[RBW] FS: MUSA Shorts & Ibex Shirts

2024-08-01 Thread Bob K.
Hi Everyone,

I am moving and need to offload stuff I haven't been using. Selling
everything together because I don't have time or headspace to ship multiple
places on multiple days. Here's what I have. See pictures here.

-Two pairs MUSA shorts, size M. They're in good, not perfect shape. Lots of
use left!
-Three Ibex shirts, size L--one with long sleeves, two with short. There
are a couple of small moth holes. Still very nice shirts, I promise!
-One Ibex cycling "jersey" (?), size M. Small moth holes. It's a bit small
for me (I'm a tweener M/L).
-Bonus (or not): A pair of padded shorts I wore once. Size M. You can
donate them if you don't want them, or I won't send them along if you tell
me, "Donate them yourself!"

How about $125 plus buyer pays actual shipping? Seems more than fair based
on prices I've seen on list, but please tell me if I'm way off base.

Thanks,

Bob in Baltimore

[RBW] Re: WTB: Riv-ish Kids Bike (20")

2020-05-21 Thread Bob K.
Thanks for the info on Cleary, Nathan! I'll look into it.

Yes, the $200 price range is perhaps a bit optimistic. I would really like
to stick with well cared for used bikes if at all possible, though, and
then I can pass it along to another lister in a few years.

Thanks again,

[RBW] FS: Shimano Bar End Shifters, Brake Levers, Derailleurs

2022-06-16 Thread Bob K.
Hi Everyone,

I used to post often but haven't in quite some time. Hope it's OK that I
list a few parts for sale. Local pickup (Baltimore) preferred. Prices are
OBO and do not include shipping (although I am happy to ship at your
expense). If I'm off on a price, please just let me know. Paypal F/F,
please.

Pictures found in this Google Drive folder

.

Thanks for any interest. Please reply off-list.

Shimano Tiagra Road Levers: Short-pull. Good, not perfect, condition. $30.

Shimano Ultegra Bar End Shifters, 8-Spd (#1): Beat up but still function
well. Mounts included. $35.

Shimano Ultegra Bar End Shifters, 8-Spd (#2): Nicer with only a couple
scuffs. Mounts included. $60.

Shimano Deore FD-M591: This is a "traditional dual-pull multi-clamp front
derailleur." I don't remember why I own this, but it sure seems like a
front derailleur! $15.

Shimano Deore RD-M591: Good shape. It's long-cage and 9-spd. I used it with
friction levers on a vintage MTB build for a few months. $30.

I was either off on my prices or the world is ending and no one needs bar
ends. I'm guessing it's the former.

Everything is still OBO, and I lowered the prices and/or included shipping.
Here's what's left. Please message directly with interest. Thanks! -Bob K.

[RBW] Re: ISO inexpensive but decent utility bike; possible large BMX or possibly city bike with kickback hub

2018-07-21 Thread Bob K.
I know you said used, but Fairdale makes some pretty bulletproof and versatile
bikes for cheap. Bonus with new for a rider with less desire to pick up a
wrench is that most bike shops (at least my LBS) offer some sort of a service
plan for the first year to keep it running well.

https://store.fairdalebikes.com/pages/2018-fairdale-bikes/

My buddy just got a Fairdale Weekender and he loves it. That’s $800, but there
are a few in the $500 range that might be great.

The Flat Bar Surly Crosscheck is around $800 and it comes with a rack.

The more I hear about this bike, the more I like it. I almost wish I didn’t

two wheelsets) to about face. Oh, well. Psyched to be able to live vicariously

Re: [RBW] Recommended Mixed Surface Tires for Not-Too-Technical Riding?

2018-07-28 Thread Bob K.
I’ve never tried the Compass offerings, but I just went on a 200 mile gravel
and forest road tour on 27.5x2.25 Thunder Burts, and they are
awesome—fast-rolling, enough grip, no flats. I was running them tubeless,
though, so the no flats part was expected.

