You highlighted the word(s) and then choose black color for the text?

I found, and another member noted, that the reply to author button wasn’t
available to be chosen . That is, it was there, but greyed out. For me,
when I choose it, I got a message saying I didn’t have permissions. I was
signed into the forum.

It would save a great deal of confusion if you specified exactly how you
were accessing the list.  This "private reply" issue are not present if
you view the list with a web browser.

 I was in my iPhone.

I know in the classic mode on iPhone, there is a switch to desktop option to be
able to see reply to author button. In the new mode, I did see the button, but
it was greyed out. I looked around for switch to desktop mode but didn’t see
anything. I was signed into the group.

For now, I’m sticking with the classic. The posting list on the new version
isn’t as useful or give as much information as the classic.

[RBW] Re: 50cm Atlantis. 650b

2020-07-12 Thread Dave Johnston
Last year the 50cm Atlantis was a 26" bike as we discussed earlier, so I'm
not sure how many 650b versions are actually out there in the wild.

The posted geometry pages haven't been updated since 2019 so I'm not even
sure what all has changed.
https://www.rivbike.com/pages/geometry

Otherwise without further info I would expect the 51cm Appaloosa and 50cm
Atlantis to ride very similar, with the Atlantis having one extra cm of
stand over clearance, and 1cm less stack and about the same reach, but it
is quite possible Grant made the 2020 Atlantis and 2021 Appaloosa longer in
the top tube, every year the top tubes and chain-stays seem to get longer.

[RBW] Redwood Rambouillet Atlantis

2020-07-12 Thread bo richardson
Kim is pretty tall. Her Rambouillet is a 66 with custom root beer colored
paint. Her Brothers Atlantis is a 68
and i doubt anyone has ever gotten more pleasure from their first ride on a
bike that fits. However Kim doesnt need to warehouse a second tall Rivendell.
The Redwood really is functionally new with the new drivetrain and top of the
line non moving parts such as bar stem racks etc. It would be a shame for this
bike to go back into storage in an already crowded dark garage...I am 5’6 and
rode the redwood down to Cafe Velow and it rides like a true Rivendell, i.e.
nice.

[RBW] 50cm Atlantis. 650b

2020-07-12 Thread Bill Lindsay
How many 50cm 650b Atlantis’ do you figure have been sold? My guess would be
about 20. What percentage of Rivendell customers frequent the relevant Google
Groups boards? I’d guess probably around 1/50. Maybe less. What percentage of
the US population is within two hours of Springfield Massachusetts? Maybe 1%?

Even if I’m way off and Rivendell has sold 50 of them, lots of people don’t
want to invite strangers to their home and in summer 2020 people are even more
careful about unnecessary contact.

Your hard work on research is admirable but I have no trouble believing you
haven’t found a test fit specimen yet.

Maybe you could convince one of the shops to build one for their sales floor.
You offer to buy a $500 store credit and they build up a new 50cm Atlantis for
the floor. You ride it and if you like it you buy it. If you don’t like it you
use your $500 store credit on other things.

Maybe you could start with finding anyone with an 50cm 650b Atlantis. Maybe
that person is 3 hours away or 5. Maybe once you find that person you’ll find a
way to get on the bike.

That's a great looking build. I recently helped a friend build up a purple
poly, and it is an impressive bike. Easy to build. I'd very much reccommend it
to anyone who wants "Riv-adjacent" aesthetics with disc brakes.

If Riv is going to push for more riders to ride V brakes with drops, dare I
hope we'll see them make or partner with someone on a better drop bar V lever?
The widely available Tektro, which I use, is unpleasant, ugly and cheap. I'd
love to see something like the TRP levers for Vs.

Re: [RBW] 50cm Atlantis. 650b

2020-07-12 Thread Ryan M.
If I remember correctly, the Appaloosa was designed with the Chaco bars in
mind, so more swept back and has a longer top tube length.

I have a 51 cm Appaloosa and have had the Chaco moose bars on it originally and
now have a set of Bullmoose bars on it. The change in riding position was
noticeable between the two bars but neither are bad And both are pleasant. I
changed bars mostly as an experiment and could go back to the chacos in the
future. Anyway, it seems like the Atlantis would be a little more friendly for
drop bars if you were thinking about them...maybe a little shorter reach. Stand
over probably is pretty comparable between the two. I’m personally over drop
bars after having realized I never ride in the drops.

