Re: [RBW] Re: Best/Worst

2014-01-16 Thread Tim Gavin
I love the German mirror! I've never had problems with it. Well, besides
it being constantly knocked around when I'm walking, parking, or carrying
the bike. But, it's easy to re-adjust when I'm riding, because the mirror
will stay in the position it was last put (or whacked).

I mount mine about 6-8 inches in from the left end of the moustache bars on
my Riv Road (hard to see in the lower pic, sorry), and in a similar place
on my Schwinn KOM-10, but horizontal under the grip:

That placement sometimes catches my knee in the field of view, but at least
my arm is out of the way. The sweep of the Wald cruiser bars precludes a
vertical position on the bars.

I also love the fender light! I'd like it to flash (I understand why it
doesn't, but still), and I love that I don't have to think too hard about
it. I may try to get the cute metal bash guard for it. I also may try out
the Pixeo Xba; it's the same light but with a light and motion sensor, so
it comes on automatically.

[RBW] Re: Best/Worst

2014-01-16 Thread Edwin W
German Mirror:
I have Albas and mount it just forward of the brake levers. At first I was
really annoyed that it kept moving, knocking into things, etc, but now I
actually like that it can move, so I can rotate it in when I put it in a
car (or when I am wearing my poncho over my handlebars during a rainy
commute). I also sometimes wish it were wider, or out to the side further,
but what can you do! I just fiddle with it, finding that with the right
tilt I get a slightly better angle behind me.

I just ordered another German Mirror with some Boscos for my fairly new to
me family ride - Yuba Mundo. The handlebars on there now are fine, but I
have really wanted to try some Boscos. I'll report back to see how the
mirror works on those bars.

Re: [RBW] Bike Camping. We are DOING IT WRONG

2014-01-16 Thread Tim Gavin
Yes! That's a cool shelter. Do you lay a piece of plastic down underneath
your sleeping bag/mat? I like that you can park your bike inside! I'm not
sold on a screen-less tent; Iowa has fierce mosquitos in summer.

I have this tent (Big Agnes Emerald Mtn SL3), which is crazy light for a
3-person backpacking tent ~5.5 lbs. There is an optional vestibule that is
advertised as big enough to be a bike garage. I may pick one up...

As for retro camping gear, I love it so long as it's lightweight. I used
heavy canvas/military surplus stuff as a kid in the Scouts, but I've
upgraded since. (Modern military gear is pretty good, though; I use my
combat boots and gore-tex suit often)

I managed to get a pair of home-built, barely used Frost Line down sleeping
bags for cheap recently. Frost Line was a company that offered mail-order
kits (patterns and materials) to make your own outdoor gear.
http://www.oregonphotos.com/Frostline1.html
Apparently, in the 1970s it was tough to find good mountaineering gear in
the states (probably why Rivendell Mountain Works made such an impression
on Grant). So, many folks made their own.
The pair of bags I found (plus an additional down insert bag, for those
polar nights) are probably built tougher than a modern North Face. They're
lightweight (down!) and super warm. Basically for 40 degrees or colder
only, 'cause they're ovens above that temp.

Kinda like great vintage lightweight bikes. Retro, light, and just as
excellent now as when they were made.

[RBW] single speed Sam

2014-01-16 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
I've got my Sam set up at the moment as kind of a cyborg single speed with a
40/26/bashguard up front and a 16 tooth cog in back with whatever spacers and
old cogs I had in my parts bucket. No front derailler at the moment.

All this is held together with a normal length chain running through a long
cage deraillier.

I'd like to replace the rear derailleur with a chain tensioner if I can find
one that will let me keep the granny gear up front for occasional use.

Does such a thing exist?

I agree about the bug screen. I didn't experience that on the trip shown -- too
wet, except for the giant banana slugs that I had to pluck off the inside of
the tent walls each morning. I'll take giant banana slugs over skeeters any
day. I hate skeeters. I did not bring a floor as it would get torn up with the
bike and trailer. I used a bivy on this trip (you can see it in these pix),
which does have a face net. I just never needed it.

[RBW] Re: ISO 60cm canti saluki

2014-01-16 Thread iamkeith
Peter,

If you (or Tony D., hint hint) are not set on the cantilever brakes
option, that 60cm Rambouillet on craigslist, in another recent thread, is a
great option. There have been a few discussions recently about how well
they convert to 650b (even wide ones, like the Hetres), by using the
long-reach tektro/silver calipers.

