[RBW] FS: Saddlesacks/Banana Sack

2023-08-20 Thread johnb
I have 2 Small Saddlesacks in grey grid and 1 Banana Sack in green. All are
in good condition. I am selling them because my bikes are 51/52 and they
just don't fit without rubbing. One of the Saddlesacks has some tarnish on
some of the buttons (you can see it in the pictures.) Pricing is:
- Saddlesack (Tarnish) - $40
- Saddlesack - $50
- Banana Sack - $40

Shipping is extra. I prefer Priority Mail but am flexible.

2024-04-16 Thread johnb
Measurement from center of BB to top of TT is 20". Center of BB to top of
Seat Tube is 20.25". Same for TT. I apologize for the confusion. I bought
the bike 3rd hand and never measured it. I just took the sellers word and
quite honestly I could have just misremembered it. I am 5'6" with a 28"
inseam. I have Compass 650Bx48 tires on the bike and I barely clear the TT..

I forgot the Crank Brothers Stamp pedals.

inseam. I have Compass 650Bx48 tires on the bike and I barely clear the TT.

[RBW] Re: Grant refers to this helmet guy for some reason

2011-03-16 Thread johnb
Jan,

I think a objective view (as much as that can be accomplished) would
be interesting. I always look forward to the magazine, read it cover
to cover, and even if I don't agree with you I enjoy the magazine
immensely. I personally thought the Tedx video was interesting, well
done even, and caused me to ponder the subject more. While it did not
cause me to stop wearing a helmet on my commute or fast rides, I will
admit that I do ride around the neighborhood <10mph without a helmet
when just on a Sunday 'stroll.' I will keep a note on squirrels going
forward though. Who knew?

@James, if you see Momentum in your local bike store. Do NOT look at
it. You are not going to like it...

[RBW] New Atlantis

2011-05-02 Thread johnb
So I pulled the trigger on Friday and purchased a new Atlantis. In my
extended conversations with Keven and Vince @ Rivbike, they were
encouraging me to think beyond Noodle bars and specifically to the
Albatross bar. I plan to use this bike for commuting to work on very
hilly terrain @ 8 miles each way, local bike rides of about 50 miles
on the weekend, supported and self-supported touring. I would truly
like for this bike to be a jack of all trades. I have an Albatross on
a QB that I ride to the store and like it quite a bit and I think it
would be great for commuting but am concerned with the longer rides
with this bar. Any experience with this set up? Anyone try to use two
different bars with quick connects for the cables (I saw one of these
on cyclofiend site and thought it was a brilliant idea)?

2011-05-04 Thread johnb
Thoughts on Cantilever versus V-brakes? I have a LHT with the Tektro
720s on it and I would not get them again. I feel they are difficult
to adjust and they are okay at stopping the bike.

Since this is a 50th b-day gift to myself, I have been looking at the
Paul brakes. Any experience with either the touring Cantis or the
Motolites?

[RBW] Re: wanted: anyone wishing to depart with 54 rambo or similar sport tourer/rando?

2011-05-09 Thread johnb
Joe,

Are you in a hurry? I am going to be posting my 54cm Rambouillet in
the next couple of weeks. I also am same height and have a 52cm QB.
The Rambouillet has S&S couplers and will come with the suitcase. It
is a custom blue and white color scheme (since I had to repaint after
the cut). The couplers were put in by Bilenky of Philadelphia. The
bike was bought brand new in 2006.

I have tried to love these shoes but they have not loved me back... So
$75/OBO + $10 to ship to CONUS and they are yours. I used them last
season for about 15 rides total.

[RBW] FS: 2006 Riv Rambouillet 54cm

2011-05-10 Thread johnb
As I noted in previous posts, I have recently purchased an Atlantis.
This is part of a goal to find a bike that handles my commutes and
touring well. Between my girlfriend and I we have seven bikes which is
more than I wish to maintain. So I am thinning my part of the herd.
Here is bike 1

2006 54cm Rambouillet (Coleman green formerly)
S&S couplers installed by Bilenky of Philadelphia
Custom paint
Completely stock build with the following exceptions
Silver sidepulls
Connex 920 chain
SRAM 11x32 rear cassette
Brooks handlebar tape
Acorn Roll bag with tool for couplers and any 700c tubes I have left
since I will no longer have any 700c bikes
Schwalbe Marathon Supremes 700x38 with about 200 miles on them (they
still have the center 'bead')
rear light
suitcase and packing tubes plus printed instructions on how to get the
bike into the suitcase.

