[techtalk] ATI Rage LT Pro
Dear all, Does anyone know how to configure X for this card, ATI Rage LT Pro? I'm really messed up and I don't know next to nothing about linux. My screen can do 1024x768 with 16 bpp and 60hz under windows, it's a TFT screen of unknown brand (and no markings). I am using red hat 6.0 for now. Re: [techtalk] ATI Rage LT Pro
Yaaah! first time I'm able to actually help >on a Linux listserve and not just lurk. Thank you so very, very much! I've tried to get X work since the beginning of the summer. This (solution 1) worked, but the "-"'s had all been changed to "^M"'s in the new config file. That was easy to fix, though. [techtalk] KDE and users and themes, oh?
Dear all, after struggling all summer with only one thing: getting X to work, it only took one day since I joined this list. After I got X working, I tried to get the modem to work. Actually, that was super-easy (my old noisy box. My pcmcia-modem doesn't even work under windows yet). So now I'm typing this from within X! Anyway, here's my new questions (it never ends :) 1) I seem to have too old a version of KDE (which is what I installed) to use the themes at http://kde.themes.org . How can I find out which version I'm using? Best wishes, Sunnanvind -- http://home.swipnet.se/sunnanvind Hjärtan och blomster etc etc [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linuxchix.org
[techtalk] Users and everything?
I'm currently logging in as root, but I've been told 9 times that that's a bad idea. So how can I move all mail email settings, KDE desktop settings and so on to my recently added user (myself)? Thanks, but.. how can I connect to the internet when I'm not root? The modem starts dialing, and then I get a "the ppp deamon died unexpectedly". When I'm root, everythings fine. [techtalk] KFM weirdness.
I'm using KDE + RedHat (so sue me ;), and I have a KFM browser window that's trying to open a webpage ( http://www.svt.se/noje/robinson , not that it matters). Whenever I close that window, all my icons dissappear and I'm unable to start programs under KDE. All I can do is restart KDE, and there I get that browser window again. How can I rid myself of it? [techtalk] KDE or no way?
Hey all, I was just fiddling with the key settings in KDE, and I think I set "alt" to "iconify window" or something similarly stupid; and now I keep getting a "wrong charset" message and X crashes on me. Any ideas on which rc I should vi? The problems only when I log in as user; the root user can still startx and KDE shows up fine. So how can I fix this or how can I ditch KDE altogether? I'm using RH6.0. Sunnan (I'm sure I've not provided enough info for anyone to help. Hi all; Anyone know a good ppp-program? I use kppp now which I have to run in a su root terminal. Also, does anyone know a good webbrowser? Preferrably good css support. [techtalk] X emulator for X?
I know that the topic sounds wierd, but here's what I really meant: Some programs will only run in for example 604x480x8bpp. My screen works best in 1024x768x16bpp (it's a tft-screen), so is there a way to trick programs and make them run in a window, while believing that they run in full screen in their preffered resolution/color depth? I got Grim Fandango running (with very good speed and sound) with wine; but it only used the top left 640x480 pixels, and left the unused pixels blinking wildly. I would rather have it in a window, like quake.x11 does. Any other workarounds/solutions, like having a virtual extra screen that I can switch to? [techtalk] Su slow?
The "su" command on my system has become remarkably slow - is this a sign that security's been compromised? It used to be pretty fast, just type su and the password... now it takes like ages... Sunnan -- http://home.swipnet.se/sunnanvind I am you. [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linuxchix.org

[techtalk] Mail configurations
Hello, everybody, I have been having trouble with my mail configuration since day one. Here is the situation; I have my mail with one isp (swipnet), and use another to dial up. My old isp doesn't allow me to use the SMTP server, so I want to use my own computer for sending. I configured exim with the defaults and told emacs that it should display my email adress as [EMAIL PROTECTED] which is the adress leading to the pop account at my old isp, the mail I check. The problem is that some of the mail won't get through; it complains that "reverie does not exist". reverie is the name I arbitrarily chose as my localhost name, and of course it doesn't exist as a locator. The question is, of course, how do I config exim properly for a situation like this? ___ techtalk mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linux.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/techtalk

[techtalk] Lilo (or is it mbr?) woes
I haven't had any problems with this on other distros, so this might or mightn't be debian specific. The problem is that updating lilo doesn't seem to work. The labels I currently have running, the ones I can choose between at boot, are pglfb and h. The former is my linuxpartition, and the latter is dos (currently that directory is removed from my fat partition, but I like to keep it bootable just in case I'll add freedos or something). I've compiled kernel v 2.2.17, and also changed the labels in /etc/lilo.conf to linux and h (still). I've run lilo as root (sbin is in roots path on my system), and it says "adding linux *; adding h" but when I reboot, it's still pglfb, and it boots kernel 2.2.15. I am using the debian mbr-program (that promts you to pick a partition to boot from) What am I doing wrong? kent wrote: I don't know why the labels wouldn't change. Have your pointed lilo.conf to your new kernel as well? Why don't you post your lilo.conf so we can take a look. Yeah, I used the debian kernel-package to change my lilo.conf, but I checked it manually, and it seems pointed correctly. Here's my lilo.conf, minus comments: boot=/dev/hda5 root=/dev/hda5 compact install=/boot/boot.b delay=20 map=/boot/map vga=ask image=/vmlinuz label=linux read-only other=/dev/hda1 label=h #end of file. Now, hda1 is my old windows partition (with the windows directory deleted, I have my poetry and illegally copied music there). /vmlinuz is a symlink to /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.17 . As I said in the original message (for new viewers), even though I've run /sbin/lilo, I'm still presented with the old labels (and old kernel) at boot. Only thing that I can think of is that the old lilo may have gotten into the mbr (overwriting the debian one, which might cause the old lilo to be used instead of the new one, which you installed on the partition). Maybe try running install-mbr to put debian-mbr there again (you probably know this, but if you're changing the mbr, you should have a non-hard-drive way of booting, like a floppy, which you already have since you've been changing lilo, right? (Oh, and remember to take out the floppy :) Once I was confused for hours because after recompiling my kernel, it was still using the old one. Turned out I had forgotten to take out the floppy I'd made in case the new kernel didn't work.))? Me, Sunnan: I did change it to just /dev/hda, wich resulted in the new lilo overwriting the mbr (it hadn't before). While this works, I'd like the Debian mbr back, like it used to be. Is it just "install-mbr" as root? (I don't know anything about this, I tried looking in the man page.)
