The "best tire in the world" are the ones on your bike right now. If anyone doubts this, try riding without any tires ! If you need new tires, the best ones are the ones you get, regardless of how or why. i've used compass babyshoes, switchback hills, and rat trap passes, all in standard and EL casing. now that i only have one bike which consolidates my miles, i prefer hetres as the best value. surprisingly enough, i have the parimoto with gravelking casing on my girlfriends BDB Pelican, and i think they are "close enough". ymmv -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Diff between slick GravelKing and Compass Babyshoe Pass? Looks the same. Described the same.
Lee Legrand very concisely asked: "Huh?" in response to my sarcastic request for the best tires in the world to be cheap. It was a sarcastic comment. Many many people have learned that better tires are better. Many people believe that Compass tires are the best in the world for their given size. Many of those people also complain that Compass tires are expensive. Some ask participants of the Rivendell Bicycle Works Owners Bunch Google Group to explain and justify the pricing of Compass Bicycles Ltd. I think that state of affairs is amusing on many levels and my sarcastic post was an attempt to add more amusement to the comedy. Bill Lindsay El Cerrito, CA Thanks for clarifying. Ha! I hope. Grin. I heard Bill saying something very different. That to rank them diminishes them and the rides on them and himself because they are all inherently different and inherently good for their specific purposes. Can we incorporate a "like" tab on these posts? Bill Lindsay and Mark in Beacon made me laugh today. IME, you just can't beat Compass. It does lead to a dilemma when you have several bikes though, because, yes, they're pricey. But a few years ago I tried the GB ELs and didn't find them to change my riding experience in any noticeable manner, compared to the Riv Jack Browns I had been running. But when I put even the standard casing Compass on the Hilsen for the first time, I was stunned at how great they were. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Diff between slick GravelKing and Compass Babyshoe Pass? Looks the same. Described the same.
I cannot definitively say that any tires I've ridden made me go faster. This is according to the bike computer on familiar routes. But I will say the GB and Compass tires corner better than anything I've ridden, stick good, very stable descents, and ride and handle real nice. My favorite tires. Good flats track record. I also like how they seem to carry their momentum when you start up a hill compared to other tires I've ridden. That means I don't have to downshift until I get further up the hill for a more exhilarating ride experience. But again seems like the clock shows I'm not any faster on any given tire. Anyway I don't use a bike computer anymore. I just use my internal "fun-o-meter" and I also enjoy just tracking how many miles I ride each week with my GPS on my iPhone. Fun-o-meter works way better than a computer! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Jobst ever say why he didn't wear helmet?
Finding Jobst quotes on helmets is hard. One must access a search engine and type in both Jobst and helmet. Here's the money quote: “I avoid helmet discussions because they are a religious belief. There are no realistic tests and all the people I know who crashed with one received severe head injuries as bad as if they had no helmet— usually skull fractures in the face. In contrast, I and my fellow riders have crashed often and not gotten head injuries other than a scrape that drew a bit of blood. As I pointed out, Muhammad Ali's glove has far more cushioning than a bicycle helmet, yet it was possible with a mass far less than a human skull for him to deliver knockout punches, protection against which the bicycle helmet is touted.” With abandon, Patrick On Thursday, October 5, 2017 at 10:06:52 AM UTC-6, lum gim fong wrote: > > > *Please let's not discuss helmet use.* > *I'm Just looking for Jobst quotes.* > > Just wanted to know if he ever discussed this publicly. > > I cannot find any comments by him about it online. > Anyone here read anything he said on this? > > Thanks for any links. > > Let's leave this at just links. As I recall, Jobst did crash, but the brain damage he suffered had nothing to do with the crash itself, but some kind of complication that happened after he got to the hospital. [RBW] Re: PSA -Atlantis
I have been thinking about that question a lot over the last few days, Christopher. In terms of fit, I don't think there's much of a difference between the two. The thing that stands out the most to me is ride quality. The Atlantis seems to do a better job at smoothing out road noise than the Rosco. It feels more stable as well, probably owing to the slightly lower BB and slightly longer chainstays than the Rosco. There's some psychological stuff going on as well when I ride the Atlantis that wasn't the case when I rode the Rosco. I have read over and over about the "magical feel" of the Atlantis, or something like that. And I agree with those assessments-- it is a darn fine riding bicycle. Confirmation bias? Maybe. I guess time will tell. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Good catch! Those are nice bikes. To be honest, I was in contact with the seller because I was originally going to have a coworker pick it up a few weeks back, but then I was schedule to go to MN myself. It kept getting bumped, but now I am supposed to be heading up that way on Tuesday. Long story short, my wife thanks you, or I would have brought that back and possibly sold my 61cm frame. Re: [RBW] Is tube patching a permanent, reliable fix?
I don’t understand the warning so often repeated to avoid glueless patches. I had a rear tube with eight patches, half of which were glueless. The most recent glueless patch had almost 2000 miles, and the oldest glueless had over 4000 miles. The patches all held up just fine until puncture #9 was too close to the edge of an existing repair. Yes, it was hard to dispose of that tube. Maybe glueless patches are indeed “getchahome” repairs for racer types with 120psi. But my experience at 80-85psi has given me confidence that they can also be a long-term repair. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Is tube patching a permanent, reliable fix?
I have never been afraid to patch a front tube. Of course I almost always have flats occur on rear tires. I don't know about others, but I am 52 and am pretty sure I've only flatted a front tire a handful of times ever. Maybe I'm just lucky. I'm sure if I had ever ridden often in goathead country I might have different experience. Re: [RBW] 10x200 mile challenge nearing the end
Towards my preparation for the Marin Mountains 200k, I pre-rode the second half of the course today, which was really fun. The highlights were the Inverness Ridge Trail and Bolinas Ridge Trail and the near perfect weather. It ended up being just a hair over 100 miles, with over 8000 feet of climbing. I'm pretty tired. I don't think I've ever done a solo century before, except doing a few 200k permanents. Strava does monthly distance challenges and a monthly climbing challenges. You can earn "badges" that document your accomplishments. I've been joining those challenges during this time off of work. As a fleeting moment of glory, as of right now, I'm 19th in the United States for climbing in October, out of 11,000 American Strava users who have joined this challenge. That won't last long as I head back to work, but it's fun seeing my name on a leaderboard.
