[RBW] Re: Rivet Pearl or C17 Carved

2017-03-08 Thread 'Tony McG' via RBW Owners Bunch

The Rivit Pearl looks intriguing, but I have had too many issues with
leather saddles stretching after 100+ sweaty miles. I have been replacing
my Selle Anatomica Titantico X with Cambium C17 Carved, but it gets
expensive. My Cambium shows no sign of the cracking/splitting that I have
seen on the internet, and the cover material is holding up very well.

[RBW] Re: Remember Good People, Steel is Real!

2017-03-08 Thread ascpgh
Maybe the CFRP frame engineers need to have a chat with the fork engineers.

How unforeseen is that force on a dual-sus trail bike? The fork won. The
frame brand (and material, surprisingly) is the goat of that video the wake
it's leaving, judging by the comments.

I saw a similar force input in a bad landing of a steel MTB, bending the
fork legs forward. Neither the upper nor lower head tube seats of the '86
RockHopper's frame ovalized to caliper dimensions, no uneven material
produced when faced and reamed with the Campy head tube mill.

It was mine and I had attempted to bunny hop a creek rut in a fairly flat,
grassy area and instead of clearing it fully, my back wheel caught the far
side lip and slammed the front wheel down producing a similar force as that
video. Only fail I ever carried home. Lesson learned.

Re: [RBW] Re: Squeaky tire?

2017-03-08 Thread Tim Gavin
Is it your fender flexing and momentarily rubbing the sidewall of the
tire? The Compass tires have a very fine tread that can make funny noises
when something rubs it.

This seems especially likely if you have SKS Chromoplastic fenders. I've
experienced the front fender shimmying side to side after bumps on every
SKS-fendered bike I've ridden. P65's seem the flexiest, exacerbated by the
fat tires underneath.

Re: [RBW] Re: Official Roadini Information

2017-03-08 Thread James Warren

I'm guessing a 62 cm Roadini would not fit like a 62 cm Legolas or Custom. Both
of those latter bikes have a roughly 2 degree upslope of the TT. The brochure
says the Roadini will have the greater TT upslope, saying "a few more degrees."
It also says one's Roadeo size minus 2 or 3 cm would estimate one's Roadini
size because of this.

Also, I have experience with this: 64 or 65 is my size for my non-expanded Rivs
like Atlantis or AHH or Ram. But on the expanded-geometry, 6-degree-upslope
Hillborne I ride a LOT, the 62 size fits me well, and maybe is just a tiny bit
on the big side in a great way. My PBH is 93.

Geometrically, every extra degree of TT upslope adds a out one centimeter of
hight to the place where the TT intersects the head tube.

John, I'm not saying a 62 won't fit, but I would trust the brochure where it
says your 89.5 PBH puts you at the lower end of the range that fits that size.
A 62 in a Roadeo, Custom, or Legolas would be a different story (if 62 Roadeos
existed).

[RBW] Sam Frame on Ebay (need advice)

This has been up for a long time now - seems expensive considering 6 years
12,000 miles and headset/bb not installed, lots of chips...am I wrong to
not pull the trigger? (looking for 58 Sam used)
Also it's 60cm, is that just an old size? Assuming it's 60 relative to the
current 58 and 62 (as in, between the two), and not a different sizing
approach from 2011.

[RBW] Sam Frame on Ebay (need advice)

They used to come in a 60. The size progression was changed to allow fewer
sizes. I have a 56 from back then. The price seems about $200 too high to me.
If I wanted a 58 Sam, I would choose a new 58 over that 60 at $900US. A new
frameset would come with headset bb and seatpost and you'd get a bunch of
Rivdollars.

[RBW] Feb 24th Century Ride on the Sam Hillborne

2017-03-08 Thread Daniel Betancourt
I finished my first Century ride after around 2 months of preparation. I'm
including a few pics of the ride below. I took the day off of work as I
wanted to get the ride in before our trip to New Orleans the following day.

The weather was nice that morning as there was no rain, it wasn't cold, and
the winds laid down for the most part. I got out of the house just before 6
am and decided to hit the bike trail outside of our neighborhood that I've
been preparing on. I'm fortunate that the trail goes 40 miles in one
direction, so I would finish 80% of the ride just by completing one loop.
The ride was uneventful until I got 70 miles in. I ended up with a nasty
upper leg cramp that forced me to take a break for about 30 minutes and I
had to stop periodically the last 30 miles which killed my expected average
speed. I'm not complaining as I was just happy to finish the ride in one
piece. :)

I did get a kick out of seeing the artwork on a section of the trail on the
back of a large section of fences facing the trail. There are some talented
people out there that put some serious time in. The last pic below is a
trail that leads to a stream under a bridge that I've seen kids playing in
the past. They have some rope tied to a tree where they swing into the
water, but as the water levels are low right now I can't imagine it's
getting much use.

