[RBW] Re: Which one to keep

2024-07-17 Thread Johnny Alien
If they were full crossover for me and I could honestly use either one in
all situations then I would take the one that I felt was the most
comfortable or honestly which one I just felt looked better. I will say
that if I was absolutely forced down to one Rivendell I think it would be
the Clem.

[RBW] Re: Which one to keep

2024-07-17 Thread NYCbikeguy
Having ridden both, I'd say that the clem may face some limitations when it
comes to heavier loaded rides (that you may not be expecting or planning)
because the flex on the frame is a lot more noticeable on the clem than the
platy.

Huh, weird.

In my limited experince, a front end hit is usually pretty obvious if
you're looking for it. I would also expect the damage to be right at the
lug tip, and it doesn't look to me like it is. Irregardless, I really
doubt whatever that is will ever be a (non-emotional) issue and it's easy
to keep an eye on. I would ride i with extreme prejudice...

I had substantial crack in the paint of my Clementine. My curiosity got to
me eventually and I sanded down the paint to the tubing and luckily the
frame was totally fine - I did realize how terrible the factory paint was
though. It was a substantial piece of mind knowing my frame wasn't toast vs
my terrible touch up.

[RBW] Re: Which one to keep

2024-07-17 Thread Joe Bernard
Hi Ray,

As a fellow Riv Rider of a certain age with a sorta-mixte custom (Platy-ish
design) and a Clem L, I would choose Clem. The stepover is lovely, the tire
clearance grand, it doubles as a trail bike and just plain has character.
To quote the good and great Leah Peterson, Clems are gems!

[RBW] Re: Which one to keep

2024-07-17 Thread Chris Halasz
Ray

Very impressed with the chair!

I've built a number of items in our home, more Thos. Moser 'shaker' style,
but never a chair!

As to the cars: We often ride through the San Ysidro Ranch on our bike
rides, and there were a half dozen of those things in the lot. I think
they're funny. Makes my back groan to think of getting in and out of one.
But my back is very happy riding the Clem.

[RBW] Electric Bikes and Organized Rides

2024-07-17 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
A friend and I did the Seattle to Portland ride this past weekend (205 miles in
either one or two days), and we were both surprised to see a number of riders
on electric bikes.

I haven’t done many large cycling events since the rise in popularity of
electric bikes. When I did large-scale rides like STP pre-COVID, everybody
would have been on a regular, human-powered bike. So seeing powered bikes on a
“cycling” event struck us as a little strange.

What is everyone’s experience with this? I’ll admit I am a little skeptical
about combining electric- and human-powered bikes in the same event, but that’s
probably a reflection of my cycling history. The events I usually ride, which
are mostly RUSA-sanctioned randonneuring, would definitely not allow any kind
of powered bike.

What do YOU think? Should electric bikes be allowed on events like RAGBRAI,
STP, centuries, etc.? What limits would you impose, if any? Or should they have
their own events?

Interested to hear what the group thinks.

Holy smokes that’s a lotta bike. It looks like one of Bill Walton’s old
rides (look for Dead stickers on the dt). I stayed in aptly named Eden Utah
skiing this past winter. Man, just fell in love with that place.

expensive so i'm waiting for a sale. the kickstand, i think that will haunt
me for all of my days.

[RBW] Re: Electric Bikes and Organized Rides

2024-07-17 Thread Karl Gee
I like that people are coming out to events and enjoying themselves and
sharing the benefits of being outdoors. There are groups that I am fast
aging into, and electric bikes is absolutely one of them. The confidence
that I can get home after a long ride, or make it up a decent grade without
passing out is what an e-bike affords me (one day, don't own one yet). More
bikes on the roads the better, kids on e-scooters at 25mph not so much.

Re: [RBW] Electric Bikes and Organized Rides

2024-07-17 Thread David Ross
I used to be fairly opposed to them until I figured out that almost
everyone I know who rides them is just using them to be able to do things
that they otherwise couldn’t do. I’m 51 now and I can see a future in which
I can extend my cycling by another decade with the help of an e bike. I’m
considering buying one for my fiancé because she’s about 2/3 as fast as I
am and can cover around 2/3 or so of the distances I like to ride. Both of
us think it would be really cool if she could do my rides at my pace
because she really does enjoy getting out there.