It does not come with the Brooks saddle. This baby is perfectly formed
to my butt.

There are a couple of minor paint dings that I have tried to capture
in the pictures. The chain became jammed between the chain stay and
the inner cog once and chewed up the paint in there pretty good and I
tried to capture that as well. All spots have been touched up with
Testers paint that matches pretty well. I will add that to the
shipment.

The bike will ship in the suitcase and shipping should be around $90
on UPS.

Here are pictures -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jbusteed/sets/72157626694043428/

Please let me know if you have any questions.

[RBW] FS: 2009 52cm Quickbeam

2011-05-17 Thread johnb
As part of the pruning of the bicycle collection, I am selling a two-
year old Quickbeam. Atlantis less than six weeks away...

Photos are http://www.flickr.com/photos/jbusteed/sets/
72157626621477823/">here.

Here is a link to the QB's geometry - http://cyclofiend.com/rbw/geometry.html
(Note they do not show the 52) My PBH is 78cm and this bike fits quite
nicely with the Col de Vies on it. While I would be happy to measure
the basics and you can ask me nitty gritty questions like what is the
head tube angle but I may not be able to provide the answer...

Again, it is a stock build (you would think after last week's sale I
would know exactly what is on the bike but no...)

Specs:

- 52cm frame
- Sugino XD2 crank set (40x32)
- White Industries Duo (17x19)
- Velo-Orange hammered fenders
- Col de Vie tires
- No saddle
- Grip King pedals
- Silver brakes
- Albatross bars/cork grips/Mt Bike brake levers
- Nitto stem (10cm?) /seat tube
- Mark's rack/basket

Price: $1200/OBO + shipping unless you are local to Baltimore/DC.

Bike will move to Craigslist in Baltimore on Thursday evening.

Bike has never been in an accident. Was ridden maybe 2K miles total
(550 in one week in NC in 2009). As noted above, happy to answer any
and all questions as best I can.

[RBW] FS: 2 Selle Anatomica Titanico X saddles

2013-08-27 Thread johnb
I have two of these. For me, they are amazingly comfortable till about 40
miles then less so. But that is my butt. My misfortune is your fortune in
this case.
They are both black/copper rivets. One is 3 months old. The other is 8-9
months old. They are each $60 with $10 shipping. If you buy both, it is
$100 with free shipping. Both are in great shape. Will post pictures if
desired but they pretty much look like the saddles on the site.

[RBW] Re: Wooden Fenders for Atlantis - photos / suggestions

I have a pair of flat Woodie's fenders
(http://www.flickr.com/photos/jbusteed/sets/72157633795911335/). I agree
with all the comments pro and most of the negative ones also. They look
amazing. I found them incredibly easy to install. They do a decent job in
moderate rainfall and if it is raining harder than that, there is nothing
that is going to keep the bike from getting drenched IMHO. I also thought
that Woody was easy to deal with and a prompt shipper.

[RBW] Re: Compass 26" tire vs. Soma New Express 26" tire.

2014-03-06 Thread johnb
I have the 1.75" Compass tires on my Atlantis and the 1.5" Compass on the
Rambouillet. I cannot say enough good things about the ride. Excellent!
Durability seems pretty good. I have had one flat on the Atlantis and a
highway with steel from a steel belt puncturing the rear tire (of
course...). Other than that, no flats in 2+ years with the Atlantis (maybe
3500 miles).

[RBW] Cycle North Carolina on a Quickbeam

2009-10-05 Thread johnb

Just a quick update on my trip across NC that I posted a QB question
about earlier. I rode the entire state on 32/40x16/18. The first two
days, I rode 32x18 but on the first day on the Blue Ridge Parkway, I
think I probably could have ridden the 40x18 since most of that day
was straightforward minimal grade climbing. I spun out badly on the
downhills till I figured out that coasting was the best option. Day
Two was very steep but short climbs and definitely needed the 32x18
combo. Middle three days, I used the 40x18 and the last two I went to
40x16. On the whole, it worked well. I could climb with most people
but lost out on the downhills. I completed the entire ride including
the century in reasonable time (for me) and while not even close to
the front of the pack, I maintained about a 14mph average.

I used the Acorn Roll bag in the back and the Acorn Rando bag in the
front. I really liked the Rando bag. It could easily hold two jackets/
warmers, tube, some tools, some food, a camera and a phone with room
to spare. It was very easy to mount and all the pockets were very easy
to get to. I cannot comment on the Roll bag since I had no mechanical
problems. I got a lot of positive comments on both bags.

