[RBW] WTT: My 60cm Rambouillet for your 62cm Rambouillet

2015-09-13 Thread rw1911
Is your Ram just a little too big? Would you be interested in trading your
62 for a 60? I could do complete or just the frame set. Email me and we
can discuss.

[RBW] Re: FYI: Saluki on Ebay

2015-09-13 Thread islaysteve
Thanks so much to the folks here who alerted us the Bike Index! I wasn't
aware of the merging of the two services and I have just finished
registering all of my family's bikes. It would be so awesome if this
Saluki is returned to the owner with the help of this group, I hope that we
will get an update. As an aside, I can't believe that some owners don't
record their serial numbers, let alone register them locally or nationally.
I sent mine in to Riv when they were offering a registration service a
while back, but I don't know if that is being maintained; haven't heard
anything about it. I tried to register my Bleriot on the old Bleriot
datebase, but it appears that it is now defunct. My frame is on there, but
registered under the previous owner's name.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for helmet/head rain covers?

2015-09-13 Thread Doug Williams
I don't like hoods that block my vision when I'm trying to scan behind me.
I haven't tried it, but I think the Grundens rain hat would not block your
vision.

If you wear a helmet (and maybe you want to if you are mixing it up with
SUV's in the rain) I like this one:

https://www.taigaworks.ca/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=66

It fits over you helmet, doesn't block you vision, and even has a loop to
attach your red light. I attach my take-a-look mirror to my helmet and the
taiga doesn't interfere with it. I don't always bike with a helmet, mirror,
and red light on my head. But if it is dark and rainy in heavy traffic...it
is time to pull out all the stops.

Doug, a properly fitting/adjusted mountaineering hood moves with the head,
allowing vision when turning my head to look behind. A poorly fitting or
adjusted one does block exactly as you describe.

[RBW] 2 things: 1: ISO/WTT for fixed gear lockring; 2: How to fix wood chain guard?

2015-09-13 Thread Surlyprof
I wouldn't use gorilla glue or pressure unless the crack was caused by being
hit. Gorilla glue depends on moisture on one side of the wood and dry on the
other. You don't have that access to your gluing surface. Plus, gorilla glue
(or any polyurethane glue) foams up and makes a mess and turns your fingers
black for a week or so. If it is from a hit, I'd use titebond 3 and clamp
lightly.

If the crack just appeared, it may be a natural occurrence and might be
destined to recrack (maybe in a new spot) if glued with pressure. Wood's an
organic material susceptible to changes in humidity so it can crack (called
checking in woodworking) as it expands and contracts and tries to find a
neutral balance. Whenever I have a board that checks, I work super glue into
the crack using paper or foil to work it into the crack, particularly the ends.
Then, quickly wipe up any excess very well with a rag or 600 grit sandpaper.
That should stabilize the wood to stop further cracking. If you have access to
the backside of the crack, you can use gap-filling super glue or epoxy and then
use a vacuum hose to suck the glue into the crack.

If you don't like seeing the crack, you can blend it in with wood putty after
it is glued. You may want to experiment with color. A darker color may look
more like part of the woodgrain.

Thanks for the glue tips. I may do that -- I do have some good wood glue.
But then again, I may just install the TA crank with a 50 t ring since I

I can use the stock spindle, but I have a Phil 113 lying around.

Your other Riv's are single/fixed, correct? If so, chainline should be the
same I believe for 120/126/130, with 126 & 130 having more spacers on the
axle. I think it's 135mm specific SS hubs that may require a different
chainline.

2015-09-13 Thread Peter Adler
Specialites T.A.'s 1973 and 1983 catalogs list the ref:314 (ISO) track
spindle as 111.5mm.

TA 1973 Catalog

TA 1983 Catalog

Phil's 113 is JIS, right? If that's the case, it would be the equivalent of
an ISO 117.5mm, roughly TA's length for a Pro V double. If you're going to
attempt track-ish chainline with Pro V+JIS spindle, you're looking for
something in the 107-109mm range.

[RBW] Re: 2 things: 1: ISO/WTT for fixed gear lockring; 2: How to fix wood chain guard?

