Re: [RBW] Re: Covered Bridge Metric Century, Lancaster PA 8/21
I've talked about doing this for years (only 45 min drive away), but just never followed through. Thanks for the heads-up, John. I'll get it on the calendar. If I can make it, I'll either ride my Atlantis or my Prodigal-Rambouillet. Mark -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Is there a trick to reassembling center-pull brake calipers?
I have some older Shimano Tourney center-pulls that I'm going to try on my Ram. I disassembled one of the brakes to clean it up a bit, and now I simply cannot get it back together. The problem is trying to get both springs up under the hooks on the brake bridge. Here are the brakes: http://www.velo-pages.com/main.php?g2_itemId=6928&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 Anyone had to reassemble one of these? Have any suggestions? Thanks! [RBW] Re: Is there a trick to reassembling center-pull brake calipers?
Many thanks for the suggestions, everyone! The best idea I heard was not to take them apart in the first place. ;-) My final solution was to assemble the brakes with the left spring under the hook. I then laid the brake on its left side and applied pressure to the bridge. This compressed the brake and gave me room to work with the other (unhooked) spring. I had tried a few different tools to press/leverage the spring into place but they kept slipping off. Finally, I tried some needle-nose pliers (again), and was able work the spring under the right hook. Re: [RBW] Re: PSA 61cm atlantis frameset on ebay
It might be too small, but it could depend on what sort of standover you'd like. I'm a 90ish PBH, ride a 61 Atlantis with Little Big Bens, and have very little standover. If you're looking for more breathing room, you could probably make a 61cm work with a longer stem and a little more seatpost. [RBW] My stolen Rambouillet
Ouch. Hurts to type the words. Just thought I'd put this out there, in case it shows up on CL/ebay. My 2005 (blue) 58cm Rambouillet was stolen from my (unlocked) garage this past Thursday or Friday. Some of the other identifying characteristics: - Stolen from my garage in Camp Hill, PA (near Harrisburg) - Purchased new from College Park Bicycles in 2005 (still has the College Park sticker) - Berthoud fenders - Velo Orange front/rear racks - Brown B17 - Shimano Nexus front hub w/ fork-mounted light Here's the most recent photo, taken in May: http://cl.ly/image/413t0C1y2C1n If you happen to notice it out there, my aching heart would love to hear about it. Thanks for the kind wishes and help, everyone. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find the file where I kept the serial #. I've been in touch with the shop where I bought it, and they do have paper records that go back that far...it just may take some time to find it. You may be looking to move away from a laptop, but I would recommend the 11" MacBook Air. You can pick up a refurb 11" from Apple for $769, and it includes a full warranty. Of course, the screen jump from 17" to 11" may be a bit much for you. But...you could always connect an external. On Wed, Dec 10, 2014 at 8:13 PM, WETH wrote: > Agreed! [RBW] Adding braze-ons and painting my "new" Rambouillet
Well, it's been three weeks since my blue 58cm Rambouillet was stolen. I had a couple leads, but nothing ever panned out. I'd been spending a lot of time on CL/ebay, and found a 58cm (in orange) that needed a new home. I happened to be visiting family in Ohio this weekend, and was able to pick up the bike locally. The bike has a few scratches/blemishes. While I don't mind "beausage", I'd kinda like it to be my own. To that end, I've thought about having the bike repainted. But before I do that, there's something I thought about changing on this new Ram. The one thing I didn't like about my original Rambouillet was having to use p-clamps for the front rack. Has anyone ever added mid-fork braze-ons to a Rambouillet fork? If so, who did the work, and how did it turn out? Also, anyone with experience with any frame builders or painters in the Central PA region? I'm not opposed to sending the frame/fork off to having the work done, just thinking about local options first. Yep, that's the one! It's set up a little more go-fasty than my original, but I've had a lot of fun riding it around my in-laws' neighborhood. I'm headed back home today, so happy to have it on my roof. Re: [RBW] Re: Adding braze-ons and painting my "new" Rambouillet
Thanks for the color reference! Very helpful. I understand what you're saying about keeping the original orange. The frame paint is not 100% original, though. The original owner had a small dent repaired in the top tube, and the color match is slightly off. It takes the right light to see it, but then it cannot be unseen. Well, it's more obvious when looking at the bike from the side. Standing over the bike and looking down, the color is indistinguishable from the fork crown. Funny you mention that about the brake bridge. The seller pointed it out to me, and had a specially-filed washer to fix the angle. I do not claim to actually know a thing about I take your point, but it wouldn't be a heavy load. On my "old blue", I carried a VO Campagne bag: http://t.co/NZdqKgXIKm And that's all I was thinking to carry on this one. I have been thinking though...I could be content with leaving the frame paint as is, and only adding the mid-fork braze-ons and re-painting the fork. All this is assuming the painter felt they could get a good match with the original orange. I have appreciated all the suggestions about having the fork re-raked...but the more I thought about it, the more I realized I didn't really want to change the bike's "soul." I just wanted to avoid the p-clamps :-) > Peter > (who sold his 58 orange, which was a tad small, then bought a 60 blue, and > then sold the 60 blue to buy a 60 orange, because Rambouillets are intended > to be orange.) Funny thing regarding these sizes. I think I may have been riding a 60cm all these years!!! I've been riding my new-to-me 58 around a little, and have found it very comfortable. I had it leaned up against my garage to take a picture a couple days ago, and I thought to myself, "I don't remember having that much seatpost showing on my old bike. Later, I stumbled on a Topeak frame pump that was always just a hair short to wedge under the top tube on my blue Ram. Lo and behold, it fit just fine on my new orange! I really was sure that my blue Ram was a 58cm, but now it's like I don't know anything anymore. Oh well. Also, I did measure the size of the seat tube on the orange and compared it against Riv's specs for the Rambouillet. It's definitely a 58. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Lifespan of shellac flakes?
