Nice job, Deb. After reading some of the comments about the interview I
have to agree with something you said in the past--some people's children
really *don't* know how to act in public!

available at http://www.megaloman.com/~hany/RPM/gnumeric.html

I had a terrible time getting connected in the beginning. I found a page on
a website called Control-Escape that explained the process clearly. I have
no trouble now connecting with Red Hat or Mandrake.

You can see the page at http://www.control-escape.com/lx-internet.html .

I'm running Redhat 6.0 as well. I recently upgraded the kernel to 2.2.16 to
fix a potential security hole. Although Redhat listed the kernel as being
for version 6.2, there are i386 rpms that work just fine with version 6.0.

As for other parts of the system, I'm constantly upgrading bits and pieces
to try out new software. If the new files are incompatable, you'll get an
error message during the upgrade. So far none of my tinkering has caused a
problem on my system.

If you're concerned about potential problems, you can do a dry run. If you
do this:

rpm --test

it tests the installation without actually doing it.

If you're using your system to connect to the internet, you might want to
give yourself a little more practice at installing kernels by getting the
latest one (2.2.16-3). Redhat sent an advisory about a security bug
involving setuid in all kernels before 2.2.15. The new kernel also fixes a
SCSI error handling problem.

You can download the latest kernel at

i386:
ftp://updates.redhat.com/6.2/i386/kernel-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm
ftp://updates.redhat.com/6.2/i386/kernel-headers-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm

ftp://updates.redhat.com/6.2/i386/kernel-utils-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm
ftp://updates.redhat.com/6.2/i386/kernel-smp-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm
ftp://updates.redhat.com/6.2/i386/kernel-BOOT-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm

ftp://updates.redhat.com/6.2/i386/kernel-ibcs-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm

(After all, practice makes perfect. ;->)

Most CD-ROM's use the ISO 9660 file system. You might find more information
in the Linux CD-ROM Howto http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CDROM-HOWTO.html.

Try these howtos:
- The Linux Hardware Compatibility Howto
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO.html
- Palm Howto http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/PalmOS-HOWTO.html

There is also the - Linux Hardware Database at http://www.linhardware.com/

Note: Since you're into graphics, you might like to have a look at a site
called "The Graphics Muse" at http://www.graphics-muse.org/.

This should keep you out of trouble for a while! ;->

For Specific Red Hat information, go to their site at
http://www.redhat.com/services/training/ . They also have a page listing
prerequisites for the course at
http://www.redhat.com/services/training/training_prereq.html.

If you're interested in training programs other than Red Hat's, there's a
reference site called "Lintraining" at http://lintraining.com/ that can
tell you about all of the certification programs.

There's a guy in Canada that I often go to for cheap cd's. His name
is Bill Bennet (known as the ComputerHelperGuy)
http://www.chguy.net/index.html . He'll provide you with just about
anything you want--standard distro's, special orders, BSD, you
name it. If it's available, he'll burn it for you. Single CD's go for $5
Canadian.

He does ship to the U.S. I don't know about other countries, but
you can ask. I've found him to be very accommodating. He provides
e-mail support for free if you have a problem.

He's also a certified nutbar. His e-mails are always interesting!
