I found a steep very short trail that lead up to the railroad bed and ties. It took awhile for me to maneuver myself with my Clem up this steep small incline, applying my brakes in slow steps. I made it alright. I did not feel safe enough to ride my bike along side of the old railroad bed, because the ground was uneven and to the right of me the ground dropped off below me. I walked my bike all the way to the railroad bridge taking in all the wonderful colored golden fallen maple leaves on the ground. There was no one else around. I must have walked about more than a quarter of a mile and then some. The railroad bridge finally came into my view. It has been many years since I was back here on foot. There had been a chain-link fence across the entrance of the bridge crossing to not allow people to cross it.  However, this time, there was no fence on my side nor there was none across on the other side. It was all open to my surprise. In fulfilling my curiosity, the railroad rails ended to the entrance of the railroad bridge. My phone rang. My wife was asking me, if I was alright. I replied, "Yes". I told her that I would call her, when I was heading back. I maneuvered my Clem in and around several railroad ties in preparation to walk across the railroad bridge. This will be an exciting memory I told myself. I was very cautious in walking my Clem over and onto each railroad tie to reach the other side.  I paused occasionally to take pictures, holding my cellphone very carefully not to drop it down through the cracks of the railroad ties into the river. Each time after taking a picture, I would carefully place my phone back into my vest pocket and zip it up not to lose it. About half way, I scared an adult blue heron into flight swooping out over my head, as he called out. After that, I decided to take a 180 degree video with great care. I proceeded on and make it to the other side into the next county. From there, my eyes noticed that the railroad rails and ties continued on through the forest. I paused and took more pictures looking back and the river below me. The sun was slowly going down behind the trees. It was most definitely time to head back in this late afternoon.I made it safely back across the railroad bridge. It was a long walk back to the spot, where I had came up from that steep embankment down to the trail, where I could ride my Clem back home. At some point, whilst I was walking, I almost twisted my left angle under soft soil. Thank goodness that I did not. I made it home safe and happy in going out on my personal adventure in the sunny fall weather. Soon after arriving home, I very quickly, I felt my hips and muscles hurting from my journey. I took some acetaminophen to help reduce the pain.  I am not as young as I used to be. However, my heart remains younger than my body in riding my bicycle and going on adventures. It's too bad to see an uncommon Riv frame that was rippled and dimpled by
one owner and left outside *over winter* by the next. Perhaps with the
damage there's some more room to negotiate the price. It would be nice if a
new owner could resurrect it. But I'm worried it's worse than it looks
given the current owner's lack of bicycle savvy (bad pics, missing
important pics, incorrect wheel size).

AFAIK Bernie Mikkelson does repair work for Rivendell (when he can get to
it) and if this frame has been inspected and evaluated by him that would
give me some degree of confidence. Even more if I could call him and he
remembered the frame.

I can speak to the VO hub quality. I have the silver VO 135 hub on the
wheelset I run on my Appa, on the Gus before that. It’s been a great hub.
Lots of miles and it still looks and feels great. Can’t speak for
serviceability yet, but it seems like any ordinary Shimano hub in that
regard.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB - 135 hub

2023-10-31 Thread greenteadrinkers
Just to add another option, Analog sells both road and touring hubs by a
company called Bithex. I have the Bithex touring rear hub with Cliffhangers
on my Sam, no mechanical issues, nice hub. Have not tried to service it,
need to learn those skills. Recently, I ordered the road version of the
Bithex hubs. Planning to have a lightweight wheelset built for my Sam with
the rims Crust makes. The rear Bithex road seems strong enough for anything
I could throw at it. Analog doesn't list the weight for each hub.

All that said the V/O rear hub is on sale for $75!

I've had a WB Loader as a daily carry on my commuter for a few years. I
really like the overall design - materials, size, features. There's just
two minor things I don't like -

1) The front pocket REALLY needs a button or some other closure, I had my
phone fly out and crack just hitting a small bump on a sidewalk. I've since
added my own button without too much difficulty.
2) Where the large velcro strap covers the roll top it rubs a patch of bare
cordura every time and has started wearing pretty quickly. There should be
a piece of nylon or some other harder wearing piece covering that strip.

Can't be beat for the price, some of the other 137 totes are easily double
the price.

[RBW] Re: Expert level bike commuting strategies?

2023-10-31 Thread Tom Wyland
I've been commuting for 13 years. My current commute is suburban, about 6
miles each way. Lots of great advice here and as expected I learned
something new (sealant in tubes! sign me up!)
I would try new things to constantly improve your commute (equipment,
route, clothes)

   - Try changing up luggage, cockpit (handlebar, grips, stems), tires, etc
   - Dynamo lights are awesome and help with safety during the day
   - I'm prepared, but I don't change my schedule for a weather *forecast*
   - I leave clothes and another computer at work to avoid lugging them
every day. I shower before I leave.
   - Choose different routes to avoid left hooks/cross traffic, etc. It's
worth making your trip longer sometimes.
   - I got an ebike and take that on some days when I'm really unmotivated
   or it's hot/windy, etc.
   - The time difference between really pushing myself and just pleasantly
cruising is like 5-7 minutes, tops.