[RBW] Re: Dynamo Lights - Sinewave, IQX, Schmidt?

2018-08-19 Thread Bob K.
I use a Sinewave Beacon on and off-road and love it. Highly recommended!

As an aside, I have read about symmetrical and asymmetrical beams before, but I
don’t really understand why I shouldn’t use a symmetrical beam on-road. Isn’t
the light still far less bright than, say, a car’s headlights? Can’t I just aim
the beam bit more at the ground than I would off-road so it doesn’t shine in
drivers’ eyes? I’m open to being way wrong here, so any explanations are
appreciated!

[RBW] Re: '09 Sam Redux

2018-03-27 Thread Bob K.
Thanks, folks. And it's always great to get a solid APPROVE from Bill.

I wanted to add that this is my first foray into the world of Silver Shifters,
having switched over from friction shifting with Shimano barcons. So far, I
much prefer the feel of the Silvers, especially the wonderful little ratcheting
action. Perhaps my favorite friction shifters ever are the super cheap-o
Sunrace thumbies that can be had on Amazon for about $5, mostly because of the
feel of the ratcheting. While the Silvers are slightly more subtle, they give
just enough feedback to set themselves apart from smooth/no-ratchet friction
shifters like the Shimanos--that is, if you're set on friction and don't
want/need an indexing option.

And so, if you've been on the fence about trying Silvers, I'd say that you
should give them a go. I'm glad I did.

Re: [RBW] How heavy a front load on lowriders on a Rivendell road bike?

2018-04-30 Thread Bob K.
I’m not sure as to the actual weight that I’ve loaded up front in lowriders on
my Sam for tours, but it’s been significant, and almost definitely 20ish+
pounds. The handling is slower, yes, but is there a bike that doesn’t handle
more slowly with 20-25 pounds in front panniers? It would certainly be a bit of
a liability in an emergency situation when I needed the bike to handle as
nimbly as possible, but that’s par for the course in my experience.

For the record, I always balance out the load with 8-10 or so pounds in a
Porcelain Rocket Mr. Fusion seat pack. And I, like Jeff, find that I get used
to the altered handling rather quickly. I’ll send pictures of the setup a bit
later if I get to it.

[RBW] Anyone in the DMV have a 51 or 55 Hillborne I could test ride?

2018-05-02 Thread Bob K.
Hi Alan,

I know this isn't what you asked for in your post, but as armchair bike fit
specialist, I'd say based on the amount of exposed seatpost in your photo that
the bike technically "fits" you. That doesn't mean you wouldn't feel more
comfortable on a different size, of course. Yours could also be the one with a
longer (59?) top tube, which would definitely make me feel pretty stretched
out, too. Mine has an effective 57.5 and it feels pretty good with drops and an
80mm stem. I have more seatpost exposed than you, though.

[RBW] Re: 26er vs 29er

2018-06-12 Thread Bob K.
Erik,

I agree that those Hunqapillars look great! You should get one. They fit up to
2.5” tires according to some reports here. That’s straight up comfy-town on
trails.

I will say, though, that we’re the same size (if I remember right) and I really
enjoy my Surly Troll shod with a Jones bar, i40 rims, and 26x3” tires for
off-road touring. It’s nimble and super comfortable in ways that the Surly
Krampus with 29x3” tires wasnt. The 26” platform is great off-road in the plus
sizes, and it’s definitely not dead! I am also building a 27.5” wheelset with
WTB i25 KOM rims and 27.5x2.25 Thunderburts to swap on for dirt road tours and
riding when I don’t need the full plus-sized tires. I only mentioned the Troll
because you mentioned other Surly bikes. IMHO, it’s far superior to the Bridge
Club, which seems like a very middle-of-the-road bike to me.

I’m sure anything you buy will be awesome, and the Hunq would satisfy your
desire for another Riv. I say go for it.