2015-09-13 Thread johnboy
I would strip any finish off the back side and lay a layer of glass or
(heavens forbid ) carbon fiber cloth into epoxy. West GFlex is strong and
allows some working time, 5 minute is usually a bit thick and obviously has
short working time. squeegee the epoxy into the cloth and get good contact
with wood. Then clamp the guard to a piece of plywood covered with packing
tape ( acts to keep epoxy from sticking to ply) The idea is to press the
epoxy saturated cloth to the wood and get a smooth surface on the chain
side of the guard. Let cure over night and unclamp . Sand , file as needed
to clean up. Be careful when clamping that the cloth does not slime out of
position and don't over clamp. Also warming the epoxy will make it saturate
the cloth easier. Good luck, John

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam Riding Charactertics

2015-09-13 Thread cyclotourist
If you have the line on a used one, get it!

They ride wonderfully. My favorite bike. The gear changing procedure is a
breeze, although I think most QB owners end up keeping it in a single ratio
most the time. Very versatile. Able to haul things around town, meander
through the country, hit the local trails.

Really, if you have the opportunity, take it. I think you'll love the bike,
and if not, you can re-sell and not lose any money. QBs don't depreciate.
May actually be one of the few bike to actually appreciate a bit.

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam Riding Charactertics

2015-09-13 Thread Patrick Moore
How does the QB handle on pavement compared to the Ram, or to the Roadeo?
On dirt compared to a good NORBA rigid MTB?

When I first took the '03 out on dirt this morning it felt, in comparison
to the Fargo, too "upright" in the front -- the front end seemed too ready
to "plow" in sandy spots; and this not merely because of the 28.5 mm, 55
psi tire.

But after 10 miles on this dirt, it started to feel much more natural.
Chauncey is, God willing, making me a split between the F and the '03:
slightly slacker in front than a road bike is.

[RBW] Quickbeam Riding Charactertics

2015-09-13 Thread Pondero
I agree with both David and Esteban. To me it feels light, neutral, with a
subtle spring in its step that is versatile, delightful, and hard to describe.
I enjoy telling people that Quickbeams are magic. I usually ride mine fixed
and have that whole connected-to-bike-and-terrain thing going on. This spring,
however, I put a three speed IGH on it and did a short fully loaded tour...and
it performed admirably. Reluctantly, I'm selling my Atlantis, but I can't
imagine parting with my Quickbeam.

[RBW] FS: 60CM Cheviot Frame $675

2015-09-13 Thread Mike OShea
FS: 60CM Cheviot Frame $675.00
I'm selling my 60 cm orange Cheviot frame/fork/headset/BB. Frame is too
large for my wife. The frame was purchased new from Rivendell on 6/15.
There is less than 200 miles on frame. The frame is blemished. According to
Keven at Rivendell, "The middle (mite) seat stay was brazed too far inboard
making it possible for the chain to tap on it when you are riding the
largest front chain ring and smallest rear cog. We removed enough material
to prevent that from happening. It doesn't have any effect on the overall
integrity or longevity of the frame. It's purely aesthetic and hardly
visible".
I tried to touch up with nail polish but my color match is not very good. I
try to show it in the photos. The frame has a few chips at wheel dropouts
and rack braze-ons. Again I try to show this in the pictures. No dings or
dents. Overall excellent condition. $675.00 plus $50.00 shipping (Bike
Flights) Continental US. Paypal preferred. Please contact off list. Thanks,
Mike

As you will see those of us that have kept a qb or s1 will echo the same thing,

I can't guarantee that you will get it, but if you do its a really great bike.

I have a hillborne that is nearly identical in dimensions but there is

Get it. My QB is my favorite.

I've ridden it on road, off-road, commuting, 40 miles at a whack... It's just
great. Mostly fixed, but I've experimented with freewheels and internal hubs

Absolutely agreejust got off mine a few minutes ago after running 10
miles of errands around town. I "graduated" to single-ratio after a year or
two, though I'm glad I still have the option "just in case."

I also own a Hunq, which I love (and may even ride more because of the
setup - shopping, camping, etc), but every time I get on the QB I wonder
why I wasn't riding it the day before as well.

I've ridden in on good pavement, bad pavement, and the equivalent of fire
roads, though no single track, and about the only change I tend to make is
air pressure in the tires.

If you can get a QB get it. As other's have said, you won't lose money on
it.

