[RBW] New Sam Auction Color
Holy Smokes! I think the Sam Riv is auctioning right now is the nicest color I've seen in a long time. It makes the single color paint job pop! [RBW] Repurpose old Wool?
Hey Group, I have some woolies that are too tattered to wear anymore. And please believe me when I say too tattered. Does anyone have ideas for how to use the wool from, say, a shirt or underwear for something else? I know how to sew, and I'm usually crafty about this stuff, but I can't seem to come up with much beyond making a hat, using them for patching other wool garments, or maybe arm warmers. [RBW] Durability and function
I don't care one way or another about the Carbon Fiber issue. But, in a recent thread I spotted this quote that I have been thinking about: .there is nothing wrong with steel bicycle frames or the people who ride them, like them, or make them. I just proposed to the frame builder list here that steel bikes must be considered as a fashion decision. This is not a put down at all. Lots to things from the past have value but are not very commercially viable. Vinyl records, film cameras, mechanical watches, steel bike frames all have their place with a small fanatic following." I don't know about "Fashion Decision," but I have vinyl records that are 50+ years old that still play great. I had an Ipod that sh@t out on me after being left in the cold and CD's that skip even though I try to take good care of them. My film camera has been repaired and should last another 20 years hopefully, yet my first digital camera didn't last two years. I have a tube guitar amp that sounds fantastic that is 40 years old and has been repaired. My pops recently left me his 1928 Gibson mandolin that was once run over by a car (the headstock needed repair) that sounds better than any mandolin I've ever heard. These things are metaphors for handmade steel bicycle frames I suppose. But I hope that in fifty years my Sam Hilborne (yet to be delivered) will be around with the mandolin and tube amp. [RBW] Re: 2 top tubes - Y2TT plus (at the end of it) divisive cultural reference
I got the quote, and I'm 29. My 2TT hillborne showed up last week. Placed the order in March. I can't stay off it. One note: In pictures the 6 degree top tubes look pronounced, but when not seeing the bike from a parallel photograph, but from a real life angle (standing, not squating) it is tough to notice a huge slant. Plus, when riding you don't see the slant or the undertube. These things seem much more of a concern with those that like to sit on a bench and admire their bikes, or photograph them I suppose. But in real world riding the bike feels tough and stiff and super duper awesome. I hope this bike takes me everywhere for a ton of years. I am super hard on my stuff and the 2nd TT was a selling point for me in hopes it will help with longevity. Anyway, I'm very happy. Three other notes: My Waterford Hillborne came with a rear brake hanger on the frame. I wasn't expecting that. Also, they threw in a bottom bracket that I didn't ask for or know was coming. Very cool. Last, the front dropouts are the same as the Hunq and Simpleone, not like the earlier hillbornes, I think. Looks like devil horns. I likes it. Oh sure. The splats will work as "windbreakers" for your sandaled feet. Waxed canvas is windproof. Plus with woolie socks you'll be good to go for a mild winter climate. [RBW] Broken Rail on a Brooks
Hey Gang, My bike has felt extra bouncy lately. Filled up the tires today and they were low. Still bouncy. Looked at my brooks saddle rails and one of them is broken. Looks like it has been that way for a little while, too. So, good news is that the other rail is strong, bad news is its broken. This saddle has 10,000 plus miles easy. Lots of touring time. So, I don't want to replace it because the top is so perfectly broken in, and there is a ton of nose bolt left. I know I can get a replacement frame from Wallingford ($31), or I can have my roommate weld it for me and see how that holds up. The saddle is not under warranty (about 5 years old or so). So my question is if any of yall have welded a busted rail or replaced a frame? Tips? Hints? Make me feel better cuz I'm a bit bummed (pun?) about this. [RBW] Re: Handlebar Bag on 60 cm Sam Hillborne
Go with a loafer and a bar tube combo. easy. I know the boxy bag is pretty, but I didn't like it. Prefer a bar bag with straps. [RBW] Re: Should I fret over crashed h'bars?
