[RBW] FS: 59cm A. Homer Hilsen w/Clydesdale Wheelset
I'm selling my 59cm A.Homer Hilsen. It's in excellent condition. 3 years old, 3000 miles. Never dropped or rained on. Stored indoors at room temperature. (No garage storage.) $2500, with professional packing and shipping to the CON US included. Will consider offer on local pickup (Paso Robles ,CA.) No saddle, seatpost or pedals. I weighed 240 for most of the miles on this bike, and I had a good shop (Bike Attack in Santa Monica) build me a set of bombproof wheels. The people at Bike Attack are oriented towards mountain biking, so the wheelset has a set of high end Hadley hubs with disc brake mounts...which are of course out of place on a road bike. Straight 2mm spokes, and Mavic A719 rims. No broken spokes, and just 2 super light truing touch-ups in 3000 miles. This is the best wheelset I've ever had for my personal needs. The set up is nothing fancy, but nothing cheap, either... 42cm Nitto Noodle Bars 11cm Nitto Technomic Deluxe Stem 172.5 Crank Arms (I'm 5'10" and my pbh is 86.5, and they are perfect for me on this frame size.) Sugino Compact triple crankset Silver Sidepull Brakes Hadley Hubs Mavic 719 Rims Tektro Brake Levers Shimano Bar End Shifters, set up as indexed downtube shifters 9 speed cogset Near New Jack Brown Blue Rear Tire Well Used Jack Brown Blue Front Tire (100 miles left on it.) Ultegra Derailer...lightly scuffed from use on another bike Chain slightly less than 50% stretch...plenty of miles left Aside from the normal dropout wear, there are 4 paint chips. They are clearly shown in the photos available here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25844261@N05/ Thanks -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Rambouillet or San Marcos
I'm going to break with the other posters, and go with the San Marcos. I'm 5'10'' with an 86.5 PBH, as measured by Grant. The 54 San Marcos fits me perfectly, with an 11cm stem. I've owned both the Rambouillet and the San Marcos, and I find the San Marcos to be a better handling bike, when ridden with no "extras" like fenders and baskets and bags. Dead solid neutral. The Rambouillet, for me, was a touch twitchy. Plus, the San Marcos is available pretty much "on demand." -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: things I noticed after a 2 month biking hiatus
I had a similar experience last spring. I was off my Homer for 3 months (due to the bad winter in the PNW). I had just finished dialing it in when the snows came, so I was curious how it would feel after along lay off. Much to my delight, everything felt good, other than my legs. I attribute most of that to the bike and the SAA saddle. [RBW] Bike Bell Concert In L.A.
http://tinyurl.com/yl7q58c "Wagner's "Ring" cycle may be vying with Dudamania as the headline maker of the musical season on Grand Avenue, but please take note that downtown's main drag of the arts will also be playing host to a horde of cyclists, ringing. The musical piece in question is "Eine Brise: Transient Action for 111 Cyclists," by the late Argentinian composer Mauricio Kagel, which will have its L.A. premiere Feb. 22 outdoors on Grand Avenue's pavement. Kagel's quickie composition, no more than two minutes long, calls for 111 bicycle riders to ring their bells, whistle and emit vocalized effects in unison, on command. The performance is part of the just-announced 2009-10 season from the experimental and contemporary music series Monday Evening Concerts. Along with the biker ensemble, its "Celebrating Kagel" concert will offer two pieces played indoors in the series' regular quarters, Zipper Concert Hall at the Colburn School." --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Will riding a Rivendell make me self-conscious or overly worrisome?
I too like to keep a low profile... In the 6 years since I got my first Rivendell, I've ridden over 20,000 miles, and have had a number of people comment. I had one homeless guy seriously ask about it. He seemed to know what it was, and wanted to know if it lived up to its reputation. Once while riding past a parking lot in a beach area I heard a woman shout "Whoo-whoo! Rivendell!" I turned to look, and it was the best looking young woman I'd seen in years. I was chugging up a climb in the Blue Mountains outside Walla Walla Washington about a year ago, and a woman on a full race carbon thing decended past me going probably 40 MPH. In the flash of a second it took her to pass me, see saw that I was riding a Rivendell and came to a screeching halt, turned around, and rode back up to me to have a look. The most consistant positive reaction I've had is from 20 something guys with tatoos and earrings, on mountain bikes or BMXs. They always have a positive comment. One said, "That bike really handles well." Another said, "As soon as I saw the group, I knew it was a new bike." Oddly enough, the only overtly negative was from a bike store owner who was in his 60's, and seemed to be an otherwise thoughtful person. He took one look at my Rambouillet and said, "Those are just old frames they repaint and rebadge." This thread should be the last carbon fiber-related topic in this group, ever. This is a Rivendell owner's group. Rivendell doesn't make or sell anything made of carbon. Every carbon thread to date has ended in tears or virtual fisticuffs. Addtionally, Grant has made his postion very clear on this subject...with a great deal of sincerity and evidence to back it up. [RBW] Re: noodle bars
Phase two of the "Noodle Discovery Train" is finding the right width. I ended up getting three pairs, 42-44-46, and swapped them back and forth until I came to the conclusion that I indeed liked the 42's best. The wider bars worked well, but my pinkys got numb on long tides. No amount of moving the bars up or down or rotating them forward of backward resovled the problem. But a set of 42's did. [RBW] Re: Is the Ram the closest thing to perfect bike? I think so.
