How short do you want to go? I have a gorgeous 160mm Suntour Sprint crank
that I don't think I'm ever going to use. 130 BCD double, and I probably
can find rings for it, too. Gimme a holler if you think you can use it, the
price will be reasonable.

2015-06-04 Thread Elisabeth Sherwood
Really -- a flashmob isn't necessary! BIcycleSpace folks are more than
familiar with Rivendells (and all things BoBish). Ed mentioning the topic
to Erik will be enough to put the possibility on his radar.

(Feel free to join the shop on any of their weekend group rides on your
Riv, if you're so inclined.)

Congratulations, Keith, on the upcoming new addition! (And, looking forward
to seeing what the Hunq looks like in person sometime in the future.) Will
be interesting to see how Riv responds to your query.

Cheers,

Here's a set for $45. I have no idea what the quality is and it doesn't
say if it's a double or a triple:

https://www.benscycle.com/p-893-origin-8-andel-110bcd-crankarms-165mm-silver.aspx?

If your current rings are in need of a good cleaning then it's not that
much more work. On the other hand, if your current set is in good
condition, you could buy new and resell the used for not too much out of
pocket.

Good to hear from you,
Michael

[RBW] Re: Local Rivendell Dealer suggestions for DELMARVA area?

2015-06-04 Thread Alan Pickett
Ok, first, Ed, I just watched the video of you and Mary
(http://www.bicyclespacedc.com/our-blog/2014/11/15/ed-and-mary) and, OMG!!
THAT IS THE CUTEST, MOST ADORABLE damn thing I have ever seen!!! And there
you are, on a Rivendell! In a Bicycle Space video!!! That is super sweet on
all counts.

When I read local blogs here and peek at local shops, and now see the
responses to this post from people who are clearly plugged-in to the scene
here, I see DC as an already enlightened cycling community. There is a very
wide continuum of riders here, from super-athletes to Frankenbike welders,
and I think there is a more than concentrated number of Riv-minded riders,
people who may not or may only remotely know of Rivendell bikes, but have
independently embraced many of the philosophical values shared by ROB
members. It's parallel evolution.

People like Ed and Mary (Ed please correct me if i mis-state) seem to
actively promote a bike-positive lifestyle in the DC area that appeals to a
lot of different kinds of riders, but ultimately, when I read Mary's blog,
she is sharing STORIES about her love of cycling as a "vehicle" for
personal discovery, the experience of beauty, and social pleasure and
enrichment. That, in my opinion, is RIVISH TO THE CORE.

Riv's "request" for help is so feeble and unenthusiastic sounding, that I
wonder if they mean it, and if Grant is just burned out or demoralized at
the thought of having to "whore himself out" to sell bikes, and I worry
that he may be mistaken. Look at the video above, and just try and tell me
that a "Just Ride" revolution has yet to come to DC. Riv did a pop-up
before they opened the retail shop, right? Keith's Bicycle Pro shop is on M
St. in Georgetown, Washington DC, and he's interested? That's the frigging
5th Avenue of this town. Uppity people with serious bank promenade up and
down that street all day and night. If you want to sell a few pretty
looking bikes, I don't think you could ask for a better shot. Bicycle Space
is a thriving business, opening up three shops in DC and using all of the
groovy tools of modern technology to create a true community of local
customers that feels a bit like a family, and they sell Grip Kings and
bikes with Kickstands. No revolution needed, the eagle has already landed.

The more I think about it, I like the idea of Riv doing a 5 - city pop-up
tour. They already did a cool one in walnut creek. Local supporters and
lover's of Riv could help out on the ground (I would think that some would
even let a couple of Riv staff members crash on a floor, or shine up our
own bikes for display or test rides to lower costs of trucking a ton of
equipment) and local bike shops sound like they would gladly involve
themselves, because they already "get it". They don't need conversion or a
sales pitch, and they already have developed their own successful ways of
communicating with their customers in a meaningful way. Maybe the details
of something resembling a dealership relationship are just not workable,
(and hell, maybe that's actually ok - Riv's individual success is more akin
to "slow food" than a KFC franchise...). I am convinced that a 2 week
pop-up in Union Market, Bicycle Pro, or Bicycle Space, done in Rivish
fashion as a social experience would be first and foremost FUN. It would
only add to the already thriving community of like minded riders, and could
result in furthering the "Just Ride" revolution that is already well in
play here.

That's it. I think I'm done with this. If people like Keith and Ed are
already in our community and our friends, and Riv is serious about this
idea, then I don't what more can be done. If anything begins to "Pop-up", I
would commit to being part of the pop-up-planning process!

ps, Liz: I see you are right, I didn't know the Bicycle Space near
Judiciary square was interim, and am also really glad to see them
developing so wonderfully into the cycling community in dc. Ivy City?
That's cool!

2015-06-04 Thread Takashi
Awesome pictures, Mark!
Agreed about #4. Cold & miserable rides are usually the most memorable ones.

Cecily, your photos make me happy.
Too bad that you can't ride now. I hope that you get well soon and post
your photos again.

I can't decide which ride is better than other, so I will just post a
picture that I think is most beautiful.

[RBW] Re: how do you carry your loaded bike?

2015-06-04 Thread Leslie
So, I used to head from the workshop/basement out through the garage w/o
having to take the steps; and the others' bikes are hanging in the garage
anyway, so when we're going out through the garage to get theirs, there
aren't stairs involved.