[RBW] Re: Why not a suspension-corrected fork/frame?

2018-06-15 Thread Bob K.
Tom,

I ride very rocky, rutted, rooty, and washed out trails here in MD with a good
bit of elevation change—generally 100 feet of gain per mile on average, and
often more. My steed is a non-suspension-corrected Surly Troll with 26x3.0
tires. I love the ride and handling to and from the trails, and I never feel
limited on the trails themselves.

I’ve ridden a very expensive full suspension Santa Cruz on the same trails, and
while it was definitely fun, I don’t like the bounce and give of a suspension
fork.

In terms of design, like someone already said, a suspension-corrected front end
requires a shorter headtube—and I’m guessing a different headtube angle—and
these things change the ride and comfort of a bike, as well as the handling.

[RBW] Re: Bikepacking Kit

2018-06-18 Thread Bob K.
Patrick,

The Steripen looks cool. You could throw a Sawyer Squeeze in with that to take
care of any physical debris in the water. It takes up very little space and
weighs next to nothing. Only downside is it doesn’t work against viruses—but
maybe your pen does that—so it’s not a standalone solution for a viral
apocalypse. :)

[RBW] WTB/WTT: MUSA shorts, M (or S if new version) / or trade for Patagonia Stand Up Shorts

2018-06-23 Thread Bob K.
Hi Folks,

I'd love to buy a pair or two of MUSA shorts. From what I can tell, I would be
a medium in the old style and possibly a small in the new style. The more
well-worn the better because I don't want to spend a ton of money on shorts.

I could also offer up some worn-in size 33 Patagonia Stand Up shorts as a trade
if anyone is interested. These fit slightly snug in my experience. I'm usually
a 32 waist and these are tight on me.

Please reply off-list.

Re: [RBW] Re: The "One Bike" for a featherweight?

2018-07-14 Thread Bob K.
I’m 185+ pounds, and I’ve taken my canti Sam on some short mixed-road tours
pretty well loaded up and have had no problems whatsoever. It ends up a bit
“noodly,” perhaps, but not beyond what I can get used to. It is a ton of fun to
ride unloaded, too, and it fits 47/48 mm tires nicely. You didn’t mention a
PBH, so I’m not sure if your size would be 650b, though. My 56 isn’t.

What about the Crust Romanceur? It fits 650bx48 with fenders and even bigger
without—could do 27.5x2.1 Thunderburts. You could also go with the intended
26x2.3 Rat Trap Pass and have comfort for days.

[RBW] Feeler WTT: Albastache cockpit for drop bar cockpit

2017-12-13 Thread Bob K.
I'm currently running an Albastache setup on my Sam, and I'd like to move to
drops. I have zero experience with drop bars, but a buddy of mine with the same
gen and size Sam I have is running drops with a 60 mm stem and they felt
incredible. I'm not particularly picky in terms of components, and I don't want
to spend any money or time unwrapping my bars and parting this out. Please let
me know what you have to trade. Thanks!

Bob K. in Baltimore

My setup:

Albastache bar
80 mm Technomic
Shimano Tiagra aero levers
9-speed Shimano bar ends
Faded/natural blue Newbaum's

What I'd like:

Drop bar (Wider is preferable--48 Noodles? Something else? Nothing with a ton
of reach to hoods/drops. Maybe even open to dirt drops.)
60-80 mm stem
Aero levers
Index or friction shifters

[RBW] Re: Feeler WTT: Albastache cockpit for drop bar cockpit

2017-12-13 Thread Bob K.
Hi Doug,

I liked my friend's drop bar setup vs. my Albastache for a few reasons, but
mostly because I like the flats on drops more than I like the swept-back feel
of Albastache, Moustache and Albatross, all of which I've had on my Sam, and I
ride the hoods pretty often on my Albastache setup anyway, which I can still do
with drops.

