Once again, there is no
specific DSDT for my model (Toshiba Satellite 1130-S155) so I used the
generic Satellite one.

Please let me know if I can assist in getting better info on this model
out there. I'm afraid I don't know nearly enough to create an updated
DSDT or anything myself, but I'll be happy to provide any info on my
system and/or test patches. Thanks!

[Bug 72808] system time set as utc randomly

2006-11-21 Thread Bell Kin
Public bug reported:

ubuntu version: 6.06 depper

/etc/localtime -> /usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/Hong_Kong

my system clock is localtime, which is GMT+8,
after update-manager has upgraded something,
or just by random chance, my next startup will set system time as utc, but it
will be fine after next reboot.
for example:
my localtime is 14:00, my system clock is 14:00
after update-manager, reboot,
my system time become 6:00 and my system clock is still 14:00
date will show 6:00 HKT,

[Bug 43745] Re: Ubuntu corrupts real time clock on some dell laptops

2006-11-21 Thread Justin Freeman
It is with great sadness that I report Kubuntu 6.10 Edgy corrupts the
bios on my old (5 years) Inspiron 8000 Pentium 3 1GHZ. So it appears
that this problem is not limited to newer hardware.

Installed Kubuntu 6.10 Edgy, rebooted 5 times or so. And when booting up
the Bios message appeared stating that the date/time had been lost and
did I want to F1 Set the date/time now or F2 ignore this error. Luckily
this BIOS has more user friendly options than my Inspiron 6400 which
simply displays the infuriating "time of date clock stopped" message and
then fails to boot or do anything.

This is very serious guys, what action is being done to investigate this
problem? Nearly 6 months and no resolution.

(I'm surprised this has not been Slashdotted about yet).

[Bug 72810] kde-guidance-powermanager applet doesn't allow changing the cpu scaling governors

2006-11-21 Thread Lixin Chin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-guidance-powermanager

See the summary.

Both klaptopdaemon and the gnome cpu frequency applet allow the user to
choose the specific kernel-space governor used to scale cpu frequency
(ondemand, powersave, performance, conservative or userspace). It would
be nice if the kubuntu power management applet had the same
functionality.

-configureduuids=$(cat /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf | grep "UUID" | sed -e 's/.*=//g')
+configureduuids=$(cat /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf | grep -v "^[[:space:]]*#" | grep

(make sure it's all on one line)

save, and regenerate the initramfs with update-initramfs and please let
me know if this helps with the waiting time?

Note that raid numbering won't be fixed by this change at all. That's up

[Bug 72809] Re: Firefox 1.5.0.8 'Help->About Firefox' seems broken

2006-11-21 Thread Ariel Faigon
Oops, looks like I've smoked something bad.

I believe I didn't actually restart firefox after the upgrade (had one
copy still active) and had some corrupt state somewhere when the error
occured.

I just existed another firefox window, and restarted firefox. This time, unlike
in the first time, it opened on the local 'About Kubuntu' page:
 file:///usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/index.html

Hinting that the upgrade was actually in effect.

And the 'Help -> About Firefox' is working just fine.

Sorry for the spurious report. Please close/ignore.

[Bug 72811] wrong modules loaded?

2006-11-21 Thread Fabio Massimo Di Nitto
Public bug reported:

Hi Ben,

with the lastest 2.6.19 I am having a bunch of issues with my storage
controllers.

The 2 hd (hda/hdb) connected to
00:0f.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc.
VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT823x/A/C PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
can't do DMA anymore. It looks like they are owned by ata_generic or something?
The 2 CD/DVD (hdc/hdd) suffer of the same issue (connected to the same
controller).
Note in the attached dmesg that they are discovered twice, first with
normal/real name and later by a more generic one.

The 4 hd (hd* in .17 and sd[a-d] in .19) to the
00:0c.0 Mass storage controller: Promise Technology, Inc. 20269 (rev 02)
have changed name. This isn't really an issue but we lose control over DMA/32
bit io.

The other storage controllers have no disks connected at the moment. The
Fiber Channel is connected to a powered off SAN so there are no disks.

