I love that Waterford. My size too! Did you have it made or found it
second-hand? Do you happen to know the stack/reach on it?

[RBW] Zero-rise Albatross Bar?

2022-10-28 Thread Kieran J
I'm looking for a handlebar that's very much like the Alba bars but flat/no
rise. Essentially an Alba-size porteur.

Anyone have any suggestions? The Choco bars are close but not quite flat.

I've tried the Albastache before - it's a very different bar with a lot of
forward sweep and less backsweep. They also only accept road levers.

Yeah, these could work. I wish they came in silver without the logos - not
Surly's MO, I suppose.
I could always invert the Albas I already have, but the aesthetics would

I've got some stuff to change on it but i am super excited.

The grey 'homer' is indeed a 650b canti bike. Prob a saluki as Bill
 suggested. Paint was really nice.

The Ram also had 650b wheels with long reach brakes at the bottom of
the slots. Also had nice, presumably custom, paint.

The Curt was a beautiful bike. Had 700x38 tires with fenders. Looked
like it would clear a little bigger with fenders. Maybe a 42 or 45 without.

The Riv custom had 26" wheels. Tires that were on it were 35 or 38.
Again could probably fit a 42 or 45 but not much more.

All the bikes are in the 60cm range with top tubes between 57-59. The
seller, Steve, was super nice and I'm sure would be happy to provide
whatever info someone may be looking for if you give him a ring. He didn't
seem keen on shipping the bikes because of how big of a pain it is (i feel
him on that), but I bet he'd be open to delivering to a local shop to
 arrange shipping.

Thanks for posting Kyle - these are great.

I noticed your Cascadia Super Gravel post and then realized I rode a lot of

Enjoy your time in France. One of my bucket list trips is cycling from

Re: [RBW] Ride Reports (PNW and France)

2023-08-11 Thread Kieran J
Yep I plan on going back again (will be my third year). See u there :-D I
was there with my sister and she has already sold the event to some of her
CX buddies. The ranks are growing! I don't normally do paid organized
races/events like that, but it's a special one for sure.

Looking forward to seeing/reading more about your FR escapades!

Best,
Kieran

My favourite FD for this type of scenario is the Dura-Ace 7400 double. It
works amazing on a compact wide-range crankset. Cheap as chips too.

It's a White Industries VBC with 46-28. FD is IRD compact triple

Any suggestions for different FD? May need different chain rings
because of that big jump, but if I do that, I may be best off buying
 something else and selling these.

[RBW] FS: 68cm Creamsicle Orange Rivendell Rambouillet F/F/HS/Brakes

2021-05-05 Thread Kieran J
Hi all,

Thinking about putting my 68 orange Ram frameset up for sale. I've owned
this since around 2014 and having a hard time moving it on but so it goes.

Listing it as a F/F/HS along with a set of Tektro R539 brakes.

66cm C-C seat tube
62cm C-C top tube
Fits a 700x35c tire comfortably

It's in overall decent condition with plenty of wear and tear. Most
notably, it has a minor ripple in the top tube where something bumped it
and some damage to the seat cluster as well (all prior to my ownership).
It's visible but nothing serious. Also has some chainsuck wear and scrapes
near the BB. The original Ultegra 6500 headset is in good shape and the
brakes show some rust on the springs and they need new pads.

Pics here: Google Link

Thinking USD$700 plus shipping within North America. Probably via
BikeFlights but I don't know exactly how much it would cost. I have some
bike boxes and I'm happy to box it up myself.

Send me a PM if you are interested.

Thanks,
Kieran

[RBW] Re: Schmidt Wire with B&M Lights?

2021-05-07 Thread Kieran J
Agree with Ian about ordering what you need from PWC. They have everything
you need (and then some) and are very cheerful to deal with.

I find the B&M wiring easier to work with because it's smaller in diameter
and the conductors are easy to separate and terminate. The Schmidt co-ax
requires a bit more effort and precision to put the connectors on. The main
tool you need is some decent wire strippers from just about any hardware
store.

I have never bothered to use solder to terminate them. Even sloppy crimps
with pliers will do the job with some heat shrink over it. It's good skill
to have, even at the 'crapsmanship' level, if you plan to run custom
lengths inside fork legs, inside fender lips, etc.

