Any less than 10cm extension and I’d worry about knee strikes on the ends of the albatross bars when they’re this low. And I wouldn’t use bar end shifters with the current setup for the Sam reason. My next move is to try swapping the Nexus rd for an XT rapid rise rd with a 13t lower pulley wheel (replacing the 11t original). The Nexus doesn’t take kindly to heavy pedaling pressure uphill in a low gear, it starts to skip. This is probably because I’ve got it way past the max gear size and chain wrap capacities (46/30t crankset, 11-40t cassette). If I was less heavy I suspect it wouldn’t be a problem, but I’m hoping the wider wrap/capacity of the XT rd will eliminate this issue. In the “hoods” (pulling on the inner bar ends) the Charlie is a rocket that pulls my weight off the seat to pedal harder and faster like in the drops or hoods. I'm still loving mine. The only change I made since my last update was
moving to slighly wider losco bars. At some point I am going to throw on
some paul minimoto brakes but there is no real reason other than having
some Paul parts. It should still be coming from Rivendell but I am not as
fond of the updates they made so I am glad to have the proto version.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell paint color repetition: Your thoughts

2023-04-24 Thread lconley
I have 11 Rivendells. 7 of them are some shade of blue (5 are similar
metallic blues, but the Betty Foy and Mystery Bike are very different
non-metallic blues), two are non-metallic greens (Bombadil is Hunqapillar
green, Rosco Bubbe is matte flanker green), a black Clementine and the
orange metallic Custom.
I like the golds. Don't like the silvers. Not a fan of mustard.
I love the grey & kidney bean, cream pin striped combination.
Orange is always a good choice.
I would like to see more reds and purples and I would love a yellow - my
fifty year old Paramount came in Kool Lemon, but Grant discouraged yellow
on my custom due to it being hard to get a yellow that would go with the
cream headtube.
Not too wild about the Hunqapillar green, but I kind of like the matte
flanker green.
I would like to see a metallic root beer or a metallic copper.

Re: [RBW] Introducing the Charlie H Gallop Protovelo

2023-04-24 Thread DJC
I spoke with Vince three or four months ago about the Charlie project and
he said they have it slotted for a 2024 production run. Hopefully this will
happen, as I'm definitely interested in one as a daily commuter to
complement my Clem H. The Clem is my workhorse and heavy hauler, whereas
the Charlie would be my "fast" commuter.

Nitto Labarross with 10cm extension Technomic

Both were raised pretty high but the Albatross is nearly the the
minimum insertion line (1cm shy) while the Portola was about 4cm shy of
 min
 insertion line.

I’m a heavy guy with long torso and short legs, brooks B17 saddle
almost as far back as it will go on a S83 setback seatpost.

The Albatross bar setup is the same stem/bar setup I used on my
Cheviot. With the inner bar ends I get tons of added forward reach to pull
on or lean into, if I didn’t have those I’d probably want at least 11cm of
stem extension though. Any less than 10cm extension and I’d worry about
knee strikes on the ends of the albatross bars when they’re this low. And
 I
wouldn’t use bar end shifters with the current setup for the Sam reason.

My next move is to try swapping the Nexus rd for an XT rapid rise rd
with a 13t lower pulley wheel (replacing the 11t original). The Nexus
doesn’t take kindly to heavy pedaling pressure uphill in a low gear, it
starts to skip. This is probably because I’ve got it way past the max gear
size and chain wrap capacities (46/30t crankset, 11-40t cassette). If I
 was
less heavy I suspect it wouldn’t be a problem, but I’m hoping the wider
wrap/capacity of the XT rd will eliminate this issue.

In the “hoods” (pulling on the inner bar ends) the Charlie is a rocket
that pulls my weight off the seat to pedal harder and faster like in the
drops or hoods. On the hand grips I’m in “sit up and beg” mode - very tall
to see well in traffic and nice for standing up as I pedal uphills, but
relaxed enough to putter around town for as long as I could want. The long
arm (e.g., normal) v-brakes are just perfect and so strong I can’t imagine
ever wishing for disc brakes. What a fun and versatile bike! These should
sell out every time, it’s the best Riv I’ve been on (which includes:
Cheviot, Sam Hillborne, Saluki, Homer, Gus, Suzie, Rosco Baby). Fast like
Homer, strong and versatile like Sam, better braking than any other,
 swoopy
 goodness.

Looks great, Jason, and sounds like a good compliment to your other bikes.
It's cool to have your rigs squared and sorted for particular purposes.

Dustin — I'm not 100% but I think that might be a seat-tube mounted folding
lock that has a cage that mounts to the bottle bosses.

Hi Houston -

If my schedule allows, I’m in, likely on my Sam Hillborne. Could probably
coax an Atlantis-owner friend to join, too. He’s in Glassell Park; I’m in
Glendale.

