[RE-wrenches] Battery Backup for Older Enphase Systems

2017-11-09 Thread Matt Sherald
I'd appreciate some ideas as to what backup system designs work well with
the older Enhase equipment (M250/215 era).

I've tried this at home with a XW4024, but the frequency rise causes the
lights to flicker and it is awfully unpleasant.

A customer of mine has asked about backup to go with an array that uses
M250s and this prompted me to write.

Thanks in advance!

[RE-wrenches] ARE 110 Turbine Controller Alternative

2019-02-27 Thread Matt Sherald
 Greetings,

I have a customer whose ARE 110 voltage clamp has stopped working. I'm
looking for a work around. Has anyone been down this road before? If so,
I would like to hear what you've learned and maybe save myself some
mis-steps in the process. Many thanks!

[RE-wrenches] Bergey XL.1 HummmBuzzz

2019-09-30 Thread Matt Sherald
Friends,

I've exhausted the Bergey tech support expertise on this issue and I'm
hoping someone on the list may have a solution to share.
I have a customer with an older XL.1 on a tilt-up tower. The machine has
been in place since 2007. I've done some work to it over the years
including blades, yaw bearings, painting, slip rings, brushes, rectifier.
The machine/property has a new owner who finds the noise of the machine to
be objectionable. The original owner also noted the noise, but was not as
dogged about resolving it.
The noise is best described as a "hummbuzzz" and it happens when the
machine rpms have slackened and then begin to accelerate again. The
transition causes some kind of electrical harmonic that is not noticeable
once the rpms increase. So, if the machine furls out of a high wind and
the rpms drop then the noise begins as soon as it un-furls and the blades
begin to accelerate. The noise disappears as it comes up to speed.
This noise does not happen if the machine is allowed to run unloaded (with
the breaker in the off position).

Anyway, I'd sure appreciate any thoughts. Many thanks in advance!

[RE-wrenches] 600Vdc Transfer Switch Between Charge Controller and GT Inverter

2019-10-22 Thread Matt Sherald
Hi All,

I've been asked to review a GT-BBUS that was installed with a DC to AC
ratio of 2.14. The system owner is frustrated b/c his 9.2-kW of PV is
bottlenecked by an 80A MPPT (~4,300W). The inverter is a XW-5548 so there
is a second bottleneck to overcome even if an additional CC were added.

My inclination is to install a GT inverter for half the array and make a
separate point of connection. I have considered adding a transfer switch
on the PV conductors to allow the owner to toggle between this new GT
inverter and the existing CC. I thought that having the option would be of
benefit during extended outages with little sun.

I'd be curious to know if anyone has had to solve a problem similar to this
one and if they were able to find a suitable switch. To-date, I have not
located a good transfer switch or breaker assembly with handle-tie etc...
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

[RE-wrenches] Two MPPT Charge Controllers, One PV Circuit

2019-11-07 Thread Matt Sherald
Hi All,

I recently posted a request for suggestions regarding a 600Vdc xfer
switch. In the intervening time, I've been out to visit and review the
system in question and found that the original installer had been called
back and had added a second XW MPPT 80.

The installer did not run separate strings to each of the two MPPTs, but
instead they split the PV output circuit with split bolts and now feed the
two MPPTs from this splice. A Schneider tech whom I spoke with said that
this was a safety issue, but was unable to clearly explain why it posed a
danger. Can anyone lend some insight? I can imagine how the MPPT function
might be skewed, but the wire size of the feeders are adequate for the
combined current of the full PV array and the units are producing power.

[RE-wrenches] Enphase IQ and Schneider XW AC Coupling Performance

2020-06-11 Thread Matt Sherald
Friends,

About seven years back I connected a dozen M215 Enphase inverters to our
battery backup system at home (Schneider XW4024 with 370AH battery bank).
The result was something that I would never want to duplicate for a
customer owing mainly to the flickering of lights during the daytime when
the XW is shifting frequency.

I'm curious if the newer Enphase IQ and Schneider XW equipment behave
better in an AC coupling scenario. Can the newer Schneider inverters cue
the micros to taper their output and are there any downsides to power
quality that the customer might notice during an outage?

Hoping to glean some real-world observations. Many thanks in advance!!

[RE-wrenches] SWWP Whisper 200 - Looking for a Short to Ground

2013-10-14 Thread Matt Sherald
I've got a Whisper that's not performing and I'm putting this out to the group
in hopes that someone has had a similiar dilemma.

