Re: [RBW] duomatic

2011-05-07 Thread Reed Kennedy
After breaking my first Sturmey S3X three speed fix hub I was super excited
by the prospect of replacing it with a S2c duomatic kick shift hub. I went
out to Mission Bicycles here in San Francisco where they even had a
S2-hubed-bike (the one without the coaster brake) in stock.

They were happy to let me try it out, but they warned it was not the most
user friendly of things. Hard to shift, and hard to know if you shifted,
they said.

Pah! I said. I'm sure an old hand like myself will have no troubles! And off
I went.

Indeed, by the time I got back (a couple miles later) I could shift reliably
50-75% of the time. I was feeling quite accomplished.

Then I thought: How much do I really want a heavy, inefficient, difficult to
operate, potentially fragile hub that only gives a 38% range?

No Duomatics for me, thanks. I'll stick with either a true single speed or a
bigger range, like a Sturmey 5 or a Alfine 8.

(Or, if you are looking for something silly, a S3X. My second one now has 30
miles on it and is doing fine so far.)

Reed

[RBW] Re: duomatic

2011-05-09 Thread Reed Kennedy
How did it break? Well, I did some things with it that I arguably should not
have:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/edrabbit/5682255789/in/faves-sofauxboho/
Which lead to problems:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/edrabbit/5682260605/in/set-72157626511121539/

While resist-pedaling on the downslope of one of those mounds my S3X low
gear (a 43 or so incher) let go. A couple miles later my middle gear gave up
as well, leaving me with only top.

The shop I bought it from said that one should be able to skid the rear
wheel on that hub and replaced it with an entirely new hand-built wheel.

It seems either the original hub was bad, it was adjusted wrong, or the
cable stretched and it went out of adjustment. My money is on that last one.

So far the new one has about 40 miles on it and it has behaved well so far,
though I'll admit I'm rather babying at the moment.

Just remember that the rougher you're going the more certain you have to be
that your hub is adjusted perfectly.

Oh, and remember these things have significant drive train lash. If you buy
one without knowing that you'll likely be disappointed.

But I like mine!

Well, I can tell you that at least for me they did not work very well.
Rather dredging up vague memories, I'll link to the review I wrote at the
time:
http://www.amazon.com/review/R26ADRBEXQJ6XF

I can't say for sure that the shop I bought mine from stopped carrying them
because of all the money they lost on me, but I can tell you they did stop
carrying them shortly after my little adventure.

I noticed you specified that you wanted a "later model" hub. I hope they
improved them! Please check in after 6 months if it's still working? I
still love the idea...

[RBW] Thoughts on tubeless?

2016-05-09 Thread Reed Kennedy
I've been loving my new-to-me Hunqapillar, but I gotta say it does feel a
bit sluggish at times with 2.15" Schwalbe Big Bens on there.

I'm going to give the lighter Schwalbe Big Ones a shot. It looks like the
ones I've ordered are tubeless-compatible, so I was thinking of giving that
a shot. Anyone who's tried it willing to share their thoughts?

Also, is Stans No Tubes the way to go, or is there a better option?

The rims are Velocity Dyads, circa 2011 I believe. Since they're from a
while ago I doubt they're tubeless compatible, but I have no idea how to
tell if they're easily converted. Any suggestions?

And thanks for the advice (and you too Mike)! Sign me up for Orange Seal.
Since I won't be getting the Stans kit, any advice on what other stuff I'll
need? Valves and rim strips and all that? What are you using?

Re: [RBW] Thoughts on tubeless?

2016-05-10 Thread Reed Kennedy
Can you use the thin tubeless rim tape like the WTB WCS that Mike linked on
rims that weren't designed for tubeless, like my Dyads? Do you just put it
over traditional cloth rim strips (I currently have Velox) or do you remove
the old cloth stuff and put the new thin stuff directly on the metal of the
rim, over the spoke eyelets?

And again, thanks for all the help! I'm slowly catching on here. Sounds
like a fun project!

What a generous offer Jeff!

I've been meaning to give one of those a try as well! I figure Joe should
get first dibs as the thread starter, but if he's not interested I'd be
happy to pay shipping in order to try the C17 and then pass it on after

Thanks for working that out René! I'll be on giant but smooth tires myself
(Schwalbe Big Ones) and may join you on the Pine Mountain bypass route.

Gorgeous bike! And yeah, give the fatties a try. I didn't have much fun in
traffic with the heavy 700 x 2.15" Marathons that Riv likes so much, but
when I put a set of Schwalbe Big Ones on, wow! They still spin up nice and
quick, and I feel like a human hovercraft.

Just converted them to tubeless last night, thanks everyone here on the
list for advice. We'll see how that works today!

[RBW] Thoughts on the whole low trail thing?

2016-06-14 Thread Reed Kennedy
I've been a Rivvy sorta guy for the last ten years, owning several of their
bikes and numerous others built up in Riv-inspired ways. Recently I've been
reading through back issues of Bicycle Quarterly, and back posts on Jan
Heine's blog. It's got me wondering about this whole alternate-universe
practical bike thing he describes, which seems to be characterized by low
trail steering geometry, flexible frames, and carrying loads up front.

I'd love to try it, but such bikes aren't exactly common.