Paging Joe Mullins, who is also on this list and local, but is a new dad
and not sure how much free time he’s got.

Ben Adrian of Echo Park had organized a min Riv-heavy ride in NELA/DTLA a
few months back. He has since unloaded his one Riv but built up a Rivish
Soma that I’ve yet to see. And perhaps he would join, too.

Thanks for proposing this!

[RBW] Re: Rivendell paint color repetition: Your thoughts

2023-04-24 Thread Miles T
I’m a sucker for metallic colors… it’s like you get 2 for 1. A metallic
colored bike looks totally different in overcast weather vs a sunny day.
But the solid colors are great too. That dark green on the Clem “H” models
a while back is one of my favorite colors on any riv. At this point, they
have a wide selection of colors and I like seeing them pop up on different
models over time.

I love that scheme on your custom, Joe. Especially that cream outline on
the red accents.

Beautiful Sam, Daniel! My experience on other Riv's (Quickbeam, ATB,

the steering feel lighter, twitchier. In the case of the Quickbeam, I
didn't like it at all and went right back to drop bars. But, I'm a drop bar

Jason, it looks like such a solid and perfect commuter, I was surprised
when you let it go. Makes me want one, if only production models had canti
posts... Its nice having a dedicated fendered and racked bike. I recently
took off the front basket rack from my Joe to take it on some single track
adventures. It was meant to be temporary but the lightened front end feels
so good.. makes me want to have a different dedicated basket rack/fender
city bike. Bikesnob had some similar musings about his rock combo and homer
recently.

before, but with a few differences such as a B17 vs C17 saddle, triple
crankset with early 90's XT, silver fenders.. but the same bars plugged
back in without so much as being unwrapped. It's truly ideal for my
everyday needs and I was crazy to have sold it in the first place - now
 the

I haven't heard much out of Riv on this bike... wonder if it's still on

My favorite pedal ever is the Simworks Bubbly. I have them on my Clem & they are really good for pavement & even light dirt/gravel. But, they just are not “sticky” enough (for me) on my Gus on singletrack  - I need pins. I built the Gus with leftover DMR Vault pedals. They are big enough and my 5/10 shoes do not move. But the Taco just plain looks so good & is slightly bigger than the vault. If I could be certain they will be as sticky as the Vault’s I would be trying to score a set.Sent from my iPhoneOn Apr 24, 2023, at 12:52 PM, Johnny Alien wrote:There are so may great platform pedals out there right now that I am not sure there is reason for another one but its nice looking. Re: [RBW] Re: New Sim Works Taco Pedals: Looks appealing

2023-04-24 Thread DavidP
I use 5-10 Freeriders on my MTBs with pedals that have screw type pins
similar to those on the Vault pedals, and also have a few different types
of pinned pedals on other types of bikes.

In my experience pins like those on the Taco pedals will work fine with
five-tens, but will not be quite as locked in as the smaller diameter screw
type pins on pedals like the Vault, which really dig into the 5/10s and
require lifting your foot to reposition.

The Taco pedal pins split the difference between the above mentioned more
aggressive pins and the even less aggressive star/torx shaped pins that are
available on many (inexpensive) pedals marketed for more casual use.

I have pedals with the less aggressive star/torx pins on my Platypus and
they work great with casual shoes (trail runners, vans type treads, etc.)
without tearing them up (or me if I brush against them). I tried using my
five-tens on these pedals and they weren't slippery but offered no
advantage to casual shoes, so I keep the 5-10s for dedicated MTB use.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell paint color repetition: Your thoughts

2023-04-24 Thread Ryan
Yes, Joe...you have a great color scheme there...which is a good thing
because we see a lot of it...and that's totally OK. I like looking at it😊

I really like the harvest gold; got it in 2001 when it was fairly unusual,
but offered as a custom color. Looks different depending on light(sunlight
vs cloud). I agree with Laing that a butter yellow would be great,
especially if it had panels and headtube in a root beer or coffee color.
The standard cream would get lost because there's not enough contrast. I
absolutely do not need another custom but if I were in the market and Riv
still offered customs, I think that I could go for that.

I do like Leah's Raspberry and that mermaid color is quite attractive too.

Wait, the Platys are coming in silver soon? Crap, I guess good thing I just
got my Charlie back or I'd be dropping a bunch of money for that.

I'm late to the conversation, but my read is that Grant & co spend a lot
more time on color selection than is business-smart to do so, because they
want it to be exactly right - so when they get one that passes a vote, they
hang onto it. As for my opinion about it, I like how they do it because if
you love a certain color, you just have to be patient for it to come to
your preferred model - or, conversely, if you like a model but not the
available colors, you'll hopefully be accommodated on the next batch. I do
think that colors should be retired every few years for new ones though!

