I use a 10 cm Nitto dirt drop. I have a bad back (3 surgeries) and bad

[RBW] New-to-me Hunqapillar (drop-bar mountain bike/commuter rig)

2013-06-17 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi All,
What a great Fathers' Day weekend-- I got to build up my new-to-me
Hunqapillar. Many parts are from RBW Listers-- thanks so much for the
parts, ideas, suggestions.

Here it is before its maiden voyage. A few adjustments for fit, but it was
pretty good out of the repair stand.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/stakx/9066100361/

Build:
48 cm, Waterford build
Phil Wood Rivy 26" wheels
Schwalbe Big Ben 2.15" (measure 50mm and 52mm mounted)-- cushy, but [dare I
say] pretty heavy. I'm used to Jack Brown Greens on my Commuter CrossCheck,
so the Big Bens are a very different tire. No problems running over things
and hopping curbs; I'm a kid again on a BMX.

48 cm Nitto Noodle
1x7 drive train (I couldn't get the crank+bottom bracket to work as a
triple-- I'll need to get longer bb)
VP Thin Gripsters-- I like these much better than the GripKings on my
CrossCheck

King Cage IRIS-- works great with stainless steel Klean Kanteen bottle.

Small Saddlesack (I put an Irish strap around it to keep it off the tire on
my commute this morning)
Acorn Handlebar bag

A few more from the neighborhood and trails:

Happy riding, shoji

[RBW] The last minute bike switcheroo

2013-06-17 Thread Addison Wilhite
I am leaving this morning on a bike tour from Crescent City, CA down
to...wherever we decide to stop.

Had the new Gunnar Sport all rigged and went for a test ride and realized
the rear wheel needed to be sturdier even though I was in a pretty light
touring mode as far as load. Just felt a bit too much flex. That was
yesterday and did the quick switch back to the tried and true Riv
Allrounder. Even got to mount the front rack which I had been putting off.

It's a bit sad because the Gunnar road very well with the load. Looks like
I need a bit tougher wheelset if I tour with it though.

Here is the before and after of it:

Reminds me of my ride last month... I got the rear rack mounted and the
Noodles taped just the night before leaving... and made adjustments the
first couple days as things settled in.

You'll find great sandwiches and picnic benches in Elk, the Deli is open at
Stewart's Point, and the best breakfast (eggs and lox on focaccia) and
coffee in Jenner, at the small cafe on the river side just past the post
office. The coffee shop in anchor Bay is also good, very very very mellow.

I'll be riding the Courage Classic again this year. It's a 178 mile, 3 day
ride though 3 mountain passes in beautiful Cascades. It was created as a
fundraising ride to support the Rotary Endowment for the Intervention and

If anyone wants to support a fellow Rivendell rider on his 38 pound Sam
Hillborne in the sea of carbon you can make a donation here -

Anything helps! All your donation dollars will go to the kids. All support
for the riders is done by volunteers.

[RBW] Re: The last minute bike switcheroo

2013-06-17 Thread Mike Schiller
I've done most of that tour from McKinleyville to the SF Airport . One of
the best in the US. Lot of nice microbreweries along the way too. I'd
love to do it again.
Maybe you add some low riders and front panniers? That would take some of
the load off the rear wheel.

Have a great time.

[RBW] Cracked XD Crank Arm ..... And the Earth Didn't Stop Rotating :)

2013-06-17 Thread Garth
I noticed this strange squiggly line coming from the drive side pedal
hole today, while may miles from home ! Oh well I thought, nothing to do
really, if it breaks it breaks if not not. It didn't. When I got home
I removed the pedal to check if i could see the crack in the threads, but
could not. So I sanded off the anodizing at the spot until I could see it
no more. I hopped back on the bike and pushed down with all my weight on
the pedal, and lo and behold, the crack line reappeared . Oyil well !
Funny thing is, it's not such a big deal ! I have another bike to ride and
I'll order another crank. Pretty simple . These are the 152mm XD's, which
no one here likely uses anyway. They are made of a slightly different mold
than the longer ones, but still XD's as labeled .

Of course, if it /had/ broken when you were riding, it would have turned

[RBW] Re: Quickest bar tape goo removal chemical?

2013-06-17 Thread George Schick
Finish Line citrus degreaser/solvent. Smells good, works great, and you
won't have to worry quite as much about the toxicity of the chemical.