Ultimately, if a trade doesn't materialize, I'm still happy enough with my
setup. Changing it up via trade gives me a way to experiment without spending
money, which I've been itching to do even though I haven't ridden my Sam much
in the past several months because I'm spending a lot more time on trails with
my 2017 Troll.

[RBW] Not ugly quill to threadless: Can it be done?

2018-01-20 Thread Bob K.
I am exploring moving on from my Sam, but I want to give a drop bar setup the
ol’ college try before I do. I like the Salsa Cowbell 2 bar, but it’s only
available in 31.8 clamp diameter, and I don’t want to pay the $80 premium for
the VO quill stem with removable face plate to match it.

And so, I’m considering the dreaded quill-to-threadless conversion route. I
find them to be highly ugly. I’m wondering, though, if anyone has a method I
could use to mitigate the ug-factor. AKA is there a way to cover up the skinny
part of the converter stem below the threadless stem’s base?

If this makes any sense whatsoever, I would welcome any/all ideas. After all, I
can’t have my Sam looking weird.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell prices going up.

2018-01-31 Thread Bob K.
While it’s possible to get another MUSA bike for cheaper than a MUSA Rivendell,
it won’t ever magically morph into a Rivendell. So there’s that.

I don’t, however, think it’s ludicrous to have a conversation about the price
change. Clearly, Grant knew it would be a big deal because he mentioned it a
few times prior to it actually happening. I’m assuming he’s worried about how
the pricing will affect business, and I’m guessing he also kept prices where
they were for so long (years!) because of said worry.

I also don’t think anyone has been out of line in voicing opinions on either
side. Bikes are awesome. They’re also expensive. (And they should probably be
even more expensive!) That’s the dance that Rivendell has danced so graciously
all these years, and I appreciate the thoughtfulness and transparency that goes
into their decision-making.

I’m not really sure what sort of a contribution this was, but I tried.

[RBW] Re: Who wants a Hunqadiscer?

2018-02-04 Thread Bob K.
IME, mechanical disc brakes work really well. Hydros work really, really well.
I agree with you, Mark, that we humans tend to embrace new technology rather
quickly, often without considering consequences. However, mechanical disc
brakes on a bike are—at this point—tried and true. I’m a philistine and a
ham-fisted novice bike mechanic, and I’ve been able to figure out how to adjust
both hydraulic and mechanical disc brakes by watching a couple of YouTube
videos. The cr720s on my Sam are much more annoying to set up, actually. In
other words, I don’t think mechanical disc brakes on a bike are one of those
technologies of which we should be wary.

I have no skin in the game here. I likely wouldn’t buy a disc Hunq because I
already like the disc Surly Troll I own. I also don’t think Riv will make a
disc-braked bike, but it’s fun to dream.

[RBW] WTT: B17 (honey) for C17 Carved (black/slate)

2018-02-05 Thread Bob K.

I am looking to trade a comfy, used honey B17 for a comfy, used black or slate

The saddle shows some wear/sag, but we’ll call is slightly beausaged. Bolt has
been turned very little, if at all. I thought about lacing it, but I’ll leave
that decision up to you.

I don’t care too much about the condition of your C17 (again, carved) as long

The B17 is not for sale. Trades only, please, and please reach out directly

[RBW] Albastache (or Moustache) Brake Lever Positions

2018-02-10 Thread Bob K.
You could do bar end (“reverse aero”?) levers with the Albastache, but then
you’d be unable to use your bar end shifters. I don’t think you’d want to mount
levers anywhere else on those bars, if only because it would look strange.

What about just going Albatross and buying brake levers? You can get cheap,
decent Tektro levers for V or canti brakes for like $20. Could fix your
geo/reach/height issue without even a new stem. I know that’s not what you
asked, but I thought I’d throw it out there. If you’re really looking to stick
with road-style levers, Albastache are nice.

