RH don't ship supermount. I think this is the magicdev daemon, which
I dislike intensely. It confuses me :) Remove magicdev. It doesn't
break anything if you do this. rpm -e magicdev.

[techtalk] can linux on x86 mount HFS?

2000-08-24 Thread Ryan Thibodeau

If the OS on your old hard drive is 8.6 or 9, it is likely that it is
HFS+ format, so mounting it through your other linux box won't work.
However. you could just attach
the old drive to another IDE Bus on your iMac , i.e. temporarily
disconnect your CD-ROM drive and use that IDE cable (I'm assuming this
can be done on the iMac, I've only
worked with G3's and G4's). This *might* allow you to mount both drives
simultaneously, and perform the transfer.

[techtalk] XFree86 Configuration problems

2000-08-24 Thread Michelle Sims

Hi all. I'm beating my head agains the wall here -
someone please stop me!

Our client has a Mac G4...installed yellow dow linux
which aparrently went fine. Have yaboot configured.
But startx hung forever, and when it did finally start
the colormap was all messed up...and it promptly
crashes.

Video crd says it is a ATY RAGE 128s (are ATI and ATY
the same?) which in theory shuld work with the SVGA
server

The Xconfiguratior acts very wierd - run it, and is
says probing found oFfb ATY Rage128 - but no options
fpr monitor sync, resolution, etc. The file it writes
seems incomplete as well. (small portion attached
below)

So I tried installing XFree 4.0.1 to see if that woul
d help. X still doesn't start, but at least it gives
error messages attached below.
So it looks like its never configurig the right
server etc, but I'm not sure what the setting should
be.

Any clues as to the problem? If it is a Rage128 is is
on the hardware support lists

TIA for any help!

Re: [techtalk] VMWare Question

2000-08-24 Thread Sheryl Weidner

Hello,

If you have the occasional need to run Windows applications (like Office
apps, Photoshop, etc.) but no hardcore Windows needs (like playing games,
using NetBEUI networking, etc.), VMWare may be overkill for you. You may
also find that with your system configuration, your resources are severely
taxed by VMWare, since it allocates disk, memory and processor for Windows
which it takes away from your Linux system.

An alternative (this is half-plug - I occasionally consult for these
people, but I also use their product) would be Win4Lin from TreLOS
Software. It runs Windows in an X-window on your desktop, and doesn't
separate the memory/drive/processor allocation from Linux. So in addition
to being able to have all of your Windows files accessible even when
you're not running Windows, the performance is considerably better than
VMWare on a desktop-class machine.

Their version 1.0 product is currently on firesale at $35 (version 2.0
will be out in October, and 1.0 owners get a free upgrade to 2.0).
Version 1.0 doesn't include sound support, but 2.0 does. They're at:

http://www.trelos.com/

You can also download an evaluation version of the software if you want to
try before you buy.

Here's a link to their white paper, which also talks about differences
between Win4Lin and VMWare (besides the price tag):

http://www.trelos.com/trelos/Trelos/Products/Win4Lin_Whitepaper.htm

Hope this helps,
Saska

Much thanks,

I'm using it at work with a Celeron 300 and 256 MB RAM. So I think
you'll be OK on the processor side, but might want to be careful with
that RAM. Depends on what Windows you're installing (I got Win2000 with
128 MB) and how many swap space you've got - you don't want to run out
of swap space! But Netscape actually takes up more memory after running
for 3 hours than vmware - so I should think you'll be ok.

Anything else wth vmware was really easy - use the configuration
wizard, and if you have extra wishes, just play around with it! Oh, and
by all means install the vmware graphics drivers, as they do help a
lot. I've also tried not to swap workspaces when I'm using vmware,
since it crashed my X when I did that (without the drivers, though).

HTH,

Britta

[techtalk] XFree86 Configuration Problems

2000-08-24 Thread Ryan Thibodeau

Hi Michelle,

I feel your pain. Every time I upgrade my Linux machine its like a crusade
to get the video card to work properly .This is one of the drawbacks of
using Linux with cutting edge technology, often the correct drivers simply
don't exist yet. However, you might just be able to get this thing working.

It sounds like Xconfigurator isn't writing the XFree86 configuration file
correctly. The error messages you listed in your post are actually portions
of this file (/etc/X11/XF86Config, my apologies if you knew that already).

A few things to try, if you haven't already:

1. In Xconfigurator, don't allow linux to probe for the card (select "don't
probe") , this will allow you to configure the card yourself. You should be
presented with a list of video cards. Select "Unlisted Card" at the bottom
of the card list. This should prompt you for various video card options such
as amount of video memory available, in your case with a new card you should
probably pick the highest memory amount presented. When Xconfigurator asks
you what server you want to use, pick SVGA, if this option is not available,
this may be your problem. You can download the latest XFree86 SVGA server
rpm from Redhat. After you have selected the SVGA server you will likely be
presented with a list of screen resolutions and bit depths, I usually pick
the lowest possible settings just to try to get things working, if it works,
you can always reconfigure and bump up the settings. After you have selected
your settings, Xconfigurator should write the settings to
/etc/X11/XF86/Config. Type startx and cross your fingers.

2. If you can't get it to work with the SVGA server, you could try VGA 16
color mode until you get it figured out. 16 color mode most certainly bites,
but its better than nothing. This can be done by following the steps above,
but selecting "VGA 16" in the box where you selected "SVGA".

3. Try starting X in various bit depth modes:

startx -- -bpp 8

startx -- -bpp 16

startx -- -bpp 24

If any of these things work, great. If not, post again, and we'll get really
crazy with thing and start editing the config file.

[techtalk] (another) VMWare Question

2000-08-24 Thread Vinnie

Out of curiousity, has anyone tried using VMWare with a monolithic kernel?

(yes, I'm being sick and twisted and altogether vinnie-like here)

I really haven't got the first clue how to start, but it strikes me as an
interesting challenge...anyone else done it yet?

Vinnie (who really doesn't have the time to do it, and therefore, unless
she comes up with something in the next 16 hours will probably just make a
nice, modular kernel or something)

[techtalk] VMWare Question

2000-08-24 Thread Lyric .

Hi there

I'm just wondering if anyone out there has any experience with VMWare for
Linux 2.0.

I'm thinking about purchasing it and installing it at home so I can run
Windows if I need to.

My system is an Athlon 650 with 128 megs of RAM.

Thanks