I agree Eric, this pedal appeals to me with the large platform and pinned
construction. Also saw the Gordito frame and thought, YES this is a good
use of that tooling! I bought Allways for the Charlie (well, for the
Wombat, but) and even though their platform is fairly roomy, they feel too
small vs. the Monarchs which have become the gold standard for me. I would
give these a go!

Re: [RBW] Rivendell paint color repetition: Your thoughts

2023-04-24 Thread J J
In an ocean of charcoal, slate, and black bikes, I just appreciate the wide
range of colors Rivendell puts on their bikes.

However, I have what I think is a minority opinion: I’m about 75 percent in
favor of no more than two specific colors for specific models (**with
exceptions for custom paint jobs, which are at the buyer’s discretion, with
Riv’s final approval of course**). The production colors become part of a
particular model's “brand" or visual identity. This is important.

For example, it’s hard to imagine Atlantis production models in any color other
than the Atlantis blue/green… even though there are Atlantises painted in
lovely one-off colors. It would be odd if any other production model were
painted in the Atlantis color. The Atlantis geometry has changed tremendously
over the years. You might even say that the Atlantis green/blue *is itself* a
huge part of the Atlantis brand because the color has been a constant through
the various Atlantis permutations.

Another example: I like that Hunqs came in two color schemes: the early runs
were grey and kidney bean red, and the later runs were green. Now Joe’s
fantastic custom was inspired by the grey and red Hunq scheme. But it’s a
custom, a one-off, slightly different, and ultimately it was Joe’s prerogative.
He made a very tasteful choice.

I think the Platypus was the first model in mermaid (?). Anyway, when I see
mermaid I think Platypus, not Gus or anything else. I don’t get why any model
other than the Platypus should be in mermaid! It’s a strong brand association.
The lovely sparkly raspberry of Leah’s Platypus, being a unique one off, does
not weaken the Platypus mermaid brand because raspberry was not a production
color.

And as much as I like the lovely olive green as a color, the number of models
in this green suggests brand confusion and inconsistency.

I do think that variations of similar colors across model is fine. They should
be different enough not to confuse them, though.

Like I said, my opinion is probably in the small minority.

Are there not going to be canti mounts on the production? That’s a huge

Both were raised pretty high but the Albatross is nearly the the

 of min
 insertion line.

I’m a heavy guy with long torso and short legs, brooks B17 saddle
almost as far back as it will go on a S83 setback seatpost.

The Albatross bar setup is the same stem/bar setup I used on my
Cheviot. With the inner bar ends I get tons of added forward reach to
 pull
on or lean into, if I didn’t have those I’d probably want at least
 11cm of
stem extension though. Any less than 10cm extension and I’d worry
 about
knee strikes on the ends of the albatross bars when they’re this low.
 And I
wouldn’t use bar end shifters with the current setup for the Sam
 reason.

My next move is to try swapping the Nexu

Re: [RBW] Introducing the Charlie H Gallop Protovelo

2023-04-24 Thread Johnny Alien
Yeah I think it had to do with the brake pull situation. Most road brakes
won't match with v brakes which means if you have a road setup vs a
mountain setup you would need cantis or mini-v's. Since there are
decreasing options for cantis they were leaning on mini-v's but I guess
they didn't care for the options there. So they went back on the "designed
for sweptbacks" and decided to push the albastache bars and road brakes.
This is all a theory based on some of the stuff I remember reading from
them.

Re: [RBW] Introducing the Charlie H Gallop Protovelo

2023-04-24 Thread Pancake
Love mine with v-brakes - that’s what makes it perfect to me really so I’m
thrilled I got a prototype. But they’re right about mini-v-brakes just not
quite working. I tried 4 different models with different arm lengths
(82-90mm) and it was never right: too much pull required to get pad to rim
contact, but then too much mechanical advantage so very limited modulation.

But with standard v-brakes (with linear pull / long pull) the bike shines.
Modulation but also super stopping power that caliper and sidepull brakes
can’t match. That’s why it is replacing my Sam instead of the Sam getting
brake mounts welded on.

I’ve probably put 2,000 miles of this bike and it’s almost always my go to:
commuting or dirt or a century ride - I’d be happy with the proto-Charlie
for any of those!

Inverted albatross bars are perfect for 22.2mm v-brake lever clamps while
giving a super shallow drop position. Bar ends mounted forward in the curve
of the albatross bars gives a hood-like position I love too.

Count me in.

I'm in South Pasadena (orange Hillborne bought in 2009). Haven't browsed
this forum in a few years, but decided to check in because I wanted to go
on a group ride. Oddly enough, I saw a parked Atlantis at the 626 Golden
Streets event yesterday. Seems like the perfect time to meet up with some
other folks, especially since some of the newer Rivs look drastically
different.

Cheers,
