[Talks] Current smallest/thinnest Talks-compatible phone?
Hi Folks, last time I checked, the smallest/thinnest keypad Talks-compatible phone was the Nokia C5 - does anyone know if there's anything smaller/thinner now available please? I'm looking for something that is less of a brick than my N86, relatively speaking, to have as a second phone... [Talks] n86
heya folks, With the nokia n86 what is the best standby theme to have as at the moment have it set to horizontal and when I put it to basic I couldnt seem to control anything even accessing the menu was hard. Also does the n86 take a micro SD memory card and whats the capacity memory? can it take 16gb cards? thanks in advance cheers, Jim ___ Talks mailing list Talks@talksusers.com http://lists.talksusers.com/mailman/listinfo/talks Hosting of this list provided courtesy of: eHosting Limited: http://www.ehosting.com/ and Talknav Inc. http://www.talknav.net/
Re: [Talks] n86
Jim setting it to basic your arrow keys will start programs directly. You need to set your arrow keys up in the Settings when in basic mode. Also accessing the menu is easy! You just press the talks key twice. This is the same regardless of how you have it set Basic or horizontal. Yes the N86 does support the MicroSDHC cards. This will show up as drive F: on the phone. You can put up to a 32GB card in it. Signed: Stephen Giggar Skype: dr-phone. Hardware eventually fails, software eventually works. Re: [Talks] update should I?
Yes the settings for selecting access points is read, along with the settings for setting the bit rate for the different kind of connection in the Nokia Internet Radio program. I would suggest if you used the object viewer to setup rolls to do things in the main screen of the Internet Radio program that you now do a reset rolls on screen to help insure things are working correctly. To do this, 1. start the Internet Radio program and go to the main screen. 2. Press Talks release it and press and hold the Select key for about 1 second. 3. Now press the select key again. 4. This will bring up a list of two options. 5. Arrow down to reset rolls on screen and press select. 6. Answer YES to reset the rolls. 7. Press SoftKey2 to back out of the Nokia Internet Radio program. Re: [Talks] TALKS 5.20 Release Notes
Yes it was given in the release notes about reading HELP information like on the N86. See the below lines. This is why it is good to read all the release note more then one time. Some times you may have to read them 3 or 4 times to pick up all the changes. Sometime all models aren't listed just the type of phone. 3.3. Access to embedded browser views (e.g. Help screens) An increasing number of applications are using an embedded version of web browser to display content that does not directly come from a web page. Examples are the display of Help pages in many applications on 3rd Edition FP2 and later phones, contents of e-mail messages in HTML format and the Conversations view on Symbian^3 phones. On touch phones, these screens can be recognized by the fact that the virtual keyboard for the browser is displayed, but that navigating the page beyond the page title is not possible. Also, the announcement of the number of links (or “Page has no links”) is missing. Version 5.20 offers a method to make the textual content (though not the links) in some of these pages accessible upon request: when such a page is shown on the screen, simply press [Talks],[Down] to read the page contents. If necessary, this will first try to convert the page text into a readable format, and then start reading it. In some cases, it may be necessary to press the key a second time to commence reading. Also, this method does not yet work in all applications. Signed: Stephen Giggar Skype: dr-phone. Hardware eventually fails, software eventually works. For the full release notes please read below. You can immediately download the latest version of Talks from the TalkNav web-site, and for those of you needing an update to your license, we can provide these 24 hours a day 7 days a week with instant activation. enjoy... Nuance TALKS&ZOOMS Version 5.20 Release Notification 1. Introduction We proudly announce the release of the Nuance Accessibility Suite – Nuance TALKS and ZOOMS – Version 5.20 supporting Series 60 3rd Edition / 5th Edition for February 17, 2011. This version also introduces support for Symbian^3 in Nuance TALKS. Screen magnification using ZOOMS is not yet supported on Symbian^3 in this release. For Users with a Premium license this version also contains the new Daisy2go 2.01 minor update. This release uses the same versions of Eloquence and Vocalizer as the previous one (6.1.123 and 5.22, respectively). The TTS installation file for Eloquence US English has been updated to extend the user dictionary. Version 5.20 is a free upgrade for all Premium Edition licenses generated after November 13th, 2007 (the release date of TALKS 3.50 for 3rd Edition). In particular, this means that it can be installed by any customer who is currently able to run version 4.11 or 5.01 without requiring a new license. 2. The new handsets 2.1. Changes to the list of supported phone models The following handsets are newly supported (please see section 4 “Known Issues” about some limitations): Nokia C6-00 Nokia C7-00 Nokia E5-00 Nokia N8-00 We also assume the following phones to work without major problems. However we have not got enough test results yet to definitely confirm this: Nokia C5-03 Nokia C6-01 Nokia E7-00 See section 6 for a full list of compatible handsets for this version. 3. What’s New? This section lists the improvements of TALKS&ZOOMS 5.20 compared to the previous version (5.01). 3.1. Support for Symbian^3 Nuance TALKS 5.20 is the first screen reader that supports the new Symbian^3 platform that is used by Nokia in some of its most recent smartphone models, such as the N8-00 and the C7-00. Support for the just-released E7-00 is likely, but has not yet been confirmed. Overall, access to Symbian^3 works in a very similar manner to the approach used for 5th Edition touch screen phones, by relying on a combination of list navigation using the side keys of the phone together with the ability to “explore” the screen. As reminder, “exploring” can be started by holding the finger on one position for about hal

Re: [Talks] update should I?
