Ubuntu-be.org wanted to do something a bit out of the ordinary to

real deers, and hopefully fawns as well! Join us on Sunday April 22,
2007 at 14:30 in the nature park in La Reid.

To get there, hop aboard the minivan traveling across Belgium. All

installed. My intentions are to change all OSs to Linux distributions 
as soon as my knowledge of Linux systems is satisfying enough to make 
the switch, and as soon as I converted my files to be readable in Linux.


The reason why I want to do so:
- I need a computer that does what I want;
- I like experimenting, testing, tweaking... "fiddling".
- Microsoft's prices turn my off.

So, here I am.

Ik denk dat u wel het Nederlands verstaat. 

Ikzelf ben een newbie in Ubuntu. Ik ben 75 jaar en leef in De Pinte bij Gent. 
Ben altijd gewoon aan MS Windows geweest. Ik ben in de jaren 1980 met DOS 
begonnen. Steeds alle evoluties meegemaakt en altijd getracht om mee te zijn. 
Ik heb nog les in informatica gegeven in het MO maar ben van huis uit leraar 
wiskunde.  Nu als gepensioneerde, kan en wil ik mij de duurdere software niet 
meer aanschaffen. Ik werk meestal in Windows XP (UK en NL versies); Uit 
nieuwsgierigheid heb ik ook nu Ubuntu op één van mijn pc’s staan, naast Win XP. 
  Het beviel me wel, maar de linuxcommando’s zijn voor mij ongewoon en het vlot 
niet zo. Het gebruik via de grafische interfaces is zeker doenbaar. Het viel me 
echter op dat in er maar niet in luk draadloos in mijn netwerk te komen. Er 
zijn dus wel problemen met Linux. Zolang dit niet vloeiender is, kan Linux en 
ook Ubuntu niet volledig doorbreken. Het zal enkel bij een kleine kring 
“specialisten” doordringen. Nu, het kan veranderen. Maar zolang de “handel” er 
niets kan aan verdienen, zie ik het niet zitten.  Ik ben benieuwd naar uw en 
anderen hun mening.

Beste,

Ja, op de forums is nogal wat afgekankerd over de draadloze verbinding
en de (niet)herkenning van de disks.
Zelf hab ik dat opgelost met:
1. De Netwerk Manager deïnstalleren;
2. Installeren van Wifi-radar en daarmee het netwerk instellen.

Voor het herkennen van de disks:
1. Controlleer /etcfstab en /etc/mtab en pas ze zo nodig aan.
2. Gebruik bij voorkeur de UUID om de disks te mounten, zeker voor de
NTFS partities

Verder kan ik mensen met deze problemen alleen maar naar de forums
verwijzen.

Draadloos internet onder Ubuntu is zowat een kip en ei probleem.

De nodige tools om uw draadloos netwerk te bedienen moeten gedownload
worden met synaptic of een gelijkaardige tool.

Wifi-radar is wel niet zo interessant als je een laptop hebt (het
verbruikt nogal wat stroom, door de manier waarop het werkt).

Die /etc/mtab aanpassen heeft geen zin.

Klopt, maar de installer en de update-manager doen dat normaal zelf voor
je.

En hopelijk dient iedereen met problemen ook bug-rapporten in, anders
worden ze nooit opgelost...

Hier ben je verkeerd.

Toen ik upgrade van Edgy naar Feisty beta, kon ik plots mijn usb drive
niet meer bereiken.
Die bleek in /etc/mtab ook niet te vinden te zijn. Ik heb die er manueel
aan toegevoegd (informatie gevonden in /dev/.udev/db).
Toen werkte het wel.

Dit is vreemd. De informatie in /etc/mtab wordt gegenereerd at runtime. Alles 
wat je daarin wijzigt, ben je bij een reboot terug kwijt. Normaal moet je als 
gebruiker enkel /etc/fstab aanpassen en dan mount zijn werk laten doen.

Onder WinXP werkt dat ook vaak enkel met de drivers die de fabrikant
meelevert op een CD of zo, alleen leveren de meeste fabrikanten geen
drivers mee voor linux, en moeten de linux-programmeurs dus zelf drivers
maken.  Jammer genoeg willen veel fabrikanten zelfs niet eens de nodige
informatie vrijgeven (eventueel onder een geheimhoudingscontract) om die
drivers te kunnen maken (ook al kost dat die firma's geen cent!).

Het helpt als je een computer koopt met linux-vriendelijke hardware, dan
werken de meeste dingen namelijk wel vanzelf.  Misschien nu geen optie,
maar in de toekomst is het wel goed om daar aan te denken.

De "handel" kan er wel al iets aan verdienen (er zitten enkele mensen op
deze lijst die in dat geval zijn), maar voorlopig is het inderdaad nogal
beperkt.  Dat is uiteraard mede een gevolg van de weinige klanten die er
om vragen... en daar heb je het kip en ei-probleem weer!

Sorry hoor, maar zelf heb ik niets in die mappen gezet. 
Dit gebeurde bij de upgrade van Edgy naar Feisty.

Feisty blijkt bij upgrades nog wel meer te veranderen, zoals ondermeer
de disk namen. 
B.v. /hda naar /sda enz...

Kijk maar eens rond op Ubuntu Forum.

Easiest is to order them yourself on shipit, or burn them yourself.

Once we have a large box for ubuntu-be, it will be announced here, but
most likely these will be used for going to computer fairs.

You can distribute CDs (either pressed or burned), give demonstrations
of basic Ubuntu use (e.g. how to install programs) or help people to
install Ubuntu, depending on your skills & the time you have.