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/bik/4280300843.html

My motivation here is of course partly selfish, because this now makes
three of us who have recently started threads indicating an interest in
finding a 60cm Saluki. But that Rambouillet really is a nice "roadier"
bike, in about as good of condition as you'll ever find. And the 650b
option just makes it more versatile. If I didn't already own the exact
same bike, that's what I would buy!...

[RBW] 2014 Multi-Locale Jamboree-mania - 2 Threads

2014-01-16 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Just a quick heads up that there are currently two (2) (TWO!) burgeoning
RBW Jamborees gaining steam at this point:

RBW 20th Anniversary Gathering and Entmoot -- SF Bay edition

thread -
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/f2JuoFUSiP8

and

Minneapolis country bike rally

thread -
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/vwjlERta5X0

I have driven a hatchet through these two topics so they will remain at the
top of the RBW Group Page. If anyone comes up with a date/location for
additional gatherings, please let me know and I will keep those on the top
once they are semi-solid.

Great to see this. It's one of the truly wonderful things which has grown
out of this group.

2014-01-16 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Hey there Bill -

Right now, there are less than 10 people who have sent an email saying that
they would absolutely, positively be on board.

This does not concern me at all, as a number more have contacted me with
interest. Plus, the project has only been announced here on the list. I
was going to request that they make a general announcement on their Blug,
via the Newsletter and possibly through an Instagram post. But, I wanted
to wait until around now before making a second push.

Also, the focus of most discussions has been features and brainstorming for
the model. Some of the feedback from the people who are interested but
have not yet committed is that they are waiting until that conversation had
ended or at least waned a bit.

Hope that helps!

If you want to be able to shift 14 teeth, you probably need 2 pulley
wheels. There are cheaper quality chain tensioners than the Paul (Surly
SIngleator, for example) but they have one wheel and could not handle your
shift. Here's the cheapest 2-pulley tensioner that I know of:
http://www.cambriabike.com/Shimano-Shimano-Alfine-SingleSpeed-Tensioners-Black.asp

Is it better than a derailer? I don't know. It doesn't have the sideways
play of a derailer and it's lighter (but we all know that weight doesn't
matter).

"2 pulley wheels?"

If you want to run two (or three) chainrings with a single freewheel, then
you need two pulley wheels

"How is that better than a derailler?"

Excellent question. The spring is tons stronger. With a derailer you have
exactly the same chain slap properties as you do on any geared bike. With
the Paul the spring is burly so you have a lot less slack and slap.

"What tensioner do people use who don't want to spend $90 on the Paul?"

Try ebay. Used and new. Let me search for you :-)

Used:
Melvin for $35 on
ebay

New (free shipping):

It's exactly the same. Specialized was responsible for those ancient
blackwalls on English 3-speeds, too. FACT!

OK, just kidding, but here is a real story about Specialized. Working at a
Specialized dealer in the late 1980s we were amused to see some of the
Taiwan bike boxes with a typo. Some of the Rockhopper boxes were labeled:
ROCKPOOHER. Sadly the decals on the frames actually said Rockhopper.

Which of these would you go for especially if your attempting to keep the

The current thinking seems to echo that of tire design: Wider = better

I would say 22.5 to 27.5 is a significant difference and would go wider all

[RBW] Re: All turned around bout rims [SOS Help!]

2014-01-16 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
wider rim = wider tire… as in the same tire will be wider on the wider rim.
There is a noticeable difference between 22.5 and 27.5… 22.5 is probably
close to what's on your Homer. 27.5 will be more like a rim on a beach
cruiser.

Those all look like double wall rims w/ eyelet's… any of them are probably
fine for your purpose.

I would probably go with the Rhyno Lite (27.5) just for the extra width.

Hugh:

Are these for the Atlantis? What tires are you planning to use?

My personal approach is "wider is better & heavier is better". There's
only a hundred grams difference so that's a non-issue. Price is reasonable
for any of them. A couple of friends have used the Mavic with good success
but I'm sure the others are equally good.

[RBW] Re: All turned around bout rims [SOS Help!]