Okay, it appears my Pedro's floor pump gave up the ghost this morning
after about 4-5 years of use. So unless I can revive it tonight, I am

a) last longer than 4-5 years
b) be serviceable if necessary

I am sure people have some favorites out there!

thanks!

[RBW] Best fenders for a QB

2010-01-09 Thread johnb
I have a 52cm QB that I would like to replace the current single stay
SKS fenders that don't really work with the rear wheel sliding back
and forth. I could actually go on and on about their limitations...

So with the idea that the fender must be adjusted somewhat frequently
to deal with the wheel adjustments, would the two stay SKS like Riv
sells be the best choice? I am assuming that metal fenders would just
suck at this.

[RBW] Re: Swift Industries Panniers

2010-10-20 Thread johnb
Ray,

I have the rear panniers in waxed cotton and I would heartily
recommend them. They are very well built, waterproof (at least in the
one storm they have been in), and quite stylish. Martina and Jason
were great to work with.

[RBW] Favorite shoes

2010-01-21 Thread johnb
In the new Riv Reader, Grant notes four shoes that he liked for
riding. The Dromartis look great but are probably out of my budget...
For comfort, my favorites with a pair of single strap Carnac's that I
bought on sale in the mid-90s that continue to this day on someone
else's feet along with the rest of the bike. Unfortunately for me, I
don't use Look style pedals anymore so I have been searching for the
best SPD and 'regular' shoes since then. I can tell you a lot of
brands I don't like but I have not found anything that is really
comfortable for day/week long rides.

Thoughts?

[RBW] Re: NAHBS - Observations - Longish Post

2010-03-01 Thread johnb
It was my first NAHBS so maybe I was looking at it with different
eyes. There were definitely some over the top bikes there and some
racing bikes that did not interest me at all. But I got to see a lot
of bikes that I have seen pictures of and heard described in BQ or on
the web. ANT, Capricorn, Clockworks (sharing the booth with
Capricorn), Cielo (they were showing their bike from the Oregon
Manifest), Bilenky, Velo-Orange, Peter Mooney, and Banjo Brothers
stood out amongst the crowd. I found a builder right here in Baltimore
that I did not even know existed.

It looked like a good crowd on Saturday. In the afternoon it was
downright crowded in some of the booths. I thought that the Capricorn
rack/Bailey bag works bag was a great commuter/errand set up. Dromarti
was there with their beautiful classic cycling shoes. Lucky for me
they were just showing them...

I really enjoyed the show.

These have been drilled to fit my bike so your bike should be close to

fenders which for most people would be a deal breaker.

[RBW] Re: Anyone ever do a cross state tour on a quickbeam

FWIW, I will have a small tool bag in back and a Berthoud handlebar
bag in front. Probably 3lbs of gear plus my fat ass... I am carrying a
camera, phone, wallet, and any 'fall' gear that gets stripped off in
the afternoon. Probably not more than 3 lbs total.

[RBW] Re: Anyone ever do a cross state tour on a quickbeam

2009-08-20 Thread johnb

I did the ride last year on my Rambouillet and it was fine. I was
thinking about getting a 18t or 16t and have the REI boys swap it out
once we are out of the mountains on day 2 (assuming it is like last
year where the first day started hilly and then was rolling and day 2
was all rolling).

I am going to take it on a 40-50 mile ride this weekend and see how it
goes.

[RBW] Quickbeam brake question

2009-08-23 Thread johnb

I have a new 52cm QB that comes with Silver sidepull brakes. When I
apply the rear brake, I get a heavy vibration throughout the frame/
seat.

I have
- checked the brakes installation and it seems fine.
- cleaned the rim
- checked toe-in

Thoughts? Anyone else run into this with a small frame?

[RBW] Saddlebags and smaller bikes

2012-06-07 Thread johnb
I am challenged by short legs. I have a 52cm Atlantis with 26" wheels with
a medium saddlesack and SKS fenders. Because the bike frame is small and
the saddle sack is medium, the bag rubs back and forth throughout the ride
against the fender. When I put a rear rack on, it silences the bag but also
cuts 30% of its capacity out since it gets a bit smushed... For the moment,
I am tolerating the back and forth but there are days it bugs the — well
lets just say it gets on my nerves.

So my question, are there good canvas saddlebags that hold tools, tube,
sunscreen and assorted sundries that will fit in my frame?
