[RBW] Re: When is a bike to heavy?
I can only add that the single most accomplished cyclist I know rides a 45+/- lb bike, when outfitted with empty bags and racks. This fella has ridden across or around every continent on the planet, except for the really cold one. I am not sure if that helps, but I keep it in mind when I start considering how much stuff weighs. [RBW] Re: Crappy Pasela Sidewalls
I once ran over an empty vodka bottle and tore open the sidewall, and tube, of a brand new Pasela, non TG, 28. It is the only catastrophic sidewall failure (30 years) that I can't at least partially attribute to age. In all seriousness, the Pasela sidewalls seem to be about as tough as other nice riding and rolling road tires. This means that they are woefully inadequate as a 'trail' tire in this neck of the woods. I have ridden pretty much everything, and more than a few times, in the area of Riv HQ. The conditions there are very much different than here. They (paselas) were always good enough for light trail duty in the area of Riv HQ. I expect any urban environment would chew them up pretty quick. Kenda Comforts are worth a look, IMO. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Crappy Pasela Sidewalls
Steve - Then I can only add that YMMV. For me they are no better at defeating the urban track than , say, Conti GP3/4000s - in 28s. And less than Conti Gator Skins - also in 28s. Beyond that, who knows..maybe random acts of whoknowswhat, and other stuff too. I didn't say I didn't like them, but they have been tender for me, that's for sure. Sliced treads too. I do like the price when on sale. Dan Gee - I ride them at about 70 PSI, and the Contis mentioned at about 95. But I ride the Kenda Comforts, and other tires at 50ish. All of cycling is really just a long continuum, but marketing people want to focus us on a 'new' thing, which is really just a part of the continuum that was always there. Rarely, in cycling and most everywhere else, is something really 'new'. To me, personal watercraft were 'new'. At least until I looked into the other sorta similar water born personal propulsion thingamabobs. But to me, they were new. So maybe to some a 'gravel' bike will also be new. That said, bigger tires are good, and drop bar bikes that can ride in the dirt are good. So where's the rub? Well, to me the rub is that marketing can serve to divide people into segments, or boxes, rather than to promote the bigger truth, which is that were all just part of one big continuum. I add to the already long list of cycling descriptors...'Gravel Guy/Gal'. As in.. Dude: 'You ride?' Dudette: 'Yep, sure do.' Dude: 'Whatcha into?' Dudette: 'Is that a trick question?' Dude: 'Naa, just wondering what kind of riding you do.' Dudette: 'Ahh, I'm a Gravel Gal.' Dude: 'Oh, so you like to get dirty.' Dudette: 'Go away!' Re: [RBW] Happy Holidays! Any Surprise Bike Treasures?
Hey All, My first MTB was a mid 80s lugged stumpy (the orange one). I rode it for over twenty years before a frame builder friend told me that the stress waves in the top and down tube were serious enough that I should retire the frame. So I did, and bought a Ritchey (which my wife uses as her uppity townie - if there can be such a thing - more on that later). At any rate, I have been looking for another ever since and finally grabbed one off of the local CL. It's a lil rough, but serviceable, and will be my new workhorse (shopper, pull a trailer) townie. It will replace a mid 90s steel Rockhopper I bought years ago, also off the local CL. And about the Ritchey. When my wife and I became engaged I offered her in lieu of a ring any bike she wanted (we meet on a group ride). She responded, 'I'll take the Ritchey, and a ring'. So it really is hers because she did indeed marry me. She is a shrewd one that gal. [RBW] Re: 1 bike? Could you do it?
Hey All, I have long tried to get to one, but have not, since the mid 80's. In the wonderful collection of characters I know from riding there are several who seem to live with one consistently. The one who comes first to mind, for reasons unrelated, rides a Yeti MTB. He alternates between 700s with skinny tires and 26" with fat tires. Sometimes he shows up for a MTB ride on the skinny tires and still woops on everyone else. He is 6' 2" and about 180 lbs. with tens of years experience and no car for as long back as anyone can remember. There is a lesson in there somewhere, I think. On a side note. This last Thanksgiving, this same fella wanted to go visit his family in Southern Oregon, so he rode his bike from Redding, Ca.(more than 80%) off road. Last Spring he rode from Redding to the coast (almost) entirely off road. There is lots more to say about this guy, but I'll leave it at that. [RBW] Re: Where to get a replacement old school MTB fork?