I’m 5’6.5” - 5’ 7” tall depending on how my body feels that day, with a 79pbh
that I have self measured several times. The stand over height of the Appaloosa
does not bother me.

Just some data points. I have owned and ridden a 48c Sam Hillborne, 51cm
Roadeo, 53cm Toyo built Atlantis with 26” wheels, 51cm Appaloosa and now a
51.5cm Frank Jones Sr. They all seemed to fit me fine.

Re: [RBW] 50cm Atlantis. 650b

2020-07-12 Thread Joel Stern
Ryan, I ride with Albatross bars. The TT on the Atlantis 650b 50cm and the
51cm Appaloosa are the same. Given that it would be just a touch easier,
in my mind, to get the bars higher on the Appaloosa but maybe I am wrong.
My standover is a bit more than 80.5. The TT slightly brushed me on the 51
Appaloosa but not in a bad way. The old Riv philosophy was to ride the
largest frame you could to get the bars high and show little TT. With the
ne philosophy of having less frame sizes that seems to have changed. I
like the Appaloosa a lot, I love the orange, just looks very classy.

[RBW] Reading saddle threads, B17, Berthoud Mente

2020-07-12 Thread Joel Stern
I’ve ridden Brooks forever, I had decided to try narrower than my B68 as Oi
rubs my inner thigh and is annoying. So I started reading on my old trusty
B17. Wow, so many models and opinions, now some discontinued. Then I
stumbled onto a few (many) comments and threads on Berthoud saddles.
Looking at their page I see the Mente is closest in size to the B17, the
rest are narrower. But they seem to not be available unless from an eBay
sellers who sell at a very high price. I ride upright, not 90 degrees but
closer than not. I did read some comments on the durability of the leather
which may have been caused by putting Proofide on it. Just wondering if
any members who ride upright have used the saddle and how they like it.
Not sure if this helps but my sitbones seem to ne a out 90mm apart,
+20=110mm.

2020-07-12 Thread Patrick Moore
*One* probably not last remark: The journey to my custom 26" wheel road
frames started with mountain bikes converted to road use, went to a 1992
XO-1, and then to the 3 Riv customs that I asked Grant to make as
improvements on the XO-1. He said of the first, 1995, not as good as 2 and
3, "*Oh, it'll be an improvement."* And it was; and the 1999 and this 2003
are even more so: far better than the XO-1, same clearances, but better
handling by far on pavement and on dirt with 29-32 mm tires.

Oh, well, more remark: 73" sta, 72.5 hta, forget bb drop but designed for
sufficient clearance for 170s with 23 mm tires, tho' the frame has the
usual "sit in it" low-rise confident feeling of Grant's designs.

SOMA Saga is a great bike! Excellent Choice.

That VO Poly Low kicker is intriguing; I like the thru Axles & 1.1/8" steer
tube and its very tempting to sell my Polyvalent & get one of those,
because I virtually have ALL the spare components I need to build it!

But, part of the reason I don't ride my Polyvalent much is shortly after
that I got A Crust Bombora; and I love that bike! (and an Evasion)

The other thing keeping me off the Low kicker is that color: Sage green,
BLAH!!! I would have loved to see them do it in a Matte Black with Orange
accent just like one of the earlier Polys

What do you think of Berthoud vs. Brooks?

I think for me, the Berthoud shapes are better.  Also, the Berthoud
tension adjustment mechanism is superior.  I like the built-in bag loops
on the Berthoud much better than the metal ones (if present) on Brooks
saddles.  Also Berthoud leather is much better than what Brooks is using
these days.

However, regardless of the convenience of the tension adjuster and the
built in bag loops, if the shape doesn't fit you as well as Brooks, then
it's not for you.

Hi Joel,

I have both Brooks and Berthoud saddles and prefer the Berthoud for a leather
saddle. It does appear the Boulder Bikes has a couple of black Mente in stock.