Does anyone have experience with both Rivvy (mid-trail, burly rigid frame,
carrying stuff all over) and the more French rando / Jan sort of bike? What
did you think of each?

Re: [RBW] Re: Thoughts on the whole low trail thing?

2016-06-14 Thread Reed Kennedy
Thanks very much for the thoughts, Bill! You described exactly the sort of
experience I was hoping to hear about.

I'm currently considering training for a couple brevets. I've never done
one, and it both seems like an interesting challenge and a good training
goal. At the moment the two most appropriate (or perhaps I should say least
inappropriate) bikes I own for such a thing are a drop bar'd Hunqapillar
and an old 2004 Madone race bike that was given to me and then ignored. I'm
concerned that the Hunq is overbuilt for randonneuring and that the Madone
would simply be unpleasant. But then, I'm also concerned I'm just looking
for an excuse to buy another bike!

Do you feel randonneuring benefits hugely from a purpose-built bike, or
should I just go for it with what I have?

Great feedback, thanks Steve!

Mind if I ask what you think of the MAP Randonneur, and which wheel size
yours is in? I've actually found a used Map Randonneur in my size and for
sale near me. I'm awfully tempted, but had been hoping for a 650 x 42 wheel
and tire, and this one is set up for 700 x 32.

Isn't that the truth Bill! Thanks for the advice. I think I'll finally sell
that Madone and aim to train for and do my first brevet on the Hunqapillar.
Then, if I like it, I'll start scheming around a low trail bike for brevets.

Plus, that'll give me some good time to dream about what my
ideal randonneuring bike would be like!

Sure thing Patrick. At the moment I've finally managed to patch a hole in
one of the tires and have just gotten the air to stay inside. Current plan
is to test them over the next week and a half and then ride them on the
West Point Inn Riv Ramble if they hold up. Once I get home from that I
should have enough miles on them to form at least an initial opinion. I'll
try to remember to write up some impressions.

Hey René, are you sure about the 40mm trail on the Hunqapillar? This image
on Riv's site:
http://www.rivbike.com/v/vspfiles/assets/images/WFHunq62.jpg
(From the Hunq page: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f-hunqapillar.htm )
Seems to indicate a massive-sounding 67.3mm trail. Or is that talking about
some other sort of trail, or measuring it differently?

I'd assumed that my Hunqapillar borders on being quite-high-trail. But if
it really is 40mm and the others we've been talking about are but 1cm less,
well, that doesn't seem like so much...

Would you mind letting me know where you found the 40mm number for the Hunq?

2016-06-16 Thread Reed Kennedy
Thanks everyone for the extremely educational thoughts, comments, and
experiences that have been shared here! I'm somewhat abashed to neglected
the search feature and to have started another round of what sounds like a
well discussed thread, but I've just loved reading what everyone was kind
enough to write. What great information!

It does sound like there is something to the whole low trail thing. I'm
going to try to find one to take for a ride see how they feel to me in
person. N+1 bikes, as always!

[RBW] FS: Two Rivvy bikes, one not, all big

2016-06-17 Thread Reed Kennedy
I've fallen in love with my Hunqapillar and have decided to part with a few
bikes I haven't ridden recently.

First, a Bike Friday folding touring bike that I had custom made and then
upgraded to be as Riv-ish as I could manage:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/bik/5641095552.html

Second, a RockCombo that has remained almost unmolested. This is the only
production bike, other than the MB-0, ever to be sold with drop bars:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/bik/5641112197.html

Finally and least interestingly, here is a old Trek Madone that used to
belong to Gary Fisher:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/bik/5640961497.html

You can tell how much I like each bike by how unrealistic my price is. I
fear I may be dreaming a bit on the Friday and the RockCombo, but they're
just both such darn nice bikes. Anyway, feel free to make a thoughtful
offer if you're interested.

All bikes are in my garage in San Francisco, ready to be whisked off to new
adventures.

Reed

Re: [RBW] Soma Xpress Wear

2016-06-18 Thread Reed Kennedy
My Panaracer Pasaelas (same maker, very similar tire) wear the same way. I
generally run them until I can either see a bit of cords or until they
start getting flats more often than I care to deal with. Though on the
Pasaelas the tan sidewalls usually give out before either of those happen.

Anyway, no need to toss them for lack to tread pattern! I actually like
them better once that has worn away.

If only it fit me, Joe!

This is actually my second RockCombo. I sold the first because it was just

bought this one. Which, of course, is the same size.

Time for it to to someone a bit more reasonably sized!

I suspect the San Marcos suffered from not having much of anybody to
promote it.

   - I don't remember Rivendell extolling its virtues as much as they have
bikes that are more fully theirs. Grant has said that Riv only got $6 per
frame sold elsewhere. It also represented a direction (speedy) that Riv has
moved away from a bit since then. I get the impression Riv hoped it would
be an inexpensive Rivvy bike, but it ended up costing almost as much as a
"real" Riv. They seem to have accomplished this goal better with the Clem
and the Sam complete, which tend to come in at (or below) the cost of a
built San Marcos, and both of which (I hope) make more money for Riv.
   - LBSes were never (as far as I know) offered the San Marcos as a
complete bike. Its a rare LBS that is going to build up a bare frame
without a customer directing the build. It's a lot more work, and a
   significant financial risk.
   - SOMA didn't seem to push it much either. I don't know why they didn't
offer it as a complete as they have other bikes, or do anything else to
actually get them out into the retail channel.