My line to line voltage measurements are the same between the three phases.
However, my line to ground measurements are consistent across only two of the
phase-ground combinations. The third phase appears to be shorting to ground.

I had the tower down and took the machine off to check the split bolt
connections at the top of the tower for wear/rubbing. The down tower wiring
checks out. I opened the wire access on the machine to double check wire
insulation and the wire nut connections. I unbolted the slip rings and checked
for any sign of a smoking gun there. Nothing jumped out at me during the
inspection and I'm curious if it might be in the spinner assembly.

With no tech support to turn to I am hoping that someone in the Wrench
community might have had a similiar conundrum at one time. I'd appreciate
hearing from you if you have.

Many thanks in advance.

Re: [RE-wrenches] SWWP Whisper 200 - looking for a short to ground.

2013-11-03 Thread Matt Sherald
Thanks to all who pitched in and responded to my request for help on the
Whisper!

Turned out that the problem lay in the down tower wiring. Two legs were
shorting to ground. Measuring the voltage of each leg to ground should have
provided me with 0V, but I was reading voltage to ground on two of the three
legs. I had checked continuity of the down tower wires to ground, but the
results did not highlight the presence of a short so I thought the cable was
good to go. It wasn't.
The short blew the Whisper Controller (as well as a second AMP meter that I had
installed). Those familiar will appreciate that we had an old Easy-Wire Power
System from World Power Technologies Inc. that we could pull out of retirement.
With a new cable and an old charge controller the Whisper is back in action.

Thanks to all for your time and suggestions!

Hi Ron, Alan, and everyone else...

There were good suggestions provided, so I didn't jump in. I was traveling
also, so got into this discussion late. But, I'm usually available (and
almost always willing) to provide whatever knowledge support I can for
Whisper products. Parts will be a problem, but I don't mind direct contact
if someone has questions about the turbines, setup and configuration,
troubleshooting, etc. So, feel free to make note of my direct, person
email address.

On a side note, in case anyone didn't hear, Xzeres purchased the IP and
rights to the Skystream turbine. They didn't inherit the warranties on
prior sales, but at least they have good support staff (like Therese, who
used to be the Senior Tech Support Rep at SWWP) and they have parts for
sale.

And, of course, Air support is available through Primus Wind Power.

For Whisper, your stuck with volunteer support... but I will try.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Split bolt

2014-06-25 Thread Matt Sherald
William,

We've mostly stopped using split bolts owing to the same trouble you've noted.
Stray wire strands can also be problematic. I try to use an insulated
tap/connector anywhere that a split bolt might have been used in the past. I
think the added expense is well worth it. I also think that proper torquing of
the wire connection is easier on something like an Ilsco ClearTap or similar.

Glad all ended well!

I've used aluminum perforated sheet metal in the past. It matches the
other aluminum on the ground mount and it can be zipped up with self
drilling screws. Looks pretty sharp when it is done - kinda like it was
meant to be there all along.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Lightning Strike Fries Array

2015-05-21 Thread Matt Sherald
Hi Wayne,

Several years back I had all sixteen SolarWorld modules on a tracker get
zapped. The two other trackers adjacent to this one had no damaged
modules. The same strike blew out the phone box at the end of the road
(some distance away).

The SolarWorld jboxes were all sealed with no way to get to the diodes.
The homeowners insurance covered the loss and I replaced the modules with
something similar (SW had since stopped manufacturing 175s). It would have
been nice to have had access to the diodes.

[RE-wrenches] AC-coupling Enphase/XW Causes Flickering of Lights

2015-09-21 Thread Matt Sherald
I wired an Enphase string into my critical loads panel at my shop. I was
curious to see how it would work as I have customers with Enphase systems
that occasionally contact me about adding a battery backup system.

Why do the fluorescent lights and LEDs flicker once the grid power is
dropped. The flicker seems to start as soon as there is enough sun to
power up a few of the micros (they don't even have to be making much power).

The shop is grid-tied with a XW 4024 for battery backup. Battery capacity
is 370Ah.

I'd love an explanation as to why this happens and if there is a way to
mitigate the flicker I would also love to hear it.

Many thanks!

Re: [RE-wrenches] SB -40 Wi-Fi

2016-12-19 Thread Matt Sherald
William,

I would ditto your comment about customers who are not adept at
computer/network/web being left out by a decision to remove the built-in
display. Wireless and networked systems always add a layer of complexity
to the installation and commissioning of a system. Setting this stuff up
is tedious and I'd argue that it provides limited value to the owner.