It's all great now the update is safe and I recommend it talks and the e72 running the latest firmware is very good now. I still can't get my e72 to see and work with my ethanet printer but my dislike of reading manuals probably has a lot to do with that. So the update is safe now. and when you get a new text message talks now says one new message just like the n95 did. Before this latest talks update you had to click on documents in inbox but now it works as it should. [Talks] Memory full [was "Re: update should I?"]
Earlier I had speculated that a memory leak in Talks may be contributing to these memory full errors. This was based on a incomplete search I did on the web. After that speculation, it was pointed out to me that sighted userws, who weren't running Talks, were also seeing these memory full errors. I verified this by doing a more thorough search. My point is that I suspect there was a memory leak in Talks, which has now been fixed, and will probably result in many fewer memory full errors for us Talks users. However, there are probably still some memory issues in the applications bundled with our Series 60 cell phones, so these memory full errors may not go away completely. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com On 2/17/2011 8:31 PM, Stephen Giggar wrote: It may take me a while to find out about the memory full. yes I think it's great. one thing puzzles me how they supported a feature in maps but not in walk mode. Re: [Talks] update should I?
I just press select on each email message and it's read to me. If a message is very important I read it line by line using the down arrow key to read each line. I have zooms disabled that is I turn it off in the view menu after installing talks. I find the occasional email message that won't read and these seem to be in most cases from apple users. The other day for some odd reason the phone just dumped the 2 mail boxes I had been using for months. There was no email icon on the home screen so I went to messaging and my email boxes were gone. I had to create them from scratch then to make one a primary mail box I had to receive an email message. if you don't you are told primary can not be set connect to mail box first. Even if you are connected at the time it will still say this. Once you receive a new email message then you can set the primary. Hi Stephen, In the notes, under "older phones 60 3rd edition" which can still be updated to 5.00,my current phone is listed (Nokia n82). Does this mean the new update will not work on my phone? I would suggest if you used the object viewer to setup rolls to do things in the main screen of the Internet Radio program that you now do a reset rolls on screen to help insure things are working correctly. To do this, 1. start the Internet Radio program and go to the main screen. 2. Press Talks release it and press and hold the Select key for about 1 second. 3. Now press the select key again. 4. [Talks] Ovi Maps
Hi. I had given Ovi Maps a go today with Talks. It seems to me that Talks will not announce the current street when in navogation mode for walk or drive. I don't know what language you normally use! But did you install the language that had the street support for the OVI Maps? I know this will tell you what street to turn on. This is in version 3.03 and above of OVI Maps. I don't know if that will help or not. I think you can also use the volume keys on the side of the phone to raze the voice for the OVI Maps program. Then i think you can use the number 4 to have the program re say it if you missed it. Just a suggestion. Produced on a Nokia N95 smart phone using a Symbian based screen reader. Eleanor and all, can I just please remind folk that if you wish to drop a simple thank you message, that this should be done off list, messages of thanks, whilst highly appreciated no doubt, have no place in mainstream list traffic. if we have to bar people from the list, or moderate people for this, we shall do, the list has far to many folk on it to allow such traffic to be sent to everyone. as I say, its a kind thought, no doubt appreciated by those who have helped you, but the other thousand plus list members do not require this additional list traffic. many thanks. if you are using the TalkNav FTP, then you just need the Talks 5.2 signed file, go to www.talknav.com, click on Nuance Accessibility, then Downloads, then click the, here, link to download from TalkNav's FTP directly, then select Nuance Accessibility, then Symbian, then 3rd / 5th edition, you're now in the correct directory. Re: [Talks] Where to download the latest talks?
