WTB 25.4mm clamp riser-type handlebar. Examples include Answer Alumalite

Looking for 40-60mm of rise. 550mm+ width.

The offerings for new bars with my specs are very affordable, however, I
try to buy used whenever possible. These will be going on a mid-90s

2012-04-26 Thread C.J. Filip
5'10," PBH 85-85.5cm, saddle height 75cm. My 56cm Atlantis fits great
but lately I have been wanting a 58. Hearing that individuals with
slightly "lower" PBH's than my own is firmly supporting my hunch that
58cm may be the way to go.

Soapscum - do you know for sure what type of riding you will want to
do with the Atlantis? I ask because lately I have been using mine as
a mountain bike on smooth but technical singletrack here in north
Idaho and wonder if the larger frame coupled with 700c wheels might
make trail riding a little trickier considering the boys downstairs.
Also, ask yourself what width tires you will use. I run 50mm actual
Michelin Country Dry2 ($13 each! 600g) and they subtract from
standover significantly.

[RBW] WTT 56cm Atlantis

2012-05-01 Thread C.J. Filip
The fine tuning of fit on my beloved 56cm Atlantis has finally reached
the point where I think I need a larger frame. Saddle height keeps
going up, a setback post has been added and a longer stem is desired
and I still want to stretch out more!

Looking to trade the frame/fork, headset (cheap but awesome Tange),
and wheels for a 58 or 61 Atlantis or 59 AHH frame. Might consider
the 58 650B Hilsen, Saluki/Hiluki. No S&S couplers since I have an
[ignorant] mental block about them.

The wheels are (26"/559 just in case) 32h Salsa Delgado 22.5mm rims
laced to silver Chris King hubs front and back. The frame is in very
good condition and straight, no dents, dings, just a few spots on
right side of the top tube and right fork leg where it looks like it
rubbed a bike rack. The headbadge also has two nicks in the enamel in
the sails.

"Lobo" model here. Actually don't use the bladder much, opting to put
in an extra water bottle and more food instead.

Right now the bladder is in the freezer and if I use it again it will
get a squirt of lemon juice to cover up the beach ball taste.

On centuries where I'm not likely to come across a convenience store,
I'll take along the large saddle-mounted Baggins and stick the bladder
in there. On breaks you can drink from the hose and refill your caged
water bottles from there.

Rene,

Can you comment on toe overlap between the different forks on your
Atlantis. It looks like you ride a 58cm and have a small amount of
overlap here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/6617229451/in/photostream/.
Very curious to know if the low-trail fork eliminates any TCO as I'm
casually considering going up to a 58 from 56 Atlantis.

[RBW] Re: widest Atlantis 700c tire??

2012-06-10 Thread C.J. Filip
Not that this answers the OP's question specifically but for the
benefit of future searches.

Currently running 52mm, 50mm actual Michelin Country Dry2 (my favorite
cheapies) tires. Just barely fitting between the fork and tire is a
Planet Bike Cascadia (ATB version?) fender. It's very tight. No
problems with clearance in the rear. You could run a wider rear tire
and correspondingly wider fender. I probably run a wider tire than I
should with the fender combo. Will probably go with 50mm Supremes
next since it seems most get a 46mm actual width.

Re: [RBW] Which bike gets the winter tires?

2013-12-15 Thread C.J. Filip
I ride a '95 Independent Fabrication mtb with studded tires during the
northern Idaho winters. The rear wheel has an WI ENO (eccentric) hub for
use as a single speed and I've found fixed winter riding to be exhilarating
and sobering all at the same time. In summer the tires get switched out
and the wheel flipped to the freewheel threaded side for dedicated mtb use.

When it snows the deep lugs of the tires are a necessity. Then the snow
gets packed or there's black ice, the studs are a necessity. I've been
riding the same tires for 4 years.

[RBW] Re: When to tighten Brooks adjustment bolt on saddle? 2 questions.

2014-05-07 Thread C.J. Filip
My short answer would be when tensioning it laterally with cord loses it's
intended result. I tensioned my ~2000 B17 and it initially felt tighter but
soon went back to feeling overly hammocky on my groin. For now, cord is all
I'll use to keep it propped up to where I like it and so far so good. I expect
to have to tension it via the bolt in the distant future, which amounts to 1-2
years with my riding habits.

[RBW] FS: 66cm Peter Mooney

2011-12-23 Thread C.J. Filip
For sale is a 66cm Peter Mooney. A phone conversation with the
builder revealed the tubeset is Columbus SP and the frame was built in
'77 or '78. SN:064.