If you have the bucks for a new set of bars and tape to not be a huge deal, then do it to save you the fretting. I would probably hang them over a beam above me, grab the drops and apply my body weight to them slowly. Depending on how much you weigh, you may even hang on em. Hey Eric, I had a set of these tires for commuting and a long tour and was super happy with them. NO flats and they lasted quite a long time--I think they are still on a friend's bike now. They are heavier than Paselas, but whatever. I stopped using Paselas entirely after two sidewall failures in a week, one on tour no less. They do run small. The 37mm measured out to 32ish I think. I have a pair for summer road rides that are 28's and they measure to 25ish I think. Too skinny for me. In fact, if you want them let me know! I guess I didn't notice what Jon experienced with the sluggishness, more than likely because I am sluggish myself. Oh, I can't wait until the snow melts and I can ride smooooth tires again! Get tougher tires! Or, cut off the back of the fender and make a long mudflap. Or, put a big saddlebag back there for soaking up the rain and grime. That's what I do. [RBW] Re: Please bring back the MUSA saddle cover
Yeah, I stopped using the aardvark after losing it somwhere in Oregon on a bike tour. Not real pleased. In the end a thick plastic bag is the best cover, free, and easily replaceable. I made an indestructable saddle cover out of a scrap of boat sail material with grommits punched in and a piece of cord to pull it snug at the seat post. Totally waterproff, ugly as sin, and boomproof. If you live near water with any sort of sailing community, find a sail shop and ask for some scraps and make one. MUSA! [RBW] Re: Please bring back the MUSA saddle cover
No sewing. Just cut it and hammer the grommets. You don't even need the grommets. Just poke some holes and put a piece of cord through them. I added a toggle to cinch it up. I really want to get a tiny little dock cleat and attach it to my seat post collar and tie it down that way. Super cute. [RBW] Re: WTB: Cylinder shaped dummy levers
These seem like they should be easy to make. I'd say go to your lbs and ask for a couple lengths of scrap steer tube cut from a 11/8" fork, then two endcaps. Then take two brake bands from old parts brakes and run the bolt through the endcap into the brake bands and tighten. You may want to file groves into the back of the tubes to make them fit onto the handlebar. I think I'll try this over the winter as a weekend project. Good use of short lengths of leftover clothtape. [RBW] Re: wimpy cassettes and chain rings
Yeah, I'd say make sure you check your chain-stretch once a month. Some chains stretch really fast on me and if I don't keep up I will wear down the drive train. I haven't used it, but it is a steal price wise. Unlike other boxyish bags, it doesn't need a rack or any special hardware, which should always be accounted for in the price of a bar bag. [RBW] Re: VO Campagne handlebar review?
I sold mine shortly after buying it. The canvas was thin and didn't look up to the abuse I dish. The leather was also not super thick and the stitching didn't look great. It also wasn't tall enough for my bike either. It is a nice size for a front bag. The price seems good, until you factor in the additional stuff needed to run it properly-- rack, decaleur, extras if you want to swap bikes with it. I am way happier with my acorn hobo that I've had for years now. Gone on a bunch of long tours with it and can't complain. I'd go with the brand v boxy or bar tube if you already have a saddlebag. Keep a woolie and some food and maybe a camera up front. Also, I like zippers better than elastic straps when on the move. Whatever, just an opinion. I really wanted one of the plaid hobo bags and by the time I had the money, they were gone. I'm thinking in the spirit of the new Reader piece on the spoke that broke and landed in a chain link. Here's mine: (not super strange, but whatever) I parked my bike in front of the English building where I was teaching for the day. There was a huge ice storm and when I came out my bike was a block of ice. I actually really enjoy this because I get to kick off big chunks of ice to free everything up. Anyway, I start riding and am going down a big hill that I always shift into my big ring for and snap! my Front changer broke off. I guess it was a little too frozen. It wasn't even that old. I loosened up the little cage bolt, slid it out from the chain, and rode home in the middle ring. I kept it for a while to show people, but realized fast that nobody much cared and tossed it. I also had an old Suntour rear changer explode on my way to the grocery store once. I gathered the pullies, but couldn't find the bolts. Got home using wire twist ties from the produce section as temp "bolts" that didn't work so well, but I got home! [RBW] For sale/trade
Hey all, Thought I'd see if anyone out there was interested in a few things I have taking up space. -Nitto Rando Bars 45cm. I mounted these, taped em up with cloth, rode a 70 mile day with them and took em off. They didn't agree with my elbows. So, they have 70 miles on them. Not a scratch or tape residue. These are going for around $45 new these days on the internets--I'd love to trade them for a medium shop sack (canvas, not grid) if anyone has one. If not, how's $30 shipped? If you've noticed, Nitto stuff is getting more and more expensive. --Nitto Promenade bars. Nothin too fancy. Nice upright city bars. Mountain levers and shifters only. A scratch here and there. $20 shipped. --MKS Leathered Half-Clips Large. These were too small for my feet. So they were on my bike to the end of the street and back. Still brand new, and I didn't treat the leather. Would be great on a classy Betty Foy. These have gotten pricey too. 25 bones last I checked. How about $12 Shipped. --Sugino XD-2 crank arms 175mm. I have these left over from when I switched my bikes over to 170 arms. They are used and have the beusage to prove it. But with these cranks, a few scratches don't mean a thing. Super awesome, just don't use the longs anymore. I'd love to trade for a pair of the same arms but in a 170mm. If nobody has those to trade, how about $40 shipped. --Okay, last one is a long shot I think: Velo Orange Champagne Handlebar Bag. So I received this as a Christmas gift. I really wanted a bag like this for a long time. I have been using an Acorn Hobo and thought I would like this style bag better. Well, I don't it turns out. I haven't ridden much with this bag and it shows zero wear from use (it's essentially brand new). I treated the leather bits and installed a Decaleur mount to it. I will include two 1 1/8" headset mounts for this bag as well. I would love to trade for a Sackville Trunksack Small (front lil loafer). But if that doesn't work, how about $90 shipped with all the extras. Scott -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Touring Advice Offered
I've toured quite a bit and have only one issue that I haven't figured out. Maintaining my chain on the road. My chain and rear changer get crazy dirty and mucky and overall junky. I bring a rag and lube and try to remember to clean the chain often, but once in camp the hunger usually sets in and I forget in the seting up and relaxing. So, what is the secret magic trick--and if you say just clean and lube every day I'll be a bit red in the face. Jim, It made me chuckle because my mind could only think of "Park Tool Blue" as the color it would be dipped in, and I imagined a big blue rubbery basket in my sightline while I'm riding down the road. [RBW] Re: racks vs. paint
I'd say sell it and buy a Pletscher rack--the old silver kind--for next to nothing. These are the best saddlebag racks ever and usually can be found for free in a junk box.I have an expensive nitto rack that is going to be sold because it was on a bike that only gets saddlebagged, and the pletscher works just as well--and I think it looks fantastic. However, if you are using heavy panniers, then you will need to consider options 1 or 3. Hey everyone, I noticed yesterday that Duluth Pack is making bike bags again. Panniers, a bar tube, and a hobo--but the hobo is set up to be a saddle bag instead of a bar bag. [RBW] Re: What panniers are these?