Less emphasis on WIFI connectivity and more emphasis on a useful built-in
display would be my wish for not only SMA, but all inverter
manufacturers. As an installer I greatly appreciate having a display that
conveys information helpful to understanding the operation of the system.

SMA dropped the ball by not providing a User Manual with their 40 series.
Try troubleshooting an error without the User Manual. Having all the info
in hand and on a screen in front of you makes life in the field a lot
easier. You definitely don't want to have to call SMA - that sucks up a
lot of time.

I have a couple of customers with Xantrex SW series inverters. These older
inverters have a built-in display with buttons that allow the installer or
owner to check system information and to program variables. I sure like
visiting these jobs and I've found that over-the-phone troubleshooting with
customers is pretty smooth. Anyway, I'd trade all the web connectivity and
wifi capability for a similar built-in display on today's inverters.

[RE-wrenches] Hydro Off-grid Battery Sizing

2017-04-26 Thread Matt Sherald
Good morning! I went to bed wondering if the off-grid battery bank sizing
rules that I use for PV systems hold true for hydro-based systems. I woke
up and I was still mulling this over.

My battery bank sizing standard is to use the method outlined in the SEI
Photovoltaics Manual. I would presume that since the charging source is
fairly consistent (day-to-day and hour-to-hour) that I could then reduce
the days of autonomy to 2-days.

I'm curious though if anyone has advice for sizing a battery bank for
hydro. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

[RE-wrenches] Puzzle: Dryer does not work during FXR battery charging

2020-08-15 Thread Matt Sherald
Hello All,

My curiosity was piqued by a recent customer complaint. I'm hoping someone
has bumped up against this issue before.

The customer has a OB FXR2812 and a 3,000W Honda gen.
Her gas clothes dryer runs just fine off the OB inverter.
It runs properly on the Honda gen (when the inverter is bypassed)
It will not run when the gen is on and battery charging is taking place.

All the other AC loads (including the washing machine) run properly during
battery charging with the gen.
The OB inverter replaced an old Trace unit. The dryer worked as it should
with the Trace during battery charging.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: [RE-wrenches] PV direct EV charging

2021-04-12 Thread Matt Sherald
Mac,

Our car gobbles 11,500W when it's plugged in to the grid. Even if we
reduced the charge rate it would still be a heck of a draw - the chargers
in the EVs are greedy. I'll be curious to hear if anyone has a solution,
but my bet is that you need to give the EV a deep well to pull from
(probably deeper than a battery bank or PV array can directly and
consistently satisfy).

[RE-wrenches] Optical Sensor for Wattsun Tracker

2021-12-29 Thread Matt Sherald
Hi Wrenches,

I have a customer in need of an optical sensor for their AZ-225 dual-axis
tracker. If you have a spare laying about and want to move it along please
contact me off-list.

I understand through the customer that sensor replacements from Wattsun are
available, but now require the replacement of the old dip-switch controller
in addition. This seems a bit pricey so I'm fishing for a less expensive
alternative.

Many thanks!!!

[RE-wrenches] Li Replacements for Lead-acid Bank

2022-06-10 Thread Matt Sherald via RE-wrenches
Hello Wrenches,

I've got customers with an ailing battery bank and I'm working to sketch
out a replacement plan. I'd like to offer them a Li option, but they have
a suite of older electronics and I'm writing to ask the list if anyone
feels like they've settled on a Li brand that works well with pre-Li
electronics. Glad for any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

The bank size is currently 1,110Ah/48V. The following electronics are
installed:
2008 OB VFX
2012 OB VFX
2008 OB MX60
2012 MS Classic X2

2008 OB Mate
2010 Trimetric

[RE-wrenches] Battery Monitor for Li

2022-09-02 Thread Matt Sherald via RE-wrenches
Hello Friends,

I have an off-grid customer for whom I recently installed some SimpliPhi
3.8kW batteries. This is an older system and it has a Trimetric battery
monitor that the homeowners have used for years to keep an eye on their
battery bank.

The SimpliPhi batteries appear to be working fine at the site, but the
homeowners feel uneasy b/c the Trimetric is reporting that they are
finishing each charging cycle with an amp-hour deficit. The voltage of the
SimpliPhi batteries indicate that they are getting fully charged and are
doing so fairly early in the AM (solar is the primary power source).

I've spoken with SimpliPhi tech folks and their hunch is that the Trimetric
is not reporting correctly. They suggested that a Victron BMV-712 would be
more accurate at tracking Percent Full etc...

