So, what method were you using that put a scratch on your bars?

Re: [RBW] OGK grips: lessons learned - a follow-up question

2024-11-21 Thread 'thomasl...@comcast.net' via RBW Owners Bunch
The scratcher was most likely the
protectively-covered-but-apparently-not-well-enough small screwdriver I
used to lift the edge of the grip, to enable the syringe needle to deliver
alcohol.

The scratches themselves are more like light smooth abrasions. They have no
readily discernable depth.

Re: [RBW] OGK grips: lessons learned - a follow-up question

2024-11-21 Thread Brian Turner
Ah, gotcha. Like the photo I posted shows, assuming the grip is of a soft
enough material (like an ESG or Oury grip, or maybe even natural cork) I
just stick the syringe needle straight into the grip until it stops at the
bar. Angling the syringe helps. Then, I just inject alcohol into the space
between the inside of the grip and the bar. Usually takes two injections
for each grip, and once I start wiggling the grip, it usually slides right
off.

I realize this method is rather unorthodox, but it has worked for me for
years to remove many grips without hassle. It also helps that we used to
have a diabetic cat that required injections, so that's why I happen to
have some old disposable syringes laying about. Maybe one of these days
I'll actually buy a rubber tipped nozzle for my air compressor!

Wow. Thats some really aggressive support for a compressor. Personally even
at $70 its just not worth it for the amount of grips I would put on or off.
Alcohol has always worked well for me with no headaches. Worse case
scenario is I have to cut grips off (which so far I have never had to do)
but $20 or less is still cheaper than $70. Not saying its not a great tool
but I can totally verify that it is not the absolute necessity that was
suggested.

Swept back bars sound fun on this already relaxed, comfy bike. Rat Trap

Re: [RBW] OGK grips: lessons learned - a follow-up question

2024-11-21 Thread 'thomasl...@comcast.net' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi, Brian.

Understood. That might've worked here. The knuckled OGK has a harder, more
plasticky layer, exposed near its boundaries, and underneath/within its
foamier softer surface in its middle. But a medical syringe might've been
sharp enough and tough enough to penetrate it and deliver an effective
alcohol dose. During the time I was hopeful of getting this done
non-destructively, I decided that using the syringe I had (certainly not
medical; pretty large bore) actually consistuted destruction in itself. If
you saw a medical professional coming at you with a syringe like mine it
would trigger a fight-or-flight response.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

Hey Nathan,

I have a complete set of "Vintage Bicycle Quarterly"/ "Bicycle Quarterly"
beginning with Vol. 1, Number 1 (Summer 2002) thru No.80 (Summer 2022). I
would only sell if I could move the entire set. Even though the early
issues were thin , the entire group would be pretty heavy, 37 lbs. + -.
I am sure we could work out a deal on shipping. (I would need a few days to
research that cost.)

If that interests you, PM me with your zip code and I will come up with
both a price for the magazines and the shipping. (Maybe this could go
"library" rate? Or, maybe UPS would be better?)

Do you know if these work with older sun tour style ratchet shifters? The
really popular silver ones with black paddles.

Re: [RBW] Dynamo Wire Aesthetics

2024-11-21 Thread Matthew Williams
Ha! There’s no magic, here’s the wire route:

1: Wire goes in at the fork dropout, comes out at the fork crown
2: Wire runs along the underside of the downtube
3: Wire goes into the hole under the bottom bracket, runs inside the NDS chain
stay
4: Wire comes out at the rear dropout

My bike doesn’t have a hole where the downtube meets the neck, so I ran the
wire under the downtube where I wouldn’t see it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Susie/Wolbis first rides

2024-11-21 Thread Jason Fuller
I got out on my favourite local loop this past weekend on the Susie, a 50km
gravel & light singletrack loop in the Seymour valley. I wrote it up on my
website mostly to convey the photos in full resolution that were popular in
the Fall Riding pics thread. The photos still do little justice for how
amazing it is to be in this forest during late November drizzle, easily my
favourite time of year to be out there despite the cold and wet.

This was the first bigger ride on the bike, as I've mostly been commuting
and barely topped 20km per ride prior to this aboard it.

Buy the Appa from Blue Lug! I just did and I'm SO happy. They are VERY low
stock, I emailed them and they only had a handful of each. I got the last

2024-11-21 Thread Isaak Oliansky
Didn't pay a penny for duties. The delivery was absolutely lightning fast.
Ordered on Friday, delivered to my house on Wednesday I think. A DHL driver
in Portland drove it personally to my house in Ashland, Oregon. The whole
thing was kind of wild. Also buying from Blue Lug gives you the opportunity
to get a couple of nitto goodies or whatever at great prices without having
to deal with their normally very high shipping prices.

[RBW] FS: Pedals. Lots of Them

2024-11-21 Thread Ted Durant
Hi gang -

Now that I've determined that Clem Smith pedals are what all of my bikes
wanted, I have a rather large collection of pedals that are otherwise going
to collect dust. So, I'm planning to take them to the Milwaukee Bicycle
Collective on Saturday, but before I do that I want to give my pals here a
first shot. Almost all of them are in used condition, some very used,
others "pretty" used. Unless otherwise noted. It's way too much to
photograph or even list individually. If there's something that you think
you want, send me a private message and we'll talk. I'm planning to
otherwise give it all away (to a good cause, if they want them), so I'm not
looking to make any money here.

