Found some in the size and color I was looking for!

That being said, sounds like other folks are looking for these bars too.
Might be worth posting here if anyone has some they're willing to part with
still!

Thanks for those recipes!!

I agree that it can definitely be liberating to cook simply sometimes - and
sometimes those recipes are the best. Sounds like these are some
time-honored favorites.

Would love the electrolyte powder recipe too if you get a moment! Agreed
that a lot of the pre-made ones are pretty trash. I currently use one with
stevia in it (which was the least trash I could find) but it would be nice
to have one that's not so sweet

Re: [RBW] What's the new model going to be in 2025?

2025-01-14 Thread Paul M
As much as I would like to see a new Hillibike frame design I think this
head badge is for a kid's bike. At first glance and Bill's suggestion of a
"Y" it's easy to stick with that idea. But by looking at it a second time,
I first saw the upside-down "spade" and then the "Y" resembled a slingshot.

I remembered Grant fascination with making thins from wood and how he would
write about it in the Rivendell Readers. Well, the #43 Reader shows you how
to make a slingshot. (cyclofiend archives).

The "spade" actually could be an Indian arrowhead.

The missing vowels could represent a grade school missing vowel spelling
worksheet for K-5.

Who didn't make their own slingshot and search for arrowheads as a kid!

Hi Patricia, I more or less followedthe bikepacking.com route called SF
peninsula traverse. Although the pacing was a lot faster than I could do,
and so I did some modifications on the route based on how I felt. The only
other thing I would mention is that riding a bike on skyline really sucks
because there’s minimal shoulder and it’s used as a racecourse by
motorcycles which is quite terrifying. There’s a trail that parallels the
road and I think the route uses it. Here’s a link to the route:

[RBW] Re: Possible to Shorten Brake Cable/Housing

2025-01-14 Thread Oliver Moss
Hey Jay,

You got it right on. It's a pretty simple to shorten that housing, and your
play by play is pretty much just right. The only thing I would add is using
an awl, or the end of a pick, to make the newly cut housing end round if it
has been squashed when it was cut. I also clean up that end with a file so
it is smooth.

Damn good looking bike, by the way.

Re: [RBW] Charlie Gallup tire & fender dilemma

2025-01-14 Thread Doug Van Cleve
Hey Joyce.

I can’t think of any reason you wouldn’t install the widest fenders that
fit your fork blades/brakes and rear stays. You can always run a slightly
narrower tire, it gives you the most versatility, and the weight is not
going to be consequentially different. It should be as simple as measuring
the narrowest width where the fender has to fit, then checking to see what
the outside width of the candidates is and picking a good fit. Or you could
probably just call RBW headquarters, I’m sure they can tell you the widest
fender that will fit :^)

Re: [RBW] Charlie Gallup tire & fender dilemma

2025-01-14 Thread JAS
Teague, thank you for your comments! Since I plan to run smooth tires, I'm
happy to hear the VO 52mm Zepplins and RH Snoqqualmie Pass tires play well
together. My wheels are being made with Velocity Quill rims with an
internal measure of 21mm, but I don't have them yet. I wonder how that
dimension will effect the final width of the Snoqs.

Doug, I like your idea of going with the widest fender possible. Of
course, calling RBW headquarters is a good idea. I asked them about the
fenders they sell; the SKS B55 was recommended, but I'll call back to ask
about metal fender fit. Thanks for your advice!

[RBW] Re: Charlie Gallup tire & fender dilemma

2025-01-14 Thread Teague Scott
I don't have a Gallop, so I can only help so much! I do run Snoqualmies
with 52mm VO Zeppelin fenders and they're a match made in heaven.

Could one run the Zeppelin fenders under caliper brakes? Can't say myself.
Do you have 52+mm between your squeezed brakes?

Could one riding Snoqs with fenders go a little tighter than the Zeppelins?
Maybe. 50mm fenders could work. I think fender snugness comfort on a
spectrum and shifts depending on the kind of riding you're doing. A little
tighter is OK with me if I'm strictly road riding. I want more clearance if
there are gonna be some twigs 'n other natural debris on a traily ride
(although generally best to go fenderless/use those fender stay safety
quick release things). Slick tires help increase comfort level over
knobbies. VO recommends using the Zeps with 42mm tires. I think I've read
somewhere that ~4mm either side is about as snug as one would want to go. I
run my Snoqs on ~18mm internal width rims and they come out to ~42mm fat.

Metal vs. plastic. Metal requires a half day of fiddling to get dialed
chef's kiss. Helps if you've got a buddy on hand who's set some metal
fenders up before. Metal fenders also require a greater level of spatial
awareness if you'd like to keep 'em straight as an arrow and ding free.
Plastique is tres forgiving, easier to setup, and, I believe, lighter.

[RBW] Re: Possible to Shorten Brake Cable/Housing

2025-01-14 Thread Mathias Steiner
I have a method -- I don't want to call it a 'simple trick' lest you-all
think it's click bait -- that makes cutting the housing a little more
predictable.

Pull back the brake cable so it's away from where you will cut.
Shove a piece of brake cable into the housing so it goes a little past the
cut.
Cut.
Push the cut-off piece out and check the housing. Repeat if you have left a
bad surface, or file/Dremel it flat.

Either way, by keeping a piece of cable in the housing, you won't have a
blockage.

