Re: [RBW] OGK grips: lessons learned - a follow-up question

2024-11-24 Thread Doug Van Cleve
Howdy folks.

I read thru this whole thing, and to my surprise nobody mentioned what I
would do. I looked up the grips on RBW.com, and they seem to be some kind
of rubbery stuff? Anyway, every time I wanted to remove grips that
wouldn’t come off just from pulling toward the end of the bar with my
fingers on the front edge (which usually makes the inside diameter increase
slightly), I’ve just worked a bit of dish soap under the stem side than
wiggled and twisted a bit at a time until more of the grip releases.
Lather, rinse, repeat until it comes off then clean everything up with
water and dry. Am I missing something?

[RBW] Re: Bike Snob has done it again!

2024-11-24 Thread J-D Bamford
Re: Steelnovo…

Columbus’ tube shaping (more than just ovals) is innovative, even if that’s
somewhat an aesthetic as much as technical motivator. Hard to know how much
non-oval tube shaping improves characteristics versus oval/squished.
Colnago isn’t ashamed to admit that aesthetics are an important
differentiator for their brand.

3D printed stainless lugs/joiners are very innovative. Getting a glimpse of
that manufacturing process, and the grouping of 4 bikes’ worth of lugs on
one plate, is a real treat. 3D printing has become a major topic in
mechanical engineering curriculums… it’s the pointed tip of the innovation
spear.

Agreed they didn’t elaborate enough on why the steel fork concept was
deemed insufficient… but given their close collab with tubing and 3D
printing partners, it seems fair to say that it was earnestly attempted. I
tend to think weight might have been a driving factor… but the mechanical
engineer in me would relish hearing more about the discovered limitations.

The best enthusiast-oriented media houses today (whether discussing cycling
tech, mechanical wrist watches, or whatnot) have become excellent
outsourced media houses for the brands. Interesting evolution of the roles
of media.

Re: [RBW] Roaduno shakedown

2024-11-24 Thread Jason Fuller
I also noticed the big difference on steering when I went from my previous
low trail bike (Soma Grand Rando) to my first Riv (Hillborne) and 'carving'
is exactly how I perceived it too! Not as immediately responsive but I much
prefer it overall. Takes a small adjustment period.

Bike looks great!

Re: [RBW] Roaduno shakedown

2024-11-24 Thread Patrick Moore
42/19 = 2.21 X 26.6 (per JimG; the numbers from that site pretty closely
match my empirical measurements) = 58.8 gear inches.

I’m familiar enough with my own drivetrains to know how a 175 mm crank
compares to a 170 with the same ring/cog X wheel diameter; the empirical
upshot is a bit less than 1 tooth less for the longer crank; ie, the
48/17X25.6" 72” gear with 170 mm cranks on my Matthews errand road bike
would be the more-or-less equivalent of a 48/16.5X26.5” gear with 175 mm
cranks.

But he is still funny. And to be funny after 17 years of doing the same old

smart.

Long may he wave; or something like that.

[RBW] Re: miesha’s then and now

2024-11-24 Thread Michael Baquerizo
if theyre the same offering from the since discontinued Riv offering ( i
assume BL just bought up a ton knowing theyd be discontinued) then they are
just cylindrical. the shape you're referring to went away a while ago.

i have them on one bike and as much as i love them, for this snapshot in my
head of what a rivendell should look like, i've since dropped this (very
heavy) bike on both sides and the ends snapped clean off. its a bummer, and
due to them being discontinued i'll just have to update my mental snap
shot, to ESIs with tape.

Hi.Basically doing what I tried early on with soap&water&suds instead of alcohol. Syringes will deliver soap and water. Worth a 10min try if I’m ever down this path again. After that, if no good progress… destruction!!Doug, I’ll give it a shot next time! Thanks!Yours,Thomas Lynn SkeanOn Nov 24, 2024, at 11:22 PM, Doug Van Cleve wrote:Howdy folks.I read thru this whole thing, and to my surprise nobody mentioned what I would do.  I looked up the grips on RBW.com, and they seem to be some kind of rubbery stuff?  Anyway, every time I wanted to remove grips that wouldn’t come off just from pulling toward the end of the bar with my fingers on the front edge (which usually makes the inside diameter increase slightly), I’ve just worked a bit of dish soap under the stem side than wiggled and twisted a bit at a time until more of the grip releases.  Lather, rinse, repeat until it comes off then clean everything up with water and dry.  Am I missing something?Regards, DougChandler, AZOn Sat, Nov 23, 2024 at 7:50 PM 'thomasl...@comcast.net' via RBW Owners Bunch wrote:Following the OGK removal I went with leather wrapped around Newbaum's as grips for this Boscomoose..The asymmetry and irregularity are, uh, intentional. Yeah, that's it. Intentional. While it's clear I'm not ready to provide leather-grip-wrap services professionally, I'm comfortable with the aesthetics of the outcome. It feels good in the hands. I've since added a few coats of shellac to the twine discourage rapid unexpected disassembly. I've have not ridden with them yet; it may all fall apart under actual usage. If so, I'll chalk it up to experience. If not, I'll have fun using it, even more knowing that I put it together.Yours,Thomas Lynn Skeanwho is still deciding which bag should ride there: brown SaddleSack XS (shown), blue SaddleSack XS, or old school tan Baggins Keven's