This is my longest ride and prior to purchasing this bike, my longest ride
was just over 60 miles. Overall I was happy with how the bike performed.
I'm still getting used to this leather seat and that along with the leg
cramp caused me the most discomfort at the later part of the ride, but to
be fair I remember feeling the same way on my 60-mile ride I took about 7
years ago on my road bike with a gel seat. One nice thing I lacked on this
ride was number wrists/hands. That has for the most part gone away and was
always an issue when riding my road bike.

[RBW] Re: Feb 24th Century Ride on the Sam Hillborne

2017-03-08 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Well done... congratulations!

And your ride goes well with the distance via upright bars versus drops
discussion in another thread. There is absolutely no right or wrong answer
on that one but it is good to see proof positive that upright bars are not
an obstacle. Great looking bike too!

Again, good work and thanks for sharing the ride...

[RBW] Re: Sam Frame on Ebay (need advice)

2017-03-08 Thread Minh
i wont comment on pricing, but make sure you look up the old sizing and
compare to the current. i have one of the orange 56s (which i think is in
the same gen as this) and based on TT i would be on a 58 in the current
sizing. I think this 2011 60 is closer to the current 62.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Frame on Ebay (need advice)

2017-03-08 Thread Jeff Lesperance
FYI - the 60cm Sam that I posted for sale in February is still available -
I can refresh the posting in a bit- I'm offering the frame/fork/headset for
$650 +shipping. I was originally hoping to sell as a complete, but I'm not
using most of the parts to build up another frame. I have the measurements
for the frame, according to an geometry spreadsheet that Riv previously
published - I'll paste the values in below.

Size: 60
BB drop: 78
TT slope: 6
Rear hub space: 135
Standover: 87.6
ST angle: 71.5
HT angle: 72
Rake: 5.2
TT: 61
Front center: 64
Chain stay: 45.5
Max tire: 700x45

I have a few other bits that I can't re-use that I may offer up, including
a wheelset and brakes.

No, lots of kids were doing that, and breaking them. Back in the early
70s, before purpose built BMX bikes existed, a friend had a Schwinn
dealership & sold tons of Stingrays. There were so many frame failures due
to jumping that Schwinn dropped their famous "lifetime frame warranty".
You got the 50/50 warranty: break in half & you get to keep both halves.
It did spur the development of a BMX industry here in SoCal.

I'll second that. Whenever I yearn for a new bike, I can never think of

BTW, Clayton, there's a list member in Canada who often posts photos from

[RBW] Current indexing systems and shifting in general, per the Knothole

2017-03-08 Thread Patrick Moore
1. Road 10 speed derailleurs
 and shifters are
completely incompatible with mountain (dyna sys) 10 speed derailleurs and
shifters. The cable pull by the shifters is different for both front and
rear.

2. Nine speed rear derailleurs will not work with 10 speed mountain

rear
shifters. They will however work with road “flat bar” 10 speed rear
shifters. Dyna speed shifters pull twice as much cable per shift as 9 speed
shifters, so if you use a 9 speed derailleur
 it shifts two gears for
every one push.

3. Dyna sys 10 speed rear derailleurs
 cannot be used with 9
speed shifters. Road 10 speed derailleurs can be used with 9 speed shifters.

4. Nine speed front derailleurs can be used with 10 speed front shifters
,
but do not work optimally if used with a 10 speed crankset
. Nine speed
front derailleurs and
cranksets can be used
with 10 speed chains

 and front shifters
.
A nine speed shifter can be used to shift a 10 speed dyna sys front
derailleur

.

5. 10 speed road chains are different from 10 speed mountain

(dyna
sys) chains. The dyna sys chain is a directional chain that is made to
shift better with 10 speed mountain

 drivetrains .

6. 10 speed road cassettes and 10 speed mountain cassette use the same
sprocket spacing.

[...]

The days of bike riders shopping for new cranks or cassettes or shifters is
mostly gone. Or at least, it's not like it used to be, by a mile. Bike
shops are so desperate (for the most part) that they want their suppliers
to drive customers to their stores with new exciting things every year.

I was not aware, taking just Shimano, of the variety and complexity and
incompatibility of the various indexing systems. Man, it all looks like a
hassle I am very, very happy to avoid.

And the first sentence of the next paragraph seems very strange to me;
nothing is more natural than shopping for new cranks and cassettes and
shifters, in my world. I guess I live in an alternate universe, but one I
like much better. I've just replaced crankset and cassettes and shifters on
the Matthews.

