Bill,

I was expecting that Firefox would not attempt to play the file at all ...
strange that it attempts to play the file at all.

What happens if you go to this URL in firefox:

http://audio.soundofspace.com/ajh/eight-directions.ac3

Re: [Sursound] online multichannel release: HTML5 test

2011-11-27 Thread etienne deleflie
I've now replaced the AC3 with a 5.1 Ogg Vorbis file.

http://soundofspace.com/static/test_html5.html

Firefox now reads it. Unfortunately, Firefox apparently cant play 5.1 files
... so it just plays the first two channels. Rather disappointing ...
especially given that Chrome seems to be able to play the 5.1 Ogg file just
fine.

Here's the Firefox Bugzilla report (lodged in 2009) about firefox not being
able to play 5.1 Vorbis files:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=521615

So the best bet is just AAC.

It plays fine in the current version of Opera on Windows 7 x64 (I haven't
tried to see which codec it's using, and I haven't told my system anything
about surround, so it plays in stereo).

Re: [Sursound] online multichannel release

2011-11-27 Thread Oliver Oli
I don't understand the long discussion on this list. quad surround is
a standard supported by many audio codecs. mp3 is not an option, even
mp3 surround is not discrete 5.1. the most common formats for
multi-channel audio are aac, ogg/vorbis and flac. the default aac
mapping for 4 channels is not quad, but center, left, right, rear
surround, but there should be ways to define it as quadraphonic. in
flac and ogg/vorbis a 4 channel file is defined as quadraphonic with
the channel mapping front left, front right, rear left, rear right.

I don't know how good the support for quad playback in the most common
media players is, but there are not much options besides aac, vorbis
and flac that are commonly supported.

I don't see the player in webos, because the browser doesn't show any
default controls (but audio and video with custom controls work). my
tablet wouldn't play surround sound, but I was interested if it plays
embedded 5.1 files at all.

you can offer multiple formats in an audio or video tag.

Thanks to all !

The code in the first post of *this* thread is actually
the corrected version of the algorithm defined in ISO
9613-1, you can ignore the warning.

The change only affects results for non-standard
ambient pressure.

Ahh!
That's nice!
It asks if I want to play with VLC and then it sounds very nice even in stereo (which is
all I have on my pc).
I actually get a strong sense out to about 180 deg either side of me whereas my (cheap
studio reference) monitors are either side of my screen. (all the physical space I
have). About 70 deg apart.

[Sursound] Greetings (and a newcomer's first submission)

2011-11-27 Thread Eric Carmichel
Greetings to all:
I am an Audio Production Technology student in the USA. I am also a hearing
scientist with a few modest credentials under my belt. I am, however, new to
Ambisonics.
I have been an audio enthusiast for most of my life. My current research
interests include cochlear implants and the possibility of creating
“real-world” virtual listening environments for studying hearing aid and
cochlear implant efficacy in a variety of noisy and moderately quiet
environments.
I see the potential of Ambisonics as a research tool for my research and
hearing scientists in general; consequently, I created a new website =
cochlearconcepts.com. Ambisonics isn’t nearly as well known in the US as it is
in Europe--at least this is my perception. I have communicated with Bengt-Inge
Dalenbäck (CATT-Acoustic) and Dr. Pauli Minnaar (Oticon)--both of them kindly
directed me to useful resources.
My first project is to record restaurants and coffee houses using a Core Sound
TetraMic and then play these back through an 8-speaker, horizontal-only
circular configuration (r = 1.4 m). I could just as easily stagger the speakers
so that they provide both vertical and horizontal information (would this be an
efficient use of eight speakers?). I plan to decode the raw (A-Format files)
via VVMic software (along with the calibration files provided with my
TetraMic), and then process the B-format files offline using MATLAB. My
preferred DAW for the Windows OS is Nuendo.
My new website (www.cochlearconcepts.com) shows a portion of my research
arsenal. My loudspeaker inventory consists of ten carefully matched KRK passive
monitors (they are the older KRK speakers using Focal woofers). I have an
Edirol/Roland R-4 Pro four-track digital recorder for live recording, and a
MOTU 896HD interface for playback. Because I am new to Ambisonics, any
critique, leads to resources, and “moral support” are welcome.
Many thanks for your time: I appreciate your taking the time to read this.
Kind regards,
Eric

Well, the TetraMic is giving you three-dimensional info and your are
reproducing in 2-D.

The TetraMic (or any common ambisonic mic, for that matter) is
only giving you first order ambisonics.
Four loudspeakers should be enough to reproduce that in a
horizontal plane (pantophony).
Some users say that six speakers give them a better result ...

Eight speakers (arranged in 3-D) can give you full 3-D (periphony)
on first order material.

My bias is to go for height.
Even with four speakers, I like to experiment with four frontal
speakers (UL, UR, DL, DR) sometimes but I think that is a
very personal 'bias' ;-)>
The mechanics of creating cubes (or cuboids) is considerably
different from creating horizontal rigs, though.

You will hear some good science on this list.
You will also hear much personal opinion.
Pay attention to the former and join the latter by experimenting
yourself!

Best wishes for your project,

Michael

The difference between 4 or 6 for 1st order horizontal is
a matter of debate/taste, but 8 is probably too much.

As Michael points out, you can have 3-D first order with
8 speakers, either a cube or one of the bi-rectangle
layouts. If you are going to reproduce only 1st order
material I'd certainly recommend one of those over using
8 speakers for horizontal only.

Re: [Sursound] Greetings (and a newcomer's first submission)

2011-11-27 Thread Newmedia
Eric:

As others have mentioned, a hexagon often does a better job of reproducing
the 2D "ambience," as I discovered when I started experimenting with
Ambisonics at sports-car races.

If you really want to be "surrounded" you can even get to a compelling
experience of 3D with a Tetramic -- my preference is for 2x "squares" with one
horizontal and another vertical and you sitting in the middle. This works
better than a "flat" cube in my own experiments. So, instead of having 4x
speakers "down" and 4x "up," there are 4x in the normal plane and 2x each
on the floor and the ceiling at the "side" positions.

All that said, you will NOT be happy with the "stage" that any of this
presents. If there is actually a "focus" of the sound, like for a
performance, for instance, then you will have to ADD "stereo" to the mix.

Since one of the most compelling "stereo" setups is called Ambiophonics,
adding that to 3D Ambisonics = Robin Miller's HSD-3D and it is *really*
satisfying for the right material!

if you do a 'view source' you'll see that I'm offering 3 formats ... AAC,

AAC is certainly an excellent codec; but can you easily play back a quad
file...? I really don't know.

I DO know VLC plays DTS straight out of the box.

re licensing, you buy the encoding app and you're done. Again, with AAC
I don't know.

So there's the simple, known-to-work; and the possibly-better,

So it does! DTS file in VLC, Metric Halo 2882 (or WHY) and streaming surround

Excellent - thanks, Richard.

DiscWelder Bronze will do the encoding; nice and cheap, too.

The only issue with DTS files is that they are large ... and so not so good
for online distribution.

An advantage you get with DTS files is you can burn Audio CDs that are
readily decodable by most DVD players

I think VLC will play almost all of the well known 5.1-ish formats ... but
it has to be downloaded and installed.

AAC is supported in both the main OSes bundled browser Safari and IE9
+ ... its easy to route channels to a soundcard in OSX ... but I'm not so
sure about Windows + IE9 routing multi-channel AAC to a soundcard ...
that's what I would like to hear about.