I rode a Rambouillet for 3 years, and recently shifted over to an AHH, because we moved from So Cal to the PNW, and I wanted to rided wider tires with fenders. I had to sell my Rambouillet (to a very nice fellow -- http://myrambouilletbuild.blogspot.com/ ) to facilitate the AHH. So, I'm in the unique (for me) position of being qualified to speak! I love both bikes, and for many of the same reasons. It's a mistake to assume that the AHH can't be ridden in the same manner as the Rambouillet. (Not to say that you are saying this, just making a general observation.) I ride it as a pure road bike. No racks or bags (other than a small, under the saddle bag) and the tires are not as soft as I could ride them. (JB Blues at 80 LBS) I can climb as well as the Rambouillet, and descend a bit better. The weight is about 1-2 pounds heavier than the Rambouillet, and I'm using the same wheels and saddle, stem and bars. I can't feel it. When I'm riding in the zone (forgetting I'm on the bike, just peddling and thinking) I'm rarely reminded I'm cycling by the AHH itself. (Did that make any sense?) I will say this about the Rambouillet... I suspect that it has just a touch more depth to it than the AHH, and a more experienced cyclist might find deeper understanding in the Ram. Had I ridden it for more a couple more years, it probably would have continued to educate me. The AHH seems more like "it is what it is," right off the bat, and it's really great. Stable, but no where near boring (if it's used as a road bike.) I also learned so many lessons riding the Rambouillet for three years, that when I got on the AHH, I was much better educated as to what to expect from Grant's design philosophy. (My previous road bikes were a Lemond and a Cannondale sport frame. A couple or years on each.) For me, the added dimension of the AHH relates to its added versatility. The added depth of the Rambioullet is in it's somewhat quicker handling, and the ability to stay ahead of my learning curve. The difference between the two (again, to me) is pretty slim. I would love to see the Rambouillet live on...but the AHH is no slouch as a pure road bike. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Weight limit for A.H.H
I'm around 220, and I think that's the limit. I put on some weight a while back (240), and could feel my AHH starting to flex side to side just a bit too much, especially the front end. When I lost the weight, it felt fine again. The same for my old Rambouillet. 220 was about it. Another option I've used with success is to remove the old tape, and use strips of that used tape in lieu of gel. The first time I ever went into the Rivendell shop, Grant let me ride 3 Rambouilets...and I commented how dramatic the increase on stability was as the size of the bike went up. His analogy was comparing the difference between writing with a pen when the "leak cap" was on the top of the pen, and when it was removed. The pen with the cap removed is much more unstable. (The larger bike with the top tube higher above the wheels was more stable.) [RBW] Re: Interesting Incident on Today's Ride
Two somewhat similar incidents... I was near the end of solo, unsupported a double metric century on my Rambouillet-- the longest ride I'd ever made -- and I was feeling pretty damn proud of myself. As I neared home, I came upon a college- aged guy on an old touring bike that was so loaded, it was a miracle he could stay on it. This was in Ventura County in California. The rider was on the way to Belize...from Seattle! He said he was planning to stay down there a year or two, but by that point on the ride, had decided to save enough money to fly home! I offered to put him up for the night, but he was keen to do the whole trip "on his own." Another time I was in Central California on a surf trip. An older gentleman on a mountian bike stopped near my car. Just one small saddle bag. He said he was retired, had been evicted from his place up north somewhere, and decided to ride his bike to Florida to attend his grandaughter's wedding. I tried to gave him all the cash I had (just over 20 bucks,) but he declined, saying he had been in the Marines and could take care of himself. I left the area, but turned around a few minutes later, flagged him down, and more forcefully offered the money. He admitted he was almost out of money, and accepted my modest offering.