But a lot of the time, I'm riding solo w/o the others, and I'd left the
water-bottles in the kitchen, and my helmet in the hall, so... I end up
taking the bike up the stairs and out the front door. Or I arrive home,
garage door is closed and I don't have an opener w/ me, so the bike comes
in the front door and gets parked in the hall for a bit... at that point,
I'm taking it down the stairs instead of out and around to the garage
door so, yeah, I end up taking the bike up and down the stairs more
often than I thought I ever would.

But with the way the stairs are narrow (well, maybe not 'narrow', but,
certainly not wide, and, they're not 'open', you have walls on both sides),
and with the way the overhead ceiling is at the bottom landing, I really
couldn't shoulder a bike or carry it. SO, I simply stand near the back
wheel (behind the cranks, so I don't catch a pedal w/ my shin), hands on
the handlebar, and roll it up, or down, the stairs

I like the idea of the grab-handle at the bottle cages, but, I don't have a
handle there, and I manage it as-is, so yeah, I just roll it

money😂 Patrik, you know I'm kidding. You're an inspiration to many on this
list. I've mentioned my double knee replacement in 2010. The rehab was not fun,
that's for sure, but it was completely worth it. Any time you're feeling low,

2015-06-04 Thread Montclair BobbyB
If the stairs ain't too steep... I give a tug on my chinstrap, sit way back
behind the saddle on top of my Carradice, grab both brakes and gently thump
down a stair at a time... :)

... but usually I do the seat tube grab method... to me that just feels
like the most central place to grab and hoist.

[RBW] Re: how do you carry your loaded bike?

2015-06-04 Thread John
I really like the look of those leather straps. Do they fit above the front
derailleur?

I have narrow twisty halls in our apartment, and we're up two flights of
stairs, so I can understand the why some people are drawn to single speeds
& messenger bags / backpacks when it comes to navigating the city.

I found it easiest to roll my Hunqapillar along on its back wheel to
navigate corners, so no fenders, and I use bags I can carry with shoulder
straps, usually a re-purposed messenger bag as a front basket bag, plus a
saddlebag.

And I use a Lezyne Micro Floor drive that fits in my bag, so I can use the
top tube for carrying my Hunq if need be.

And I usually say a prayer to Lord Ganesha to keep the elevator (and my
knees) working.

Couldn't agree more. Light, smooth and really fast. I struggled with the
Stampede Pass vs. Barlow Pass decision thinking thinner would be faster.
The group and Jan Heine's articles leaned me toward the Barlow Pass and I
couldn't be more thankful for the advice. I've been riding around some
construction in LA the past few days where everyone appears to ride plastic
(OK, carbon) bikes with skinny tires. I've been breezing past as these
people tenderfoot their way around the construction. Even the BP
extralight's cruise right through it all without a worry. Amazing ride
quality and good looking to boot!

[RBW] Re: how do you carry your loaded bike?

2015-06-04 Thread Surlyprof
I had no problem mounting the Walnut Studio's leather bike handle over the
derailleur and below the bottle cage. Perfect fit. The only problem was
that there wasn't enough space between bottle cages for a hand. That's why
one bottle would have to go to make it work. Wasn't willing to give up a
second bottle so the handle was returned. If the Hillborne came with a
third, lower cage, I probably would have shed the seat tube cage and kept
the handle. They are really nice and would have been handy getting in and
out of SF BART stations. I even considered the two-fish bottle cage just
to keep the handle. Started to feel a little Frankenstein to me so I
didn't go there.

[RBW] Re: A Life Update

2015-06-04 Thread Cecily Walker
I'll eventually need to get the other done as well. I can't even imagine
doing both at once, though. *shudder*

I hear that as long as I keep up with rehab and have patience, in about 6-8
months I'll wonder why I hadn't done it sooner. If you can get it done
before you lose independence (like I have), I'd say go ahead and get it
done now. Canada's socialized health system pretty much dictated that I had
to wait until I could barely walk/stand before I got the surgery. Hopefully
you won't get to that place.

If Orthovisc/Synvisc injections are helping, I'd say do those for as long
as you can, if money permits. They helped me for a long time, until nothing

Oh, Michael, I am TERRIFIED. The dreams I've been having as I get closer

me what I'm going to do after the surgery, and to be honest, everything
after July 7 is a total blank. I can't even think that far ahead.

One day at a time, or so I've heard. :)

hi Hugh,
the lugged seatpost is S84 - the Japan price at current exchange is about

the crystal fellow is S83, and they have that for about $60

[RBW] AHH Brake Ideas

2015-06-04 Thread Kelly
Ok so I'm at a point that I don't want to go back to 700x33.3 32 etc but
love my 700x37's and my favorite for now the Barrlow Pass 38's.However
fender clearance is limited due to side pull brakes... currently running
silvers.
If the brakes just had more center of tire clearance. So been thinking
center pulls.. maybe... or just adding adapting the bike to canti's and
repainting.

So my bertholds would work but bump it once and it rub and then they
cracked so in a pinch I threw on some sks fenders I had in the garage.

Ideas? Side pull brakes with a higher arch? 68 atlantis? lolThe AHH
is like my perfect bike.. and I'm nitpicking but seems there should be a
solution:)

thanks

Kelly

[RBW] Re: AHH Brake Ideas

2015-06-04 Thread ted
The right center pull should do it. My AHH is 650 instead of 700 but I ran
SKS 45 longboards over Soma GR tires (~41mm). At first under Silver dual
pivot brakes, and later with a Mafac Raid front brake. With the silvers the
clearance for the front fender was less than I like. With the Raid (and
some extending of the slot on the fender tang) its fine.
