If the OS on your old hard drive is 8.6 or 9,  it is likely that it is
HFS+ format, so mounting it through your other linux box won't work.
However. you could just attach
the old drive to another IDE Bus on your iMac , i.e. temporarily
disconnect your CD-ROM drive and use that IDE cable (I'm assuming this
can be done on the iMac, I've only
worked with G3's and G4's). This *might* allow you to mount both drives
simultaneously, and perform the transfer.
