[RBW] Re: Children of Atlantis

2009-10-08 Thread Solomander

I have to confess that I can't warm up to the double top tube on the
Bombadil. I have a Hilsen and it's a lovely, comfortable bike, but I
want something that I can do some trail and mountain biking on. I
have been seriously considering the Fargo. It's not a surprise to me
that Rivish folks wouldn't find the design appealing, but I see the
Fargo as a very Rivish spin on the all rounder mountain bike. The
Fargo has been ridden to completion on the Great Divide race and on
tour cross country. I am curious to try out mechanical disc brakes,
which from my limited understanding are pretty robust. Salsa is also
coming out with some off road oriented drop bars, called Woodchippers,
which also are Rivish in their concept and design. No design is
really perfect for everyone, but I think that the Fargo takes a
utilitarian approach to the mountain/touring/road bike from a slightly
different point of view. As my accountant says, there's no accounting
for taste.

[RBW] Re: Yet another Rivendell-style product recommendation request: sunglasses

2009-10-22 Thread Solomander

I have been very happy with Rudy Project Exceptions. The newer model
is caled Perceptions. They are modular sunglasses. You can wear them
as non Rx sunglasses, or you can wear them with your Rx plugged into
the frame. The big advantage of these glasses is that your Rx lenses
fit right into the frames and the sunglasses are worn as flip ups over
the Rx lenses. I have a progressive lens Rx that I use with mine. I
like these glasses as a rider (and as an ophthalmologist) because
lenses that are clipped behind the regular plane of the sunglasses in
a carrier are too close to the eye, often close enough to rub your
eyelashes. In addition, if you have a significant Rx, the change in
distance will affect the effective lens power, changing your vision
with your glasses. This is less expensive and kludgy than Oakley's
grinding a Rx into the whole oversize lens. The one disadvantage is
that the flip up lenses can vibrate a little bit.

[RBW] Re: End of the Atlantis?!?

2009-08-20 Thread Solomander

I can understand why they are being discontinued- Toyo made frames are
pricing themselves out of existence. I am sure that Waterford could
make them, but likely they would be at least as expensive. I wonder
what a custom builder charges for a lugged frame and fork? Nobody can
dispute the beauty of an Atlantis frame and fork, but OTOH you can get
a LHT frame and fork for what, $500? It seems that GP had anticipated
this, by presenting the 2 new models. Unless I am missing something,
once the Atlantis is discontinued, Rivendell will no longer offer a
bike model that is capable of loaded touring.

I'm curious what wheel/tire set up all of you rando guys use. I have
36 spoke wheels and 35mm Paselas on my Hilsen. My original thought
was to have a robust build that would be good for dirt roads and light
touring. While smooth, I do find my bike to be a little bit poky,
especially going up hills. My Hilsen is usually about 1 mph slower
than my road bike. I have difficulty imagining riding it for really
long distances. Would a 32 spoke wheelset make a big difference, or a
32 mm tire? I am not anxious to buy another wheelset, especially
because I have been drooling over the Salsa Fargo as a potential
acquisition.

[RBW] How Much Difference Would Different Wheels/Tires Make

2011-08-05 Thread Solomander
I have an AHH that's running 36 spoked Velocity wheels and 35 mm Panaracer
Paselas. My original priorities were bombproof and plush riding. The ride
is undeniably cushy, but there are times when I wouldn't mind it if the bike
was a bit quicker- especially on hills. I have been contemplating running
32 mm Paselas and/or going to a somewhat lighter wheelset. I still wonder
how much real world difference these changes would make. What do you think?

[RBW] What's the shortest stem that you would use?

2011-08-06 Thread Solomander
I have an 8 cm stem on my AHH (started with a 10 cm) and still feel a little
bit stretched out when I ride on the hoods. This leads me to believe that I
would be more comfy on a slightly smaller frame, but that's neither here nor

Seth- The bars are at the same height as the seat. They're comfy in that

Pat,

The Noodles have a 95 mm reach, so I need something shorter than that. The
only possible Nitto would be Mark's bars, which are 82. There seem to be
some Salsa, Ritchey and Bontrager bars that have a reach of 75 mm, but
they're all black. At least they're relatively inexpensive. Wonder if a 13
mm decrease in drop would be enough.

Re: [RBW] What's the shortest stem that you would use?

2011-08-07 Thread Solomander
So I raised the bars a bit. It definitely helped to make me feel less
stretched out. I also noticed that my center of gravity was shifted back on
the bike and that I had less weight on the bars and more on the seat.
Didn't make a noticeable difference in speed- I'm still a slug. I'm going
to live with the bike for a few weeks before doing anything else.

I am also thinking about rechecking my fore-aft saddle position. I have a
road bike that I feel very comfortable on. The distance from the nose of
the saddle to the center of the bars is the same on my Litespeed and my AHH.
The Litespeed has a straight seatpost and the AHH has a set back seatpost.
This makes me wonder if I am in the right place over the pedals. Lots of
variables!

Just went out to the garage with a plumb line. The seat seems to be right
on the money, in the same relative position as on my Litespeed. I am going
to wait a week or two before doing anything else. I keep waffling about
whether to change the bars or the stem. The tops of my Noodles are in the
same relative position as the anatomic bars on my Litespeed. On the one
hand, Mark's bars will likely move the hoods back far enough. OTOH, I like
the Noodles and doubt that moving the tops back an inch will make that much
of a difference. I may wind up flipping a coin :)

Awesome looking ride. The idea of riding 300K in one day on my AHH is mind
blowing.

Re: [RBW] What's the shortest stem that you would use?

2011-08-08 Thread Solomander
Rene,

Your point is well taken. I'm giving the bike one more weekend as is, then
will see. I am leaning towards a 6 cm stem. My 46 cm bars are wider than
they are on my other bike.

Nice pix. I have always wondered what happened to couches after they mated
and went off to die.

2011-08-11 Thread Solomander
Zack,

Thanks for the link - got it and understand. At my new, higher handlebar
height, there is an improvement in reach, but it's accompanied by a change
in my center of gravity. I'm still adjusting to it, but am not sure if I
like the change in my fore-aft balance on the bike. If I don't, I will go
for a shorter stem.

Best,

Joel

Re: [RBW] What's the shortest stem that you would use?

2011-08-13 Thread Solomander
OK, did a 24 mile ride this morning and raising the bars seems to have done
the trick. I am reasonably comfortable on the hoods for long periods. When
on the hoods, the tops are just about lined up with the front hub, which is
another positioning indicator that seems to work for me. Now it's time to
put on some mileage. Thanks for everyone's input.