Several years ago (maybe five?) I bought some shellac flakes, with the intent of applying shellac to the bars on my original Rambouillet. I just never got around to it. In the process of working on my new-to-me Ram last night, I came upon the flakes in my garage. They've been sealed in a plastic bag, sitting on a shelf in a detached building all this time. So...my question is: Do you think the shellac is still "good"? I know I can just mix it up and try it--but I would like to avoid having to redo it, if the flakes are definitely past their prime. Bump. Two months since my blue Ram was stolen (Camp Hill, PA), but there may have been a sighting this week. This past Wednesday (February 4), a coworker of mine spotted a bike that matched the description of my bike in New Cumberland. He was behind the rider on Beacon Hill Rd near Hillside Elementary, then followed him as he turned left on to Hillside Rd. He said the rider seemed to notice him, so my coworker didn't follow the rider when he turned up Hillside Dr (which is a dead end). Re: [RBW] Polished Dura Ace centerpulls (from Ram/biggest tire/fender thread).
I had just started an email reply to the original thread about those brakes. I'd be interested to hear how well they work with the VO 45s. I just picked up a set of those fenders at a swap last weekend, but they're not going to work with the Ultegra long reach on my 58 Ram. Too crowded. Beautiful, David! Inspired by the earlier thread regarding your DA centerpulls, I picked up some used Shimano Tourney centerpulls from eBay. My intention is to get them cleaned up and installed on my Ram, so that I can use the VO 45 fenders. My question for you, and anyone else that uses *vintage* brakes like these: Since these are nutted brakes, did you do anything special to mount them on your Rambouillet? I sometimes think that, depending on the location, Rivendells can fly "under the radar". I shared this story previously, but my Ram was stolen from my garage back in December. I ended up recovering the bike about six months later, when I was driving through downtown Harrisburg and saw it locked to a bike rack in front of an office building. It was in the possession of a homeless man who was certainly not the thief. He had no idea what the bike could have been worth to an interested buyer. When I got the bike back, dusty, dirty, headlight dangling off the fork, I realized that many people (around here) might look at my bike and think it was some old bike-boom-era 10 speed. Obviously Harrisburg and Philadelphia are two different worlds. And although I started to lose hope of ever recovering my bike, I never stopped looking...every bike rack, every alley, every open garage. Any flash of color that remotely resembled my "Rambouillet Blue" grabbed my attention. So glad she's safe, and I wish her all the best. Re: [RBW] Love the Rambo
+1 I recently went through a similar overhaul with my 2005 Blue Ram. It was stolen back in December, then recovered (by me) in June when I noticed it locked to a bike rack in downtown Harrisburg, PA. I completely disassembled the bike (except for the BB), cleaned every single part, replaced cables, chain, brake shoes, headset bearings, tires, tubes, tape, twine, etc. There's a scratch on the top tube that wasn't there before it was stolen; I'm assuming whoever had it had chained it up to a pole somewhere. Every time I see that scratch, I'm reminded how happy I am to have the bike back, and how much it means to me. Re: [RBW] Re: New to me Rambouillet, with photos
I have so many reasons to be happy: - I recovered my blue Rambouillet - I was able to spend some time on a (marginally faster) orange Rambouillet - I know the orange Ram went to a good home - The orange Ram is still in the area, and I get to see it from time to time - I didn't have to ship it when I sold it! Re: [RBW] Re: Frame pump placement - Rear triangle possible?