Mine is just about due for a cockpit change. I've gone from original
mustaches to albas and now? Hmmm...still thinking it over but as I have to
change the cork grips and it looks like time for a recabling, I may as well
go all in.

Bob

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam Riding Charactertics

2015-09-13 Thread Deacon Patrick
I'm at a keyboard and can respond more fully now. Mine is my country bike,
with my Hunqapillar as my trail and bikepacking bike. There is a
contemplative flow to the single speed, and I suspect more specifically to
the Quickbeam due to Grant's gifts of design, that makes every ride on it a
dream of soaring delight. I live in the Colorado mountains and would never
have considered a single speed for this area, but with the gearing I have,
I happy take on any road ride and many trails too. Naturally, I ride trails
differently with the QB than the Hunqapillar and both are a blast, but the
QB is underbiking at it's glorious best on trails. If something is too
steep for my to ride up, I always have LCG (lowest common gear) with me and
hoof it to the top. Grin.

I will voice my minority opinion that my QB is not the last bike I would
sell. That would be my Hunqapillar as I bikepack too much. There are,
however, many other things I would sell before letting go my beloved QB.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Racks for the Clem

2015-09-13 Thread Wayne Naha
Hello folks,
I am contemplating some racks for my upcoming Clem, and I'd love to get
recommendations for some economic, hard working front and rear racks. Up
until now, my sights were set on the Pletscher rack from Riv. But after
some looking around, this one from Velo Orange caught my eye: Dajia
Cycleworks Stainless Steel Rear Expedition Rack
.

Anyone ever use this? Only $20 more than the Pletscher, and stainless
steel to boot! Alas, there is no matching front rack, but the VO
Constructeur Front Rack

 seems
nice. I really like the VO Porteur Rack
,

but it is a little pricey. Also, given that the Clem has (I am assuming
here) a mid-to-high trail fork, is it practical to put so much load on the
front? Does "low trail = big front load" imply "high trail = mostly rear
load"? I would be using this mainly for errand running and grocery
getting. No long tours planned, but the racks should be applicable for
that as well. Has anyone else considered how best to rack and load the
Clem or Clementine? I'd love to hear thoughts, suggestions, etc. Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam Riding Charactertics

I recently sold my SimpleOne.

I truly, deeply, honestly loved that bike. For a few reasons, related to
wheel size (I don't like the feeling of fat 35+ tires on 700c) and wedding
funds, I have made peace with the sale. Will I create a SingleSpeed bike
from a 650b Riv in the future? Cheviot? My Saluki? Yes, almost definitely.
I think that Grant's designs make beautiful "set it and forget it" bikes
that a SS/Fixed setup embodies.

Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Riding Charactertics

2015-09-13 Thread Eunice Chang
I have 2 riv's- AHH and QB. I love them both, but I purposefully built QB
to be a bit different from AHH (less racks, thinner tires, lighter). QB is
my bike of choice for longer commutes/rides that don't require me to carry
anything. What everyone says is true- there's something about QB that is
pure magic. I don't know how to describe it - it's more of a feeling and a
state of being. it might just have been the right time, but QB was the bike
that really, really helped me be more confident about biking, especially in
traffic. It's incredibly stable, handles well, and manages to distinguish
itself from other bikes, while at the same time seamlessly becoming an
indispensable part of you.

I think the only time I'll ever sell a QB is if I really can't ride it
anymore. That will be a very sad day.

[RBW] Indian Head Century in Indian Head, MD

2015-09-13 Thread Lungimsam
I signed up for the 100. But we got there late and were concerned about not
making the rest stops, so we just did the 70 mile route.

*The weather and clothes:*
The weather was about 70's-90's. Hot and humid. Bright blue skies with some
clouds made for a beautiful day. I wore a
jackpot-found-for-less-than-4$-at-a-Goodwill Ibex wool t-shirt, and wool
3/4 tights that I scored on clearance on Ibex site last winter. I've had
the shirt for a couple years now and it is getting some small holes in it.
My wife fingernail polished them or something like that to keep them from
getting any bigger. Nike sneakers. Cotton socks. Summer Gloves. Helmet made
in 2009, I think.

