[RBW] Re: VO Stem opinion

2022-03-09 Thread Garth
Deepak, I've used the VO adapter and a 130mm +6 degree rise 4 bolt stem
with Albatross bars since 2009 or something. They are what they are, just
the quill part of a stem, a long hunk of forged aluminum with a long bolt
and expanding wedge inside. The flexibility of changing stems while leaving
the bars as-is is priceless. Each style of stem, be it a one or two parts,
work fine. The VO adapter + stem is no more/less stiff than any other
quill, in case you're wondering. I see no advantage of the Nitto
faceplatter over the quill adapter + stem, as I don't weigh parts and a two
part combo looks just fine to me. I do have a 135mm faceplater I bought for
the Susie, but have not assembled it. I may never use it and go with an
adapter + stem instead if either the length isn't right or I don't need
it's height.

[RBW] Re: Tire choice, tubeless vs. tubes

2022-03-09 Thread Nick Payne
I only use tubeless setup on the one bike that I regularly ride several
times each week. On other bikes, which might spend several weeks at a time
hanging up and not being ridden, I don't set them up as tubeless, even if
they have tubeless-compatible tyres and rims, because while the bikes are
not being ridden, the sealant sits in the lowest part of the tyres and
gradually becomes a solid plug at that point. I could pull each bike down a
couple of times a week and rotate the tyres, but it's simpler to keep them
as tubed.

I guess this is only a problem if, like me, you have too many bikes...

[RBW] Re: Tire choice, tubeless vs. tubes

2022-03-09 Thread ascpgh
+1 to NIck's point.

Tubeless is a good choice if you ride often enough or are disciplined
enough to keep your sealant circulated and the tire is an appropriate size.
My trusted LBS feels that 42 is the width that clearly reaches the positive
benefit/detriment balance (that was relative to my conversation regarding
650B wheels).Their feeling comes from combined experiences with
conversions, bike and wheel builds as well as maintenance of customer bikes
with all sorts of tubeless wheels. They sell plenty of mountain and trail
bikes but also stock RH, SON, B&M and Orange Seal products. They're too
small to stock everything so they have already discriminated to inventory.
A nice treat compared to either the brand shop stocking only the mother
ship's product or the P-mart wannabe LBS with every product made on the
shelf. Experience is pointless if not shared.

I heeded their advice with my Baby Shoe Pass bike when building it up. I
had been in the tubed camp before that out of inertia and a lack of
experience. With their encouragement and having read of many listers'
adventures with tubeless, I moved beyond my hesitations. With respect to
their input and my own insight, my 700x40 commuter remains tubed partly
because it's a 90% likelihood it will be dark if I did have a flat and I'm
not interested enough in the tubeless benefits for the Schwalbe Marathon
tires to face the task of using a tube to inflate a failed tubeless tire on
the roadside, at night after a long day at work. Certainly not interested
in arriving to work late, covered in liberated tubeless sealant following
the task.

I think you'll enjoy the newfound lightness and ride of your tubeless
setup.

[RBW] Re: VO Stem opinion

2022-03-09 Thread Johnny Alien
140 is very long. If 80 is only "a little too short" then 120 is probably
more likely to work than 140.

I agree the quill adaptor and stem could give you a lot of flexibility for
trying the different length out.

All of my bikes still have tubes. Tubeless is a solution to a problem that
I do not have - just seems like added maintenance to me. I have changed to
Velo-Plugs instead of rim tape in the last few years though - re-useable
and lighter than cloth rim tape.
Tubeless doesn't sound like the most environmentally sound thing to do
either. What exactly is evaporating into the atmosphere anyway?

[RBW] Re: VO Stem opinion

2022-03-09 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I've successfully used the VO adapter and a variety of threadless faceplate
stems for exactly what you are thinking of doing and would certainly
recommend it. I found a bunch of used stems or take-offs at some local
shops and in the bins at a co-op for about $5 each and have used several of
those to try to find the best lengths on a couple builds.

I cannot directly compare the VO to Nitto quill adapters but I could
directly compare the VO to SOMA and for what you are looking to achieve I
would strongly recommend the VO over the SOMA (unless you REALLY needed the
height of the SOMA which was much taller in quill length.) The VO requires
no top cap and has a one piece quill top with counterbore to accept the
bolt head. The SOMA, on the other hand, uses a separate top cap with a lip
to tighten the quill bolt and wedge after the stem is installed just like
for preload on a full threadless system, meaning in order to swap
threadless stems you are fully removing the quill from the steering column
each and every time to fit a new stem length whereas with the VO you could
leave the quill adapter in place and simply loosen the stem pinch bolts and
faceplate, drop in the new stem, tighten, and go.

