[RBW] Re: Portland to SF?

2017-08-30 Thread Kevin Lindsey
What exactly is the status of Big Sur? I've been planning to do the SF to
LA ride late next year (circa September 2018), and can't seem to find out
whether the route is projected to be open. Is it currently closed
altogether? Even for bikes?
Many thanks,

The bike goes to the LBS at lunch today to have the IRD roller bearing
headset installed, this is one task that I don't do myself anymore - I
haven't coughed up the money for the proper tools and I don't trust myself
with the hammer and punches anymore. The Nitto 26.8 two bolt seat post is
in the pictures. It will have Bullmoose bars and Tektro cantilevers.

Does anybody know the ERD of the Alex 650b tandem rims? I am going to lace
them to a Nexus 8 speed rear hub and Nexus front dyno hub.

[RBW] FS '97 Longlow 61cm

2017-08-30 Thread Fullylugged
Posting for a friend in Louisiana who needs to sell his bike. Nice guy, double

1997 Rivendell LongLow 61 cm
$2,500
Baton Rouge, LA
It hurts to sell this bike. It is close to my heart. One week before I lost
both legs in an accident I bought this bike off ebay. For the next 7 years my
goal was to ride this bike. In 2013 I rode it across Iowa. Now I must let her
go.
She is a 1997 Rivendell LongLow. 61 cm. Made by Waterford with Richard Sachs
lugs and Reynolds tubing. With my present feet I am 5'11" and step up. I can
straddle the top tube. Grant Petersen loves tall bikes. Campy off road triple
crank, Campy Veloce FD, Shimano Deore RD, Phil Wood hubs, Shimano CX50 Canti
brakes, Nitto S65 seatpost, Brooks B-68 saddle, Nitto stem, Soma Oxford bars,
Tektro brake levers, Silver Shifter bar-ends, Longboard fenders, Nitto rear
rack.
I started riding it regularly in 2013 and rode it on RAGBRAI. Triumph!!!
Unfortunately UPS bent the top tube in shipping. They paid for it to go to
Rivendell for a new top tube and paint job (D&D Cycles). I had the cream fills
put it. Excellent shape. Rivendell Cloisonne Headbadge.
Have friends mad at me for selling, but I must.
The photos with the harlequin bar tape is how "Baby" looks now.

[RBW] Soma Shikoro 700 x 48

2017-08-30 Thread Jay Connolly
To clarify: There IS a difference between the Compass tires and the Shikoros,
but it's not nearly as dramatic as I expected. I love the ride of the Compass
tires and run them on my Sam. The switch gives me a backup set for that bike.
The Shikoros don't have the incredible road feel of the Compass tires, but I
didn't expect them to. At first blush, however, they seem to be a fast-rolling
tire that will suit my needs on this bike very well.

[RBW] Re: Portland to SF?

2017-08-30 Thread dougP
There was a massive landslide just north of Ragged Point that is unlikely
to be resolved with a year. One proposal is to re-route the highway around
the slide which would be a massive project. The bridge that's out is high
priority, and will expedite repair of smaller slides and other work.

Likely that within a year you will be able to at least ride your bike as
far south as Naciemento Ferguson Rd, then take that steep climb up to
Hunter Ligget and pick up a southbound route into Paso Robles. However,
another winter like last one could further impact the highway.

[RBW] Re: OT: Sewing your own bags?

2017-08-30 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Marty,

I have been at it awhile now. My sewing has a long way to go, but I see
it as an ongoing hobby with skills to improve. My suggestion is to start on
simple projects, like stuff sacks, using less expensive materials until you
are confident. Research the materials you plan on using. Some materials
don't need to have binding tape, others need to have their edges melted to
stop fraying (like uncoated nylon) AND have the edges covered with binding
tape. Also, I recommend using only coil zippers. They can 'heal'
themselves.
The funnest thing for me is trying to design something new that is better
than what's out there. For my work and designs, see Dirtdancedesigns on
Instagram. I don't sell anything, just make stuff for myself, my son and
Giant Bicycles enduro racer, Josh Carlson (strapless race bag). I hope my
feed can help you. If you have any questions, feel free.
Beware that this hobby can be a money suck...lol. You make a prototype,
use it for awhile and find ways to improve it. You make another...etc.