*The Ride:*
The 70 route is the same route as the 100, but eliminates a thirty mile
loop that splits off the 70 course. I hopefully will do the 100 next year.
Run by the Oxon Hill Bike club. The full 100 has ~3240 feet
climbing/elevation? Not sure what the diff in those terms means, or if they
are the same.
A handful of short-ish, steep hills. The rest of the ride was gently
rolling southern Maryland country road and shouldered country highway
terrain. Beautiful.
The last rest stop is at mile 89 mark on the century map, I guess 59 on the
70 route. If you make it to there, you can recovery spin the last almost
totally flat miles to the finish if you are tired. At least on the 70 route
you could. There was a beautiful new looking MUP for about 5 miles at the
end that was flat and wide. As soon as you pop out at the end of it you are
about .2 miles from the end.
Traffic was light and the car drivers were friendly, even one slowing to
ask me about the event. This is probably a good step up into a century with
some hills if you are used to flat centuries and don't want anything too
hard, but want to try a century that isn't flat. I would guess that upwards
of 1000 people were there. When I was at one of the latter rest stops they
said they counted about 575 people who came through so far.

I am so glad that this century is offered. And only $30 to register and
close to home!!!
More info about the ride here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/70237737@N00/albums/72157658179109169
I think Palinscar and Joan from this forum are involved in this ride or
have been in the past. I saw a woman at the finish picnic who looked like
she could have been Joan (from pics I have seen on this forum of her) but
wasn't sure and I was too shy to ask.
Starts at a beautiful park with plenty of parking and the walk up tables to
get wrist bands (no numbers for riders) were lickity split fast and very
friendly service.

*The bikes:*
I saw no Rivendells that I was aware of Bummer. But I did see some
other lugged steel. One was Japanese. Started with an H. "Hiroki"?!?! It
was pink.
No Palinscars or Joans that I met along the way.
I saw more titanium than ever I am aware of seeing on an organized ride.
Moots, and Sevens, and Litespeeds.
Maybe one recumbent?
No banana bikes.
Lotsa alu/carbon
One guy was on a gigantic bright blue cruiser bike. I think there were
tassels hanging from the grips.
I think I may have seen one tandem.
I was on my 53 Bleriot.

*The pictures:*
Just a few. I'll post a video clip later.

[RBW] Quickbeam Riding Charactertics

2015-09-13 Thread Bill Gibson
I have a green Quickbeam, and like it a lot. I use it for everything, city,
pavement, gravel, stationary trainer ( I am surviving Phoenix metro.) I
consider it a very sturdy, stiff bike, suited to my overweight condition
(210 lbs), and loaded riding (full groceries, camping), with very stable,
not sprightly handling. No shimmy. I used to tour on a light sports-touring
frame (a Falcon made Eddy Merckyx branded bike, completely
mongrelized) which did not shimmy, but would wobble when climbing, and it
did plane. The Quickbeam does not wobble or plane, either. I think it would
plane, if I were stronger. It carries a moderate load in the Hobo handlebar
bag, which I use often, better than many bikes, and I have a Hoss
saddlebag, both on Nitto racks, which is well loaded when not on the
trainer. I mounted Berthoud fenders, which limits tire and gear choice, but
when I use it as a singlespeed I just ride. I also built a wheel with a
SRAM I9 hub, which eliminates any regrets about riding a single speed, or a
two speed etc. I don't care about internal hub friction loss most off the
time, but am amazed at how light my other bike, the 1970s Gitane 531db
bike, without fenders, or pack racks, which my father passed on to me, and
which I restored, is, but it is very flat in the Phoenix metro area, so,
light isn't important. You must seek out hills and wind to need gears here.
I think someday, for three or four time as much cash as my Quickbeam cost,
I might get a front loading, more flexible, sportier randonneur framed
bike, say, from Jeff Lyons, or Boulder Bicycle, but it isn't a necessity. I
am set for life. I do wonder if I might improve the brakes, though. MAFAC
has alway been my gold standard, and I have always been able to fix
squeals. I will see if I can retrofit something someday.

[RBW] Mount Laguna s24o

2015-09-13 Thread hsmitham
This happened in the Southland over the 9/11 weekend.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pedalpusher61/albums/72157656255990733

It was cooler than at the coast with wide open vistas and superb dbl &
single track and the company wasn't bad either.

Blessings to the 9/11 victims and their families.

Tail Winds,

~Hugh