[RBW] Re: Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru

2018-02-23 Thread Bob K.
I have tried several scenarios for kid hauling:

1. Thule Ridealong: This is a rear seat that attaches to the seat tube.
Easy to remove, but the ugly attachment/base stays on the seat tube when
the seat is removed unless you want to take the time to remove it, too. The
design gives the seat a bit of suspension. I found this to be awesome in
normal road/town riding, but the suspension was a bit much when on a rail
trail or fire road. If town riding is generally what you'll be doing, and
you want a rear seat, you could certainly do worse than the Ridealong.

2. Cougar Chariot (2): I got the two-seater so I could put some other stuff
in there along with my daughter. She loved this trailer, and quite frankly,
I don't know why I sold it. I do know that I couldn't use it on the C&O
towpath (double track) because of its wheelbase, so I sold it for a
single-wheeled trailer.

3. Frances Farfarer: After strongly considering the Weehoo, I went with the
Farfarer because it's just over 1/3 of the weight. I also liked that it was
made by a framebuilder in CA. He lives in Santa Cruz, and has documented
the trailer's use with his daughter. It's incredibly lightweight (9-ish
pounds?) and is a really well-designed trailer. Unfortunately, even my
rather tall daughter tends to sink down into the trailer. She doesn't seem
to like it nearly as much as the erstwhile Chariot. We also didn't end up
doing the C&O tour last year, so I'm considering unloading the Farfarer for
a Weehoo or giving it another try since she's a year older (and bigger).
I'm on the fence about keeping this trailer in general because it is super
versatile, but with its resale value just south of $500, it's pretty tough
to justify keeping it around if I'm not using it regularly.

Overall, the Weehoo seems pretty ideal, and if I knew what I know now,
that's where I would've gone for #3. I do think the fully-covered trailers
are a great option if the roads where you live are wide enough that you're
not concerned about drivers giving you enough space. I also would highly
recommend going with the double. It's not that much wider, and it gives you
a ton of extra space for stuffed animals, snacks, groceries, etc.

[RBW] Re: Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru

2018-02-23 Thread Bob K.
Oh, and I should add that I would probably go with a front seat to start
things off with an infant and move to the trailer around two. Again, it all
depends on the type of riding you want to do. She loved the trailer right
when we started using it (around 1?) and would still love it if I hadn't
sold it. Bad move!

I made a tool roll out of those cheap-o Home Depot canvas tool belts. I sewed

[RBW] Has Anyone Rinko'd Their Riv? - Follow Up on Yesterday's Rivendell Email

2019-05-25 Thread Bob K.
I take the Vermonter train from Brattleboro to Baltimore every summer after my
annual VT bikepacking jaunt. I always use the roll-on service. First year I
even squeezed my Troll’s 26x3” tires (barely) with minimal deflation in the
hook. Sidenote: Packed the frame bag with about 24 beers that are available in
VT and nowhere else. When I got off the train, the ride home was a bit harder
than it would’ve been without the beers, but I was pretty satisfied a couple
hours later.

I digress, but in sum: I highly recommend Amtrak’s roll-on service.

Until the new Silvers are available, here are some from IRD via Soma. Riv is

If those don’t fit the bill, I’ve had success with older Shimano thumbshifters

but I’ve shifted friction across 8 without issue.

I have no experience with these tires on the Atlantis, nor do I run them with

The 48s jst fit, and I'm not convinced they've made a world of difference

[RBW] Frances Farfarer Trailer - $450 Shipped OBO

2019-10-20 Thread Bob K.
Hi Folks,

I decided to wait a while to re-post this great trailer. Need to get some
cash out of this and move it on to a loving home so I can keep buying
guitar pedals!

As stated below in the original posting, I paid $652 shipped from Frances.
It's barely used. Save yourself $200 and snag this for $450 shipped (OBO).
See below for more info--don't hesitate to make an offer.

Note: I'll be on a backpacking trip from Monday-Friday, so I won't get back
to you immediately, but I will respond ASAP. Shipping could happen early
the following week.