Thanks,
Tom

One more purge. Price don't include shipping, will ship using Pirateship.

1) Thomson Masterpiece Setback Seatpost 27.2 x330 Uncut - $70
--In great shape, the top seems to have some material filed off by the
previous owner for saddle clearance. Not noticeable while installed (I
hadn't noticed for the past 2+ years this was on my Fitz). I'm replacing
with a Paul Ti and Handsome post with more setback.

2) White Industries Stainless Steel Bottom Bracket 113mm - $70
--Selling for what I paid. I ended up neeting a longer BB (118mm) for my
Ram.

3) Compass Babyshoe Pass 650x42 Tan Extralight - $75
--Extras after tearing down my 650b Trek and converting my ram to 650x48.
These are the two tires from thoes builds with the most tread left.

4) Simworks Little Nick Steal Bar 31.8 Heat Treated - $70
--I never used these, but they have been used by a previous owner. Bought
them for a neighbor's build, but she ended up going with different bars.
More info here:

5) Titanium Vargo Camp Stove/GSI Titanium Pot/Fuel Bottle Bundle - $50

I concur! I got mine over the weekend and went with a size 13, though I
usually wear size 11-12 in most shoes. I compared the length with the Size
11 Crocs that these are replacing and the size 13 Mountain Clogs were the
same length.

+1 on the RAL WB Loader, use mine all the time for commuting to work, can
be overstuffed super tall. also works as a tote or shoulder bag when off
the bike.
i also have a swift lil loafer that fits in the basket, which is tidier but
not able to overstuff, so carrying extra means piling on top.

[RBW] Re: Expert level bike commuting strategies?

2023-10-31 Thread Brian Forsee
Lots of great info in here. I have an easy commute, about 4 miles each way,
but I have the constantly fluctuating midwest weather to deal with. I'll
offer a counterpoint to some previously mentioned advice of minimizing what
you carry. Overall I agree with keeping your load to a minimum, with the
exception of some clothing accessories. In the fall/winter i keep some
stuff in my commute bag full time.

Things like: Rain Gear. 2 pair gloves (I have gloves for below freezing
and some dotty wools and keep them both on the bike. Wear the wrong ones to
start? Pull over and swap em out real quick. No sweat!) Same goes for
winter head gear. Maybe even an extra sweater.

I find i fret over the details of the weather less when i know i can easily
make some mid-ride adjustments to my clothing.

Moving on from some grey grid Sackville bags which may be of interest to
the group. Prices include tracked shipping in CONUS, and I prefer
transactions via Paypal G&S (I'll cover the fees).

   -

Saddlesack Large with Kangaroo Pouch. Bought this on closeout but I've
found my frames are too small to run a large comfortably. Note this version
doesn't come with a strap for the seatpost and must be used with a rear
   rack. $180
   -

Shopsack Medium. Fits the classic Wald 137. Lightly used but a little
dirty and white staining from sunblock - see picture. $50
   -

Clembasack. Fits the deeper Wald 198 "Bosco" basket. Lightly used. $40

[RBW] Re: Bedrock Mountain Clogs in Stock!

2023-10-31 Thread Brent Knepper
just trying mine on today and I too went up from a usual 10 to a 11. at
first I was worried I there still wasn't enough room with my cute winter
wool socks on, until I realized a separate layer of cardboard forms were
still hiding inside, but all good once I realized my mistake :)

I'm a big socks n chacs fan in the shoulder szns, and I will say the
bedrock soles are hella flat in comparison to chacos's arch cradling
technology. anyone else notice a similar arch-love disparity?

Bumping this down to $1150 shipped ($1100 for local pickup).

On Monday, 16 October 2023 at 16:47:50 UTC-5 Nathan F wrote:

I’ve decided to sell my 55cm Platypus from the original run in the “Lime
Olive” color.

There are maybe 600 miles or so on the frame. I’m only selling it because I
don’t have anywhere to store it after a recent move. Bummer! Here's how I
built it if you're looking for some inspiration
.

It’s in overall great shape, with some very minor cable run on the NDS
headtube, and some minor marks from a bike rack on the DS seat-stay and
mid-stay. No dents or anything major. As I exclusively ran it singlespeed,
the chain stay and hanger are in perfect shape, though the inside of the
dropouts are a little marked up from fiddling with the ENO hub.

BB/seatpost/headset are included, as are “The Platypus Care Guide” and the
accompanying documentary DVD Riv gave away. I think I even have the
original paint covers for the canti-studs, but will need to look around for
them.

Pictures here: https://imgur.com/a/9AD7Twu

I am asking $1250 net to me shipped from Austin, TX (or free local
delivery!).

[RBW] Re: Bedrock Mountain Clogs in Stock!

2023-10-31 Thread Steve
Brent, I grabbed a a leather pair of the clogs when they were first
released and I have to agree with you - my feet also found then lacking
adequate arch support. As for cycling in them, the soles are also a bit
soft and flexy for my taste.

So there you go - I like them for casual wear, but not for covering longer
distances, whether walking or riding.