David, The Blind Sea site stores the download files in a ZIP, this contains the entire Talks download set, all the synths, all the files etc, so its larger than you probably need, if you just want the latest Talks file itself, go to the TalkNav FTP site at www.talknav.com and click on Nuance Accessiblity, Downloads, TalkNav FTP Site, Nuance Accessibility, Symbian, 3rd / 5th edition and you'll see it right there unzipped. Nuance TALKS&ZOOMS Version 5.20 Release Notification 1. Introduction We proudly announce the release of the Nuance Accessibility Suite - Nuance TALKS and ZOOMS - Version 5.20 supporting Series 60 3rd Edition / 5th Edition for February 17, 2011. Changes to the list of supported phone models The following handsets are newly supported (please see section 4 "Known Issues" about some limitations): Nokia C6-00 Nokia C7-00 Nokia E5-00 Nokia N8-00 We also assume the following phones to work without major problems. However we have not got enough test results yet to definitely confirm this: Nokia C5-03 Nokia C6-01 Nokia E7-00 See section 6 for a full list of compatible handsets for this version. 3. What's New? This section lists the improvements of TALKS&ZOOMS 5.20 compared to the previous version (5.01). 3.1. Support for Symbian^3 Nuance TALKS 5.20 is the first screen reader that supports the new Symbian^3 platform that is used by Nokia in some of its most recent smartphone models, such as the N8-00 and the C7-00. Support for the just-released E7-00 is likely, but has not yet been confirmed. Overall, access to Symbian^3 works in a very similar manner to the approach used for 5th Edition touch screen phones, by relying on a combination of list navigation using the side keys of the phone together with the ability to "explore" the screen. As reminder, "exploring" can be started by holding the finger on one position for about half a second, and then moving around. Lifting and tapping again anywhere on the screen will click on the most recently "explored" position. As usual, some features, such as side key navigation, are only available once the phone has been powered off and back on after installing or re-enabling TALKS. As a special feature for Symbian^3 phones which do not include physical [Call] and [Exit] keys, such as the N8-00, two new TALKS shortcuts have been introduced to still be able to perform these important functions quickly: [Talks],[Power] simulates the [Call] key, e.g. to accept an incoming call or to open the list of most recently dialled calls. [Talks],[long Power] simulates the [Exit] key, to hang up or reject a call. Note that the

Re: [Talks] n86 back cover
Hi. Ok the cover of the n86 difficult to take off for a reason, and that reason is it holds the memory card in place. turn the phone over in your hand so the back is facing up towards the ceiling and the camera is furthest away from you. The lower half of the cover is flat below the lens slider. On the bottom edge there is a little groove you can put a pair of tweezers into and lever upwards away from the phone. The cover is a pig to get off, and is quite stiff, indeed, I was so worried I purchased two more, just in case one bust. The cover will come away in one piece, exposing the battery and the sim slot, as well as the memory card slot, which is to the right of the lens cover. The sim slot is accessed by taking the battery out and sliding the sim into a little slot on the right of the now exposed back face of the phone, I can't remember which way it goes in, but once it's in it stays well in. You then replace the battery and slide the memory card into the slot half way, where you will feel resistance, as there's a spring. Hold the memory card in while replacing the cover, top edge first, so the top edge snaps over the memory card, the fitting is very snug, so don't worry about a little pressure. Re: [Talks] update should I?
I'm using this new TALKS on my N82 and it's working just fine. So far I haven't had any more of the memory full issues which is great. Can someone please either post a direct link or email me a link or the file for installing Nokia Internet Radio on my N82. My email address is: mrc1...@gmail.com Thanks in advance. Re: [Talks] n86 back cover
No you are not doing the memory card correct. You need to press in on the memory card until you feel it click. Then when you remove your finger, the memory card will stay in the phone. The back of the n86 is used for the FM transmitter. Like i said, the memory card locks in on it's own. To remove the memory card, press in on it and you will feel a click and then when you remove your finger it will pop out so you then can pull it out. Now as far as removing the back of the n86, i use a dine to stick in the plot and then i turn the dine and the back of the n86 will pop lose so i can then use my fingers to remove it. But again, the back of the n86 doesn't hold the memory card in the phone if the memory card is put into the phone correctly. Like i said you need to press it in until it clicks and then release it. You need to press it in and it will go down below the edge of the plot before it will click. I use a paper click being i do not have any long fingernails. Re: [Talks] Ovi Maps
I thought I would post this just encase it help you. This is from the release note file and what it says about OVI Maps. There is some limitation in Walk mode. So please read the below. The suggestion about drive mode with the pressing of up arrow may also help you. * On the "My Position" screen, TALKS reads the address of the current position by default. Pressing [Talks],[long Key 2] for additional information also reads the city/region. * While following a route on the "Drive" and "Walk" screens, TALKS will read the street and distance to the next turn by default, and give additional information (e.g. current position, distance to destination etc.) when pressing [Talks],[long Key 2]. * While following a route in "driving" mode, it is possible to preview the next turns by pressing [Up] several times. This will read the street names and distances to travel for each of the turns. This feature is not available in "walking" mode. * While following a route, the standard keyboard commands of Ovi Maps are available, such as [4] to repeat reading of the last instruction and [2] to save the current position as a favourite. * Additional services, such as "Weather", "Events" or "More" in the main menu are not yet accessible. * The contents of the "About" screen (under Options > Support) are currently not read. Re: [Talks] n86 back cover
Hi Jim, Taking off the back cover of the N86 is a little tricky because it's difficult to know where it separates from what would be the back of the phone at the top. I've found some small indentations near the bottom of the back cover that require a little fingernail power as you also push the cover toward the bottom of the phone. The cover takes up about three-fourths of the back of the phone and I've learned that you can't force it but you do have to be firm. Try using one hand to find those little slots on the sides and the other to push the back cover toward the bottom of the phone. If you can just lift one corner of the cover, at the bottom on the left or right side, it should work. Remember, the back cover is very thin. I hope this helps some. Sorry for the length of the explanation. Regards, Rev.