One last note that with the VO the bottom lip where the bolt on stem rests
does limit the stack height of the threadless stems... I want to say it was
around 40mm - VO probably lists in the product page and the VO stems of
course fit seamlessly - A Dimension brand stem I have was just a hair
taller with an ever so slight overlap on top compared to the VO. None I've
personally tried were so extreme to place a pinch bolt above the top of
adapter but just something to be aware, especially with some 2 bolt stems
that may have a taller stack.

I cannot answer those questions, I just do not know. I have however benefited
from tubeless on my various mountain bikes for years. And it has saved me from
having to repair a flat on my cold, dark commute. That said, not sure I need it
on this bike. I will mention that Tanglefoot Cycles has said “every touring
bike should be tubeless”, and they are very well known for being
environmentally responsible.

[RBW] Re: VO Stem opinion

2022-03-09 Thread Tom Wyland
I have a generic (eBay direct ship from China) stem adaptor and VO stem on
my Platy. It was intended to be temporary as others noted you can easily
swap out inexpensive stems to find the right length. I'm not happy with
the way the stem adaptor flexes. I also don't care for the look of the fat
stem on top of the skinny adaptor. I'm switching to a VO quill faceplate
stem shortly (delivery today!). I'll let you know how that works out.

[RBW] Re: VO Stem opinion

2022-03-09 Thread Ed Carolipio
I have a VO one and the "tall" NItto one. (There's a short version for less
$$). I think the VO would be good enough for your application since you
want to run Boscos and you don't need to get the handlebars higher. As
Brian Cole points out, the VO one does have a lower lip which limits the
stack height of the stem you can use. I run it with a VO stem that pairs
really well aesthetically with the quill adapter.

Other differences include the place where the stem clamps being knurled on
the Nitto while smooth on the VO. The finish on the VO is "shiny" and looks
great while new but I can't comment on long term durability. The Nitto is
their typical dullbright, bulletproof finish. I don't ride my bikes hard so
I can't tell you which holds their "clamp" better: both have been equally
solid in the months I've owned them for the riding which I do.

Nice work Eric!

Grant made a big mistake saying in the video they were going to price them
at $8. I happily paid $20 for a PAUL bandana and I would have happily paid
$20 for this one. At $8 they are going to sell out fast, and there will be
handwringers who didn't get one, and bellyachers complaining that they were
overpriced at $8, and more whiners when Grant's prophecy comes true and
they appear on eBay with a markup. People! Haha.

1. MKS Sylvan Touring (nearly new)
2. MKS Urban Platform (nearly new, just threaded into crank arms and not

Re: [RBW] Re: Tire choice, tubeless vs. tubes

2022-03-09 Thread Patrick Moore
Goatheads: YES. No goatheads: tubes NO, tubeless probably.

Sealant is wonderful and something you really don't want to avoid if you
live in goathead country, since it lets you ride wonderful light and supple
tires that, without sealant, would get literally a thorn flat every 2-5
miles. As I've repeated endlessly, Orange Seal regular in tubes (Endurance
does not work, but the Regular does not dry into a lump as Stan's did back
circa 2014), and OS Endurance tubeless (does not dry into lumps; dries
instead into a skin on the inside of the casing, tho' if you open up a tire
where the sealant is only half-dried, you'll find sticky strings and
membranes stretching throughout the casing).

BUT!!! Were it not for goatheads, and were I riding in evironments where
flats were rare, say no more than 1 a week for all bikes (yep, that's rare
for me; I'd be happy to fix 1 flat per week), I'd not bother with it for
tubes; easy enough to patch tubes or swap in a spare and patch the flatted
one at home. And, sealant, for all its benefits, is still a hassle and
messy compared to no sealant. For well-designed tubeless tires set up
tubeless on well-designed tubeless rims, like Big Ones on Blunt SS's, I
might still use sealant, and carry plugs for bigger holes, since the
resulting minor hassle and occasional mess is little more annoying than 1
flat per week, and if you can avoid a 250 gram tube, why not? (Esp when
tires are only 450 grams.)

Re: [RBW] Re: Tire choice, tubeless vs. tubes

2022-03-09 Thread Patrick Moore
As for toxic fumes leaked by sealant into the atmosphere, I'd bet a dollar
or more that these are less than the fumes leaked by vulcanizing fluid into
the air when you fix a puncture in your tube.

Thanks to you all for sharing.

Eric: Do you have any color pics that show the corrosion, surface rust and
patina?

Patch: Your experience sounds helpful! I'd love to see some pictures when
you have a chance. Did you ever find a way to maintain some corrosion and
patina? Like letting it weather a bit before adding the clear coat?
Understood regarding the powdery surface rust being an issue. I've
encountered this plenty when looking through old rusted tools.

Here's hoping Jason Fuller has some info to share about his Bombadil,
formerly clear powder-coated, now beautifully painted.