I have a Topeak full-size that I use in the rear triangle of my 60cm Ram and my 61cm Atlantis, just like the pics of Sean Hipkin's bikes. I'm not sure of the size of the pump, but I recall using it this way because it was just a hair too short to fit snugly under the top tube of my 60cm Ram. It fits snugly on both the Ram and Atlantis, and I don't use a strap. If I was riding any rough(-er) terrain, I probably would. Re: [RBW] Re: 56cm or 58cm Atlantis
Just another data point: I'm 5'10"-ish, 90-ish PBH, and I ride a 61 Atlantis. This gives me a fistful of seatpost, and I run Albastache bars on a shorter stem (50cm?). I'm pretty comfortable on this, but could probably do a 58 just as well. I think there is only 0.5cm difference in top-tube length between the 58 and 61...at least, there used to be. It probably depends on the vintage. The biggest issue might be standover clearance, as I (and my 90 PBH) don't have a great deal to spare with the Little Big Bens on my bike. If your PBH is 85, you'd really be cutting it close on a 61. [RBW] Appropriate compensation for help with a Craigslist sale?
I know that some folks on the list have helped or have been helped with a CL (or other) purchase where the seller wouldn't ship. I suppose this involves transporting the bike to a nearby shop that would pack and ship, or maybe something else. What's the going rate for assistance like that? Cash? RBW gift certificate? Payment in bike parts? I suppose it all depends on the effort involved. I guess what I'm really looking for your experiences (on either side). All opinions welcome. Thanks! [RBW] Re: Appropriate compensation for help with a Craigslist sale?
Wow! Thanks so much for the many comments and opinions. Would have liked to chime in throughout the day, but things have been crazy. I like the advice from Bobby (and Napoleon Dynamite!): Just follow your heart. That's what I do. I still haven't contacted the seller about shipping (sorta hoping he drops the price a smidge), but I did get in touch with a bike shop in his neighborhood. They said they would pack the bike for shipping for $45. I should have asked what size box they'd have to use (to help me estimate shipping costs), but I forgot. I'm guessing shipping might be ~$80 - $150. Perhaps I wouldn't need any assistance at all...just have the seller get a shipping label, take the bike to the shop, and off it goes. Now to go sleep on it! Thanks again, everyone. [RBW] Re: How was your weekend ride?
I was able to get out for about an hour yesterday, and the weather was great (mid-40s, sunny). I took the time to ride through some of the neighboring towns, searching for my blue Ram that was stolen back in December. There's the faintest glimmer of hope that I might just come across it...someday. Until then, I'm happy on my replacement orange Ram. The best part of yesterday's ride, though, was that it was the first time I've ever ridden my Rambouillet with tires larger than 28s. When I bought my blue Ram in 2005, it was set up with Ruffy-Tuffys. I liked the ride, never had problems, so I just kept replacing them when they wore out. Along the way, I had purchased some white Paselas ('cuz they looked nice), but was never happy with the way they felt. My replacement-Ram came with Conti Gatorskins (28), which seemed nice enough. I gave the white Paselas another try (Cream-sicle Ram!), but was still disappointed. Someone on the list was selling some used Jack Brown (greens) a little while ago, so I picked them up. I finally got around to putting them on this weekend, and out I went Sunday afternoon. Wow! I don't know what I was expecting, but the ride was both comfortable and quick. Now, If I could just get them to fit under those VO 45mm fenders I have in the garage... Mark -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] The one(s) that got away (or, that Atlantis in Cincinnati)
Last week, I asked the group about experiences with purchasing a bike from someplace far away, and having someone assist you with inspection, shipping, transport, etc. Thanks again to all who offered their opinions and stories. The reason I was asking about this: I had seen a 58cm Atlantis complete in Cincinnati (about 460mi away from me) for what I thought was a pretty good price. My real problem, though, is (and has always been) that I hem and haw until the opportunity slips away. And so, it happened again. Contacted the seller last night to see if he'd ship it, or hold on to it until I could get out there, and the bike had been sold on Friday. Still...the CL posting is up...mocking me... Re: [RBW] Stolen Rambouillet UPDATE!
