[RBW] Re: How large of a tire will a Sam Hillborne actually fit

2020-11-08 Thread Nathan F
To repeat what others have said, 48-50 really is the comfortable limit on
my 18'. I'm running 43mm and the SKS fenders are TIGHT, especially on the
rear. I know normally bike brands normally pad the max clearance to prevent
warranty claims, but Riv hasn't on this model. It really can't go much
bigger.

For anyone interested in the max size with fenders, the 44mm Rene

Hillborne perfectly, but I don't think I could go any larger for either
component.

Do you have the canti version? I have side pull, and I don’t think I could do
fenders with Snoqualmie Pass tires. Fenders and Barlow Pass 38 is excellent

[RBW] Looking for 52cm and 59cm Clem H 's

2020-11-08 Thread Coco Menk
Hi there!

On the lookout for some Clem H completes (or frames) for me and my
boyfriend.

We're big Riv fans, and have been scouring the forums and sites looking for
our own ever since coming back from our wanderings in California this past
winter. We visited the shop and did some test rides, but there were so many
options! With no way to ship them back with us (we had our own,
significantly inferior bikes with us to tour on), we left the sunny
seascape Riv-less, but hooked.

The 52 is for me (PBH 84) and the 59 is for him. Hoping for some miracles
in this absurd bike boom.

More bikes for the people!!
Coco

I think I recently read in some form of Rivendell communication or

 the
next several months - starting now. I love this for several reasons.

 1. Rivendell is making money.
 2. People are having New Bike Day.
 3. New Rivendells are arguably the best topic we have on this List.

I think it would be fun to start a thread specific to these new bikes
and see who is getting what. Maybe it’s for you. Maybe it’s a Christmas
gift for your spouse or your kiddo. Today, the dark gold and Rivendell
 blue
Sams were up for grabs. I would love to celebrate with you if you ordered
one and care to mention it here.

I don’t know what number of frames Rivendell started with, but there
were only a handful left on the site a couple of hours ago.
 Congratulations
if you are a proud new owner!

[RBW] Re: How to alter a shimano bar pod to fit a microshift 11 speed shifter

2020-11-08 Thread Matthew Mosen
I'm running a slightly different setup but I figured this might be useful
info. I have a silver2 shifter in a riv thumb shifter mount on my 1x11
Susie. Shifts through the range easily. I would switch that 9 speed shimano
shifter in your photo into friction mode and test if it'll shift through
that 11 speed cassette. My guess is that it will. If you want 11 speed
indexing, that's a different story.

Specifically regarding microshift shifters, some (maybe all?) of there
shifters are physically bigger than the 9 speed shimano shifter in your
photo. So some material would need to be removed from the bar end pod to
simply fit the shifter in there. But this has to do with the physical
dimensions of the shifter, not the shift range.

I guess I need some clarification with one thing related to this topic. Is
there a difference in overall cassette width when comparing, say, a 9 speed
cassette and an 11 speed cassette? Seems to me that any cassette designed
for an HG freehub body would be constrained to the same outer width
(distance from smallest cog to biggest). As my understanding goes, the jump
from 9 speed to 10 or 11 is achieved with a narrower chain and reduced
spacing between adjacent cogs.

Hope this was helpful in some way.

Matt

Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar bags

2020-11-08 Thread S. Greco
Howdy Patrick & Leah
1. The current weight spec is 4kg or ~8.8lbs. It's pretty hard to get
beyond this weight unless you are carrying something very heavy. For
instance, a 32oz water bottle will fill most (not all but most) of this
bag's internal volume, but that bottle + water still only weighs about
~2lbs.
2. There's a bunch of plans for new colors. We're also hoping to do some
formed leather and carbon lids as options in the future. There will likely
be a mini wald-style basket that utilizes the same mount in the near future.
3. I believe the price will remain at $179 - though we are hoping to move
production to the USA and offer the bags in Xpac versus the woven nylon
post-kickstarter.

I don't want to hijack this thread so if you have any questions feel free
to email me.
I will have production samples in the coming weeks and would love to share
some of them with RBWOBers.

I will say that handlebar bags in general have become my favorite way of
carrying things. It wasn't until recently that I became somewhat dependent
on them. I used to always be more of a pannier rider. A few of my rivs do
not have braze-ons on the fork, and this bag has become a really nice way
to add that experience without p-clamps - though nothing against p-clamps :)

[RBW] WTB: albatross bar or similar for upright setup

2020-11-08 Thread Adam Ratcliffe
I'm looking to convert my Surly Midnight Special to a more Rivendell like
upright setup and am interested in Albatross, Billie, or Choco bars. Would
also be interested in suitable brake levers and friction shifters (11spd
compatible).