Do you folks think that the Victron is better at counting Ah in/out for Li
batteries? Or is the Trimetric adequate - do I maybe just need to adjust
the settings?

Anyway, the implication that the Victron BMV was better at monitoring Li
batteries has me curious and I will enjoy hearing what the group thinks.

Thanks for your time!

-Matt

Re: [RE-wrenches] Head scratcher

2022-10-18 Thread Matt Sherald via RE-wrenches
Hi Kris,

I think you want the "shore power" to feed into a 240V load center on the
tiny home. You might have to add this panel as part of the power inlet
equipment. I'd feed the minisplit off this 240V panel and subfeed 120V to
the AC IN on the inverter. In turn, the inverter can supply a load center
with 120V ONLY circuits.

[RE-wrenches] Attaching Array To or Through Ply

2023-03-29 Thread Matt Sherald via RE-wrenches
Hi All,

I've run into a roof-mounted job where the roof is built-up with the
following:

Comp shingle
Plywood
Foam board
T&G (roof deck, but also interior ceiling)

The beams that hold the t&g up are wide-spaced and not convenient for
fastening the full extent of the array.

This being the case, I was considering other fastening options and am
writing to pick the collective brain of the Wrenches to see how others have
addressed similar situations.

One thought I had was to use the PLP Easy Mounting Foot and I'd be glad for
any opinions on that or another solution.

Re: [RE-wrenches] OutBack inverter repair.

2024-04-17 Thread Matt Sherald via RE-wrenches
Hi Dave,

I sent an out-of-warranty GVFX to Outback late last year. I'd personally
replaced all three boards and still no joy.
The repair cost was reasonable ~$450, but UPS was a steep way to ship it.

[RE-wrenches] Grundfos SQFlex Pump Repair

2024-07-11 Thread Matt Sherald via RE-wrenches
Hello All,

I just replaced a customer's Grundfos 6-SQF-2. It had stopped pushing
water to their upper cistern.
A new pump solved the customer's problem, but I am curious if anyone has
had luck repairing a SQFlex pump or (better yet!!) knows of a service
center that could refurb a pump.?
The pump I removed did move a little water once I had it un-coupled from
the plumbing in the lower cistern spring box. It made a bit more noise
when operating than the new one which is incredibly quiet.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

[RE-wrenches] XW Pro and the spoiled stuff if the fridge

2025-06-18 Thread Matt Sherald via RE-wrenches
Hi All,

I'm writing to ask if anyone else might have run into a similar situation.
My customer came home to dead circuits after being out of town for several
weeks. They are grid-tied and have a BBUS with an XW Pro. Their PV array
is AC-coupled (Enphase IQ7+).

When they arrived home all of the critical load circuits were dead. The
other circuits were working fine. The internet router was dead.
I got called and made a visit. The XW was not feeding AC through to the
loads and it was not charging the batteries.

Two battery status lights on the XW were illuminated. A value "279" was
displayed. The small LED next to the "A" for charging was illuminated.
No other green LED was on - no AC1, no AC2, no Event, no Equalize . The
batteries had been discharged, but were well above the LBCO. I tested the
grid and it was 60Hz with 240V. All good there.

There is no SCP. This is one of the early installs with a Gateway and I
did not have computer stuff to get a look at any codes or other status
info.

Perplexed, and a bit frustrated, I turned off the main DC 250A breaker and
let it sit for a couple of minutes. Then I turned the breaker back on and
the XW worked just as one would hope - the grid connected through AC1 and,
in turn, powered the critical loads and began charging the battery.

I thought that I would be able to find some answers once things were back
online and I got home to the office where I could look at Insight and
Enlighten. Looking at the Enlighten data I could see that production had
ceased ten days prior to my visit.

Insight has no recorded Alarms/Warnings/Events for this time period.
The XW load and battery discharging data show very little draw throughout
the period which makes me believe the AC loads were not powered and the
battery drain was attributable to idle consumption of the XW, Gateway and
Battery Monitor.

A series of thunderstorms coincided with the loss of data reporting. The
neighbors, when asked, offered that they had lost an internet router to the
same storms. They said that they didn't recall a power outage, but their
router was cooked and their PV system (Enphase) had stopped working
requiring them to contact tech support.

My gut is that a surge on the Gateway's CAT cable triggered the XW's relays
to open and stay open. The system seems to be working just fine now and
doesn't appear to have suffered lasting damage. Not so for the venison in
the freezer.

I'd love to hear from anyone who may have had a similar experience with the
XW or who feels like they have a fair guess as to what caused the problem.

-Matt