It almost seems like the San Marcos was somebody's pet project that kind of
lost steam. I'd love to know more about how the San Marcos project went at
SOMA / Merry Sales and how many were sold, but for now I'll just keep
wondering.

Whatever happened, it sure did result in a lovely bicycle!

and Clementine. They've been open about what compromises were required to
get down to that price point, and now folks can choose between a bike with
no compromises, one with some compromises (Appaloosa complete or Hilsen
complete), or one with more, though still thoughtful, compromises (Clem and
Clementine). Everyone is welcome to decide what is important to them, and
what suits their budget.

I don't think anyone will argue that it's not possible to make a somewhat
Rivvish bike for less than $1,300-1,500. I don't think anyone would argue
that a $500 Rivvish bike wouldn't sell quite well. But I imagine actually
doing it would require making compromises that Grant and the other folks at
Riv don't want to make. Some of those compromises are doubtless about parts
quality, frame materials, and fabrication. But I like to think there are
other compromises that Riv chooses not to make regarding arranging fair
deals with their suppliers and making sure the folks who make their bikes
have fair working conditions and decent lives.

When you make something really, truly cheap there are often costs that
aren't apparent in the final product. I like that Riv thinks about that. I
feel better buying things from them because of it.

Reed

Re: [RBW] Wife asked me to go on a 2 week bike tour, help!!

2016-06-22 Thread Reed Kennedy
You've already gotten some great advice here! But here's one more tip that
has served me well in similar circumstances:

Try to find a commercial bike tour operator in the area you're interested
in and see if you can learn about how they do it.

These folks have generally spent years honing their routes, making sure
they go to beautiful and interesting places, and making sure the routes are
accessible. That's how they stay in business!

You might call and say that you're doing a self-supported tour just you and
your wife, but you'd be happy to send them money for a nice dinner or
somesuch if they'd be willing to give you some route advice. Most are run
by bicycle people, and tend to be nice folks.

Here are a few Google told me about:
http://www.atlanticcanadacycling.com/bicycle-tours/newfoundland-bicycle-tour
http://www.freewheeling.ca/adventures/NewfoundlandVikingTrail.html
http://www.pedalandseaadventures.com/newfoundland-viking-trail-bicycle-tour

And most of all, congrats and have a great time!

Re: [RBW] Re: Tire wear question. When to replace?

2016-06-29 Thread Reed Kennedy
Great info, thanks! I've long had theories about how this might go, but
it's great to have images with solid information!

Random thought: I wonder if thinning the outer rubber on a tire could,
under some circumstances, lead to less flatting? Hear me out...

As we can all tell by looking at used tires, the rubber part doesn't
provide much resistance to pictures or cuts. I believe it is the casing
that provides most of the flat resistance. And while you'll sometimes have
something punch all the way through in one go, most of my flats seem to
come from something getting embedded in the rubber and then pushed in
further and further with every rotation of the tire. That's the whole
theory behind tire wipers.

I wonder if less rubber might hold debris less firmly, and the
puncture-causers might be more likely to fall off as you ride. Perhaps
resulting in fewer flats?

Interesting! I can't say I've observed that. To me, riding in a city with
lots of street debris, flats have generally seemed random. I haven't
noticed any correlation along with my tires being newer or older. But I
haven't been meticulous in my data collection either. It's just the
impression I'm left with.

[RBW] Garage Sale - Nigel Smythe Country Bag repair / upgrade

2010-10-03 Thread Reed Kennedy
One of the more wonderful items available at yesterday's Rivendell garage
sale were Nigel Smythe Country Bags.

Apparently the first run of these bags had the saddle rail straps and
support dowel quite far back, on the flap of the bag rather than the
enclosed body.

As a result of this, the bag hangs slightly oddly, especially when loaded:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/249889284/
(Not my bag or my photo, credit to Gino.)

The fine folks at Rivendell decided this was unacceptable and declined to
release the bags to the public. The official solution was to comission a
second run of bags with the dowel and saddle straps moved forward, off the
flap.

Yesterday at the garage sale folks were given the opportunity to purchase
the original, slightly flawed bags for only $30. Many were available, and I
think nearly every person there left with one.

Most of the folks I spoke to were entirely untroubled by the way the bags
hang, and planned to simply use them. This was originally my intention as
well, but on the way home I remembered that I own some leatherworking
supplies.

So I decided to see what I could do.

In the end, I decided to sew the flap down an extra inch so that the
dowl-and-seat-strap portion would be fully supported:
http://notfine.com/pics/nigel_smythe_country_bag_upgrade/2-in_progress.JPG

It worked pretty well!
http://notfine.com/pics/nigel_smythe_country_bag_upgrade/3-after.JPG
(Compare to Gino's picture above.)

Unless you look very closely, you can hardly tell the bag has been modified:
http://notfine.com/pics/nigel_smythe_country_bag_upgrade/4-close-up-one.JPG
http://notfine.com/pics/nigel_smythe_country_bag_upgrade/5-close-up-two.JPG

The only downside that I can see is that the opening is now slightly
smaller:
http://notfine.com/pics/nigel_smythe_country_bag_upgrade/6-smaller-opening-one.jpg

However, given where it sits relative to my saddle I don't think it could
open much more anyway while on the bike:
http://notfine.com/pics/nigel_smythe_country_bag_upgrade/7-smaller-opening-saddle.JPG

All in all, I'm very happy with this bag and with my modification. Thanks to
the wonderful folks at Rivendell for the generous deals on such lovely
objects, and also for a idyllic ride.