The past few hours have been an emotional roller coaster, to say the least. Driving home from work, I was coming down 2nd street in Harrisburg. I always turn left at Market St, to head over the Market St bridge. There is a bike rack at the corner, and I usually sweep my eyes over, still hopeful that I will find my bike. I literally couldn't believe it when I saw it chained to the rack. I quickly parked on a side street, fed the meter (not enough, as I ended up with a $30 parking ticket), and sat down on the concrete benches outside the Dauphin County Administration Building. Homeless people often hang out here, and many of them gave me a wary eye as I sat there for over two hours. My Ram was one of four bikes chained to the rack when I first arrived. Around 5:30, a kitted-up commuter came out and started to fiddle with the rack. My heart was beating out of my chest, until I realized his was a different bike. Not much happened until 6:00, when someone started serving food to the homeless at the bus station across the street. All of the men that had been sitting near my bike got up and walked over, except for one. I started to get really nervous, thinking that this guy was on to me, but nothing ever came of it. Shortly after that, a man came up to the rack, and unlocked an orange Mongoose MTB. My heart raced again, but now I was just hoping the police would get there before something else happened. With only two bikes left, I noticed that my Ram and a BMX-type bike were actually sharing the same lock. I tried calling Harrisburg police again, but they couldn't give me an ETA on when they would arrive (the HPD is 1.5 blocks from where my bike was found). Frustrated, I tried calling my local PD again, and was able to reach the officer that had originally filed my report, back in December. I talked to him for a few minutes, and he said he would drive over to Harrisburg. Skip forward to almost 7pm. A guy I'd seen hanging around comes over to the rack, and begins to undo the lock. I kept fairly still, sitting 15 feet away, but had the video cam running on my phone. At first I thought he was going to just take the BMX bike and relock my Ram, but then he wrapped up the cable and took both bikes off the rack. Now I was starting to get panicky. I couldn't believe that after six months of missing my bike, and 2 hours of sitting on a concrete bench, that I was going to lose it again. I stood up, only to keep filiming. The guy slowly rolled the bikes across the street, toward the bus station. My heart was sinking. Just then, the officer from Camp Hill (my town) pulled up to the intersection. I waved my arms at him and pointed to the guy rolling the bikes across the street. He saw me, and pulled into the bus station, where the guy had stopped with the bikes. I hung back a little, but was close to enough to hear the conversation. My bike had been in the possession of a homeless man, who had bought it from a hardware store down the street for $30(). The officer talked with him for a while, and then Harrisburg PD finally showed up. The officer from Camp Hill took the bike with him, as I still need to prove that it is mine (didn't have the serial number). The man who had the bike was let go, and the dozen or so homeless people watched it all unfold from the bike rack where my bike had been. The bike has definitely been outside a great deal since it left my garage in December. There are a number of scratches on the top tube, and the Honey B17 looks like it has aged years. The headlight I had mounted to the left side of my fork was dangling, rubbing against the spokes. But to think that the bike I love so much is on its way home...it's almost too much to comprehend. The bike that was my first Father's Day gift in 2005. The bike that has towed our son for hundreds of miles; first in a Burley trailer, then a trail-a-bike. The bike that rode alongside him as he learned to ride on his own. The bike that had given me so much joy, and been part of so many of my memories...is almost mine again. Just got back from the Camp Hill PD, and my bike is now safely in my living room!!! It looks a little rough, but the racks and fenders are still in place, and the shimano Dyno hub and BiSy light still work. Wheels seem true. I'm living in some kind of dreamworld. Thanks to all for your well-wishes! @Johnny: I've had the same thought. I'm pretty certain that the homeless man who had the bike was not the person that stole it out of my garage six months ago, but he may have been protecting the one who did. Still, I think I will stop by Hornung's to see if they might have sold the bike at some point. Re: [RBW] Re: Headset question
As I've gone through the process of completely tearing down and re-building my stolen-but-now-recovered Rambouillet, I noticed the headset felt a bit rough. This is the same Ultegra Headset the OP is talking about, I think. None of my local shops could get the cartridges, so I did the trick that Bill mentioned (swap top and bottom). That definitely improved the situation, but it's still not as smooth as it could be. @Tim: If you don't go for those cartridges on eBay that Anton mentioned, I will probably jump on them. Re: [RBW] Mt. Desert Island, ME & Acadia cycling tips