You might also consider scoping for a set of vintage alloy Nitto hi-riser

Pair those with a long Technomic, would be great for trail bombing and
would have hand positions similar to the Bullmoose.

I'm on a tall Ram with the Jack Brown Greens, and the ride is fabulous. I
use a small saddlebag, and sometimes add a Loafer bag on the Mark's Rack. I
would recommend 700x30 or 32 (or 33.33) with the Ram, as long as you
are not planning on fenders. With Berthoud fenders, I struggled to fit even
a 28mm tire comfortably.

Not sure what the fender clearance is for the San Marcos.

Haven't had any troubles with them. As others have noted, I used a
different hanger and Avid Tri-dangle straddles as opposed to the stock

The brakes themselves are pretty good, geometrically, aesthetically and
function-wise. Nice value.

Re: [RBW] Rambouillet or San Marcos

2013-10-17 Thread Kieran J
I also have an orange one (66cm) and maybe 35mm Paselas would be the max,
without resulting in only a few mm of clearance, which is a little iffy,
expecially if mixed terrain is your game.

In looking for a used Ram frame, I'm not sure how one could know which
brake bridge height you had (lower vs. higher), apart from the colour,
which seems to be at least part indication of the frame's age (orange, then
blue, then green I think?). Are there any existing data points, such as
axle-to-brake bridge measurement, that distinguish the early and later Rams
and their respective tire clearances?

+1 on the R559. They are pretty much perfect for this type of application,

Yes, but sometimes someone else, by bidding early, has effectively occupied
that sweet place in the bidding, thereby 'taking your spot' up to the point
that bids are too high and its no longer a deal. I also usually wait until

[RBW] Pre-Repainting Tasks?

2013-11-12 Thread Kieran J
Hey peeps,

I'm thinking about having my orange Ram repainted, and am wondering a
couple of things:

- How is the headbadge affixed? Is it held on with adhesive? Can i used the
old heat+dental floss to get it off? Or is it riveted on or some such?
- Does Riv supply replacement decal kits for all their models, including
the Ram? I'm sure someone here has ordered a set- do I just send an email
and ask them nicely?

Thx

[RBW] Re: Pre-Repainting Tasks?

2013-11-14 Thread Kieran J
Yeah, we'll have to differ on that. The paint is in rough shape, but I'm
also looking at the repaint as an opportunity to move to more elegant/less
garish colourway. Midnight blue, blood red or even pea green maybe. We'll
see.

Some days, I like the orange; others, it makes me think "2003".

[RBW] Re: Which RBW Velosophies have worked for you? Which haven't?

2013-11-20 Thread Kieran J
Pretty much agree with the general thoughts expressed here so far, although
the only Rivendell I have is a Rambouillet with Jack Browns and a couple
small bags front and rear, so more towards the road end than some of
the 4X4-type Rivs. Man, I enjoy that bike.

In addition to the classic aesthetic, the Brooks saddles, the wool and
cotton tape, I appreciate the high-and-back riding stance that Grant seems
to champion. I've always felt that I like a lot of setback for the saddle,
with my butt a ways back from the pedals, and the handlebars at or slightly
below the saddle and on a stem of reasonable length, so I don't feel
lunge-y. It just feels like a natural riding position for me personally.

Some of Grant's design choices don't appeal to me, but overall, I really
buy into the casual, human approach to bike riding. Functional, durable and
enjoyable to pilot, with just the right amount of nerd styley flourishes to
enchant.

I've also made a switch a few years ago from darker roasts to mediums

trying Costa Rican Tarrazu (earthy, nutty) and El Salvador Finca

Ah yes, I see it now. I was looking at an older, different post, which
pointed to this auction (same seller):

Redwood

Maybe the seller had two similar Redwoods? I like this latest one better.

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet conundrum

2014-04-05 Thread Kieran J
I'll echo what Andy has said, in that I keep a minimal stable and also that
I find my Ram works for me.

Mine is a 66cm, so perhaps a different frame flex feel factor than the same
bike might have in the smaller sizes. It's possible the Ram's OS tubing is
more compliant in the taller versions (no DTTs here, darn it). I ride mine
on all kinds of terrain, so a bit of robustness is welcome, considering its
duties.