Cheers,
Reed

Re: [RBW] Re: Garage Sale - Nigel Smythe Country Bag repair / upgrade

2010-10-04 Thread Reed Kennedy
A few notes on how I did it and the supplies employed:

I used some quite nice 25lb test wax coated nylon thread designed especially
for stitching leather:
http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/search/searchresults/1227-03.aspx?feature=Product_3&kw=thread

encourage anyone contemplating a similar modification to use a product like
that. The thread ends up under quite a load!

I also used this leatherworking awl to expand the existing stitch holes in
the bag:
http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/search/searchresults/3209-00.aspx?feature=Product_1&kw=awl
<http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/search/searchresults/3209-00.aspx?feature=Product_1&kw=awl>Any
sharp narrow awl should do the trick.

Finally, I used these needles:
http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/search/searchresults/1195-00.aspx?feature=Product_14&kw=needle
<http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/search/searchresults/1195-00.aspx?feature=Product_14&kw=needle>They
are noteworthy because the tips are blunt, which helps your stitch follow
the awl hole.

I'm sure there are ways to do it without these things, but they certainly
made the process much more pleasant.

Cheers,
Reed

Not quite... "A pint's a pound the world around." A pint being 16oz, 22oz of
water weighs a touch under 1.4lbs.

My largest water bottle weighs just under 3oz. It's made by Trek, and I
believe it's a 26oz model.

And finally, that bottle filled with water weighed 1.75lbs.

All in all, I'd say it takes about two full water bottles weigh 3lbs. They
might weigh just a bit more, though.

[RBW] What fenders on a Soma San Marcos?

2012-03-31 Thread Reed Kennedy
I've now got nearly all the parts for my 3 speed Soma San Marcos build!

Anybody know the largest fender this frame will fit? I'm thinking Velo
Orange hammered fenders, but I'm not sure if I should go with the 37mm or
the 45mm.

It'd be dreamy to run 32mm Paselas with fenders if I can get away with it.

(This is a 63cm and will wear Grand Compe 610 brakes, for what it's worth.)

[RBW] Fwd: WTB: 700c wheelset with 135mm rear spacing

2018-08-19 Thread Reed Kennedy
Thanks to another list member I have been fortunate enough to adopt an A.
Homer Hilsen. This one wants 700c wheels and the rear is spaced for a 135mm
mountain / touring rear hub.

Anyone have a spare wheelset they're interested in parting with? Preference
is for something at least vaguely on the lighter side and with reasonably
wide rims. Doesn't need a dynamo (though I'd be open to that). Don't care
if the rims are tubeless compatible or not.

Happy to pay $$. Could also trade a super nice Velocity Atlas / Phil Wood
touring wheelset if you're looking to do some offroad riding or loaded
touring.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thought on Dyno vs. asymmetrical battery headlights?

2018-08-21 Thread Reed Kennedy
I have Schmitt dynamo hubs and Edelux lights on two bikes, and I adore
them. So convenient and simple to use.

I also have another bike with a Shutter Precision hub which has been more
trouble, but is finally working well now.

Surprisingly, all three have all been left unmolested in San Francisco,
even the bike that is often parked outside.

I do have a couple other bikes that I'm often tempted to ride on longer
brevets, but don't because they don't have lights. I just ordered a Ixon IQ
so I'll have the option of riding these, and to have a light to lend to
friends who want to try a brevet without committing to a full lighting
setup. We'll see what I think of it in practice.

Ah, good point Cody! I forgot that unlike my Hilsen the current Sam has a
6° sloping top tube. The 62cm 6° New-Sam has the same theoretical 62.5cm
top tube as my 65cm 1.5° Waterford-Hilsen. Should get the bars up just
about as high and fit just about the same. I got it wrong, I bet you'd fit
just fine on the 62cm New-Sam. (And I bet I would too!)

You're right about the longer top tube on the 64cm Waterford-Sam compared
to the 62cm New-Sam. All other things being equal (and all bodies being
proportional) the longer TT'd 64cm Waterford-Sam might be predisposed to
work a bit better with upright bars, and the shorter TT'd 62cm New-Sam
might be preferable for drop bars. But I suspect both would work out with
either.

All that said, bear in mind what Grant said on the old Rambouillet flyer:

"The least useful [fit information], yet most likely to be harped on, is
top tube length. You cannot compare bikes by top tube length unless seat
tube angles and head tube height and steerer length are exactly the same."

Of course he's right. The Hilsen I'm building only needed a 1cm shorter
stem to put the bars in the same place as my custom Fitz, which has a 2cm
shorter top tube!

I appreciate the versatility of the Surly 8-Pack Rack, but the
erector-set-style mounting gives me the heebies. Even if it works well and

I'm planning to try the Soma Champs Élysées Mini Front Rack for my
new-to-me Hilsen:

But it very much looks to be a rack intended to support a brevet bag (if
that) and not much more. Soma doesn't list a weight limit, but I doubt it's
basket-worthy.