[RBW] Re: Which one to keep

2024-07-17 Thread Ray Varella
Hey Joe,
They’re both great bikes but the Clems are kind of sleepers. You wouldn’t
guess they ride as nice as they do just by looking.

Chris, Thos Moser makes some really nice furniture.
I’m going to build a tool chest to work out the construction details and
then build a blanket chest.
Chairs weren’t that difficult for me once I got over the handwringing.
I use hand tools and a workbench that I built in my carport.
The chair I showed was my third one and I’m really satisfied with the
comfort. I gave the second to my neighbor and he loves it.

I may end up keeping both bikes but the Clem is staying till my niece wants
it.

Cheers
Ray

Having ridden both, I'd say that the clem may face some limitations
when it comes to heavier loaded rides (that you may not be expecting or
planning) because the flex on the frame is a lot more noticeable on the
 clem than the platy.

Re: [RBW] Electric Bikes and Organized Rides

2024-07-17 Thread rltilley
I own one. I have a Tern e-Cargo bike that allows me to ride more. I don’t have free time for recreational riding currently so errands are the only way I get to ride. I do as many errands as I can on “normal” bikes but the Tern lets me get more miles in since it allows me to ride when I would otherwise need to take the car. My e-bike has no throttle. It is pedal assist only. That said, I don’t like e-bikes on the trails and that is getting more and more common around here. I think I’d be ok with pedal assist e-bikes on organized rides.  They would basically allow people to participate who would otherwise need to sit it out. I’d prefer if they were limited to pedal assist only models and had assist cutoffs at 20 mph or so. Allowing E-bikes with throttles on an organized ride with inexperienced cyclists is likely a bad idea.Robert TilleySan Diego, CASent from my iPhoneOn Jul 17, 2024, at 4:53 PM, 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch wrote:A friend and I did the Seattle to Portland ride this past weekend (205 miles in either one or two days), and we were both surprised to see a number of riders on electric bikes. I haven’t done many large cycling events since the rise in popularity of electric bikes. So seeing powered bikes on a “cycling” event struck us as a little strange. What is everyone’s experience with this? I’ll admit I am a little skeptical about combining electric- and human-powered bikes in the same event, but that’s probably a reflection of my cycling history. The events I usually ride, which are mostly RUSA-sanctioned randonneuring, would definitely not allow any kind of powered bike. What do YOU think? Should electric bikes be allowed on events like RAGBRAI, STP, centuries, etc.? What limits would you impose, if any? Or should they have their own events?Interested to hear what the group thinks.

[RBW] Re: Electric Bikes and Organized Rides

2024-07-17 Thread Hoch in ut
I know some get offended at the sight of one. At the end of the day,
they’re two wheeled machines that get ridden by folks who like to ride. I
say, hooray for them. Let them come and enjoy being outside with other
people. Unless you’re in an elite, pro-level racing event, WHO CARES? .
It’s better than having them sit at home or worse, be out of the road in a
car.

[RBW] Re: First Post - A (Fixed!) Atlantis

2024-07-17 Thread Philip Williamson
That is FANTASTIC.
Years ago a fixed gen 1 Atlantis was posted to the list from Craigslist.
Possibly the most beausaged Riv I’d ever seen, as well.

Ride well!

[RBW] Re: Your Riv's Next Upgades / Parts Swaps

2024-07-17 Thread Philip Williamson
My Quickbeam is pretty dialed. Enough that I’ve given away or sold spare
wheelsets or built other bikes around them.

The bell is pretty terrible, though. It’s a Sogreni fancy-pants unit I got
from a Riv garage sale for $5. Apparently someone there also found it hard
to ring and dull sounding! When I ride I imagine ways I can hack it so it
doesn’t suck, but I probably just need to replace it with a good bell
that’s easy and satisfying to ring.

It’s my only Riv, and I’ve had it for 20 years, so it shouldn’t be too
surprising that there’s not much left to tweak.
