[RBW] Soma Oxford vs. Nitto Albatross

2014-02-24 Thread Cecily Walker
When my bike shop substituted the Soma Oxford handlebars for the Nitto
Albatrosses I'd originally requested, I was told that the handlebars were
"just like" Nitto, except for the finish. However, I'm learning that the
Albatross bars are a bit wider, and they're also a bit longer than the
Somas.

I'm wondering if anyone has a photograph or some other graphic that
compares the size of the two handlebars so that I would be able to see the
difference? I'm still trying to tune in the right fit on the Betty Foy, and
even though I've gone in for a fitting, I can't help wondering if the
longer, wider Albatross handlebars would make an appreciable difference in
how the bike feels, especially on those days when the arthritis is flaring
up and my wrists hurt a lot.

Thanks in advance!

Wheelset now $415, so another $25 off. Will also include a bar of extra

[RBW] Re: Soma Oxford vs. Nitto Albatross

2014-02-24 Thread Scot Brooks
Hi Cecily,
Here's what
flickrhad to
offer for the comparison. They really are remarkably similar, even
near-as-makes-no-difference. We carry both in the shop where I work and I
really can't tell if there's a difference when I hold the two up to each
other. I've got the Somas on my bike and they're great, but nothing like
the Nitto in terms of finish. Not even close.

Starting to look like my Hillborne might try a new set of tires this year.

Re: [RBW] Re: Change my chain or ride it til it skips?

2014-02-24 Thread Eric Platt
My rule is after each winter replace chain. No matter how many/few miles.
This year will probably only get about 150 to 200 miles on the bike with
this chain. But it will go away by late march.

Personally not to the point where the cassette gets replaced after winter
with that few miles. Although probably should.

Winter in MN means lots of sand/salt/chemicals on the roads. It does a
number on chains and chainrings. That's also a reason some folks like
steel rings. Slower wear.

[RBW] Re: Change my chain or ride it til it skips?

2014-02-24 Thread Michael Hechmer
I go a step further. I don't necessarily even replace cassettes when they
start to skip! Skipping almost always begins with the smallest cog, so I
replace it. Now when I buy a new cassette, I buy the best I can find and
an additional small cog at the same time. My experience has been that the
higher end cassettes and chains shift better and last longer than the
budget versions.

[RBW] Re: Soma Oxford vs. Nitto Albatross

2014-02-24 Thread doc
I've got both a pair of Albatross as well as a pair of Oxfords. I found
the shapes to be identical, with the Oxfords having a better finish. While
I haven't measured them, it seems the Oxfords are also a slightly smaller
diameter between the ends and the center. I found them discounted on line
for $38.

[RBW] FS: Quickbeam,Simpleone 58cm Kinda Quickbeam, Waterford/Gunnar and Phil Wood wheelset.

2014-02-24 Thread hobie
Thought I'd post this frameset here as it is somewhat related to a
Rivendell. After all Waterford does build for Rivendell. I wanted a
Quickbeam and could never find one in my size. Riv had stopped having them
made by Panasonic. I decided to have Waterford/Gunnar build me a
Singlespeed frameset. I was fortunate that Richard Schwinn took my order of
this custom frameset. It is a modified Crosshairs 58cm w. horizontal
dropouts spaced 130mm. The color is battleship gray. I wanted to get as
close to the Hunquapillar in color as possible. It is not a lugged frame
although the custom Waterford 22-Series fork is. The fork is a 1" threaded
w. at the time brand new Dura ace headset. The frame also has the maximum
head tube extension allowed w.27mm worth of spacers. Get those handlebars
up high! It has 2 water bottle bosses, 2 front eyelets at dropouts w.
lawyer lips. rear eyelets at dropout, rack attachments on seat stays. The
fork also has the attachments for a Riv Marks Rack placed at the correct
distance. This was recommended by Richard Schwinn. The frame can handle up
to 40mm tires with fenders. I have done a few 100 milers on this bike. It
is quick, and comfortable! The tubing is not the standard Crosshairs,
but "OS" again recommended by Richard Schwinn. He said it smooths out the
ride. Boy was he correct. The top tube is 28.6 (1 1/8"), the down tube is
31.8 (1 1/4"), and the seat tube is 28.6 (1 1/8"). Takes a 27.2 seatpost.
The top tube slopes upward slightly. The frameset is just over a year old
although I have not ridden it in about 4-5 months. I have frame saved it 4
times. Comes w. a pair of Tektro 559 extra long reach sidepull brakes,New
SKS Commuter II fenders, black never used. I had intentions of turning this
into a 2-speed w. the wonderful Schlumph crankset from Cycle monkey. There
are a few options that could be done with this frame. The Schlumph is one.
2 would be an internal geared hub, although it is 130 spacing it could be
cold set to 132.5. The other option is a 650B conversion. Can't see why it
wouldn't work with Grand Bois Hetres 650b. Maybe the finest tires I've ever
ridden. The paint is in excellent condition with some chainsuck marks. I
covered that w. clear nail polish to prevent any rust. This is a wonderful
frameset that rides superbly. My riding for the most part has shifted to
MTN. biking. So this frameset needs a lovin home. The frame cost $1,250,
the Waterford lugged fork cost $375. I'm asking $800. plus actual shipping
for the frameset w. headset, new SKS fenders, Tektro 559 brakes. Below you
can find the excellent rolling Phil Wood wheelset w. White Industries
freewheel that I used for this frame. Email me off list for photos and
offers or text me 917 968 5664