Going from 9 to 10 *was* exciting, as far as these things go -- a very
modest excitement, of course. But it was at least very interesting to learn
that I can shift 10 cogs (and with misaligned ramps, at that, since the
cassette is made from a handful of cogs grabbed from my box, and includes
at least 8s and 9s and 10s, and probably 7s too) with Power Ratchets
pulling a 8 speed era rd. I'd be better off w

With Shimano road 11 they've taken road cassettes to 32T, but for many
with the usual (and often not replaceable with any better gearing) 34/50
that's not a low enough low gear. It was much simpler in 10 speed days:
replace cassette and rear derailleur as noted above and you're good up
to 36T in back. That won't work w

Well, I have saddles that squeak like that so sure, anything with
rubber/plastic why not. You could simply deflate the tire and check the
seating and re-inflate and see if makes any difference.

Re: [RBW] Current indexing systems and shifting in general, per the Knothole

2017-03-08 Thread Patrick Moore
I guess the gaps are getting so narrow that any difference between marques
disappears. But that's a good thing.

What about derailleurs? Are road and mountain bike derailleurs compatible
with the opposite shifters? And what about shifter compatibility between
the different marques?

Frankly, if I were to use indexing, I'd at least seriously consider
wireless electric (I'm tempted to be snide and say, "If you've abdicated
shifting skill to indexing, you might as use electricity," but I won't).
But my last bike with indexing was the Ram, when I had it set up with 7
speed Dura Ace, and I didn't particularly like it. Friction for me.

Patrick "hell, fixed/single for me" Moore, who just had a nice 76" gear
ride on the gofast in breezy but sunny and warm ABQ, NM.

Seriously, if you don't shift so much, you have all the more attention to
give to other aspects of cycling, like cadence strategy -- but don't mind
me, I admit that it's *chacun/ne a son/sa gout/te.*

Re: [RBW] Current indexing systems and shifting in general, per the Knothole

2017-03-08 Thread Patrick Moore
Segueing a lil' bit: there was another thread today on this list or
t'other, where someone attached old video of Eddy one one of the big rides.
Very interesting to see (I guess this was very early '70s) how pedaling had
changed from the days of Coppi and late Bartali. You watch even older video
of C and B on the flats, and they're spinning at very high cadences; Coppi
seemed to prefer the spin-coast, spin-coast, which I also favored 25 years
ago when I could maintain 20-23 in my favorite 64-65" gear. Then they hit
inclines, and they're grinding up in amazingly high gears at very low
cadences.

But Eddy and companions are pushing bigger gears on the flats, and it is
very interesting to see how, at the slightest rise or, perhaps, a turn into
a wind, they get out of the saddle, without downshifting, and torque their
way through the "obstacle." And they stand while in the hooks! (And, btw,
Eddy was a "messy" pedaler; you can't say he had finesse -- all over the
bike!)

I've not watched much Tour video since Big Mig, but I daresay that the
style now is fast spinning and maintaining cadence in all conditions and
terrains.

Agree. With 11 speed, all of the different platforms work with each

It's not quite that simple if you need low gears. The "generic road
bike" these days is carbon, and there's a good chance it has a non-round
seat tube because swoopy sells. So instead of clamp on front
derailleurs we have braze-on style mounting tabs. And in many cases
those mounting tabs are made so that the smallest big chain ring you can
use is a 50T, because the slot is oriented so that you can raise the
front derailleur (to accommodate a 53) but you can't lower it. That
means you're pretty much stuck with a 34/50 compact double.

And if your 34x32 won't cut it, yes you can go to a cassette with a
monster big sprocket, but your road derailleur (no matter what brand)
won't work. You could eke out an extra couple of teeth with a RoadLink
-- basically a "drop bolt for rear derailleurs" that would let your 32T
capable road rear derailleur fit a 34T, but a RoadLink isn't going to
get you to 40 never mind bigger with a 34/50 crank.

*Compatibility:*

 * 10s Cassette Compatibility:
o 11-32: /Not Required (GS medium cage rear derailleur works)///
o 11-34: Single or Double Chainring
o 11-36: Single or Double Chainring (front rings can be no more
   than 14 teeth different e.g. 48-34)
o 11-40: Single or Double Chainring (front rings can be no more
   than 10 teeth different e.g. 46-36)
 o 11-42: Not Supported
 * 11s Cassette Compatibility:
o 11-32: /Not Required (GS medium cage rear derailleur works)/
o 11-36: Single or Double Chainring (front rings can be no more
   than 14 teeth different e.g. 48-34)
o 11-40: Single or Double Chainring (front rings can be no more
   than 10 teeth different e.g. 46-36)
 o 11-42: Not Supported
 o 10-42: Not Supported

Sure, if you could fit a 36/46 you'd be fine, but you were in this fix
in the first place because of the slot in that mounting tab, so no joy
to be found there. Which means you're looking at MTB rear derailleurs
and cable pull altering devices.

