I was already running unstable, I was just doing my regular:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

   But anyway, here's my experience upgrading woody from X 3.3.6 to 4.0.1.  I
   got out of X, and did an 'apt-get install xserver-xfree86'.

This actually worked like a charm. Thanks a lot!