Phil Wood Wheelset, handbuilt by Phil Wood. Yes that is correct Phil Wood
laced these. The front hub is a Silver high flange Phil laced to a
Silver Mavic Open Pro 32 hole, Phil Wood straight gauge spokes. All silver
in color. The rear is a 130 spaced Phil freewheel hub laced to same spoke
hole configuration all silver also. Comes with Rox rim tape. Both hubs are
bolt on, not skewers. Also included is a White Industries Eno freewheel
18T. Excellent rolling, strong made wheel set. Tracks very straight and
true!! Asking $340. plus actual shipping. Email me off list for photos and
offers. Or text me 917 968 5664.

[RBW] Re: Change my chain or ride it til it skips?

2014-02-24 Thread Ryan
As others have saidchains are the least expensive component of the
drive train to replace...so replace early and often. Park sell those neat
chain measurement tools. Downside of running worn chains (and then finally
replacing them) is that skipping becomes evident when you do finally get
around to replacing your chain

Re: [RBW] New Compass tires?

2014-02-24 Thread Jim Bronson
I only got about 1000 miles before the amount of flats I was getting became
intolerable. Nevertheless I love these Pari-Motos and I recently bought
more of them. Perhaps I would also love the Loup Loup Pass but get longer
tread life. The thinner sidewalls are a concern though. I have had some
sidewall problems on various Panaracer manufactured tires. I am quite
heavy though, I'm sure that doesn't help tire longevity.

At any rate, the next time I wear out a Pari Moto, I'll take my calipers to
them and see how much tread thickness is left. Should be interesting.

Stan's will help you. I just had the bike shop do the ghetto tubeless thing
on the supremely fragile (360 actual grams, 700C X 55mm actual on my 44mm
rims) Furious Freds (ghetto required because of the wide rims) and a test
ride through a thicket, literally, of goatheads caused no permanent leaks
while control wheel with Stan's filled tube flatted. My Parigi Roubaix are
useable only with Stan's (in tubes) - no flats in 500 miles.

It's worth noting the Nitto comes in a steel version, which the Soma

[RBW] Re: Saw the coolest thing on trail today.

2014-02-24 Thread Jeremy Till
I was right behind Brian and Manny when this all went down, and I can
indeed verify it was the most spectacular yard sale and recovery that I
have ever been lucky enough to witness. If I could go back in time, I
would buy a Go Pro camera and go back to strap it to my helmet just before
that happened, just to have video of it.

As always, a great day out riding with everyone. I was on my new, very
un-riv-ish, mountain
bike:
an aluminum(!) 29er hardtail with suspension fork(!) and hydraulic
brakes(!). However, being a relative novice to technical off-road riding,
I was thankful for every last ounce of tire volume, fork travel, and
hydraulic fluid I had, and totally humbled by the skills of my companions
on their steel all-rounders. Mastering singletrack switchbacks is now a
riding goal for me.

Cecily, I have some lyme-related problems with my joints and also a few
ragged vertebra in my neck. Don't rule out Boscos as they are dreamy for
comfy hands/wrists/neck and offer lots of hand positions. I switched three
bikes (saluki, protobleriot set up as a single speed, and a Bike Friday)
with old style mustaches to Boscos and haven't looked back. I still have
albas on one bike, and I like the Boscos more. You'll need a long

good luck!