A very good point, Ian. I "knew" that, but sure wasn't remembering it
during this conversation. The Roadeo I test-rode at Riv definitely felt
more similar to my 9/6/9 standard diameter bikes. So subjective though!

I remain tempted to beg some poor frame builder to make 200lbs me a 64cm

Maybe that'll be my reward for selling all the bikes I don't ride. ::grin::

Yeah, I’ve never heard of a frame that thin gauge in a size that big.
Probably because it won’t work well. But nobody seems to know for sure as
nobody I’ve talked to has tried it.

I think I know someone who’d build me such a thing, I’m just stalling
because I’m hesitant to spend money (and ask a builder to spend their time)
on an experiment that might end up unrideable and get recycled.

Dang, thanks so much Brian! I have learned so much by derailing this poor
thread!

As someone who just picked up a 65cm Hilsen and then found himself
wondering if he'd be better served by a Roadeo the info from Mark you
shared is music to my ears.

The Hilsen fits better, takes a bigger tire, and has more BB drop, all
things I like. Yet I was thinking of giving it all up for a lighter-tubed
Roadeo! Glad to know there's not much improvement to be had, at least in my
size.

Even better, I already have the Hilsen.

Re: [RBW] Re: Likely FS soon: Rambouillet 60 & Legolas 59

2018-09-17 Thread Reed Kennedy
Following up on the Great Roadeo Tubing Debate:

I've been using a piece of industrial testing equipment to measure wall
thickness in bike frames. Last weekend I was fortunate enough to measure a
Roadeo, Rambouillet, A. Homer Hilsen, and Hunqapillar all in similar sizes.
(Thanks to Ben Miller!)

Results are here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XeS2nJhBPSDRbqgG1-F2VOI_vK1QZnZmysARDJWyGps/edit?usp=sharing

Short version: The Roadeo is lighter of tube than the Hilsen, with the main
difference being the top tube. However, the 61cm version I measured was not
built with 6/4/6 tubing. Interestingly, the 64cm Rambouillet was almost as
thin / light, but the Roadeo was just a touch thinner.

If anyone around the SF Bay Area has a smaller Roadeo I'd be excited to
measure it. Or, frankly, any other Riv!

Glad so many of y’all are curating your bikes and keeping them pristine. I
really appreciate it when I buy ‘em used!

As for me? When I’m on a brevet and hit a control the bike is getting
leaned against whatever is quick and handy as long as it won’t damage the
metal bits. Part of the reason I went with a powder coat on my custom is
durability: I consider it a protective layer just as much as an aesthetic
feature.

I figure when the powder coat gets awful that’s my cue to pick a new color!

Now, my vintage bikes with their original finish? That’s a whole different
ballgame. I don’t like to rest ‘em on anything but a bike stand.

I should probably own fewer vintage bikes.

I also zip tie basket to my racks. Sadly haven’t found them to work in

eventually break near the ties. I’ve also had some of the basket welds

I wish the basket would last as long as the zip ties!

For the curious, the tubing wall thickness measurements I've taken of
several similar-sized Rivendell bikes can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XeS2nJhBPSDRbqgG1-F2VOI_vK1QZnZmysARDJWyGps/edit?usp=sharing

Please note that I strongly suspect Riv uses different gauges of tubing for
different sizes, so these measurements almost certainly do not reflect the
tubing spec of smaller frames. I look forward to measuring other sizes and
finding out for sure!

That said, since the Hunqapillar, Rambouillet, Roadeo, and Hilsen shown at
that link are all in the same size "neighborhood" it probably does give a
fair idea of the relative differences between the models.

If anyone is around the SF Bay Area and would like their bikes measured,
please drop me a line!

Swung by Riv HQ with some folks after riding Briones yesterday. Will
confirmed that the built-bike in the pictures is a size Large with 650B
wheels. I didn’t look, but one of the other fellas on the ride (John?)
checked out the rims and said they were indeed Cliffhangers.

If you visit Riv and are willing to do some serious climbing consider
Briones! It was lovely. Pictures and stuff:

Great info, thanks Lum. Might I ask where you're quoting from?

I found some (but not all) of that info here:
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1403/7343/files/ROADINI_MAR_8.pdf
(Has a nice Roadeo vs Roadini section.)

I measured an AHH last night that had tapered butting. I measured three
times to make sure I wasn't getting a bad reading! Great to have some
confirmation of Riv using tapered tubes elsewhere. Would love to know where
you found that, and who said it.

I didn't think to measure if the tube itself was tapered. It was luged, so
I imagine not. Wish I'd measured, though!

Thanks Tom! Good find, I'm glad to have that spec sheet. Looks like it goes
with the earlier Toyo Atlantises, before the Atlantis^2?

Of course, the problem now is figuring out which ones those are! I guess
it'd be any Atlantis that doesn't have the "2" on the decals? Would love to
track one down and compare.

I do have another sheet where I track frames I've measured against
published specs. So far things are pretty close...

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Roadeo?

2018-10-02 Thread Reed Kennedy
Spoke with Bruce off-list a bit and he helped me track down this archive of
an old Riv web page that does indeed list the Ram tubing specs:
https://web.archive.org/web/20070513053057/http://rivbike.com/webalog/frames/50074.html

It's listed as .8/.5/.8 OS, exactly as Bruce said. Excitingly, that almost
perfectly matches the measurements I recently took from a 64cm Ram:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XeS2nJhBPSDRbqgG1-F2VOI_vK1QZnZmysARDJWyGps/edit?usp=sharing

I took the measurements before I saw those specs, so that validates my
results nicely.