Historical footnote: In the questionably good-old-days I used to use a
chemical called trichloroethelyne, sold by the company who manufactured it
under the name of Carbo-sol. It was also commonly known by those who
worked in the petrochemical industry as well as the business sectors who
were the major users of it (printing, etc.) as simply "trike." It worked
much, much faster than anything I've ever seen since and was the default
go-to product for removing the old glue from tubular tire rims. 'Course,
it contained fluorocarbons, which it the main reason it was discontinued in
the last decade, plus it was hazardous to use - the molecule chain was
small enough to be absorbed into the skin easily where it went directly to
the central nervous system. Great stuff!

Super strong and very lightweight wheelset. The anodizing is mostly worn
off of the brake tracks, but the rims have loads of life left. Wheels are
true and round with proper tension. The hubs are super smooth with no play.
These are excellent wheels. No skewers.

   - 36h Phil Wood 1st Gen hubs (120/100 spacing)
   - Standard English threading (1.37" x 24 tpi)
   - 700c Campagnolo Omega 19 hard anodized rims
   - Wheelsmith double butted stainless steel spokes
   - Chromed brass nipples
   - Velox rim tape

*$235 shipped*. If west of the Mississippi, please add $10 for extra
postage. These will be packed in a supremely safe, proper wheel box and
sent via FedEx.

[RBW] Cracked Ramboullet

2013-06-17 Thread chris
I was on a ride last Saturday in the Gold Country in CA and the chain stay
broke through on the drive side at the rear dropout. I bought the Ram new
in 2003. Fortunately no injury. I stopped at Riv on my way home and spoke
to Scott who told me to leave the bike and Kevin would get back to me today
regarding repair which would involve sending the bike to a local builder.
Scott mentioned that Riv now beefs up the rear dropout area on frames.

Has anyone had a similar experience with their Riv.? I've always loved the
Ram and it appears fixable. Not sure if there is any type of warranty.

[RBW] Re: Cracked Ramboullet

2013-06-17 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Drive side rear dropout area is probably the most common area of failure of
any bicycle frame that wasn't crashed or otherwise damaged. Lots of
torques and stresses right there.

Certainly isn't an epidemic with the Rambouillet or Rivendells in general.

I'm sure they will be fair with you on this issue. Sorry to hear that
you'll be off the bike for a bit.

[RBW] New to Albas after drops/staches...did this happen to you?

2013-06-17 Thread Michael
Sitting totally upright on Albas with my saddle in the ususal KOPS position
that I had with 'staches and drops, I feel like my saddle has moved
forward, but it hasn't (I checked).
Feels like I am out in front of the pedals now when pedaling - not
directly over them like I felt with the low drops position with KOPS. I
guess when you move your weight around to a different position a lot
changes.

Nothing bad, I'll just move the saddle back if I feel the need. But for now
keeping the saddle the same as long as nothing hurts.
Just a curious thing.

Did you feel this when you switched to totally upright after being used to
a low drops position?

I am enjoying the bolt upright position a lot. Nice views. No neck/hand
issues either so far. I hope it will make it more comfy to wear layers in
the winter.
With drops, clothes get scrunched between my belly and thighs. Upright
really opens up the torso. Its a nice feeling.

Re: [RBW] Brooks Cambium C-17 First Look

2013-06-17 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Actually my reading of the letter is that their first production run is
going to be a limited edition at 145 quid. These will all be numbered. I
would suspect that sales after the limited edition will be less expensive.

"Now, on Monday 17th June, a specially dedicated website for the new
Cambium Saddles goes live and an initial limited edition is available for
sale with each saddle's number etched into its nose rivet. We are offering
a total of 1,200 pieces:
-1,000 C17 Gents Saddles
-200 C17s Ladies Saddles"

http://www.brooksengland.com/catalogue-and-shop/saddles/touring+%26+trekking/Cambium+C17+Ltd+Edition/

In the surveys I've filled out as one of the first 200 (it went up) I've
kept saying I'd pay under $125 (or was it $135) which was the lowest
option. Not that they'll listen to me. :-)

Aloha,

Bob

There are a growing number of prosperous vegans in the UK, US, EU, and of
course India, who like nice things without dead animals in them. The
majority is not yet enlightened, but we are growing and we are very willing
to spend our money on products that don't need to kill an animal to make.

And yes, many currently available race saddles are synthetic. They are
also for the most part gawsh forsaken torture devices.