Sheldon shows a method for getting the correct chain length. I was only
taking out a few links so one time I just installed the full chain.
Couldn't detect any difference in shifting quality or performance. This is
on a wide range drive train, 13-34 cassette, 24-34-46 crankset. Being
lazy, that's what I've done now for several years. Oh, and just lightly
wipe off any extra goo on the new chain but don't bother trying to lube
it. Whatever that factory stuff is works wonderfully and lasts a long

The price per tire for the non-el versions is not too terrible when

[RBW] Re: Soma Oxford vs. Nitto Albatross

2014-02-24 Thread Cecily Walker
Hey Liesl,

Keven at Riv actually suggested the Boscos back when I thought I was going
to buy the build kit from Riv, but for whatever reason (stupidity on my
part, maybe?) they didn't make it onto my list of considerations when I had
the bike built locally. They sort of remind me of the handlebars I had on
my Dutch bike. Now that I think of it, that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
I've just gotten so used to riding in a somewhat forward position (instead
of bolt upright) that I worry the Boscos might make me too upright, if that
makes any sense.

Thanks for the reminder and the link to the other thread. I've got some
thinkin' to do.

Re: [RBW] New Compass tires?

You could run the "standard" Loup Loup Pass, which has a similar casing to
the Pari-Motos. You still get the extra tread thickness and longer life, in
exchange for a few grams extra weight when new. Once you have ridden them
for a thousand miles or so, they'll be almost indistinguishable from the
Pari-Motos...

So far I have been using 25mm GP4000s tires on that bike on a set of wheels
that I had, which has worked fairly well for the riding I have been doing
on it. These tires are going to make the bike that much more comfortable

[RBW] Sunday Single-Speeding

2014-02-24 Thread Tony DeFilippo
http://dr2dc.blogspot.com/2014/02/sunday-rolling.html

Lack of a Riv (for the moment) didn't keep me off the bike this weekend.
Erl and I meet up in Georgetown for a midday ride up the CCT towards
Bethesda. I was curious to see his Surly LHT commuter, particularly its
fine luggage... Large Saddle Sack and a front bag that sits smartly on
Nitto Platrack. I'm sadly remiss in getting photo's of Erl or his LHT, the
conversation was too good to stop for pictures! The large saddle sack was
even more impressive in person, that may be my luggage of choice come
GAP/CO time.

I'll add another Bethesda recommendation for a culinary treat - Taylors
Gourmet Deli, excellent philly style sandwiches. Eat half there and save
the rest for a spot with a view on the way home. My second half was
consumed near the C&O trailhead what looks like an old bridge abutment just
short of the Key Bridge. Lot's of people out enjoying the spring like
conditions on Sunday!

The XO-3 continues to perform splendidly as a singlespeed, I think I've
found my Quickbeam-balm :) Speaking of beausage... the XO-3 has it in
spades, in fact the finish has been downright abused over the years. I
love the color, and I love the scratched up decals but I'm wondering how to
keep it from rusting under all the extra use it's now getting. Especially
given its likely role as the wet/bad weather standby. Do I have to
painstakingly nail polish all the nicks or could I just get the whole thing
clear powdercoated over the existing paint?!? Or do I just let it continue
to age naturally and keep a wire brush handy for the rust?

Tony

One more to show some of the 'personality' that came with the frame;

Thanks for sharing, Tony.
Very cool how beausaged frames looks so good.

Suggestions for you question:
1.On the next group ride, we could all bring our own clear nail polish and
have at it at one time. Get it done fast that way! Everyone could pick a
steel tube and we'd be done in no time!
2. What would Boeshield look like sprayed over the bare metal? (If you do
spray Boeshield, remove wheels first and cover up brakes/pads and anything
else you don't want overspray on).
3. Repaint the whole frame, as you pondered. RBW might be able to tell you
where labels were to be found.

[RBW] 9 to 8 speed worth it for better friction shifting?

2014-02-24 Thread Michael
While I need to replace my chain now, I was wondering if swapping out my 9
speed chain and cassette to an 8 speed chain/cassette would be a good idea
for better friction-ing while I am at it.

I hear the cogs are wider apart which makes for truer shift and less
auto-shifting.

My 9 speed cassette and Silver shifter does well, but I do get some
auto-shifts, probably because I don't always land the chain squarely on the
next cog and I am wondering if going to an 8 speed would help a bit.

Anything I need to know about this, or just swap the parts and adjust the
derailer limit screws if needed in case the cassette width differs from the
existing 9 speed? I am guessing the Silver shifter would be fine for 8
speed. I plan to keep the same toothcount for the biggest cog.

Any info is appreciated.

Before you do that swap the Centeron pulley closest to the cassette with
the non floating one and see if that helps your accuracy.