Cheers

Nice! I'm waiting on mine, and have been stumped looking for rims. How do
you feel about the Rhyno XLs? Those are the 36 hole right? I don't believe
they came in a 32. Would you recommend them over waiting for Velocity
Cliffhangers to come back in stock?

Thanks

The spec is 4kg (8.8ish lbs). I ride mine filled with heavy camera gear and

[RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-08 Thread Will Rose
This is my first post here because I just picked up my new Sam from Riv
yesterday. Just the Frame/Fork, etc., because, unlike some others, I did
not do a good job of scheming and saving, etc. I've been wanting my first
Rivendell for quite some time, admiring them from afar (and close up up
they'd let me), lurking around here. I'm very excited to piece this bike
together from whatever nice parts I have on hand, but I might have to
exercise my patience and planning faculties on the post-purchase end of
things. I'm glad I jumped on it, though, because I'd hate to miss out on
these frames for a while and continue the wanting.

Oh, and mine's blue and a 57.

[RBW] Re: Running a Mark's rack/basket....AND a handlebar bag?!?!?!

2020-11-08 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
No, not ok. that's going to have ill, very ill, or maybe very very very ill
affects on your steering when it's even remotely snug (it could tighten up
at will). You're looking for a failsafe, not something to actually do
anything until it's needed. You might try a fairly loose loop of paracord
or heavy shoelace, just long enough to not catch or bind, but not too long
or it'll get into your brakes and wheel. Tying off to the handlebar is
straightforward because it moves with the rack, headtubes don't so keep it
loose[ish]. And to keep it up and out of the moving bits, consider tying
off to the horizontal top bar of your basket directly in front of the
tombstone, that way it won't want to get fussy with your headset.
Have fun!

2020-11-08 Thread Ben Mihovk
Holy smokes I didn't even think about steering! I've just been tinkering in
the basement and haven't hopped on the bike to try any of these
configurations.

So just to be clear, you think if I do something loosely connecting head
tube to tombstone, it'd work okay as a failsafe?

I appreciate it!

[RBW] Re: Running a Mark's rack/basket....AND a handlebar bag?!?!?!

2020-11-08 Thread Ben Mihovk
Actually...even better, you mentioned the attachment doesn't need to do
anything until it's needed...would there be any issue using the irish strap
to handlebars connection but keeping it loose enough that it just goes
behind the bag? That might be my best move.

I recently set up my Atlantis with a Mark's rack and medium Walk
zip-tied to it. I double strutted the rack and have the Irish strap
connecting the tombstone to the bars (Chocos).

I have an x-small saddle sack that I love and was offered a matching
one at a great price. I love the way the x-small sack looks/fits on my
handlebars, but I'm having some serious issues figuring out how to strap
the tombstone for support while having a handlebar bag.

One solution I might have is to strap the tombstone to the headtube
horizontally. I did it a minute ago and looped the Irish strap a bunch of
times and tightened it up. Is this good enough for supporting the rack if
the tange fails? Will the strap on the frame rub off the paint or
 top/clear
 coat?

Any ideas on how to have both a Mark's rack and x-small handlebar bag
 are welcome.

For what it's worth...I don't plan on ever exceeding the 4 pound
recommendation on the rack. I've used it to carry my 3 pound laptop and
charger (with a Captain Hook), to grab a 3 pound bag of groceries, etc...I
may push it to a six pack of beer, but I have a rear rack and panniers if
 I
 need to carry anything heavy.

 Thanks!

[RBW] Sackville Medium capacity

2020-11-08 Thread Patrick Moore
The usual poor photo, but not for lack of trying. Point is that I am once
again surprised and pleased at the Medium's capacity. I just carried home 3
bottles of a surprisingly good but cheap ($8 on sale) Aregentinian Malbec,
a half-gallon of milk, a quart of vegan mayo, toothpaste, and 2 pint
packages of ready-made salad. I could have easily fit, instead of the
half-gallon, a gallon of milk and a half-gallon of real mayo and had some
room in the main compartment to spare. The side pockets are 1/2 to 3/4
filled with bulky tube with sealant and generous ride kit. (Vegan mayo and
half-gal milk limit because Orthodox Christmas fast begins in a week.)

