Re: [Tagging] Feature Proposal - RFC - Start moving proposal announcements to the new forum

2022-11-21 Thread Davidoskky via Tagging

The new forum may be also more capable of handling large volume of
posts - you can

easily mute threads and entire categories.

It's also possible to subscribe to only the first post in a category.

Thus, you may set to be notified whenever a new proposal is posted and
only then choose if you're interested in such thread and subscribe to
the replies.

If you're not interested in the proposal you have to do nothing: you
receive the notification, read through whatever is proposed and close
the web page.

Which is much better than filtering/muting threads on an email client
for several reasons.

I do believe that if proposals were being announced on IRC all this
time, we would now be extensively discussing about the major advantages
of IRC over forums.

There is still considerable heat in the voting. Ballot casting time
will be extended to give three weeks of voting.

[Tagging] species:language to loc_name:language

2022-11-21 Thread Carlos Sánchez
In a lot of cases, users are using local names in the values for species
and genus keys.
This is an error as genus and species only exist in latin. For local/vulgar
name users should use another key or be obtained using the wikidata
information.

I suggest changing species:language to l
oc_name:language as for
the same species there exists a huge variability of common names, not only
differing by language.

I disagree
loc_name is a local name, thus a name=*
but a common descriptive string isn't a name=* nor a loc_name=*

moreover I see no problem with a genus=* having one or more valid genus:xx

finally, many trees have more than one name in the local language, even
in the same geographical area, so loc_name does not solve the problem
better than genius:xx

I'm thinking that highway=wheel_bath might be better suited. Any
thoughts on this?

Perhaps.

There were related discussion recently about similar decontaminations
used for pedestrains
(i.e.
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:man_made=footwear_decontamination)
and other

cleaning facilities that might be accompanied by bigger tag:

https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/what-key-should-be-tagged-for-these-amenities/5598/5

so you may want to look there.

Some building sites (large) have wheel cleaning done on exit to stop
the access roads getting dirty - nothing to do with disinfection.

Possibly these 2 should be combined into one main tag with a secondary
tag for disinfection/cleaning/*???

+1. I have tagged one such facility at
https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/9915766339 as

access no

amenity
car_wash
note Pour
ameliorer le poussiere
truck_wash yes

I think that most such facilities (both for desinfection and washing
cars/trucks) are on non-public-roads, and thus a highway tag (in the
British sense of highway being a public road of whatever size, even
footpaths can be highways) would not seem like the right tag for me.
Also, I have seen desinfection baths like this for bicycles (yes, I'm
Dutch) and pedestrians. Seldom on public roads (except in the extreme
heights of the footh- and mouth-disease crisis) and usually onto the
entrance/exit of farms - and for pedestrians - on public swimming pools
(to combat foot fungi).

loc_name=* is for the local name of the feature itself, in other words,
the local version of name=*. Some famous trees are known by proper
names, but that's different than the (common) name of the species as a
whole.

Not sure how change proposed in the second paragraph solves what
you mentioned in the first.

It also goes against established meaning of loc_name

loc_name:en is for English local name of a tree, not for English name of its
species
(this is rarely used as local names are rarely in multiple languages, but
there is no benefit from breaking this definition and mostly
systematic tag variants for names)