Thanks!

Bob K. in Baltimore

- - - - -

Original Posting:

Riv Content: The trailer is hitched to my beautiful '09 canti Hillborne in
the photos
<https://drive.google.com/open?id=1zE2J7B7eBie3PVSiWWC5LZVshxjSmmhS>.

Up for sale is my lightly used Frances Farfarer trailer. I've owned it for
about two years, and it has spent most of that time de-coupled/disassembled
because I haven't had as much time to use it as planned. This is an
incredibly capable and nimble trailer, and it weighs in at just under 10
pounds. When loaded properly with the heaviest items toward the bottom, it
hardly feels like you're pulling anything at all. I have used it for
errands in the general vicinity of my house (groceries, firewood, etc.),
hauling my daughter from time to time, and on one ~150 mile tour of the C&O
Towpath here in MD. Works well with both my Sam (700x48) and Troll (26x3).

I'm selling it for a couple of reasons: 1) I bought it primarily as a
kid-hauler, and while it works well for that purpose, my daughter and I
both prefer the forward-facing Weehoo so we can talk a bit more easily.
Joshua Muir (maker of the trailer) used it for his daughter for years in
Santa Cruz, and he loved it for that purpose. And 2) As mentioned above, I
don't use it often enough.

Comes with a safety flag (not pictured), metal fender, Schwalbe Big Apple
tire, one hitch, and bushing for 27.2 seatpost. If you need a different
bushing size, Joshua at Frances has what you need. It has a few
scratches/scuffs, but no dings, and the cargo "bag" (which is super heavy
duty Cordura) has a couple of small stains. One of the fender stays is
slightly bent. Just wanted to point that out because I know how finicky
BOBs and RBWs can be about their fenders. *See pictures here*
<https://drive.google.com/open?id=1zE2J7B7eBie3PVSiWWC5LZVshxjSmmhS>.

If you're interested, you probably know all about this thing, but you can
also find more info on the trailer at Frances's website
<http://www.francescycles.com/farfarer-trailers> and on Youtube
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSeeqHvphqk>.

Price includes shipping anywhere in the continental US, but local pickup
(or delivery within Baltimore/DC area) is strongly preferred! I paid $652
shipped from Frances and have only ridden it ~250 miles. And just FYI, I'll
be at a conference DC for a week as of tomorrow, so I won't be able to ship
it until next weekend or early the following week.

Please respond privately with any questions/interest. Thanks!

A friend here in Baltimore recently bought a used Atlantis without a head
badge. He called Rivendell to ask if he could buy one. Grant (I think, or
another employee) said that he simply needed to see a picture of the bike
with his name on it, like on written on a piece of tape or something is
what I assumed, and that was all the proof that was necessary. He got a new
head badge. I'm not sure what the cost was. Good luck!

Amps in that price range are all pretty similar. If she's playing an acoustic

[RBW] WTB: Albastache Bar

2016-09-04 Thread Bob K.
Hi Folks,

I'm looking for a used Albastache bar to try on my Sam. I considered going from
my current Albatross setup to drops, but I'm the Albastache could be a perfect
middle ground. I don't mind if it's scratched up. In fact, I'd prefer it so I
don't have to cringe when I scratch it upon install.

I have some stuff for trade, too, including a well-used moustache bar and a
bunch of other components. Let me know what you're looking for and I might have
it.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Cambrium C19

2016-09-05 Thread Bob K.
This is a thread drift, but only slightly:

The comments here and on iBob inspired me to give the *C15* a go. I have
one on demo from my LBS right now. It's almost an exact match in terms of
shape with a hideous-but-oh-so-comfy plastic saddle I pulled off a cracked
frame scrap heap Specialized Allez, so I figured it would feel pretty
great. I was wrong, at least so far.