No matter how I do it, I'm averaging 50% success at best. I try to err a
hair on the long side for the first cut.

[RBW] Charlie Gallup tire & fender dilemma

2025-01-14 Thread JAS
I'm hoping someone out here in Riv-land will help me with my current parts
dilemma. I'm trying to decide on tire and fender sizes for my 53 Charlie
Gallup. As designed, it will be a road-only bike; Riv says it can take up
to a 45mm tire with fenders. I also own a Platypus and a Clem.

If you've got a fendered Charlie, *what did you choose for tires and
fenders*? Fenders are a must-have in the PNW. It would be helpful to know
the specifics about sizes and brands. In addition:

   1. How much clearance is needed between the tire and the fender? (For
example, is 2mm from the edge of the tire to the internal edge of fender
   enough?)
   2. Is there a silver metal fender that will fit a 44cm tire and be the
appropriate size for the Gallup's frame? I'm not sure where to measure.
   3. If you care to comment on Rene Herse tires, I'm curious about the
44cm Snoqualmie Pass vs 38cm Barlow Pass as choices for Charlie Gallup.
Standard casing weights vary by only 5 grams; the 38cm tire would allow
   slightly lighter (narrower) fenders.

Thank you in advance for your comments and sage advice!

Joyce

Re: [RBW] New member introduction

2025-01-14 Thread Patricia Crespo
Hi Ray,

Beautiful bikes! I'm jealous!

What route did you do in the SC mountains? My boyfriend and I are
considering doing something like that this year but don't know where to
start. He's a mountain biker, I'm more of a road and gravel rider. We're
both familiar with the mountains, having hiked or ridden (or lived by) big
sections of them. He lives in Santa Cruz and I live in San Jose.

Happy riding!

[RBW] Re: Rivendell's of the UK

2025-01-14 Thread der_amerikanische_freund
Hiya,

I used to live in the UK, sadly not anymore, but I'm followying this thread
fondly.

Charlie, I wanted to ask you what tire width are those Panaracers?

I'm considering getting one of the next Atlantis or Appaloosa frames, and
have always liked Gravelkings but I don't think a 47mm would look good on
the bike, hence why I'm curious on the size you are using.

Thank you very much

[RBW] Re: New S!LVER hub questions: free hub removal, parts availability

2025-01-14 Thread Richard Lesnik
The freehub-side end cap is likely tighter than the non-drive end cap, and
when removing it, the small o-ring that creates a seal might be damaged. If
that happens, contact Rivendell -- we have replacement o-rings.

It's gone through at least one design iteration but if it's similar in
"architecture" to the one I had on an early Appaloosa complete, then it
 was
 really easy.

 1. look at the end caps. You should recognize a 5mm allen key recess
in the ends. Using 2 5mm allen keys, unscrew an end cap. They are not
tight. Just snugged. Whichever one unscrews, I think you'll find a
 bigger
allen recess in the exposed axle end, for if you want to remove the other
 end cap.
 2. with the drive side end cap removed, you can just pull the free hub
body off, exposing the pawls on the free hub body and the drive ring on
 the
hub shell. You can lube up the drive ring with heavier oil or light
 grease
 to quiet things down.

FYI, today (Saturday) at ~1:30 PM, the bike finally got picked up by
UPS from the bike shop. It was ready to be picked up Wednesday morning at
 9
AM when the shop opened (they packed it Tuesday and had the label before
COB that day), so that's about 3.5 days of waiting, which seems kind of
embarrassing for the bike shop, but whatever. What finally got things
moving was reaching out to BikeFlights via email. They responded promptly
and offered to change the order to request the pickup I had declined in
 the
first place, and I gladly accepted, and they managed to get a pickup on
Saturday. Hopefully the shipping and delivery will be uneventful.
The lesson here is that if you can't drop off the bike yourself (I
definitely couldn't), pay the $5 to have the bike picked up!

Re: [RBW] Slipping/sliding/jumping/ghosting gears on a new Platypus

2025-01-14 Thread John Robert Williams
Happy New Year Liz!
How frustrating for you!

There a a few issues/questions:
Are you riding a 1x or 2x chainring set up?

Has the rear derailleur alignment been checked? (The dropout?)

Are the two jockey wheels aligned?
If you stand behind the parked bike, in the lowest gear, close one eye and
imagine a line strait up and down where the chain comes up off the two
wheels. If it’s cocked in any way, that can lead to the ghost shifts. It
can also be the jockey wheels aren’t lubed or aren’t the proper ones for
your shift system.

Are you certain that the rear cable is free of any possible crimps, (like
under the bottom bracket?) Do you have a kick stand mounted? If so, look
carefully at the cables adjacent to the kickstand and that the cables do
NOT touch the kickstand or its bracket. It’s often overlooked.

Another test- grab the rear bare shift cable and see if that shifts and
overrides the shifters. (You may need to put your bike on a stationary
trainer).

Last check- make certain you don’t have a modern 11-12 speed chain on the
bike. It takes the older, wider chain on these wider spaced
freewheels/cassettes.

Good luck!
(I wish I had a Platypus, 60, Ana Purple)

Hey all,

I'm searching for a 60cm Platypus. I am keen on building up a frameset, but
I'm open to complete builds as well. Sergio Green would be my grail. Or the
2021 mermaid.

If anyone out there wants to downsize, please know I'm interested! I'm
located in NYC.

Thanks,
Justin