Hey Bruce, I have access to a pretty well stocked bone yard. I know there are a bunch of old school MTB forks in a pile. I would have to pay something for it, and then pay to ship, but I bet $20 would cover it, if you don't have a better option. You should expect some goofy color, and some nicks and scratches, but otherwise serviceable. Re: [RBW] I am a (sometimes) enthusiastic but mediocre bike mechanic
Hey Jay, It's been said already, but it bears repeating, IMOthis is how we all (for the most part) learn. I have a very clear memory of my Father saying to me..."I don't think bikes are supposed to require this much maintenance." I had finally bought a 'good' bike and I was enthralled. For me, if I wasn't riding it I was plenty happy to be caring for it. So now, I'm just about as fast (as a mech) as a fella can be, but there was a time when it took half a day to rebuild a bottom bracket and get it exactly right..you know, when you tighten the lock ring it moves the adjustable cup out just that little bit. And don't get me started on headsets! Enjoy the process, because some day it will be second nature and much of the fun will be gone. Thanks for sharing! Re: [RBW] Re: RivReviews
Howdy, First, not all customers are worth having. Next, who buys a Rivendell without having even enough info to know that Rivendell actually exists? Sounds more like a troll than anything else. Give me my money back or I'll sue? Who would he sue if Rivendell doesn't actually exist? If they exist enough to be sued then they exist. Ergo, he knows they exist and is being weenie-ish. I probably didn't say that as eloquently as I might have, but I think the point is clear enough. Unfortunately cycling is not immune to the weenies of the world. Re: [RBW] Staff Bikes - Mark's Bontrager
Hey All, My 12 year old son rides a Bontrager MTB. He has no clue how 'cool' it really is. And we are going to keep it that way. No need to feed that kind of thinking. His latest thing? Nike shoes. [RBW] Re: A bike to grow old with?
Hey Mark, Well, first, you found something special here. I hope you grow to understand and appreciate that as much as I do. Next, I can't possibly climb inside your head and know what is right for you. But I can say that if that was the choice I was making at this moment I would choose an Atlantis, and likely somewhat custom (maybe setup for IG, and maybe even discs). Others have said something similar, so I'm just another voice among the many. Oddly, that same bike would not be my choice given my current circumstances (many years from retirement, and a very uncertain future). So maybe the best I can do is suggest that the realities of one's place in the timeline of their life should at least inform the choice. But I bet you knew that. [RBW] Re: Straight TT vs angled TT
Hey All, I mention this because nobody else has...yet. Maybe never, which would mean that I am alone on this one, but here goes. One of the things I have noticed as TTs have become angled is that they are less comfortable to lean up against. Too much slope and you end up on the seat, which is a totally different arrangement. I like them flat, or nearly so. And don't get me started on where to put the cable guides All the best, Chris Redding, Ca. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Fancy Hub Conundrum: Chris King vs. White Industries vs. Hope
DT Swiss, in particular the 240s, are the best hubs out there. I mention them because no one else has. Otherwise, the others mentioned are nice, in their own ways. No need to clog up the thread with details about the 240s, since the OP didn't ask about them, but if anyone wants to hear the 'whys' of my opinion, off list maybe. Re: [RBW] Re: Fancy Hub Conundrum: Chris King vs. White Industries vs. Hope
The only DT Swiss hub that uses a pawl system is the 370, and it's at least as reliable as any Shimano pawl system. The star ratchet that the 240 uses is quiet (much more so than a CK) when properly maintained and can be next to silent if one uses a lil extra grease between the stars. And the reliability of the star ratchet system is on par with the reliability of a CK freewheel. There are other reasons to choose a DT Swiss hub over the others mentioned, like the use of ISO bearings. This is not unique, but CK uses proprietary bearings, so you gotta go back to CK for replacements. So the two best are the CK and the DT Swiss, with DT Swiss getting the nod from me for using ISO bearings, being 100% user serviceable, and having a bullet proof freewheel system that is easily made very quiet. But DT Swiss hubs ain't sexy pretty, and more or less only come in black. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Off-road tire recommendation?
The WTBs All Terrain, formerly the All Terainasaurus (sp?) are remarkably good at the 'one tire does all' thing. I would choose them, and in fact I do, for just what you describe. But tires are tough, so many variables, like track, conditions, riding style and rider competence.