I love the look, but to my sits bones, it may as well be made of granite.
Might have to finally lace-up and pool noodle my B17s and/or come to grips
with the fact that I love an ugly saddle and shift the aforementioned
plastic job onto my Sam.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thoughts on Cambium?

2016-09-14 Thread Bob K.
This summer, after riding B17s exclusively for over a decade, I decided to try
out a narrower saddle. There was an old Specialized Comp 143 lying around my
school's bike shop, so I slapped it on my late 80s Rockhopper before a
three-day camping trip on the VA Mountain Bike Trail in the Jefferson National
Forest. The first ten or so miles were pretty painful, but the next 120 were
pure bliss.

Upon returning home, my vanity took over and even though it was so comfortable,
I couldn't bring myself to swap it onto my Sam. It just didn't "feel" right
even though it did! I kept riding with the saggy and splayed-out B17 that I
desperately need to address, trying to fight back the memories of the ugly
saddle's comforts, when it occurred to me that trying out a C15 might be a good
call, so I got one on loan from my LBS this past week. Cost me $25, but after
hearing mixed reviews I wasn't sure I'd like it, so I decided to go the demo
route.

On first look, the shape was perfect, almost exactly like the plastic
Specialized saddle, but the first ride was awful. I had a bunch of pain from
the firmer feel, and everything felt just plain wrong. I decided to give it the
full week, though. Very much to my surprise, after some slight adjustments and
a couple of "longer" rides, it felt incredible! I could hardly believe the
transformation. I know others have had some issues with durability, but I might
take the plunge anyway as I'm worn out on messing around with leather. I'm
thinking the C15 carved will be the sweet spot since it offers a bit more flex.
I'll report back once I pinch enough pennies to snag one.

[RBW] Re: Which bikes should Rivendell keep selling?

2016-09-15 Thread Bob K.
The Atlantis is their flagship bike. It says as much on the website. It's also
beautiful and as others have said, I wouldn't expect it's too big of a stock
issue to make made-to-order bikes.

Here's my list:

1. Atlantis
2. Homer
3. Roadeo
4. Sam
5. Joe
6. Clem/entine

But who knows? It could be argued that all the bikes have their niches and that
it'd be sensible to get rid of the all-arounder types like the Sam and Joe.
Regardless, they'll keep churning out well-made, beautiful, functional bikes.
Looking forward to seeing the plan.

Re: [RBW] surly ogre vs riv hunq?

2016-10-03 Thread Bob K.
Personally, I think small-frame 29ers look a bit silly and strangely
proportioned, so if you're a S/M as opposed to a L/XL, I'd go with the
Troll over the Ogre. I'm sure that any of the aforementioned bikes would
perform well for what you're seeking, but keep in mind there are tire
clearance differences. Someone on this list told me that he fit Surly
Extraterrestrial 2.5s on his Hunq. The Troll fits 26"x3". Ogre is somewhere
in the 29 x 2.8" ballpark.

[RBW] WTB: 80mm Technomic

2016-10-11 Thread Bob K.
I'm swapping from Albatross to Albastache bars on my Sam in an effort to
convert it from townie-ish to my dedicated road bike. After doing some reading
on list archives, it sounds like dropping from a 100mm to 80mm stem is the way
to go, so I'm looking to buy an 80 mm Technomic stem. It doesn't need to be in
perfect shape--just usable.

(Related Sidenote: I tried swapping a dirt drop stem but it bottoms out before
getting as low as I'd like it, so a Technomic it is.)

Let me know what you have before I resort to Amazon or Treefort. Please PM if
possible.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Taking Risks

2016-10-21 Thread Bob K.
I'm glad your bike was still there, Leah! My move would've been to simply
wheel the bike inside and shove it in a corner somewhere. Even if it's not
in the office, it's indoors and away from passing eyes. Bike culture or
not, that's a damn nice bike and it would be a shame if someone other than
you rode off on it. If someone got upset because I brought my bike inside
while volunteering at the school, I would've apologized and ridden away on
TBBITW, smiling and carefree.

mounting their racks on forks that don't have the necessary eyelets. I
bought some to mount the Tubus Tara on my '09 canti Sam because the
mid-fork eyelets don't allow for a level mounting of the Tara. Perhaps you
could use them to mount the VO Rando rack? It wouldn't be as "clean," but
the eyelets were recommended to me by others here as far superior to
p-clamps, both in looks and function. Others might be able to speak from
experience on this combo.