As a side note, hdc and hdd do not appear in /proc/partitions anylonger.
I am not sure if that's wanted behaviour.

accessible and programs like evince and eog open files just fine. It's
rhythmbox and totem that fail when trying to play a file.

The client/installer program download url is: http://202.144.65.70:8090/
I downloaded the linux version on the site obviously. The windows version is
working fine.

If it has nothing to do with launchpad, wha is launchpad for then? I just
filed a complaint for help - which you call a bug report - it took me
automatically here. I have no idea what launchpad is. And I thought its a
security vulnerability since i cant even get my password in and it involves
passwords and logins.

Thank you.

[Bug 34247] Re: Trash always empty.

2006-11-21 Thread Robert Lange
I have instrumented gnome_vfs_volume_handles_trash(...) in libgnomevfs
/gnome-vfs-volume.c. I have observed that gnome-vfs identifies the type
of the root filesystem as "rootfs". There is no entry for such a
filesystem in gnome-vfs-filesystem-type.c, so it thinks that the root
filesytem, on which my home directory exists, does not handle trash. See
comment 16 of this thread for another explanation of this.

Could someone explain to me what "rootfs" is any why my root filesystem
is not registered as ext3? It was my assumption that the
_GnomeVFSVolumePrivate->filesystem_type parameter was supposed to show
"ext3" as my file system type.

Absent any insights from you, I will now instrument the code that makes
the GnomeVFSVolume structs to find out why my root filesystem is getting
mis-read.

Right now I am 99% sure that this is a problem with gnome-vfs not
reporting filesystem types correctly. Nautilus seems to be behaving
properly given the information gnome-vfs provides.

This problem also seems to be coming back to comment 16 of this thread.
However, I disagree about adding a new filesystem type in the table. I
want to know why it isn't reporting the correct type to start.

[Bug 38140] Re: dhclient3 keeps running after ifdown

2006-11-21 Thread John Clarke
I'm also adding this comment because bug 49801 has been marked as a
duplicate of this one. I'm not sure they are the same: the problem,
dhclient not killed, is the same, but the conditions are different.

I installed Edgy on a new machine late yesterday, changed eth0 from dhcp
to static in /etc/network/interfaces, ran ifdown eth0 && ifup eth0 and
verified that eth0 had come back up with the correct static address.

All was well went I went home a few hours later but when I came back
this morning discovered that the address assigned to eth0 had changed
because the dhcp client was still running.

/var/run/dhclient.eth0.pid was not empty; it contained the pid of the
rogue dhclient process.

I'll second tho's suggestion: could it be caused by ifdown assuming that
the relevant part of /etc/network/interfaces hasn't changed since the
network was brought up?

[Bug 72824] pata_via causes random crashes at boot

2006-11-21 Thread Fabio Massimo Di Nitto
Public bug reported:

Hi Ben,

after adding pata_via to initramfs (as we discussed on IRC), i get
random crashes at boot time. one of the OOPS is attached in a picture.

Removing pata_via makes the system stable again.

I am investigating now if the problem occours only at boot time.

Fabio

There are no unrelated changes.

The changes you might be thinking are unrelated are for Bug 56918 - as

[Bug 45776] Re: Can't pair phone and pc by bluetooth

2006-11-21 Thread Marcel Holtmann
You must make sure that you have a passkey agent running. Otherwise the
system will reject any paring requests for security reasons. Install the
bluez-passkey-gnome package for Edgy or go with the passkey-agent.c
example.

[Bug 72826] incorrect use of Lintian overrides

2006-11-21 Thread Colin Watson
Public bug reported:

$ dpkg --fsys-tarfile prevu_0.4.1bzr46-0ubuntu1_all.deb | tar xO
./usr/share/lintian/overrides/prevu
prevu: binary-without-manpage prevu
prevu: binary-without-manpage prevu-chroot
prevu: binary-without-manpage prevu-init
prevu: binary-without-manpage prevu-update

Lintian overrides are not supposed to be used this way. You should only
override a Lintian message when the message is incorrect, but is not a
bug in Lintian (i.e. your package is a special case of some kind which
isn't worth encoding in Lintian). Overriding correct messages this way
makes it harder to scan packages for problems. Please remove these
overrides and just put up with the warnings until you've written man
pages.