For my next bike, I'm planning on going etap "wireless" with mid-cage
RD. I want to run 11-32 in the rear with a sub-compact double like a
46x30 or 46x28. Since I don't "tour" or carry a load, a 30x32 or
28x32 should be more than enough to get me up the hills around here!
Of course, YMMV! Good Luck!

You can help that luck by making sure your frame has a round seat tube
and uses a clamp on front derailleur. Which pretty much means a
titanium frame.

[RBW] Current indexing systems and shifting in general, per the Knothole

2017-03-08 Thread Joe Bernard
The comment about people not buying cranks and shifters anymore struck me
because I realized I'm kinda there now. I used to do a lot of drivetrain
swapping/upgrading, more as part of the "hobby" than for any real hope of
improving functionality. My Appaloosa came from RBW with Sugino cranks, Deore
rear derailer and a rather clunky-looking Claris front. It's not a particularly
cohesive look, not particularly light, and works fine..I feel no inclination to
replace any of it with lighter/shinier stuff like in the old days.

Then there's my ebike with a 1x10 Deore shifter and derailer: Click, click,
click, ride, ride, ride..it's absolutely invisible to me out on the road, which
seems weird. I'm becoming that person who just hops on and rides without giving
much thought to what parts are making it go. I never thought this would happen.

Not EXACTLY related, but the 1995 Rivendell Road (level TT. Not sloped like the

answered, "It's not old. It's just made in a older style.", now IS old. It's 22
years old and has many thousands of miles on it on mostly chip seal and rural
roads. And other than fresh paint a few years ago, everything is still good
just like when Waterford made it. Steel IS real and it does do well for a long
time.

Does your XC-Pro shifter have a pure friction option? I thought they all had a
choice of hard or soft clicks to avoid a click/friction patent Shimano had.

I rode my Sam on 20 miles of trails and fire roads yesterday. Every other bike
I saw was a suspended mountain bike. I was totally comfortable the entire time.
I also ride it almost every day around town. It is my bike for everything but
touring, and I've even considered that it would probably work for that fine
too. My wife bought herself an older orange canti Sam (first bike i didn't
force upon her), and she likes hers a lot too.
Disclaimer: I don't care about going really fast.

Yeah! Mine has noodles on a 8 or 9 cm stem. I had mustache bars, albatross
bars, map/ahearne bars and now the noodles, which I like best.
Mustache was fine in retrospect. Albatross felt a little too upright and
cramped for me. Map bars were comfortable but I could only really use one
position. My wife won't ride drops and has hers with albatross bars.

Evel Knievel made regular appearances on ABC's Wide World of Sports in the
'70s, jumping an ever increasing number of cars with his Harley XR750. All us
kids jumped out bikes back then, and snapped them in half regularly.

One evening I stumbled into an alley and some dude had actually built ramps big
enough to get him over two cars on his Sting-Ray. He had a giant front sprocket
and got himself up a good head of steam and sailed right over those cars. And
the landing ramp. He bounced into a telephone pole on the edge of the alley and
broke his arm. That was a strange night...

On my wife's carbon BH Quartz, which uses a braze-on tab, an Ultegra
Braze-on front derailleur was able to be positioned low enough to be in the
correct position when using a crank with 44/30 chainrings:

For 11-speed road shifters combined with wide range cassettes, use SRAM -
their 10-speed MTB derailleurs use the same cable pull as their 11-speed
road shifters. Here's the drivetrain on one of my bikes that uses Force 22
road shifters, 42/29 chainrings, SRAM X9 MTB RD, and Shimano 11-40 11s
cassette. SRAM publish a list of their "exact actuation" components at
https://www.sram.com/sram/mountain/technologies/exact-actuation. All
components on that list are compatible - just match the shifters to the
number of cogs on the cassette.

I've never found any problem on two chainring setups with mixing different
manufacturers front derailleurs and shifters. I have Campagnolo shifters
with Shimano FD, Shimano shifters with Campagnolo FD, and SRAM shifters
with Shimano FD.

Another combination that works perfectly is Campagnolo 11s shifters with
Shimano 9s cassette and Shimano 9s RD, as the cable pull is virtually
identical between Shimano 9s and Campag 11s. When my old pair of Ultegra 9s
STI shifters started to fail several years ago, I found I could buy a pair
of new Chorus 11s Ergo shifters as cheaply as the prices being asked for
NOS Ultegra 6500 shifters, so I went that route.

I've had one since the first year they made them (2009?) and I still love it.
It's been my commuter, errand runner, day ride, and trail bike. I've toured on
it a bunch too (about 20 days total) and it was great for that. I've always had
upright bars. It really is a great and versitile bike.

Or a Calfee. Which, come to think of it, Brewster already owns.

I have had no problems mixing SRAM road and mountain 10 speed derailleurs
and shifters with 44/28 and 42/26 cranks and 11/32 or 12/28 cassettes.
Even on my Calfee, now sadly sold.
