Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Takes Flight Ride with an Ostrich...

2014-02-09 Thread Ron Mc
Great photos btw, Michael. I got out for the 20-mi loop from my
neighborhood yesterday. We've had some bad weather here, but my problem
for two weeks has been cedar allergies. After the first 10 miles, I had
sweated the meds out, and was quick and feeling much better in the second
half. But when I got home, all exposed skin where I had sweated,
especially my forehead and eyes, was coated with red cedar pollen that felt
like sand.

[RBW] Re: Anyone using the RBW Yokozuna salmon pads?

2014-02-09 Thread Ron Mc

Hi Michael, I've had the exact opposite results - love these pads on my old
center-pull Weinmanns.

Are you getting good flat contact on your rims? The down-side to the
Yokozuna carriers is they don't have the spherical toe and camber
adjustment. But they work great on these brakes.

I also put salmon pads on my Campy short pulls and am happy (these carriers
of course do have spherical adjustment). But the Campy brakes came with
cork pads and you talk about brakes right now - they were incredible - but
they don't last long.
I'm not sure salmon pads are better than the Tektro black rubber in the
dry, but they're the best in the wet.

I really like them, I find them a lot more effective in wet weather than
either the original Tektro or Koolstop. They feel more solid also, that's
what I have always liked about the original Matthauser.

Re: [RBW] another new Nitto rear rack?

2014-02-09 Thread Antonioni Vicente
Why all the tombstone-hate?!

I personally love the thing. In conjunction with my one and only large
sackville, life is waaayyy easier mounting the bag itself. The ol' tomb
squares the bag up nicely for zip-tying.

I know the write up says the leather cut out on the bag and the "tombstone"
on the rack do little in terms of security/stability, but i beg to differ.

For example, when you're making a quick day of SF to SC, large sackville
stuffed and you find once you roll into Santa Cruz that you were so stoked
to get off of Bart and get the ride underway that you COMEPLETELY forgot to
secure both the straps to the saddle loops AND the zip ties from
below...nonetheless everything is safe, snug and sound right where you left
it!

Three cheers for the tombstone!

No commuting for a long time now. I don't like riding on salt, and as you
know, with the weekly snows its just been a mess. Just want the bike to
run good come spring, so I think I will try to stick to the Trails until
then.

Lots of people ride in the salt and I get conflicting reports. Some say
their bikes do fine, others say the bikes get trashed. I am not worried
about the frame, just drivetrain components and wheels. RBW said salt is
hard on their build parts. I have fenders, but there is so much salt you
see it billowing up behind cars, etc. Builds up on shoulders. Looks like
sand all over.

Anyway, I am happy with doing training rides on the BWI MUPS. That was my
main concern with the century coming up in May. I'll hopefully get back to
commuting come springtime!

Re: [RBW] Re: Rain Ride with My Quickbeam

2014-02-09 Thread Eric Norris
Mostly rain yesterday. Worst part was the wind--mostly in my face all the way
on a one-way ride.

Also re-learned the lesson that no rain gear will keep you dry. Even with full
fenders and a front mud flap that almost drags on the ground, my feet were
sloshing within a few miles. Wool socks, thankfully, kept them warm. Up top, my
Showers Pass Elite kept me dry-er, but the wool layer underneath again kept me
reasonably warm even after it got damp. Other than solid plastic sheeting,
nothing keeps all the rain out ... and solid plastic creates its own rainstorm
inside.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Takes Flight Ride with an Ostrich...

2014-02-09 Thread Tony DeFilippo
The salt is definitely a mess, and the wet melty snow/ice/salt mix is even
worse. From a frame perspective, I've been pretty good about wiping down
the frames and fenders help a ton... I really see no point in staying off
the trails from a frame/finish perspective unless the bike is more a
collectable than a vehicle/tool. All my bikes fall into the latter
category at least so far. On the drive train it'll be interesting to see
how my 9 speed setup fairs as it has been out in the messiest conditions.
Shifting, at least w/ friction hasn't suffered and other than normal
weekly cleaning I'm not lathering extra care. Maybe it'll prompt an early
chain replacement or some extra breakdown/servicing of the RD pulleys.

On drivetrains I've been giving serious thought to trying to go 8 speed
across the board, my bikes, wife's bikes... I've got 10 and 9 speed right
now and having the different chain/chainring/cassette standards bothers my
sensibilities (completely arbitrary sensibilities! :) ). We'll see.