Hey LeRoy,

You probably know this, but just in case: The Schwalbe tubes come with a
Presta nut with a little raised extra part the diameter of a Schrader hole.
I assume you prefer Schrader valves for reasons of pumps or
standardization, but if you're just worried about fit, fret not. It'll fit
great.

This link has pictures of the three popular converters:
https://bicycles.stackexchange.com/questions/18859/does-valve-stem-diameter-matter-for-my-rims
The Schwalbe one is similar to (but not the same as) the one in the middle.

Food for thought: I weigh 201 pounds and my 61 cm Rawland Nordavinden works
extremely well for me. That frame uses a standard diameter 7/4/7 top tube
and standard diameter 8/5/8 downtube:
http://rawlandcycles.blogspot.com/2012/07/nordavinden-geometry-and-specifications.html

Taking in to account the narrower diameter tubing, this frame is
significantly more flexible than an 8/5/8 oversized frame. Leaves me
wondering: Am I special? Or do folks tend to over-estimate the tubing
needed by larger riders?

I’ll be riding it on the New England Randonneurs Fall Classic 120k this
Saturday. Curious to see how it holds up on an 85% dirt route!

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Roadeo?

2018-10-03 Thread Reed Kennedy
Hey Rod, my subjective experience is similar to yours. My A. Homer Hilsen
has a different feel than my Nordavinden, which in turn feels different
than my MAP. I have subjective thoughts on which of them "feel" fastest,
but none of them hold me back significantly in my non-competitive
randonneuring.

I personally believe that bike fit is by far the most important factor.
After that, running high supple tires seems to make the second biggest
difference. Once I've optimized those two things, having a frame that
flexes in a way that works for me comes third. Weight, within a couple
pounds, comes a distance fourth for me when it comes to optimal performance.

Which is to say, I recommend getting your tires and fit dialed in as
perfectly as possible before you even begin to worry about frame flex or
weight!

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Roadeo?

2018-10-03 Thread Reed Kennedy
Interesting Bruce! That's not what I would have expected. Were the Nord and
the Ram built up and fit similarly?

Curious about the brakes in particular. I originally had my Nord set up
some dual pivot calipers, which I did not like. Power was fair, but
modulation poor. They made me uncomfortable on dirt. I worried I would
jiggle my grip over a bump and lock a wheel. I replaced them with a pair of
Paul Racer M brakes driven by Gevenalle (Tektro) levers, and it is now the
best braking bike I own.

I haven't heard of TIG vs lugs effecting frame flexibility or ride quality
before, but it'd be curious to learn more. Any engineers out there who
would care to comment?

Have fun at the Southern Magnolia Century! That sounds like a lovely place
for a ride.

Great to have those specs, thanks Paul!

For whatever it may be worth, the Roadeo I recently measured came in a bit
lighter than those specs:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XeS2nJhBPSDRbqgG1-F2VOI_vK1QZnZmysARDJWyGps

The differences are large and regular enough that I am confident the frame
I measured doesn’t match the spec, rather than being a measuring error or
somesuch.

Interesting!

As previously mentioned, my SV-9 sounded like this:

Sent it back, and they confirmed it was defective.

My replacement non-defective SV-9 doesn't make any noise, nor do my SON

(Very rarely I can feel a slight vibration through the bars, but it's
unobtrusive. I notice it on maybe 1 out of 5 brevets, and only briefly.)

[RBW] FS/T: Some special jerseys and other wool (larger / taller)

2018-11-12 Thread Reed Kennedy
My shape has changed, and some lovely wool must go. Pictures here:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/WhfFVMVwqnC4bs4z9

All have been washed only with wool safe detergent, laid flat to dry, and
treated with the utmost care. All are in great shape, with any
peculiarities described below.
Buy one and shipping is $8. Buy two or more and shipping is on me.

#1: *Rivendell* green and red short sleeved jersey

   - Marked XXXL, measurements in photos.
   - Made by Woolistic, bought on discount from Rivendell many moons ago.
The tag was cut off before I bought it, I could never figure out why. The
   "Rivendell" embroidery is amazing.
   - This is my favorite jersey. It has been worn a good few times, but was
always treated with great care. It is in wonderful shape. There is only one
tiny repair, where a thread broke at the bottom of the center pocket. This
was done by my mum, who cares as much as about sewing as we do about
   bicycles.
   - As pictured in one of the official Eroica CA photos:
   https://photos.app.goo.gl/6NG5n1mfK596DJtg6
   - I would much prefer to *trade* this for an XL Rivendell jersey or
   other interesting jersey.

#2: *iBOB* green and white short sleeved jersey

   - Marked XXL, measurements in photos.
   - Made by Portland Cyclewear.
   - A lovely jersey that never fit right. I don't think I've worn it. No
   repairs that I can see.
   - $80, or trade for another interesting jersey that's a bit smaller.