This easily expands to the full volume, 23 liter of the Camper Longflap,
and the expanded volume is usable, while the Camper Longflap's is far less
so, at least without slow and careful packing. The Camper LF might carry a
bulky jacket inside the expanded flap more easily than strapping it to the
Sackville's loops, but all-in-all, the Sackville is a better, that is more
useful for carrying. Of course, it's a higher-market product, too. Another
perspective: The Medium can carry as much as or even a bit more than a
single Ortlieb Rollerback pannier with neck extended.

And it leaves at least a generous inch of clearance over the 50 mm fenders,
which are themselves generously situated above the 40 mm tires.

The disadvantage of this , at least for my bike, is that they interfere
with and deflect the rear brake cable, so that the rear brake does not
perform as well (it works well enough nonetheless) and that the cable will
eventually wear the contact area (but I daresay only after a long while).

Still and all, once I get my rack, I will as always over 30 years, go back
to panniers.

[RBW] Clem L 59 on a 1Up rack

2020-11-08 Thread 97r...@gmail.com
Clem owners considering a 1Up rack will be happy to know that the rack
accommodates our long wheelbase just fine. My Clem L 59 fits the rack’s
tire rail with a tiny bit of length to spare.

The 1Up is a really interesting rack option, especially for heavy bikes. We
just purchased an e-bike for my wife and it weighs 50 lbs. The 1Up is rated
to handle 50 lbs per bike. Since both of our bikes are step-throughs, I was
looking for a rack that didn’t need to make contact with the frame to
secure the bike. 1Up’s folding retention arms are a great solution and make
it very quick to load/unload the bikes. They also offer an optional fender
cushion which works very well with her bike’s fendered rear wheel..

Be prepared for a wait if you want one. Like all things “bikey” these days,
they are backordered.

Sorry, did not fully answer Andrew's questions. I have Cliffhangers on my
Hubbuhubbuh, which is also new to me, so could not give you a comprehensive
comparison. They are fine, a rounded profile with a flat silver finish and
no eyelets. The Rhynos have eyelets and a more traditional boxy profile,
and are made by the company that puts out the venerable CR-18 rims, always
a solid choice. I imagine they are both good reliable rims. My aesthetics
favor the Rhynos (yes, even in white) but if I had to wait on one and
wanted the wheels I would probably get the other and not worry about it.

Re: [RBW] Re: How to alter a shimano bar pod to fit a microshift 11 speed shifter

2020-11-08 Thread Andrew Turner
Super helpful! Glad to know the Silver2 barends can work as-is with 11
speed, that's news to me. As far as pairing the microshift shifters to
shimano bar ends, they fit just fine, I think the major difference I can
find is that the little flat square "peg" that the shifter fits on are
angled differently between the microshift and shimano pod. I'll experiment
later in the week and let you know what I find.

How's 11 speed friction for you? A lot of people seem to think it's a trim
nightmare but I haven't had the pleasure of debunking that first-hand.

Re: [RBW] 1996 Riv All Rounder update

2020-11-08 Thread Patrick Moore
John, that's lovely. I can't read the tires' labels (generally I hate
over-logo-ing, but I advise RH to make their labels bigger) but are your
tires Naches Passes? Extra lights? I've put almost 200 miles on the Naches
Pass EL's that I installed on my June 2020 Matthews custom to replace the
Elk Passes, and they are wonderful tires; really, even taking into account
1/2 lb additional weight on each wheel compared to the Elk Pass's, they
don't seem to roll any slower.

*If* your tires are indeed the Naches Pass, question: could you get fenders
over the tires and under the brakes on that frame?

Also, what are those cantilever brakes? I am not merely curious; I really
like my Tektro CR 720s with Salmon (Shimano cartridge) aftermarket pads,
but I do get mild front shudder, and I am open to alternatives.

My first Riv road custom was a late 1994-ordered, early 1995-delivered
custom road bike to replace my 1992 XO-1; I told Grant, "Make it better
than the XO-1." He replied, "Oh, it'll be better." And indeed it was,
designed around the original All Rounder but with tightened angles and road
tubing; very nice. The 2 later custom roads improved even on this one, and
my current Chauncey Matthews 26" wheel road bike for AM and fixed gear
drivetrains takes it further, to the apotheosis and ultimate fruition and
summum bonum and Holy Grail of Grant's initial, road-biased development of
that original All Rounder.