Of the riders I meet up with for Friday Coffee in DC (large group) many
have winter bikes/drive trains but there is about an equal amount who are
riding their 'best bike' year round.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for tandems?

2014-02-09 Thread Michael Hechmer
In addition to what Steve has noted there is also an issue of strength.
The captain needs to keep the bike upright while the stoker mounts and
when at stops like traffic lights, where the pilot puts a foot down while
the stoker stays clipped in. This is easy as long as the bike remains
perfectly vertical, but when it doesn't the person in front needs to be
stronger enough to lift the bike and stoker back to vertical. This argues
for always putting the person with the most upper body strength in front
and the person with the lower body weight in back. You also always want
the more experienced rider in front . With a mixed team this usually turns
out to be the male, but their are a few couples on the tandem@hobbes list
with female captains. Or blind stokers, which really makes the choice easy!

Don't do it -- unless by some rare chance the relatively few 8 speed

There are many more choices in 9 speed, including many that don't have a

Fair enough, but I think the notion of sufficiency is relevant here. One

Yes, they are on my wife's Atlantis, and work well. She doesn't have a

[RBW] Re: Loving Tributes to Betty Foy

2014-02-09 Thread dougP
Maybe bike models are like celebrities in that they get more attention when
they are gone? For instance, a few years back we had a long thread about
whether or not the Rambouillet was the "best Rivendell", and it had been
out of production for some time. So your inquiry about Betty may trigger
others to share their thoughts about their experiences. It's been fun to
hear your enthusiasm for yours, and your timing on getting one was quite
lucky. Hope we hear from other happy Betty owners.

Are these yokozuna the same as the koostop salmon pads? Both are
rust/salmon color? I run koolstop salmons and really like them. They work
as advertise and are "easy" on the rims. Of course, standard disclaimer -
YMMV! Good Luck!

If they don't brake in soon, (ha ha) I may try Kool Stops.
I might run a little sandpaper over them first to refresh the pad surface.
I'll double check the alignment and everything, too.

Gears are close enough that they get me the relief I need without going too

I have a 10 speed on the Bleriot that has been harder to shift.
I would like to try 8 sometime.
I think 7 the gears would be too far apart, but then, everyone did fine on

Thanks! It is interesting that yokozuna chooses to copy the kool stop
salmon pad. Perhaps yokozuna purchases them from koolstop?

What I really like about yokozuna are their cables! One of the local LBSs
sells single strands of yokozuna der cables for $3. That's the best deal
around for a very well made cable. The LBS, who is an authorized Campy Pro
shop, thinks the yokozuna cable is the best in the business and better than
Campy! That's saying something! Good Luck!

2014-02-09 Thread Ron Mc
Hi Michael, No mountain cedar is a winter thing - they "pop" - literally
with sound - and spread their pollen with winter cold fronts. It doesn't
hit me until its really heavy. It's almost over, but the pollen hangs
around as dust and tires kick it up. I rode again today and the ride was
great, Stans adventure and all, but tonight I was congested until I got
home to decongestant spray. But had a great afternoon also, with 9-ball,
killer white pizza with prosciutto and kalamata olives, and a couple of
winter home brews.

[RBW] Re: Best Rainy footwear/boots

2014-02-09 Thread Bill
My Sunday paper comes in a long thin plastic bag that fits snugly over my
MTB shoes. I've saved enough to have a nice supply. A couple of rubber
bands holds the top and loose parts in check. I can easily snap in and
out of SPD pedals without fooling with cutting holes in the sole part.
Works well and I always carry a pair when I lose at outsmarting the
weather forecaster.

Re: [RBW] Re: SoCal February S240 poll.

2014-02-09 Thread Hugh Smitham
So here we are the 9th of February already and before we know it we'll be
buying candy and flowers for our loved one's...and then there's the notion
of an S240 at the end of the month. I'm bumping it one last time to see if
there's any interest.

The idea was to do a ramble overnight out Ojai way...I've had interest from
Evan S, and Mike S. for this one but before I commit to traveling to
Ventura once again I'd be nice to have a few more folks on board. I think
an S240 like this begs for a small group.

So let me know if your in for February 28th & March 1st travelling by train
to Ventura. Refer to original post for the details I proposed. As usual the
idea is flexible to a point as long as we have a consensus.

Hope to see some of you fire side.