I run mine with Jack Brown Greens, and it's been fast and fun. No
complaints really, except my outstanding wonderin's of whether it will
accept those new Compass phatties ...

[RBW] Re: Using my Sam as a commuter

2014-04-09 Thread Kieran J
Blakcloud, you and me both know the knarly streets of Toronto eats nice
bikes for breakfast. I too have gradually eased my stress on having a bike
stolen and/or damaged when out and about, but it has taken awhile. I've
only had a bike stolen once - an old Bianchi that I thought I had locked
up, but hadn't (at Yonge and Dundas Square where all the crackheads hang
out, no less). So more on me than anyone else. D'oh!

I also get the desire to ride a bike you like. My 95% of riding (commuting)
is done on a too-small Cross Check, which certainly is my least-fav bike in
my stable. On top of that, I have a porteur rack and big Wald on the front
of it, which needless to say, does not improve the handling. BUT! if
something happened to it, I would also be the least upset and would get
over it. I also rode it right through the winter, and had few
qualms exposing it to all of that hell.

After riding the Ram all weekend, it sure was hard going back onto that
Surly tank Monday morning. But so it goes..

Great stuff! I'd heard of Bunyan before, but never really taken a look.
Awesome photos!

[RBW] Re: Riv-ish Ride Down the CA Coast

2016-05-04 Thread Kieran J
So pretty! I remember driving and camping along that stretch of HWY 1 a few
years back. Even though it was mid-summer, it was stunning, and cold as
heck too!

I can't imagine riding it, that would be a blast.

[RBW] Re: Where to buy bar-end shifters, advice on interesting derailleurs

2016-05-12 Thread Kieran J
I did this as well, using the 7700 levers and the adapter washers from Riv.
This was on Noodles, and then Albastaches.

I didn't like it in the end - the shifting wasn't as silky as a straight-up
Shimano 9spd BE unit, more of a BRAPP! indexing action. And in the lowest
gears on the Albas, the lever would be pointing upwards into my wrist. Gah!

[RBW] Re: good blug post on rim and disk brakes

2016-05-13 Thread Kieran J
Great post, I always enjoy Grant's writings.

Physics aside, I don't completely buy his staunch position on disks. I
would certainly consider disks on future bikes (a serious dirt bike, my
next winter slushmobile). I imagine disk brakes (or some of them at least)
are adequately user-serviceable once you learn how.

That said, I do feel like dual pivot/canti brakes have always done the job
well in most cases and I know how to adjust them them they need it. I won't
be turning my back on them anytime soon.

Goo Gone or any citric acid based cleaner, such as Citra Solv.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Tandem

2016-06-21 Thread Kieran J
That's the way I see it. It's a fun and versatile all-rounder of a bike,
not a traditional road-touring bike the way most tandems seem to be. That
said, I do wonder how it would ride with some nice plump Compass Switchback
Hills on it

 >>I believe Grant has suggested the lower profile Chocos for the captain
and Boscos for the stoker as being one good choice for this bicycle.

I think it's actually the other way around, with the Chocos for the stoker.
I could also see a moustache or albastache bar being great for the rear
position.

Personally, I don't know if I'll ever go back to drops on any of my bikes.
It's funny - of all the bars I've tried, I found them to provide by far the
least degree of control. Mind you, I did grow up riding MTBs rather than
road bikes.

[RBW] Re: RBW List takes over West Point Inn

2016-06-29 Thread Kieran J
What a magical meet-up! I rode to the Inn (solo) once a few years back and
the mystical, contemplative nature of the place is to me very obviously
conductive to a gathering like this one. A real scenic balcony perch to
reflect on life with no annoying cars or throngs around.

Can't wait to get back to Marin this year - wish my timing could have
synced with this fun looking thing !

[RBW] Re: Hubbuhubbuh tandem Pre-order is live

2016-07-06 Thread Kieran J
I really wanted to get in on it but my yearly bike budget is beyond blown
and we have a big trip in the works. I was all for it at first but then
levelheadedness got the better of me ...