Re: [RBW] 1996 Riv All Rounder update

2020-11-08 Thread Patrick Moore
The color is a very nice green that Grant seemed to like in the early
days. My first All Rounder-based 26" wheel road custom was the same
color (one reason why John's AR provokes such a torrent of nostalgic
sentiment). I've since come to prefer Rivendell's later sage green
(which goes perfectly with the cream that, stirred in with this
original green, might well give you that higly preferred sage green),
but this original Riv green does indeed provoke atavistic and
sentimental memories, and it deserve a place on the archival palette.

Sam: Thanks for this update and clarification. Will you please keep the
list updated on developments and progress toward sale to public?

I can't guarantee that I'll be a customer, but of the many bar bags I've
tried, and the many more I've read about, this one is among the most
promising. $180 is a lot of money for a small bag, but I'm at that point in
life where I've defined (mostly) what I want and can afford (often) to pay
for it.

[RBW] Re: Running a Mark's rack/basket....AND a handlebar bag?!?!?!

2020-11-08 Thread spencer robinson
I have a rack, basket and handlebar bag on my Sam. I do not have a strap on
my basket, I do check all the mounting nuts and bolts when I clean and
lube. I always have an Irish or full spectrum strap in the stuff I carry,
then if I find a cool thing or 2 at a yard sale or carry home a 12 pack, I
run the strap over the bag, from the stem, over the bars and to the front
of the rack. Many times the heaviest thing I have in the basket is the
coffee kit and a sweater.

The strap is looped through each side of the tombstone twice...once
through and around the head tube on the opposite side, and then once
 though
the inside of the tombstone and back on the same side of the head tube (if
 that makes sense).

It's snug...but my two concerns are...
 1. it won't stop the rack/basket from crashing into the front wheel if
 the rack fails (I'm not a physics person...but I'm guessing there's more
 holding power vertically than horizontally)
 2. The strap is going to dull up or rub off the paint on the head tube.

HOWEVER...as I was typing this, I found this...

 https://13507435628737481763.googlegroups.com/attach/26c66c05ba4e4/IMG_1683.JPG?part=0.2&view=1&vt=ANaJVrEq-9QnruTkMcmxuNN9WRRDupm4Sh5lxv-I6NA_WVq9zMoW7YG8PJm6dkg0zmWGvc0jPMXrF4yVRs-NP2B3aA4xDxxQ3P78klLrAgHSI79Llf-AOr8

It looks like lashing the tombstone to the head tube has been an option
for at least Soma and their "Manny Strap". I'm guessing I'm okay with it
 the way I have it.

 Right?

Nice comments, thanks. Color official name os golden olive, and that it
is. Little metallic, little pearl sheen to it. Don’t think cream would be
a good contrast.

Tires are older Compass. Think they are equivalent to Natches Pass, 1.8”.
Room for fenders. Tektro 720 cantis. Still dialing in to eliminate the
front squeal, the original owner had given up on that and installed
B-brakes, which I don’t favor. Love the big volume supple tires. Think
this bike can be a true all a rounder, city bike, light and heavy touring,
gravel. Much like the Atlantis.

Original owner gave me paint chips Grant had sent to finalize the color
selection.

cream head tube, and I think it makes it a little foppish.

[RBW] Walking shoes/boots advice, once again after 6+ months

2020-11-08 Thread Patrick Moore
Over 6 months ago I provoked a thread about comfortable and durable
footwear for ~ 5-mile hikes that are also seemly for casual about-town
wear. Many kindly replied, and the upshot was that I set my red and beady
eye on Redwing's Chukka model.

In the event, the proposed trip provoking the question did not materialize.
But in the interval since, while continuing to research "hiking shoes," the
algorithms have called up many ads for "Thursday" boots highlighting the
buzzwords of l"value" and "no-nonsense" and "Goodyear welt" and "durable,"
and the reviews are generally favorable. I am looking particularly at
Thursday's "Captain" model at $199.

After that long run-up: have any of all-y'all *personal *experience with
Thursday products generally or the Captain particularly? I am tempted to
pound the "Add To Cart" button for a personal Xmas present, but of would be
grateful for any available* preliminary guidance.

I welcome *rational and considered comments, even tangential if rational
and considered.

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Silver or Dia Comp Downtube Shifter or pair of Bar End Shifters

Hey Rob,
How much are you looking to get from your bar-ends?

Re: [RBW] 1996 Riv All Rounder update

2020-11-08 Thread Patrick Moore
Aha. Thanks for the clarification. So this means that my current (summer,
2020) road bike may be the culmination of the trend starting with the XOs
and passing through the All Rounder, but diverted toward road/pavement
riding: 26 X 42s with fenders, normal gauge, thinnish-wall 531 frame,
geometry tweaked for best handling on pavement.