[RBW] Re: Soma Shikoro 700 x 48

2017-08-30 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Well this was timely as I planned on ordering Compass tires (48) for my new
Mountain Mixte. I will look into these. I do love the ride of the Compass
tires and am getting pretty set on them but am open to others. Thanks for
the information.

Another good option is the Maxxis Torch 29. It's basically a sized-up BMX
tire and I'm very pleased with them so far. And they have black sidewalls.

[RBW] MAFAC brake DIY light mount article?

2017-08-30 Thread Mitch Browne
A friend of mine will need to mount an Edelux I to the Nitto M12 rack on
his wife's Appaloosa. I know there are manufactured adapters, I have one on
my Atlantis, but there are also DIY alternatives. The latest one being the
very manly chainring adapter showcased in the recent Riv email letter.
There was another, RIV or maybe BQ, that showed how to use an arch from a
dissembled MAFAC type centerpull brake. I searched the archives but can't
find the article and now it's eating me.

Does anyone recall where this article was posted?

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: OT: Sewing your own bags?

2017-08-30 Thread christian poppell
I've made a few bags and a rain cape. Basting tape is invaluable to get
heavier materials to stick together, use bar soap on the needle to keep it
from gumming up. I gathered some info from the ultralight hiking forums. I
have found a few threads on making your own gear and they show the process
with good photos and descriptions. A good quick project would be a saddle
sack type bag. One piece of fabric, sewn and folded and sewn again with a
big long zipper. I usually make scale paper models of the bags I want to
make, then go to full scale and add a seam allowance where needed. This
gives the benefit of knowing how the piece will come together and in what
order, without the time and expense of material. I have also made full
scale items out of muslin before making the final. Again, its cheaper and
gives you experience with process of putting things together before the
final.

Enjoy that new machine!

Even without fenders I would not go any bigger though because with 42 the

[RBW] Soma Shikoro 700 x 48

Hey, Jay

I'm so glad you posted this! I've been thinking about those tires for my
Proto-Joe and almost started a thread the other day to learn more about them.
These seem like a great balance of ride quality/protection. You'll have to
report back on their durability after you've put some miles on them.

I like that dark tan sidewall, but I know it will start looking gnarly quick in
the winter riding here in Portland.

Also, I'm glad to see someone else putting stickers on their Riv!

Thanks!

Well this got me onto the Soma site & they have more options (almost too
many).

The 42 mm Cazadero is now listed as being available in blackwall, and there
is also a 50 mm Cazadero in black. Both price mid-$70s, a bit above the
$60ish of other chubby 700c options. The 50 mm Caz has a listed weight of
570 gr vs 670 for the 48 mm Shikaro.

[RBW] Portland to SF?

2017-08-30 Thread Ian A
I rode the Pacific Coast summer 2009. The hiker/biker sites were supberb. Far
nicer than hotels, I would think (I didn't use hotels at all). October might be
wet though, so I can understand the attraction of a hotel room, but even then
the hiker/biker sites are probably nicer.

I didn't have a copy of "the book", but picked up free maps from the various
tourist offices. I think someone did make me a list of hiker/biker sites which
was great info. If I do the ride again, I'll carry a copy of the book.

I rode solo, but by the time I hit Oregon (came from Canada), I'd started to
meet other cyclists and the evenings were socialble.

I'd really encourage you not to pack too light, but pack for comfort (within
reason). There are a number of climbs and the wind can be a challenge. Although
the route itself isn't too challenging, it can be surprisingly cold on the
coast especially in the rain.

[RBW] Re: Anyone have a sub-25lb. complete Rivendell?

2017-08-30 Thread Fred Craven
In today's lightweight-breakable-plastic world it's easy for people to
forget how light steel can be. Sure, Rivendell bicycles often weigh more,
but they are built to last, and have more stuff attached to them. Back in
the day...(OK, circa 1986) 20 pound steel bikes were available, and 22
pound bikes were readily available, *and* weights always *included* pedals
and seats.