Ok, here's what we have:

   1. a giant collection of Shimano SPD pedals.
   1. One MTB set (Deore level, I'd guess),
  2. Four road sets (3 Ultegra level and 1 Dura Ace level .. reminder,
  SPD, not SPD-R)
  3. Countless dual-sided (cage one side, binding other side)
   2. an almost as large collection of Egg Beaters
   1. basic ones ranging from lowest level to fairly spiffy (but no Ti -
those are still on my Riv Road)
  2. Two pairs of Egg-Beaters road pedals best used with their
specific cleat holders ... if you know, you know
   3. One pair of well used Campy Daytona pedals with cleats
   4. One pair of not-much-used MKS Mapstage pedals. By far and away the
most secure binding system other than the one-off customs that Pino made
for Grant. Real knee-wreckers if you crash. Another one of those if you
   know, you know...
   5. One pair of pretty-much-as-new VO Urban Platform pedals. I haven't
tried these with my Lems, yet, so I might end up keeping them. I tried them
with other shoes and without the half-clips didn't find enough traction on
   them.
   6. One pair of MKS touring Lite
   7. One pair of MKS Sylvan touring

(Saved the best for last to reward those who read all the way down.)

[RBW] Re: Bike Snob has done it again!

2024-11-21 Thread J J
Thanks for sending, Steve. Great BikeSnob piece.

Yesterday I happened to watch GCN's new video
 introducing the Colnago
Steelnovo. Interesting video on its own terms. It's cool to see
manufacturing processes in action. I still don't understand why they
ditched the steel fork in favor of the carbon fork. They didn't explain
that well.

Anyway, what was funny about the video was how they framed the "return to
steel" bikes as some innovative, newfangled idea.

So many ironies there no pun intended.

Re: [RBW] OGK grips: lessons learned - a follow-up question

2024-11-21 Thread Bill Lindsay
Maybe it partially has to do with California. Anything that is cheaper
than a tank of gas is pretty affordable, in my book. Any tool that has
lots of uses and gets used dozens of times per year is a good tool
investment, in my book. If the only thing you can possibly imagine using
an air compressor for is to install and remove grips, and if you
practically never install or remove grips, then I can see that $70 is big
price tag.

The other way to go is use $30-$40 grips that clamp on. The "tool" to
install and remove those is a $1 allen key that you maybe already have! :)

 Hi, all.

Well, failure is the outcome. I scratched my bar a teensy bit. Teensy
enough that I don't care, except that removing grips should not involve
scratching the bar at all. One grip came off after moderate effort in
delivering loads of alcohol and quite a bit of effort of twisting and
tugging. And the grip suffered damage that would prevent me from using it.
On the other grip I was much more careul in getting alcohol to it, thus
there was only the lightest of bar-scratching. That one required
more-than-moderate muscle to twist and tug that grip off, ruining the grip
 to help.

I suspect it might've gone better had I focused more on finding a
better way to lubricate the grip. I did what was readily do-able with the
resources at hand. Which, I'm confident, would've worked reasonably well
 to
remove an ESI Chunky with damage to neither grip nor bar .

So my take-away is: Whenever I decide to deploy ergo/knuckled OGK
grips, I'll do so assuming they are not coming off intact. They will not
 be
the grips I put on, say, while awaiting delivery of the grips I
 *really* want.

Re: [RBW] Bike Snob has done it again!

2024-11-21 Thread Patrick Moore
I particularly like the “Irony Drive Multi-Single Gear System” (IDMSGS) for
optimized power transfer, minimized friction losses, and intuitive gear
choice.

I think that really over-the-top marketing bullshit started in the cycling
industry in the late ‘80s — back in the “10 speed” days the marketing
depended on heirloom Yurapeen cachet, and the early mountain bikes were so
new that anything was “innovative” and marketable. Well, there was Hetchins
with the curvey stays and Bates with the Flying Gate and those flamboyant
chain designs, but it was all much simpler and psychologically much cruder
back then.

[Aside: My nastiest resume clients have been Chief Marketing Officers;
perhaps there’s a connection.]

“Psychologically much cruder.” But I wonder. “Stealth Carbon” and F2D and
UDH hangers — all that is pretty crudely obvious as marketing, too — is it
more sophisticated or just current? I remember that wonderful, meaningless
“Somewhere West of Laramie” ad for the Jordan Playbor motorcar in 1023.

I wish someone would take a generic Chinese-made carbon fiber frame, think
up performance acronyms for basic functional parts, and offer it for 18,000
Euros to see how well it sold based on market-speak and price alone.

Patrick Moore, who ride his wonderful Matthews with “RBFD-specific” design
and “LCIF” drivetrain technology. (That’s “road bike for dirt" — I know
that annoys at least one person; and “lotsa cogs in friction.”)

Hey Isaak!

Did you already receive yours? Curious about paying import duty and all that.

My wife has been stealing my Sam away for rides with her friends a little

 season.

Let me know if you've got anything, otherwise I'll wait for the Atlantis
 release in early 2025.
