Re: [RBW] Re: Hub sounds in Kraftwerk's Tour de France: 1983 and 2003

2022-03-25 Thread Eric Marth
I'm glad to hear from a few Kraftwerk fans, I'm not super familiar but
finally getting around to them.

Sean, seems they have taken pretty careful control of their catalog and
legacy. Once they had boiled down their sound, philosophy and aesthetic
they decided to exclude some of the work they did to find their way.

I dig that track you posted, also dig Neu! Seems repetition and melody were
mainstays for them throughout.

[RBW] Tubolito tubes: how flat-proof are they really?

2022-03-25 Thread Patrick Moore
Has anyone used Tubolitos in goathead country, without sealant? How proof
against thorn flats were yours? Please say which Tubolito model and where
you ride.

I'm quite happy with Orange Seal Endurance for fat, low pressure tires, but
I've gone back to tubes (*) for my 559 X 42s, and have only ever used tubes
for my 559 X 28s. With Orange Seal *Regular* these work about 95%
(metaphor, not measurement) as well as Endurance in the fat tubeless tires.

But if Tubolitos are thorn proof enough for only occasional (=< 1 every 100
miles), I'd happily pay the price to go back to tubes without the
(admittedly minor) hassle of sealant.

Anyone?

The reviews I've seen haven't been long term reviews, and most of these
reviews did not test them in thorn environments, but at least one US SW
rider said that he found that they don't protect against cactus thorns.

(*) I used the 42s tubeless on EQ 21 rims, designed for tubes, and had only
minor problems with setup, but the fear of burping or beads coming undone
after a flat made me go back to tubes. I've been using very light Schwalbe
SV11A 559 X 23 mm tubes (between 60 and 70 grams) in the 42s with OS
regular formula -- so far so good, but I do have lightweight Schwalbe SV
14A 1.8" tubes (claimed 100 grams, actually about 120 grams) if I ever need
them. I use the 559 X 23s in the 28 mm Elk Pass tires, too.

[RBW] Re: Clem wheel woes: To rebuild or not to build...

So, I put the RH Juniper Hill tires on, and the new shoes make a big
difference! The Clem feels so much lighter and yet there's still plenty of
cush and grip off pavement. Thank you again for all the great
recommendations.

Help! I'm stuck in analysis paralysis... I have a size 45 Clem complete

so I had my local bike shop rebuild the stock front wheel with a SON hub.
My clem feels quick enough for me - I'm a slow rider, and the weight
doesn't bother me, except for when I'm riding uphill, and there are a lot
of hills where I live. Still, I have wheel fomo, and I can't stop thinking
about how good the Clem could be if I were to put on different wheels than
 the stock wheels.

I'm considering a bunch of options, with the top ones being:

 1. Get a set of new, relatively lightweight wheels without Dyno for
daytime riding (which is what I mostly do anyway). Keep Clem stock wheels
for when I really need the Dyno. I'd have two sets of wheels.

 2. Get new rims (Velocity Cliffhangers?) and salvage the SON hub - Rich
can use the hub in rebuilding the front wheel. This leaves me with an
 extra
 Clem stock rear wheel.

 3. Be happy with what I have.

 What would you do?

[RBW] Note To Future Clem L Buyers

2022-03-25 Thread Johnny Alien
I was able to grab a 52 Clem L from Crust when they listed them on Wed and
it was delivered today. I had zero idea that Crust was close to me! It came
late so I only got it out of the box and roughly together. A note to those
looking to buy one of these later this year from Rivendell. They offer the
option of pulling the bikes and going over them (making small adjustments
and such) then reboxing before shipping to you. I have no idea if that cost
money but if so pay whatever it costs. These do not come straight from
Taiwan in ready to go shape. The brakes are not set up properly at all.
Cables were crossed where they shouldn't be crossed. I had to remove loads
of stuff and put them back on. If you are good to do it all on your own or
if you are taking it right to a shop then you can skip it. Otherwise have
them go over it.

A few initial thoughts:

   - I wish they would have stayed with the big pulley Altus derailleur.
The one they have on this is nice and all but just doesn't look as sweet.
I know that means using friction shifters vs index BUT
   - This thing should come with friction shifters vs the trigger guy. It
just should. I am going to throw on some of those clicky friction guys they
   used to use.
   - These Tektro brake levers that are on the most current batch are huge
and ugly. They have that plastic chrome look. I know that this is a bike
that uses affordable stuff where it makes sense but there is a line for me.
These have to go and ALSO
   - I don't understand the backwards mounted brake levers. I understand
with the thumbshifters but I don't get why the screws should go on the
outside. And once they are all wired up there is no easy switching them
   back.
   - The toscos look right up my alley. I was going to throw some Billie
bars on this but the tosco bars are going to stay for awhile.
   - I think they should stop including the 50 reflectors, kickstand, and
cheap plastic bell and bring back the composite clem pedals they used to
   include

I am pumped to get it up and running. Until I get the friction shifters on
I am going to move that trigger guy down next to the stem like Will
suggests. I'm always up to try something new and it seems wise to get that
thing further away from all the places I grip.

[RBW] Re: Note To Future Clem L Buyers

2022-03-25 Thread Joe Bernard
The reversed brake levers mirror the reversed thumbies so you don't end up
with a shift lever jammed into the protruding end of a clamp. If you really
do want to swap them it's easy to release the cables at the lever (brakes):
unhook the v-brakes, then pull the now-slack cable out of the lever and
swap 'em 👍

[RBW] Re: Note To Future Clem L Buyers

2022-03-25 Thread Johnny Alien
I am going to put different brake levers on (these are just ugly) so it
won't be an issue. I actually have a bar with a reverse (inside mount)
thumbshifter and the brakes are on normal and don't seem to interfere. But
they do it more often than me so maybe its certain combos that are
problematic.

I’m sure it was. Somebody else took some other photos of it either at the
finish or one of the controls. Fixies were just as unusual then at PBP as they
are now—really, there’s no good reason to do that ride on a fixed gear. What

Hi Gabriel -

Congratulations on selling the frame. Very glad you were able to sell the

 Hello all,

Up for sale is my 59cm Roadeo, built by Waterford, with threaded
fork. It is the Maroon colorway shown on the Riv product page
  (or very close to that
color). This frame has mid-fork eyelets installed. As far as I know,
 I am
the third owner. I bought it off a fellow RBWOB lister last winter,
 rode
it over the spring and summer, but it has been stored in the garage
 since
then. I love the bike but I don't foresee as much use as I'd like,
 and
would rather send it on to a new home.

Frame is in good used shape. There are plenty of signs of beausage
on the paint, but no dents or rust. I sprayed it with Boeshield
 before
building it up. It has never been crashed to my knowledge.

Here's Riv's geometry chart with a link to PBH sizing
 recommendations.
   My PBH
is right around 85, and this size worked for me.

 Photos are here.