Ik moet er ook nog wel bij vertellen dat er ook een probleem was met de
mount points. Twee ervan bleken plots uit zichzelf al files te bevatten
en daarmee konden die drives ook niet gemount worden. (Vermoed ik (ik
ben helaas nog steeds de newbie).)

Mount points verwijderd, nieuwe mount points gemaakt. Files /etc/mtab
en /etc/fstab gechecked, reboot, klaar.

Ik weet niet welk programma of programmaonderdeel daar verantwoordelijk
voor was (newbie, remember). Ik heb Edgy geüpgraded met de Feisty beta
alternate cd (Edgy draaien, cd erin, de upgrade liep vanzelf), daarna
stonden er files in 2 mount points (die ik trouwens niet met de browser
kon openen).

Bedoel je '.created_by_pmount' ?
(Dat wordt toegevoegd door het programma dat automatisch schijven mount
als ze beschikbaar komen, vb. USB schijven & USB sticks, zodat het weet
dat het die directory zelf gemaakt heeft en dus ook zelf mag
verwijderen.)

[Ubuntu-be] Character Encoding

Hi,

Which character encoding is commonly used by Linux users?
I sometimes experience a little trouble viewing mails. Must be because I
use characters like "é" and "ë".

At the moment I use iso-8859-1, but I notice UTF-8 is rather commonly
used.

It also makes a big difference for viewing files on my Windows
partitions; e.g. for my music files I quiet often get a rather strange
name with mostly symbols.

Do you know why the kernel paniced?  (And why the alternate CD didn't
panic, as it uses exactly the same kernel...)

Did you try to boot using the "safe graphics" boot option?

Belangrijker dan bug-rapporten indienen, is dat er ook effectief iets
aan gedaan wordt!

Als je dit leest: Bug #32415, first reported on 2006-02-22 - dus meer
dan een jaar geleden! Die staat na het toevoegen van tientallen logfiles
nog steeds op Needs info. Zelfs Microsoft fixt z'n bugs sneller.
Wat is dan het nut van het indienen van een bug-rapport? In dit concrete
geval: geen enkel, het is totaal tijdverlies.

En dan te bedenken dat er in die bug report een perfect werkende
workaround staat (na vele maanden zoeken en knosselen door
ondergetekende gevonden). Er moet alleen maar iemand van Ubuntu die
workaround in een nieuwe versie van de software steken zodat het default
correct werkt.


Excuseer, dit moest mij eventjes van het hart.

Bestanden in de directory die je als "mount point" gebruikt zijn geen
probleem voor het mounten, maar betekenen vermoedelijk wel dat je per
ongeluk dingen in die map gezet hebt op een moment dat er niks onder
gemount was.

Alleen fstab aanpassen zou voldoende geweest zijn, want mtab wordt
gewoon opnieuw gemaakt bij elke boot met de informatie van 'mount' e.d.

I have no idea. Because the graphical bootup screen was used, I have
no idea what was actually happening. I saw the progress indicator
stopped, my cd drive stopped, there was no activity on my harddisk and
all leds started blinking, a typical sign to indicate a kernel panic.

I tried to reproduce it later on, but luckily I was not able to do so.
It boots up the system, and instead of showing the gdm login screen,
it shows a blue screen "Failed to start the X server." and then a
command line login prompt.

That shouldn't happen when a mail or the part of the mail that you are
viewing has the correct MIME 'Content-Type:' header.

In your mail that I reply to, you are using UTF-8:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8

It's possible to set a charset for mounting Windows partitions, but that
only affects filenames.

If you are talking about tags in e.g. MP3 files, there are some tools
(scripts) that can convert these to UTF-8, but then your Windows
programs might have problems displaying them.  The problem is that ID3
tags have no (standard) way to tell which charset is used in them.

You can try to switch to the virtual console that has the boot messages
before it panics.

If the live-cd can't start X with the "safe graphics" option, that must
mean your graphics card has no VESA BIOS or it is broken...?

Or do you mean that happened only _after_ installing with the
alternative CD?

It doesn't occur any more... even when booting with the "quiet" and
"splash" boot options.
An improvement :)

Booting from the live cd results in a failing X, installing Feisty
results in a failing X... everything results in a failing X (even the
reconfiguring). The only thing that helped here was installing the ATI
proprietary drivers, what I was about to do anyway in order to use my
1680x1050 resolution.

The X server provided on the installation media (live or alternate) is
clearly broken, as stated in the existing bug report. They were aware
of it before the final release of Feisty.

Vesa used to work before Feisty, and works with other distro's.

Where does it say that?

(Ctrl+U should pop up the source of the mail you are viewing.)

If you know about command lines and changing /etc/fstab, these options
are listed in 'man mount' (this information is also available in the
GNOME help browser).

The options you need are or might be different for FAT/VFAT and NTFS,
and I'm not sure what you would need for your Windows partitions (and I
don't have any anymore to test on).

Even more confusing:

Mime says (Ctrl+U) : iso-8859-15

But: when I go:

evolution > edit > preferences > mail preferences > general

I see that the default character encoding is set to ISO-8859-1

And you see it as UTF-8

Strange indeed.

If you are looking at my mails: that's what I chose as default encoding
in Evolution (because some other mail clients have/had problems with
utf-8), but your mails seem to be utf-8...

Any way, both should work, as long as the charset setting is correct.

After a bit of delay (sorry Benoît for making you wait 1 hour!), the 
minibus arrived in La Reid. We had the chance to see deer, wild boars, 
wolves, foxes, squirrels and other animals. Most fawns weren't so young 
anymore, but we did manage to spot *Feisty* nonetheless. All in all, 
it's been a nice and quiet afternoon, a nice walk in this park, which 
ended around ice cream and drinks. Not so bad...