Erl: My wife, son, and I will be there near the end of this month. She'll be riding her Atlantis, and I may also be riding mine (or my Ram). Anyway... +1 to the comments on riding up Cadillac Mtn. We were there around nine years ago, and I really enjoyed the ride up. If you want to ride up to see the sunrise, however, it might be a little dark ;-) There is also the Park Loop Road (I think that's what it's called), which does just what it sounds like. Could be crowded, I guess. The last time we were there it was in the month of October, and it wasn't too bad. I just picked up an Esbit stove today, and am looking forward to making coffee somewhere along the carriage roads in a few weeks. I will admit that the time I rode the loop road, it was probably 8-9 yrs ago, and in the month of October. At that time, I didn't have any issues with parked cars. [RBW] Stopped by Harris Cyclery, saw black/cream
We're on our way up to Maine, so I had to stop by Harris and replace my 11yo t-shirt. Unfortunately, they were out of my size. I did get to see a built-up black/cream 2TT Sam, however, which WAS in my size. Beautiful. Re: [RBW] Orange Rambouillet at Holmes in Camp Hill PA
Haha! That's probably mine, Johnny. When my blue Rambouillet was stolen back in early December, I immediately took to CL and eBay to see if it would pop up. I soon noticed an orange Ram near Dayton, OH. It definitely wasn't mine, but it did get me thinking about having an orange one. The owner had listed the bike on CL - Dayton, and also eBay. I ended up bidding on the bike on eBay and won the auction. I was already planning being in Columbus (~1.5hr from Dayton) the following week, so I asked the seller to hold it. Picked it up a week or two later. Anyway, I know a couple guys at Holmes, and one of them (a mechanic) had asked if he could borrow my orange Ram for an "extended test ride." That was a couple weeks ago, and he still has it. So...if you've seen (or heard about) an orange Rambouillet there, it's almost certainly mine. Of course, I just recovered my stolen Rambouillet a little over a month ago (still can't believe it), so I now have "an extra." What's your local shop? Pedal Pusher, by any chance? Good group of guys over there. Re: [RBW] Orange Rambouillet at Holmes in Camp Hill PA
@Johnny: The guys at Pedal Pusher are great. Several years ago I had a chain break (bad installation on my part), which led to the chain wrapping in the rear wheel, bending the derailer hanger, and snapping my rear fender (Giles Berthoud) in half. The shop I normally went to was too backed up to get my hanger fixed in the time I needed, so I took it over to PP. They were able to straighten the hanger (Yay, steel!) and thanked me for giving them a chance to work on my bike! Also, I checked the Covered Bridge ride, and it looks like it's all booked up. Good luck on the ride. We'll have to get together sometime for a Central PA Riv ride. @Peter The orange IS faster. Of course, it's set up a bit different. My blue is a 60, mostly stock 2005-era Riv build (Araya rims w/ 105s, Sugino XD2 triple, Ruffy-Tuffys). The orange is a 58 and has Chris King Classics, Velocity Aeroheads, Jack Browns, TA double, Dura-ace FD/RD. While I did always want an orange Ram, getting my original blue back has shown me that the blue one is really _my_ bike. I plan on selling the orange at some point, but I'm still deciding on what parts I might like to move over. :-) And truly, I think the 60 fits me a little better. Re: [RBW] Re: Local Rivendell Dealer suggestions for DELMARVA area?
I'll second everything Alan just said. We stopped in yesterday too, for the first time. We started our day driving down to College Park (from Harrisburg), so that my wife could test-ride the Betty Foy at College Park Bicycles. It ended up being a little too small, but still a beautiful bike. After a few hours at the DC Pen Show in Tyson's Corner (fountain pens, anyone?), we made our way to Frederick, so that we could visit Gravel and Grind. We had some fantastic iced coffee, good conversation with the owners, and I picked up a pair of Compass Stampede Pass tires, coffee beans and some socks for my wife. James (one of the owners) said they were planning a "Classic Bike Show and Swap" on 27-Sep (http://gravelandgrind.com/basketful-rad-stuff/). I think we'll try to make it down for that. [RBW] Going to be in SF, looking for the "Rivendell Experience"
I'm going to be in San Francisco most of next week, and would love to visit Rivendell. I'm going to be pretty busy with work in the day, though, and it looks like Riv HQ is only open until 4pm. My question to those in the know: Since Riv BB&H is open a bit later, and would be much easier to reach before closing time, is that enough RIvendell for one person's visit? Or am I doing myself a disservice by not adjusting my work schedule to make it to Riv HQ? Also, I will not have a car, and would need to take public transportation from the city. Re: [RBW] Re: Confused by Nitto
Michael: I've long had the VO Randonneur front rack on my 60cm Ram (attached with p-clamps), as well as the VO Constructeur on the rear. I've always run Giles Berthoud SS fenders under them, attached at the racks' fender mounts. Functionally, I've never had a problem with the racks. The finish/welds were never up to Nitto standards, to my eye. Of course, I bought these many years ago (eight, maybe?). They may have improved now. These days, if I was buying VO again, I might lean toward the Constructeur on the front. I'm less interested in using p-clamps than I used to be, and there are no mid-fork eyelets on my Ram.