#3: *Yazoo *black / red / white jersey

   - Marked XL, measurements in photos.
   - Made by Earth, Wind, and Rider in China.
   - No rear pockets!
   - This is probably the nicest feeling wool of any jersey I own. It is
just luxurious! I don't usually buy made in China garments, but I made an
exception for this one. It is just so nice. No repairs that I can see.
   - $50 or trade.

#4: Le Roc "*Team 5 Sport*" vintage jersey in blue and white

   - Marked size 4-5, measurements in photos. Much smaller than the others
   here!
   - Lovely vintage jersey that appears unworn.
   - Letters on front are raised flocking.
   - $50 or trade.

#5: *Ibex* 1/2 length wool shorts / knickers / tights

   - Marked size Large, length measurement in photos, waste is super
stretchy (I have worn them when I was wearing size 32 jeans and when I have
   worn size 38 jeans.)
   - Original MUSA Ibex from when they had the nice multi-material pad and
   embroidered logo.
   - Ibex shorts (especially these older versions) are my very favorites.
These still fit great but I've come to prefer the shortest and longest
ones. I think I only wore these medium-length ones once. Still next-to-new.
   - $65 or trade.

Preference given to good trades, folks who can pick up in San Francisco or
folks who want multiple items.

For trades things I'm looking for are interesting wool jerseys that fit,
knickers, Campagnolo Doppler shifters, limited edition Brooks saddles, new
production Ideale saddles, Dromarti shoes in size 47 or 48, Huret Duopar
rear derailleur, Compass bits, old French frame pumps with the little hose,
or other fancy, classic, interesting Rivish things.

[RBW] SF Bay Area: Bike camping at Pescadero Creek for the 2018 Swift Campout!

2018-04-12 Thread Reed Kennedy
Hey folks! I'm putting together a Rivish / BOBish bike ride and camping
trip on the San Francisco peninsula for the upcoming 2018 Swift Campout on
June 23rd. All are welcome! These are the longest weekend days of the year.
Why not spend 'em on a bicycle?

Here's the rough plan so far:
Day 1, Saturday June 23rd:

   - Route: *https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27216913
   <https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27216913>*
   - 45 miles, 4,700 ft climbing
   - Head out from Millbrae BART at 10am (meet in front of the elevator,
   near the palm trees)
   - Lunch at Alice's Restaurant
   - There are some dirt trails that parallel Skyline, which we could do or
   not do
   - Last 5 miles are an easy dirt road, rideable on a road bike. We should
be able to ride the whole way to camp, no need to push or carry your bike.
   - Set camp at Tarwater Trail Camp, Pescadero Creek County Park (no water
at camp, bring what you need!)
   - Camp dinner, hang out, sleep in the woods

Day 2, Sunday June 24th:

   - Route: *https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27216975
   <https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27216975>*
   - 29 miles, 2,700 ft climbing
   - Wake up, have breakfast, strike camp
   - First 5 miles are on the same dirt road
   - Stop off at the Cupertino Bike Shop if we're in the mood (super famous
old school bike shop, almost a bike museum)
   - Lunch in Cupertino, Sunnyvale, or Mountain View (In-N-Out?)
   - Caltrain home from Mountain View station

I'm gonna make time to test-ride this route before the campout but so far I
think the above looks pretty swell. I'm excited about it! Also happy to
hear thoughts or advice if you have 'em.

Here's the Swift Campout page for the ride: https://swiftcampout.
com/camper/sofauxboho/

If you'd like to join us for the ride please do! The best way to stay
up-to-date is to join the Bay Area Rivendell Riders mailing list (which is
not just for Rivendell riders these days): https://groups.google.
com/forum/#!forum/bay-area-rivendell-riders

If you wanna come along but don't wanna join another mailing list just drop
me a line. I'll keep you in the loop.

Cheers,
Reed Kennedy

Re: [RBW] WTB 65cm Atlantis

2018-04-16 Thread Reed Kennedy
Not an Atlantis, but I’ve decided I’m ready to part with my 62cm gray and
maroon Hunqapillar. I usually ride a 64cm, but thanks to the very slightly
sloping top tube this one fits my 93.5cm PBH quite well. (The Hunqapillar
flier recommends this size for 91.5 -100cm PBHs.)

This is the original Toyo Hunq with the fancy heat treated tubing.

If you’re interested let me know and I’ll put together some details and
pictures.

Re: [RBW] Rivendell Reader PDF Archives

2018-05-05 Thread Reed Kennedy
Totally reasonable. I've dropped Grant another line asking. I didn't want
to be a pest, but I suppose asking twice in six months probably isn't all
that bad.

I feel conflicted! I gladly downloaded the PDFs you posted, Jim, as it
nearly completes my collection. Happy to do my part and share mine as long
as I know no feelings will be hurt and no $$ will be lost over at RBW HQ.

2018-05-06 Thread Reed Kennedy
Heard back from Grant, and it sounds like he's fine with it! Here's what
I've got:
http://notfine.com/rivreader/

Includes RR 12 - 35 from CDs I picked up at RBW HQ a while back, 1-11 that
Jim just posted, and 41-43 from when Riv made them available on the web a
while back.

Anyone have digital copies of 36 - 40 or 44? I'd be happy to add them and
complete that collection.

One more update! I've now added the last few files folks were kind enough

An index file listing all article titles, which can be searched.
RR00
BOB Gazette #1 and #2

Full credit where credit is due!