When my custom arrived from Joel (I bought it used from him) I weighed it
without any of it's livery, just the bike with everything needed for
riding...22 lbs for a 56cm. Once loaded and with some heavier tires it's a
bit more, that's true.

My question is, "How much would all these other bike weigh with racks,
water bottles, a pump, tools, a bag or two, a change of cloths?"

[RBW] Soma Shikoro 700 x 48

2017-08-30 Thread Jay Connolly
Tim, this bike is the hauler I'm going to leave on an island where we just
bought a place. We went over on our bikes a couple of weeks ago, and my shiny,
pristine Riv looked WAAA out-of-place among the commenters and tourers.
Stickers will bring it in line with the local approach. Don't think I'll ever
drop a sticker on my Sam, though.

2017-08-30 Thread lconley
I use an automotive drum brake wheel cylinder hone (three stones, not two)
purchased from the local NAPA store. I use an electric drill with a cord at
slow speed, the slowest that will turn the hone. Need to keep at least 3/4 of
the stone height in the tube at the top of the stroke. 30 seconds to one minute
does it on a quality steel frame. A Flying Pigeon takes longer.
Prevents imperfections from scratching up the seat post.

[RBW] New Bike Day--R05C0 8U883 Medium Mountain Mixte

2017-08-30 Thread Bill Lindsay

I picked up my Rosco Bubbe Medium Mountain Mixte frameset today and threw
it right on the stand.

1. grind off the lawyer lips
2. wrap the lift-a-tube
3. install the wheels, saddle and cockpit for an initial mock-up (photo
above)

Then I hung the drivetrain on there. It's going to be a 2x10 contemporary
Shimano setup. The super-weirdo thing I decided to do was BOLT ON wheels.
I've been saying for a while that QR wheels are a historical accident and
none of us really need them. The reason we all run them is that's what
everybody expects. So I put my "money" where my "mouth" is. More to
come

[RBW] Quickbeam over Mt Tam

2017-08-30 Thread christian poppell

Originally titled this as "Adventures in Single Speeding" but I'm not
really sure if single speed counts as I have at least three speeds. They're
just not super accessible while underway. Until I think of another term
I'll call it single speeding. Also, the account is very San Francisco
specific but I've tried to describe it the best that I could.

I was off the bike for about a week while visiting family in Florida. I did
get in a short ride that amounted to 8 miles and about 100' elevation
crossing two bridges. When I got back to California I decided to ride the
Quickbeam to the top of Mt Tam via railroad grade, then take Coast View
down to Muir Beach for a late lunch. From there I could take the headlands
dirt or the paved road depending on how I was feeling.

I got a late start Saturday morning. Ate a bigish breakfast and wrote a few
post cards. Swung through the post office on my way to bart and got stamps
to mail my cards. The BART ride was uneventful and I arrived at Embarcadero
station relatively quickly. I took my normal route through the city along
Embarcadero, branching off at North Point then over the hill to Fort Mason.
I Stopped at the Safeway in the Marina to get some snacks: bananas, bars,
cookie, and some cornbread. When I was leaving a woman with a slight accent
asked me if the way she locked her bicycle looked good to me. I showed her
the Sheldon way of locking (through the rear wheel between the rear
triangle) and we began talking. Her name was Marta and she is from
Barcelona visiting for a week. We talked about politics and other world
events for about two hours. Eventually we parted ways and I headed out
along Crissy field up to the bike path where there were swarms of tourists
on rental bicycles. I saw only one quick altercation where a road cyclist
was chirping at the tourists to get the F out of the way.

After a slow bridge crossing I dipped down in to Sausalito. I had to gently
tell a tourist not to use their phone while riding. It was really dangerous
moving through Sausalito. Lots of inattentive inexperienced riders with
heavy cross winds in the road. I was glad to get out of there.