2022-03-09 Thread Eric Marth
Thanks, Bill!

Fortunately, I don't think they'll sell out right away. Let's just say...
they are getting a *lot *of them. Made in the USA by the same people who
make the Hav A Hank paisley bandanas we all know and love.

>From what I understand Grant wanted the pricing to be low because in
certain situations a bandana needs to be disposable or consumable. And at
$20 that could really hurt!

I suggested the fancy bandana makers but Grant said no way, too expensive.
They might have also had a hard time hitting the quantity for the order. I
think getting the price down was a great way to go. That'll ensure we can
all have a small hoard of them.

[RBW] Re: Tire choice, tubeless vs. tubes

2022-03-09 Thread Clark Fitzgerald
I had 2.25 G1 all round tires tubeless- made for a plush, buttery ride. The
55mm Rene Herse knobbies tubeless were similar, but noticeably louder /
more annoying on pavement.

Now I'm on 48mm Rene Herse knobbies with tubes and they are *much* quieter
and more precise handling on pavement than the two above tires.

[RBW] Where We’re At: False Spring to Pre-Spring

2022-03-09 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Who has uplifting photos of their bikes in springtime to share? Bonus
points if your bike is parked in front of a flowering tree. This is the
thing I miss most about Vegas - springtime with cherry blossom trees. Rivs
with flowering trees - we can make this a thing. It would be a welcome
distraction from the sadness in the news.

It’s my first winter in Michigan, and I’m ready for it to be over. I have
looked longingly at my bikes hanging in the garage over January and
February. Now it’s March, and the locals have promised that we get spring 2
weeks into it. We’ve had a 60 degree day that plunged to 28 degrees the
following day. The day after THAT it snowed. Nature is telling lies and
it’s hard on a person, but it is the way of things here. I think we are
somewhere between False Spring and Pre-Spring. Real Spring might be here
late next week.

The snow is mostly melted and the roads are completely clear. There is
green grass popping up and The lakes are thawing and there is much
birdsong. I’ve taken advantage of the days that offer a little sunshine
(though it’s only 30-some degrees) and have been exploring by bike. The
Clem is a wanderer, and the Platys are purpose-driven. You want to move
quickly, you take the Raspberry. You want to run errands, you take the
Mermaid. I’m in love with the whole trio. Here’s what we’ve been up to.
Photos in the next post.

Looking forward to seeing your photos, too.
Leah

2022-03-09 Thread Doug H.
Pam,
I enjoyed the article and you are inspiring in your ability and willingness
to ride most any road. I'm curious about what lights, reflective clothing,
etc. you use to be seen by drivers? I ride on roads often but there are
some that I avoid for fear of being hit or honestly being a nuisance. I
should adopt your attitude that I have a right to be on any road where
bicycles are not specifically forbidden such as interstates.
Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Re: Tire choice, tubeless vs. tubes

2022-03-09 Thread eddietheflay
maybe thread drift but if you have not tried tubeless yet, think twice.
when you do get a puncture that does not seal and whatever hole filler you
use does not fill the hole, and you have to eventually use a tube to
proceed on your ride, that may be the point at which you ask yourself why
you went tubeless. there's nothing quite like dealing with a tire with a
bunch of liquid goo rolling around in it while you try to install a tube.
one of the these messes by the side of the road was the event that made me
love tubes again.

Re: [RBW] Re: Riding everywhwere article

2022-03-09 Thread Patrick Moore
Kudos to Pam.

Doug: I don't ride at night nearly as much as I did when I worked in an
office across town (tho' I just got back from church riding the AM-hub
Matthews with Edeluxe 1), but I expect that as long as you are not on the
busiest commuter arteries, and as long as you are well lit and reflected,
then you are actually more visible to drivers at night than during the day.

I have a dynamo headlight and battery backup, at least 2 led tail lights,
and reflectors, tonight a reflective Sam Browne. As my brother -- dyno
light and 3 blinkies on his messenger bag strap -- and I took residential
roads back to the E/W bike path, 3-4 miles, 3 cars behind us at different
times crept along behind us fearing, or otherwise not wishing, to pass us,
something that hardly ever happens on the same route during the day.

As for a right to be on the road: I used to take that attitude, and
commuted 16 miles each way across town at rush hour, a good part of the way
on major arteries (Central/Rt 66, Montano, Atrisco, Griegos), at night as
well as in daylight. I never had a close call, thank God, but now, 15 years
later (and 15 years older, nigh-67), I prefer to leave the busy roads even
with bike lanes to autos and find side streets.

Patrick "almost car free in ABQ, NM -- 450 miles in 2021 x/c 1200 miles rt
to Ft Worth and back in May in rental; 350 in 2020 -- because I have no
life" Moore
