Re: [RBW] Re: 2024 Appaloosa Thread

2024-08-12 Thread Dan
It's beautiful. Looks comfy and capable and just the right balance of black
and silver!

On the topic of Appaloosas, and entering the realm of pure speculation:
With a slacker head tube angle (using the Atlantis lugs?) and wider tyre
clearance, the Appaloosa sounds very similar indeed to the previous
Atlantis.
I wonder if that leaves room for the next Atlantis to shift to something
different?

Indeed 43 mm are generally not slender but I had a set of 42s on my Clem

good enough on gravel. Let us know how they work for you Richard!

Thanks all!

I ended up buying the Sake Ringyo MTE-100 at Kim's suggestion!

Currently using my backup B67 right now, as the B17 is out for repairs, but
will report back once the seatpost and my regular saddle are back in the
rotation.

Re: [RBW] Re: tire experiment

2024-08-12 Thread Patrick Moore
The nominally 48 mm, actually 49+ mm (27 mm IW rims) Oracle Ridges on my
Matthews dirt road bike look svelte and slim compared to the 60s they
replaced and compared to the 72 mm WTB Rangers on the Monocog I used to
own. They almost look lost under the 80 mm Kelpie fenders (designed for 72
X 584 and 60 X 622 tires) In fact, ~50 mm is the narrowest I'll use for an
allrounder bike in our sandy soil conditions.

 Hey Bill,

I’m waiting to hear back from Jeff Lyon for the details. With the light
weight and 435 stays I’m guessing cross vs sport tour. STA is 73, HTA 72,
my gross measurement of stack and reach were ~400 +/- 5mm and 600, rear end
 is 130mm

I’ll see if I can’t get an approximate BB drop with a line level.

The geometry chart still shows it having a slightly steeper headtube
and shorter top tube than the equivalent Atlantis, which suprises me every
time I've ever looked for this info. (You kind of have to extrapolate,
because the respective sizes alternate.) Will's email said they will be
 updating the website eventually/soon.

I've asked this before, but can anyone describe how the various
versions have evolved over time? I know the fork legs got stiffer after
the first batch, and the double top tube was dropped from the larger
 sizes,
but I'm particularly interested in geometry and tire clearance
 improvements.

I have more bikes than I need - especially Rivendells - but still
always daydream about that n+1. The Appaloosa is the model that has the
least overlap to the bikes I already have and - unlike any Atlantis ever
 -
comes in a size that would fit me. If it got longer and slacker, it would
 be even better.

Both are 59cm ST, 58 cm TT, 700c wheels and can fit 35mm tires and

Seat & Headtube angle 72.5 degrees

Selling this early 2000s custom steel Lyon frameset. I know you
don’t care about weight but the frameset weighs in at just under 6 lbs
 with
the headset. It has clearance for 40-42mm 700c tires in the front and
 more
in the back. Cool touches like the integrated cable hanger, fillet
 brazing
 and tube supports.

 58cm x 58cm CTC. 435mm chainstay. 1in threadless headset (steer can
be shimmed for 1 1/8) previous owner must have ran some massive tires
because it’s lost some paint from tire rub. It’s been sanded and
 painted
over with touch up (sorry I couldn’t get a match). Fortunately areas
 aren’t
 conspicuous.

No idea on value but figured I’d start asking at $1000 shipped?

Re: [RBW] Anodized Silver vs Polished Components. Which do you prefer?

2024-08-12 Thread Brian Turner
Why not have some fun with it? I like to have some sort of anodized
component color on all my bikes. My trouble is, that color usually turns
out to be gold no matter what... but it's fun and I think it looks cool.

Re: [RBW] Anodized Silver vs Polished Components. Which do you prefer?

2024-08-12 Thread luckyturnip
I have a titanium bike completely outfitted in polished goodies (Paul, White Industries, Velocity), and I have to say it’s gorgeous. I won this bike in a raffle and never would have treated myself to such luxury but it’s really a sight to see. I have the regular silver Paul brake levers and thumbies on a different bike and while the parts are awesome looking in that smoothly utilitarian Paul way, they don’t have the same luxury vibe (insane to say this about Paul, I know). I say if the bike is super special to you, go polished. LizOn Aug 12, 2024, at 12:12, Michael wrote:I'm struggling to decide between polished vs anodized silver for Bronze Green Sam build. 2024-08-12 Thread Brian Turner
My apologies. I misread your question. I assumed you were asking if you
should go with polished or an anodized ("pop") color.
In that respect, I tend to go down the path of letting the rim finish
choice dictate whether most of the other stuff is polished or just silver.

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

I'm 6'1 with longer arms and I LOVE my 57 sam, fit's like a glove. I have

My good friends are also both 6'1 and ride 57 sams. The most recent one was
a 2024 and Riv staff suggested 60cm, he went with the 57 with albatross
bars, he's thrilled.

I threw a $400 bid at it just for fun, and because it pisses me off that 4

FYI I spoke to Grant over the phone today and the new Appaloosa's are
indeed slacker. They have a 70 degree head tube angle in order to increase
the front-center and wheelbase. Apparently better for trail riding with no

light weight and 435 stays I’m guessing cross vs sport tour. STA is
 73, HTA
72, my gross measurement of stack and reach were ~400 +/- 5mm and 600,
 rear
 end is 130mm

I’ll see if I can’t get an approximate BB drop with a line level.

Re: [RBW] Re: tire experiment

2024-08-12 Thread Ray Varella
I did a similar tire swap on my platypus.
I had been running Rene Herse 55mm knobbies in endurance casing.
I recall Jan saying they have similar rolling resistance to the standard
casing and I have zero complaints about them.
I just wanted to try a bit smaller tire.
I went with the Ultradynamico Cava JFF in 48mm
The bike definitely steers a little quicker, not a lot but it does feel
like it rolls smoother.
I’m still nursing a torn hamstring but I rode for about 3 hours which is at
least an hour longer than I have been riding.
I have another bike that runs 42mm so the 48s were a good choice.
We are living in good times when it comes to tire choices.

[RBW] Re: Anodized Silver vs Polished Components. Which do you prefer?

2024-08-12 Thread Nick Payne
Anodised will look a bit better a few years down the road than polished.

On the Mason that I most recently built up, I had no choice of colour for a
lot of the components I was using - e.g. C-F rims are black, SRAM AXS
shifters/derailleurs are black, the Shimano XT M737 cranks I had are silver
anodised, as was the Ritchey seatpost, but I decided on a bit of colour
co-ordination to go with the Orange BxB saddlebag I already had and would
be using, so I fitted orange Hope disc calipers and used orange handlebar
tape.