Main credit to Grant Petersen, who published these wonderful magazines
and was kind enough to let me share them. Thanks as well to all the
original authors for their thoughtful, helpful, joyous writing.

Additional thanks to:

Will, Vince, Roman and all the other great folks at Riv for supplying
the CDs that got this collection started and just generally being
great people.

Ed Fausto for RR 00.

Martin Gierke for the RR Index and BOB Gazette 1 & 2.

Cyclofiend Jim for RR 1 - 11, 41, and 42.

Shoji Takahashi for RR 36 - 39.

And Grant once again for tracking down 40 and 44.

Re: [RBW] Re: Question off topic mostly

2018-05-17 Thread Reed Kennedy
It depends on what you're looking to accomplish.

I spent thousands of dollars on a custom Bike Friday NWT, dreaming of
having a bike with me whenever I traveled.

After three trips I sold it at a significant loss.

A Friday is almost as much trouble to pack and carry around boxed as a
traditional bike in a Trico case. But when you get where you're going it
won't ride as well as the traditional bike.

I knew that, but bought one anyway because I thought the trailer suitcase
would be magic, allowing me to do easy point-to-point tours, flying in to
one airport and out another. In practice, the trailer was an utter dog to
pull, robbing almost all the joy from my riding. It was fragile as well,
breaking in a couple different ways in not-terribly intense use. It also
doubled the number of flat tires I got. I stopped using the trailer, and
without the trailer there's not much point to a Friday, at least for me.

They do save money on airline fees, though. The only reason I would go back
to a Friday is if I were flying with a bike several times a month on my own
dime.

long as I’m around, which will hopefully be a good long time. The cost of
hosting them is negligible, and I’m happy to cover it.

Please feel free to link, sticky, download, and otherwise share. If anyone
wants to do anything unusual with them (sell them for a profit, print them
in a book, change the content, etc) i would suggest you check with Grant
first, please.

Otherwise, please just read and enjoy!

Best,
Reed

Re: [RBW] Tire Pressure Question

2018-05-24 Thread Reed Kennedy
I run the Grand Bois Cypres EL (marked 30mm) and the Compass Stampede Pass
EL (marked 32mm) interchangeably on my MAP. Both measure almost exactly
32mm when installed on Velocity A23 rims.

60 psi front, 70 psi rear. Rider: 200 lbs. Front load: 5 lbs. Rear load:
None.

Performs great. I'd probably drop those pressures by about 5-10 psi each
for a 35mm tire.

I highly recommend the Edison Gauss tire pressure app (available for both
iOS and Android), which is based on research done by Frank Berto and
followed up by Bicycle Quarterly:
http://www.edisongauss.com/index.php/berto-tire-pressure-app/

I'd seriously recommend against running the pressures shown on the
sidewalls. As discussed here and elsewhere at length, those are maximum
pressures, not optimal pressures. Would be like driving exactly the speed
limit all the time, without regard for corners or conditions. Perhaps
possible, but certainly not ideal.

And in case anyone is curious, here are the tire pressures I run on my
other bikes, similar loads:

32mm: 60 psi front, 70 psi rear
38mm: 45 psi front, 55 psi rear
42mm: 40 psi front, 45 psi rear
48mm: 35 psi front, 40 psi rear

On the 38mm tires and up I'll drop the pressure by up to 10 psi when riding
offroad. (I don't ride the bike with 32mm tires offroad.)

Re: [RBW] Coffee Making Question

2018-05-25 Thread Reed Kennedy
Allow me to share with you my wonderful, boring secret.

A thermos.

Wait! Don't go! Hear me out.

To make coffee while out on the bike, you need a lotta stuff. Stove to heat
the water. Fuel for the stove. Pot to hold the water. Coffee, maybe a
grinder. Filter. Vessel to receive the coffee. Probably water. Maybe more,
if you wanna get fancy or put stuff in the coffee. Even if you go super
minimalist with a Jetboil or the like, that's a bunch of stuff (and a
reasonable amount of complexity and weight.)

I make the coffee at home, season it to taste, put it straight in to a high
quality thermos, and seal it up. Generally it's too hot to drink for the
first hour or two, and just right a couple to a few hours in to the ride.

Thus the procedure is:

   - Find a beautiful place to stop.
   - Stop there.
   - Unscrew lid.
   - Enjoy coffee.

Cheating? Perhaps. Useful for camping? No. But it sure works for me, even
on longer bike rides. I just refill when I ride through any town with a
cafe!

Re: [RBW] Ottolock Initial Reviews???

2018-05-25 Thread Reed Kennedy
I have an older, shorter Ottolock, almost certainly from the first batch. I
am a lucky fellow: I found it in the street last year.

Doubly lucky, because it still had the default combination: 0-0-0. That
matters because I have tried several times to pick it, and have never
managed! I've studied lock picking and physical security a fair amount, and
while I am definitely an amateur I consider myself above average at this
stuff.

I've left a bike locked up with the Ottolock and returned to find that
somebody else had also tried to pick it. (Numbers different than when I
left, bike moved a bit.) None of these fine security testers have managed
to open it either.

I use it for touring and brevets, times I won't be away from my bike long.
As a rule of thumb, I use it anytime I'd be willing to lock up a bike with
an unguarded QR front wheel.

It is seriously small and light!