Another option to look at is Rivet. Their saddles are nice as well and they

[RBW] Re: Reading saddle threads, B17, Berthoud Mente

2020-07-12 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Joel,

I've ridden (and still ride) Brooks B-17 and Berthoud Mente and Aspin
saddles. The widths from widest to narrowest is Mente > B-17 > Aspin. My
sit bones are 125mm apart, and which saddle I like best depends on the type
of riding I do on it. For touring, the Mente wins. For general riding I
like the B-17. For faster-paced riding I like the Aspin or B-17.

There's more to it then just width, though. The shapes differ, with the
Berthoud being flatter front to back and the B-17 being slightly dippy in
the middle. How it feels also depends on how upright you ride. You really
need to try them to know, which is always the case with saddles. The only
objective comment I'd make is that with sit bones 35mm narrower than mine,
I'd guess that the Mente would feel too wide for you.

I've tried the lot and like the Berthoud and Rivet saddles best. The Mente
however didn't work for me and I gave it away. I suspect I was not upright
enough. For a wider upright saddle my favorite is the Rivet Imogene. I
found it comfortable out of the box. I got the unslotted allroad model.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rene Herse Fender Install for QB

2020-07-12 Thread somervillebikes
Deacon,

When you say 'try bowing out', I am not sure what you mean. Do you mean
bending the stay so that it is parallel to the face of the dropout? This is
essential for proper stay attachment, it reduces all sorts of stress along
the stay and at the fender.

I did a four-part blog series on metal fender installation. It's a long
read, but if you wanted to skip most of it you could just take a look at
part IV, installing the stays.

[RBW] Riv ripples in the bike world

2020-07-12 Thread Fullylugged
While prepping for a FB live class this week on steering, I happened to look up
the geometry for the 2020 TREK Domane. Here's the latest and newest
development in the race world:
"First and foremost, consider the tire size. The original Domane came with
25mm-wide tires, but the new Domane has 32mm-wide ones as standard equipment,
with Trek’s official blessing for tires up to 38mm-wide front and rear. When
fenders are installed to the neatly hidden mounts, that figure creeps down to a
still-generous 35mm." Hmm, sounds an awful lot like the spec for the 2003
Rambouillet :) Mine came with 32mm rubber and can take up to 1 1/2" too!.
That Grant, such a trailblazer!

Tailwinds,

Bruce

[RBW] FS: random cleanout.

2020-07-12 Thread Drw
Alright 10% off all items. Offers welcome

Bike Friday rear rack- info HERE. Kinda cool, it folds flat for travel, 55lb
weight limit. it's tall enough to fit on a 26" or 650b bike too. i can measure
if you are interested. has some weird connectors attached to it that i assume
are for fenders. lightly used condition. 85$

-Brooks b17 Special- in really good shape, but i seem to be moving away from
brooks. i think its about 3 years old, but has been off of a bike for the
majority of that time. It has received obenaufs once or twice a year. i would
not call it broken in yet. 100$

-IRD Alpina Front Derailleur- 28.6 clamp. for a double or triple. used, but not
abused. 18$

-Dia Compe Long pull Drop bar levers- these are the only drop v levers that
dont break like the tektros do. i think these were on a bike at some point, i
cant remember. very good, almost new condition. 40$

-Chaco Z1-size 10. fit like 10.5, these are the made in usa versions. all
black. a little dusty, but very good shape otherwise. i wore them on one day
hike, i think. 40$
-Herschel packable backpack- super lightweight nylon backpack that wads up
small into its own pocket. olive green and black- 15$

Free items for shipping
-Topeak Explorer rear rack. struts are for a folding bike, so youll either need
to swap them out or cut these to make them work on a normal bike. in nice
condition
-Blackburn mini mtn pump. i like the quality of this thing, but it has a head
that is supposed to work on both types of valves, and its a little finnicky.
-Pletscher pannier rails
-Microshift FD- braze on
-Selle Royal saddle

[RBW] FS: 1 pair of Rat Trap Pass tires & 1 pair of 700x40 Marathon Supreme TLE

2020-07-12 Thread Ian Dickson
RTP: $100 shipped. These have maybe 50 miles on them -- I found them too
bouncy on pavement no matter how I set the pressure. In nice shape, no
flats.
Marathon Supreme: $100 shipped. These have been mounted but never ridden.
Tubeless version.

I prefer USPS, but let me know your preferences for shipping. Thanks!

I was about to say "great, now there will be more normal reach brakes on

friction, it's probably built for electric shifting only with no cable
