[RBW] Re: I ordered a Sam!

2014-08-12 Thread Thomas Skean
I loved my 2010 (solid) orange Hillborne so much I bought a 2012 (solid) green
Hillborne, I built them up very very nearly identically and ride both regularly.

Fantastic bikes! Congratulations! Enjoy!

Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] Re: Chain Length - Cheviot

2014-08-12 Thread Thomas Skean
I find the specification of the 114-link chain being 8 links too short with a
26-40-tooth crankset and a 36-tooth max cog in the rear comforting. If I were
to build up a Cheviot (currently considered in the 2016 or 2017 plan) a
114-link chain should be fine; I'd have a 35-or-36-tooth single chainring up
front and a 11-32 freewheel in back.

I had been wondering how that would work.

Thomas Lynn Skean

I think this one available through Soma Fabrications, the Champs Élysée, is
distinct from any of the ones you mentioned...

[RBW] Re: Get them while they're hot

2014-08-03 Thread Thomas Skean
Yeah, products that support only quantities this small don't seem to have the
"economic inertia" necessary to survive various external forces. Or perhaps
Grant simply wants to play with a new head badge design (running the show
should have some perks).

Well, I'm glad I have two virtually identical Hillbornes (60cm DTT W'ford
canti) and plenty of Sackville/Nitto luggage configurations.

[RBW] Re: Paul's brakes on your Riv. Experience between models?

2014-08-05 Thread Thomas Skean
I've used Tektro drop-bar linear-pull-compatible levers with my Motolites with
no problem. I've been led to believe that my levers are actually just sort of
"generic" Cane Creek Drop-V levers. That could be wrong. But in any case the
Tektro levers worked fine. (There's nothing like a Paul Love Lever 2.5 to go
with Motolites, though; they just feel solid and reassuring. Probably just
because I like the looks of both the levers and the brakes. :))

[RBW] Re: Albatross bars

2012-04-11 Thread Thomas Skean
+1 for the Albatross bar. I have both the CrMo and the Al. On mine, the
widths are different (they are from a different era, perhaps not even
(gasp!) from RBW). Al is either 54cm or 55cm and CrMo is 56cm. Switching
directly from one to the other, I can tell the width difference. But I
can't tell any other difference when riding. FWIW, I don't ride
aggressively but am around 250lbs. I like a wider bar generally but the
1-2cm difference fades quickly when riding. (I am going for the 58cm Bosco
when it comes out; it's an upright-wide-bar-rider's dream!)

Slightly OT: Which is correct? "handlebar" or "handlebars"

Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] Re: Odd New Bike (HS)

2011-12-07 Thread Thomas Skean
I tried Shimano IGHs a few years ago. Went through three of them in <2,000
miles. At first I thought it was my weight; that they simply weren't made to
operate under the torques induced by a 275lb (at the time) person. It might
also have been the gritty nature of the paths I rode. But the last hub, which
lasted more than 1,000 miles, would not shift much at all when it was 20
degrees or colder. That was the final nail; I ride year round and park outside
in the Chicago area. A shifting system that literally froze just didn't work
for me.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean
who finds IGHs appealing but has IGH CFS
