I've now replaced the AC3 with a 5.1 Ogg Vorbis file. http://soundofspace.com/static/test_html5.html
Firefox now reads it. Unfortunately, Firefox apparently cant play 5.1 files ... so it just plays the first two channels. Rather disappointing ... especially given that Chrome seems to be able to play the 5.1 Ogg file just fine.