That is a bummer as there aren't really any canvas panniers on the market right now. The Berthouds are too expensive for me. The Carradice panniers are available in England, but I'm not totally excited by the Super C bags. Ostrich looks nice, but availability? Minnihaha panniers look like they might not hold up on a tour or to time for that matter. Frost River is gone. What else is there? Acorn mentioned something on the horizon. Velo Orange plans on something. But the market is pretty dead right now. There are a number of small operations around the country sewing handmade messenger bags and cycling caps that seem to do good business in that niche, so I wonder why very few have turned to traditional bicycle luggage. Acorn has to stop taking orders in under two days now the orders come so briskly, and they manage to keep their prices very low and quality very high, in my opinion, so I guess the whole point to my little pannier rant is I hope some other options present themselves. [RBW] Any inside information on the new Sackville Bags?
I recall reading in November that the Sackville Bags should be arriving anytime. Does anyone have any insider news on these bags? I know the norm is that things get delayed and patients is the best approach to fine things, but I was just wondering if anyone knew anything. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Any inside information on the new Sackville Bags?
And you made fun... Bag News February 2, 2009 Just a quick note-- We're introducing a new line of bags: Sackville (after the famous town in Canada). They should be called Blackville, because they're black. We'll have pixup on the site in a week or less, and if you've room for another bag in your life, they're worth a look or even a long, creepy stare. They're different from anything we've done before, and I think they'll be tough to equal. They're made by a small company comprised of former Coach and Dooney&Bourke workers who lost their jobs when those companies went to China. The first two bags will be the SaddleSack-Large and the SadleSack- Medium. The large is quite monstrous, but carries weight great. The Medium is more normal, about like a Carradice Nelson Longflap. There have never been better-made bags than these; and the design is good, too. Watch the site in the next week or so, and we'll have them up. Delivery, end of Feb/early March. The big one is $200; the medium, about $175. [RBW] Anyone wanna swap?
Hey All, I was wondering if anyone wants to swap an XD-600 (XD-2) crank in 175mm arm length for the exact same crank with 170mm arms? Mine have the 46-36-26 rings, they are 3 years old, the logo is worn off, but they aren't all scratched up, and the rings have a lot of life left in them. These cranks will last a long, long time. Anyway, I have 175's on all my bikes right now and I've been doing a lot of 100 mile plus rides lately and would like to try riding with shorter arms on at least one bike, but alas, I don't have the money to sink into a new crank right now. Hence the swap idea. Hopefully someone is interested. If you have something that isn't exactly the same, but comparable, let's talk. [RBW] Re: Wanted 68cm Quickbeam
Ryan, You could always turn the Mark N. Custom into a singlespeed. Use a White Industries ENO hub if it has vertical dropouts. If it is a country bike, than it is prolly pretty close to a quickbeam. That said, I hope you find a megahuge quickbeam! Scott P.S. Would you mind linking to a picture of the 73cm Mark N.? I'd love to see a bike that tall. [RBW] Re: OT(ish): Is there such thing as a modern mixte touring bike?
Handsome She-Devil. Wrong headset. And you dont need low-rider mounts to use a low-rider rack. Clamp it. Origin8 has a sub 200 dollar mixte frame and fork called the Mixer that shops can get. ALso, if you don't want to spend much money at all, your local craigslist probably has 50 old mixtes on there right now (depending on where you live). Many Raleigh's, Motobecane's (both french and english threaded so beware), and every once in a while an elusive Trek 420 Mixte. You will be able to sqeeze some decent rubber on there. I put 37 pasela's and fenders on an ex-girlfriend's motobecane. Just a thought. On May 19, 2:08 am, "Rob H." wrote: > I believe Velo Orange is starting to design another Mixte bike. [RBW] Re: Packing the Sackville Shopsack
I hadn't noticed they were gone! this bag is so perfect! I would never sell mine ever. I always overfill mine and when I used to only have one net for two bikes and would forget to transfer it, I simply tied the handles in a knot to keep everything in there. Works great. S. [RBW] Best Rack for a large saddlesack on a large frame?
My wife and I are bringing back the older Riv notion of putting a cheap Pletscher mousetrap rack on nice bikes. I find them for a buck at garage sales or flea markets.
