2016-05-20 Thread Barry G Butler

I'm asked by a camera person to record air puns sound for his VR shotsHe
has a GoPro 6 unit surround unit
If I buy the Core Tetra, how do I sync the two and put the end result to a
medium ??
Thanks

Re: [Sursound] Tetra and Go Pro

2016-05-20 Thread Steven Boardman
You can either sync the old school clapper board way from the visual cue, or if
you record audio via the go pro’s you can sync by eye, matching the waveform to
a transient like a clapper. Make sure all the capsule recordings (or your
converted b-format channels) stay phase locked, and move all at the same time.
Once you have it synced you need know what medium it is to be used in to know
how to process it.
Otherwise for google 360 use the Jump Inspector guidelines. This has been
talked about recently, and done successfully here so do a search.

Bruce Wiggins (thanks Bruce) has done a how to on this

Re: [Sursound] Tetra and Go Pro

2016-05-20 Thread Luke David Harris
Purely theoretical - but has anyone experimented with recording with an
extra channel that you could use to record ltc timecode audio - sync it in
davinci resolve or tentacale sync app (automatically erases the timecode
audio when syncing to video) then importing it back into whatever your
using. Go pro's would be recording timecode through their audio tracks too.

Can anyone test this or tell me why it wouldn't work?

Best,
Luke

Re: [Sursound] Tetra and Go Pro

2016-05-20 Thread Barry Butler
I didn't ask my question properly I think; if I use the Core Tetra to record
surround sound for what the camerman is hooting with the VR GoPro 6
surround unit. What medium do I use to record the channels from the
Tetra, and how do I merge the two, my audio to his video?
thanks

Re: [Sursound] Tetra and Go Pro

2016-05-20 Thread Steven Boardman
Any digital recorder that has matched preamps. I use a zoom f8, and a motu
4pre, with a windows tablet for binaural decodes.
To dub the audio to the video, one needs know how will be shown? Different
formats use different systems. Otherwise for Google 360 use jump inspector
guidelines, as previously mentioned.

I have an H6, and a Focusrite 8, so they'd be fine for the recording. How
does the tablet fit into the grand scheme of things?

Much appreciated

Hi Barry,

Here's a Facebook group that has a lot of info about what you are asking,
and many location sound recordists are participating and sharing their best
practices.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/positional.audio.in.vr/

Best of luck,

Re: [Sursound] Tetra and Go Pro

2016-05-20 Thread Steven Boardman
You don’t need a tablet, I just sometimes take it to monitor the tetramic
binaurally if not in the field, and space and weight isn’t a problem.
I don’t think you can gang the preamps of the H6 or Focusrite, so you may have
to record a test tone on each channel and match in post.
It’s really important that all the gains are the same, otherwise you will lose
some spatial accuracy.
Digitally controlled preamps are better for this, as it’s easier to match
during the record. The MOTU 4pre has digitally controlled preamps. They are not
gangable, but I can quickly adjust all four pots to the same setting quickly.

I hope this helps

Steve