Fighting a slight headwind, I eventually made it to Mill Valley and on to
Old Railroad Grade. I really wasn’t feeling too great on the ride up. I'm
not sure if it was the week off the bike or lack of food. I felt pretty
gassed. I stopped along the side less than halfway up and ate. After that I
felt a little better, but the whole ride up to West Point inn I had to push
myself. After the inn I was passed by a guy who was either riding an e-MTB
or he was the strongest rider I had ever seen. I’m fairly certain it was
the former but I didn’t see him again to ask. Eventually I got into a
rhythm near the top. I spoke to a guy with a nice Steve Rex road bike with
an older Campagnolo ergo group. Said he had it since the late 90's and
enjoyed it very much. It looked like a great bike.

*Quickbeam at the top of Mt T**amalpais*

Before heading downhill I switched into my freewheel and pumped up my rear
tire a bit to avoid pinch flats. I was cruising down and boosting off some
of the little berms on railroad grade. The last one I hit a little sideways
and almost lost it on the landing. Fun stuff.

Coasted past West Point Inn and down to Pantoll campground. At the
intersection I met a guy named Gary who has ridden in the area for a while.
He was physics professor that was living in China. His son is also in
physics and did his PhD in fluid dynamics. We talked for about an hour or
so about the Bay Area and riding.

*taken from the picnic table, SUPER FUN!*

I made it to the Coast View Trail in a heavy fog and light rain. Coast View
is one of my favorite rides in the area. It's not so steep that you're
constantly braking hard and the trail is a good mix of easy and
semi-technical riding, especially on a road bike with larger tires. I
pushed myself to go a little faster than normal on the trail as I felt that
there weren’t any others using the trail at the later hour (around 6:30pm).
Turns out I was right and I hadn’t seen anyone coming the opposite
direction since I left the top of Mt. Tam. I rattled my teeth out on the
bumpy sections and bunny hopped the water gates. I had a lot of fun and
even said it out loud a few times that the trail was awesome!

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day--R05C0 8U883 Medium Mountain Mixte

2017-08-30 Thread Bill Lindsay
A couple people commented on my red/orange lugged Nitto stem.

I used to have a 56cm Bombadil. I bought it 'off the rack'. It was
powdercoated orange. When I got it, they also got a batch of Bullmoose
bars powdercoated in the same colors, so I managed to get a bullmoose bar
that matched my Bombadil exactly.

Later, as always happens, I decided to set up a drop bar cockpit. I needed
a 9cm stem for the really long TT of the Bombadil. Jay showed me a Tech
DLX and a Nitto lugged stem in standard dullbright, and also showed me a
raw Nitto lugged stem. He said "we'll paint it for you, no extra charge".
I couldn't pass that up, so I chose the raw one. A couple weeks later I
picked it up and it was WAY too yellow. Jay said, "well, that sucks, let
me try again". The second time around it was close, but a little too red.
I just took it, and nobody seemed to notice. When I sold my Bombadil, the
buyer didn't want the not-matching Nitto lugged stem, and it's been sitting
in the bin. I thought about trying to sell it, but what would anyone pay
for a weird red-orange $220 stem? Besides it has sentimental value.

[RBW] Re: 200 miles on 10 bikes, an essentially pointless self-challenge

2017-08-30 Thread Bill Lindsay

I'm pretty sure this should be bike #7 of 10. This is my Gunnar (by
Waterford) custom singlespeed that I have set up as a two-speed. I got the
'doublespeed' started with a 20 mile spin on the Bay Trail. This is the
pedestrian bridge over I-80 at Berkeley. The original owner of this bike
had it custom built to match the geometry of a Samuel Hillborne, so I feel
right at home on it.

I'm 40 miles shy of 1000 for August with one day to go. Tomorrow is
supposed to be scorching hot, so I'm going to endeavor to get it done
early.

Thanks everybody! It's a 64cm. I feel like I could go a size smaller as the

[RBW] Re: Tires/Wheels for new Sam Hillborne

I am looking to get fenders for my Sam. I am running 650bx42 Gran Bois
tires.

I am partial to the hammered Honjo's 650bx58 but have a hard time imagining
they will fit the modern Sam (with the long-reach caliper brakes instead of
the trusty ol' canti's). Has anyone managed to fit the Honjo 650bx58?

Alternatively, I think the VO Zeppelin 52mm Fenders 650b will work. Has
anyone tried it successfully on the modern Sam?

Thanks for your help on this!