[RBW] Re: FS: Nitto (bar, stems, rack), Shimano (derailleurs, brakes, groupset), Suntour downtubes, Ergon Grips, Surly Open Bar, et cetera!

2016-10-24 Thread Bob K.
Here's another update. Technomic stem, dirt drop stem, U-Brake, Moustache
Bar, Smart Sams, and Mt. Campee rack are all sold and will ship out this
afternoon! 105 mini-group is going back in the parts bin for a rainy day
that may never come.

Don't hesitate to reach out with offers or questions about the remaining
items, and thanks again for all of the interest in this stuff! I'll be
listing some panniers and bags in a few minutes, too.

*Mountain Bike "User Interface"*

*Surly Open Bar*--$45 shipped: Forgot to snap a picture of this. I wasn't
very careful when installing brakes and thumbies, so it's scuffed, and
since it's CroMo, there's a bit of surface rust. Nothing major, but it show
quality. Wrap it up with cotton bar tape and forget it. I can take a
picture if you need one. Combo this with the Ergon grips for $60 shipped.
Super comfy.

*Ergon GP1 Grips*--$20 shipped: Used for one tour and tooling around town.

*Brakes, **Derailleurs, & Shifter*

*Tektro cr720 Canti Brakes (black) front/rear with KoolStop pads*--$30
shipped. Front has been used. Rear is brand new.

*Shimano Deore Rear Derailleur RD-M591*--$30 shipped: Great used shape.
Silver/Black.

*Shimano Deore Front Derailleur FD-M591*--$20 shipped: Great used shape.
Silver/Black.

*Suntour Downtube Friction Shifters*--$25 shipped: Used take-off from my
wife's Trek 613. Clamp-on.

[RBW] Ultegra Bar End Question/Conundrum

2016-10-24 Thread Bob K.
Hey Folks:

I'm a pretty inexperienced wrench compared to most folks here, so I thought
I would float this question to the group. If the solution is a simple one,
please take it easy on me!

I bought some new Ultegra bar ends off a list-member several months back
with the intention of replacing the older ones I've had on my Sam since
'09. I swapped my Albatross setup (and older shifters) over to my wife's
Trek 613 a couple of weeks ago, and just this weekend got around to
re-assembling my Sam with a new Albastache cockpit. I pulled the Ultegra
shifters out of my bin, installed them on the bars, and ran cables. Much to
my chagrin, when testing things out, I realized that the left-hand (front)
shifter only has enough pull to swap between the granny and middle ring on
my Sugino xd2 crankset. It comes to a hard stop and won't pull any more
cable. My questions for you are:

Is there a version of this shifter that only works for two rings up front?

Or did I screw up something on install?

Thanks for any help!

Re: [RBW] Ultegra Bar End Question/Conundrum

2016-10-24 Thread Bob K.
Thanks, Tim.

1. I haven't adjusted the limit screws at all and the previous shifters
pulled plenty of cable for my xd2 triple, so I don't think this is the
problem.
2. I noticed "hard stop" of the shifter around the middle position prior to
tensioning the FD cable, so I don't think this is it, either.
3. The FD is a Campy clamp-on that came on my Sam when it was built by Riv
in '09. I don't know the model.

The "hard stop" that I'm noticing in the middle position of the shifter
makes me think I somehow reassembled it poorly when I went to re-attach it
to the pod, but I took it apart once and tried to fix it and couldn't
figure it out. Dang.
