Re: [RE-wrenches] metering an outback system

2010-08-09 Thread Alex Cozine
When metering for production here in Washington State, we use both sides in
a 12s 120volt meterbase with fifth jaw. top right inverter ac in, bottom
right ac from grid. top left from battery back up, bottom left from
inverter ac in, fifth jaw neutral.

this set up allows grid tied selling and battery saved energy selling to be
metered while subtracting energy used to charge batteries and subtracting
any power needed to run the inverter.

hope this helps.

contact me off list if you need the diagram (in office)

Yes, you are correct. The Solar pro diagram and article is great for
understanding each mode the meter can be in.

Yes I have installed these modules. Yes they do have a proprietary racking
system. To buy these modules I believe the manufacture wants you to do
some onsite training to show you the ins and outs. Basically, its four foot
on center attachments to the racking put up loose until you add the module
to the racking frame. Then tighten down to move to the next module.

Are you planning a roof mount? metal roof w/ s5's?
or ground mount?

Check out my website to see some installations

think so. COntact them about it. Maybe they have offsite online training.
or they would work with you if you show them your previous work. They
don't sell to distributors so they have to weed out who can buy and install
their modules. I'm almost sure they would work with you. Call them up.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Gross PV production meter options

2011-12-06 Thread Alex Cozine
Ditto Larry's link:
1 turns meter when PV power sold.
2 turns meter when Battery Power sold.
3 cancels turns when: pulling power to charge battery and using that
battery power for critical loads. (power used from grid is still accounted
for on the utility meter)

side note: for 120V output
you need 2 meters for 240 volt output (one for each output)

Good luck

2010-04-12 Thread Alex Cozine
I'm looking at TED 5002-c. The Energy Detective tech says that you can
monitor home usage as well as the inverter. It's sent to a transmitter and
wireless to your computer to view energy usage and inverter production.

Any experience with this product?

What types of home energy monitoring devices are others using out there for
their customers?

Explaining to the AHJ that it is ok to install enphase without rooftop disc

[RE-wrenches] Church Solar

2013-09-12 Thread Alex Cozine
I ask, WWWD,

what would wrenches do for church/school installations in respect to
federal/production incentives specifically at churches and schools?

One person champions the federal tax incentive?
A "corporation/congregation" owns the proposed system?
Each member of congregation owns a module?

Is there any way to have tax/production incentives at a church?

I agree, no bonding jumper from neutral to ground in a grid tied system
disconnect. It's not a Separately derived system by NEC definition. The
premises does have grid power and pv power, but they are from the same

Re: [RE-wrenches] Silicon Energy install steps?

Sunmodo in Vancouver WA makes a nice flashing with a 'C' foot that gives
room for trusses that aren't exactly 4' on center. Here's my salesman's
email if you want to see this foot, it isn't on the website at the moment.
gwin...@sunmodo.com

I agree with bclark. You have to snap lines and measure corner to corner
to get yourself as close as possible to perfect square so you give yourself
the best chance in getting the modules to slide up easily. Advice:
measure between "trays" or "slide channel" before bringing each module to
the roof. Ditto bclark to start with first column and work to next column.
East/West third party rails are often the solution to give a little play in
the installation.

That being said you must have your rubber mallet available for these
installations.

Good Luck, Silicon Energy is a great, robust product and worth any
difficulties that may come with the installation.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Two NEC questions

2012-10-13 Thread Alex Cozine
Rebecca,

First off, nice install on the four SiE pole mounts!

Second, as long as we are talking strictly grid-tied systems, not AC
coupled or battery backup, it seems like Solar should be viewed more like
an appliance. It supplements the service at your house. That being said,
you've got a tough battle ahead. Hopefully someone else on the list has a
great way of calming this inspector down with some good old code lullibies.

Good luck! Sometimes it feels like the Solar 'cops', I mean inspectors,
are trying to justify their jobs.

[RE-wrenches] Contract Examples

2012-10-24 Thread Alex Cozine
Although, not a specifically a wrenching question, writing solid paperwork
directly leads to turning the wrench.

I am looking to update my contract small print. I'm updating a contract
that has worked for 35 years, but it is highly reliant on a firm hand
shake, so to speak.

In summary, it contains; price, terms of payment, expressed warranty and
workmanship manner, not responsible for out of control delays, bid good for
30 days, extras billed on top of this contract, acceptor pays attorneys if
it has to go to court for any reason, service percentage for over due
balance.

Any suggestions or must-haves?
Anyone writing in consulting charges for "design rights", clause for if you
designed something unique for a customer someone else uses your design?