[RBW] Re: Cracked Ramboullet

2013-06-17 Thread Joe Bernard
>From rivbike.com:

Our No Warranty Frame Warranty

It may seem odd for a company that makes such reliable frames to not have a
standard instant freebie replacement - warranty, but hold on. Just because
something that's defective is likely to break, doesn't mean anything that
breaks is defective. Even superbly designed, artfully made steel bikes
ridden according to design intent can break. We know that, and go to great
lengths to prevent it.

We're skilled, experienced non-defective designers. We use top-notch,
proven, non-defective materials. Within the few but real constraints
pricing imposes, we're selective about who builds our frames. When it comes
to caring about weight and shooting for lightness, we're super
conservative. It's not far off the mark to say we don't care about weight,
and it's absolutely true that we never compromise a frame to make it
lighter. A good frame weighs what it ought to weigh.

After all that, sometimes a frame breaks, and that's no more proof of a
defect than a broken window is proof of defective glass. It is impossible
to tell the history of the frame. It may be impossible for even its owner
to know it. Sometimes even good things break, and anybody, or any company
who doesn't acknowledge that is not being honest.

All that said, broken frames are rare. Crash damage, and running into
garages with bikes on the roof rack are way, way more common. Tell us your
frame's story. We may fix it for nothing, but you pay the freight. Or we
may charge a fee for the fix. It is at our discretion, but we're not your
enemy, and you are our friend. We keep that in mind, always.

The great thing about steel frames is they can be fixed. In many cases, the
fixed frame can be reinforced so that it's stronger than the original. You
want a fresh start, but a fresh start with a beefed up frame can be even
better. A thicker tube. An extra tube. Whatever it takes, we can do it. In
almost all cases, a fixed frame needs new paint. We'll work with our local
painter and get it to you at no profit. A repair may cost nothing or nine
hundred dollars. It all depends.

In any case, we feel beholden to original owners only. No other warranty
(or non-warranty) is implied, so don't go inferring any. But no matter how
you came upon your frame, we are happy to advise you on how to get your
frame repaired at a reasonable cost. We want your bike back in action, too.
Fair enough?

Yes, you've gone out of your way to impress upon me your vegan ways, and
the error of mine. I'm not interested in the politics of leather Brooks

Re: [RBW] Brooks Cambium C-17 First Look

2013-06-17 Thread Peter Morgano
I worked in a Vegan restaurant for a long time (a lot of fixed gear bikes)
and the owner made it a point not to make the non-vegans feel like they
were baby killing satan worshippers. I would imagine the smart people at
Brooks would do the same and not market this as a "this saddle will make
you sleep better at night" kind of thing. I see nowhere on the site where
Brooks is advertising this as a Vegan saddle. Is some part of the Cambium
made in china? Did some child worker slave to make it? Maybe that should be
more important.

Sorry to hear about the breakage. That had to have ruined an otherwise
good ride. Based on the "no warranty frame warranty" my guess is you will
be treated fairly and the repaired frame will be at least as good as new.
Whatever they charge, you will have the piece of mind that the repair was
properly done.

[RBW] Re: Cracked Ramboullet

2013-06-17 Thread BSWP
I saw your bike when you brought it in, that crack looked like what you
might see on one of those belt-driven bikes, with the slot for the belt to
slip through. ;-)

But from my quick look, the grain on the crack looked very fine, no large
crystals or strange plastic yield. I bet it's very easy to repair, and
probably with a stouter dropout than came originally.

I assume the hostel can accommodate an equal number of women. The unknown
is bicycle security. Bicycles are not allowed inside the building. They
claim to have an area outside that is safe. Maybe one of our SLO riders
could have a look & give a comment? Address is 1617 Santa Rosa, a short
walk from the train station.

The hostel is an interesting option, especially for those only spending the
weekend, and especially if your train arrives after dark or you want to
catch an early AM return train. It's definitely worth consideration.

I believe there are similar groups for each model... at least for the
current models. I post to the AHH and Betty Foy groups occasionally.

Re: [RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-06-17 Thread cyclotourist
I like the hostel option, but don't know anything about this one. If it's
in town (yet not next to the rail line) that seems like a plus (Firestone,
Firestone, Firestone...). If there's any interest in that, maybe we can
find out if they can offer a group discount even. Although $25 a night aint
too bad.

Cheers,
David