2014-01-16 Thread Mike Schiller
I would agree wider rims flatten out the tire and increase width. I'm not
that excited about Sun rims though. They seem to have more rim to rim
height variation than others ( tire fit). And Mavics seem to crack at the
eyelets a little more than average. I like the the Velocity noBS rim

http://www.velocityusa.com/product/rims/nobs-559
or Atlas for a few more $$. Both are MUSA and mid width at 25.4 mm. You
won't see much diff between 25.4 and 27.5 in tire width.

oh yea... I'd go with 36h rims as well.

good luck

Re: [RBW] Re: All turned around bout rims [SOS Help!]

2014-01-16 Thread Hugh Smitham
Michael, thanks for the offer, however I'm after something a bit different.
Be good to ride with again at the RSR.

David, that's the vein I was moving towards.

Smitty, good to hear the Rhyno lite's are used on Cargo's says volumes
about their strength.

Doug, Ah could be...I think wider seems to be the consensus. And as you say
the price is reasonable.

Funny, I assumed this would devolve/evolve into a high tech thread with
wind tunnel dynamics and such, see what I get for assuming. Thanks all for
unraveling my grey matter on this subject and keeping it simple.

I'm gravitating toward the Sun rims and...hold on incoming from the
Bigshill.

Mike, I like Velocity rims (Riv digs them) but do they come in black? And
the price is a bit more. I was hoping to keep the total cost down.

So since I'm leaning toward the Sun Rhyno Lite's has anyone personal
experience with these?

Hugh...most people say wheels are not where you scrimp. The noBS rims are
about $60 each so kinda mid range.

The Rynolites are used on a lots of MTB bikes too and are pretty burly.
They are also one of the cheapest rims on the market though, made in

Maybe you should talk to your wheel builder and see what they say.

can't really answer that one Hugh. I'd go with a little lighter rim even
for off-road s24o's. 100 gms of rotating weight per wheel ( 1/4 lb) is a
lot to deal with unless you are carrying super heavy loads or jumping off
cliffs.

This is what I would get Velocity Aeroheat is the 26" version of the
Dyad and it comes in black. Great rims, very durable for touring and in
black!

They are the go-to rim for touring.

they've beefed it up accordingly.

FWIW... I was contemplating the Velocity Cliffhanger (559) for my tandem...
it's like an over wide 26" Dyad.

This is what I would get Velocity Aeroheat is the 26" version of
the Dyad and it comes in black. Great rims, very durable for touring and in

Re: [RBW] Re: All turned around bout rims [SOS Help!]

2014-01-16 Thread Mike Schiller
The noBS is what I suggested before. But I really think it's too heavy for
most uses except for really heavy loads, tandems and larger riders. The
Aeroheat is exactly the same rim geometry as the Dyad. They both come from
the same extrusion die. For some reason when they roll at 26" and smaller
they call it an Aeroheat.

[RBW] Re: All turned around bout rims [SOS Help!]

2014-01-16 Thread grant
The early mountain bikes had 32mm rims for the 50mm or so tires they had.
The tire and rim with were proportional. Mtn bike tire rims got skinnier
when Keith Bontrager (this is not a knock, he has been a hero) cut down
Mavic road rims (MA-2, 20.5mm) to mtn bike 26 size, and big rim makers and
bike bike product managers wanted to be nearly as cool, so followed that
move and made skinnier rims, and we've never recovered.
The ISO (international standards org) recommends much rider rims than
almost anybody uses...for fat tires. They don't enforce rules or oversee or
anything. They're a bunch of engineers who recommend. The older wider rims
are more in line with their recs for fatter tires.

The only drawback to a wider tire is weight. It holds a lower pressure tire
better, it provides slightly more height and width, and especially in the
case of a sidepull or centerpull, it gives a fatter tire a better chance to
escape btw the pads when the arms are released. With canti or V, this isn't
a big deal, but if the fork blades are wide and the canti posts are set
wide and the rim is skinny, the pads will arc down at the contact point,
which...can't be great.

Wider is also much stronger laterally, but...blah blah blah...

I think in our catalogue we have tire recs for rim widths. I don't have one
here and I won't be within 122 miles of one for a few days, but
basically...if your tire is fat your rim should be...not skinny. I don't
think I'm surprising anybody with that statement, but I apologize for using
so many words to get to it.