Seat tube: 66cm
Top tube: 60cm
Stand over: 89cm

A mix of Riv-ish components, all in very serviceable condition.
PLENTY of space between tubing and tire. There are eyelets on the
dropouts but no other braze-ons for fenders or a rack.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/69091655@N08/?hide_photostream_welcome=1

There is a small spot of rust (bubbling paint) on the left chainstay
just behind the bottom bracket.

I have been commissioned to sell this bike for a friend of mine. Him
and I have agreed to a starting asking price of $1000, o.b.o. Buyer
pays shipping.

Thanks

My 56cm Atlantis is everything I want in a bike. I do not miss the
quicker acceleration and handling of my 19# steel road bike with
clearance for 23mm tires and horrible racey geometry because I was

I run everything from 37mm to 55mm tires on it. It goes down or up
any singletrack trail. I haul groceries. It is my camper/RV. It
looks great. It is durable and I intend to ride it for quite some
time into the future.

[RBW] Re: recent Atlantis changes

2012-02-24 Thread C.J. Filip
When trying to judge the approximate age of an Atlantis my eyes go
straight to the lugs adorning the head tube. There seem to be at
least three different lug styles used in production models. The fork
lugs and braze-on additions seem to have been changed at a different
"pace" than the main lug set.

As my RR collection gets more complete, I'd like to make a timeline.
This will show and prove absolutely nothing but hopefully will be
appreciated by Atlantis fan-boys and girls.

To add and perhaps vindicate those responsible for the now several
batches of Atlanti, perhaps Grant or whoever just got bored with the
lug style at the time and had it changed (I would). Perhaps a run of
a batch lugs was discontinued. The Atlantis is the longest running
model after all. Do other models show lug differences over time? The
AHH is getting to be a mature model in the line-up and if any of my/
our theories are true a difference in lug style ought to show up
eventually.

Re: [RBW] WTB/try/ect 650B wheels

2012-02-29 Thread C.J. Filip
I actually do want to run narrower (40-44) tires and have a
more aesthetically pleasing wheel profile while doing so. Can't get
fenders to fit right, without a lot of extra fabrication and spacer work,
with tires less than 50mm wide.

Beautiful. Looks darn near perfect!

I often wonder if Grant were to design the Atlantis now instead of
1998ish if he would use 650B over 26".

[RBW] Re: A new tent for bicycle camping?

2012-03-31 Thread C.J. Filip
Used a Big Agnes "Seedhouse" for a number of years backpacking. It
was plenty light enough, probably too light since the aluminum poles
kept splitting at the ends. IIRC the Seedhouse may have been in the
low three-pound range so your poles might be a little beefier. Big
Agnes replaced the poles without hassle or questions.

The Hilleberg tents that Grant and former employee Daniel rave about
are some of the highest quality you can buy yet the weight is right
there with your Lynx Pass.

I'm happy to get 3 seasons out of my backpacking and outdoor gear in
general. $100 would be money well spent if you stay dry, nothing
breaks or rips and you get some good use out of it, IMHO.

[RBW] WTT: 14-34 5-speed freewheel

2013-04-01 Thread C.J. Filip
This 5-speed 14-34t Suntour freewheel is from an '86 Bridgestone T700. I
replaced the original derailler (XT Deerhead) with a 90's XT model and even
with a longer B-tension screw, the new derailler just can't accommodate the
34t cog.

I'd like to trade for a 30t or 32t max high gear 5-speed freewheel.
Doesn't have to be Suntour. I'll throw in the Deerhead derailler if
sprucing it up for a period-specific resto is your thing.

Re: [RBW] Re: What's that response called, and which model has it?

2013-04-05 Thread C.J. Filip
Don't forget the 60 and 62 that the Saluki came in before the notion of the
"Hiluki." As far as bigger tires, most my early 59cm Hilsen could fit was
38mm w/ fenders. My #14 60cm Saluki fits Hetres with fenders.

Back on topic, I feel my current steed, the Saluki is stouter than the
Hilsen. Maybe it's the wheels, but that doesn't really make sense because
I don't leave the ground. I measure my frames ability to "plane," or judge
them to lack it based on their ability to tour with moderate loads, and the
Saluki is no slouch for that kind of thing, better than my former 59cm
Hilsen.

I used to downhill on a 8" suspension travel bike. While my transition to
Rivs has mellowed me, I still like to go fast down swoopy, rutted, and
water-barred trails and fire/logging roads. These well-made overbuilt
parts haven't let me down yet.
